Calem stared at the effulgent flickering of the flames as they danced in their small pit, almost mesmerized. The serene quietness of the forest was calming, and it would have been easy to lose himself to it if he was not trapped in the Arena. Or if he at least could forget that he was a tribute in the Hunger Games, but the squirrel suspended just inches above the fire was enough to remind him where he really was. Calem had never hunted in the woods back home, let alone roast a squirrel in them. Squirrel meat was not at all foreign to him, though, as that had been a part of dinner many a night when Robin had gotten injured and Trevor was just a newborn. Before Calem had started working with his father in the forestry crew.
To his ear that had become attuned to forests over the many years of being within one, the atmosphere seemed to change. This slight transformation was enough to bring Calem to his senses and snap his gaze away from the fire. A soft rustling could be heard across the clearing, hidden deeper within the trees. He tensed and slowly rose to his feet, clutching the tree behind him with his left, non-weapon hand for balance and his axe tightly in his right. The rustling grew closer and louder, followed by a snapped twig or two, and Calem almost leaped forward extemporaneously to defend himself from the oncoming threat.
And then it entered the clearing. Or rather, it darted ebulliently across the clearing and disappeared into the bushes nearest Calem. Calem relaxed, becoming overcome with feelings of chagrin. A little white rabbit had frightened him! Leaning back against the tree, he let out a huff of annoyance and a small laugh after. He probably looked so stupid to the people in the Capitol and Districts! Scared by a rabbit, he scolded with a small shake of his head. About to slide back down the trunk to sit again, Calem heard another stick crackling and froze.
This pop came from the same direction that the rabbit had come from, but this time, there was no small creature behind it. Instead, a very tall and broad young man stepped out to reveal himself. Calem probably looked like an idiot to this tribute too, if he had seen his earlier behavior behind the concealment of the trees. But instead of charging forward to attack Calem, the other young man approached with a question. Even an obvious question as it was, it was still not a threatening approach--despite the blood stains on his sword and hands, which made Calem wary--nor a direct attack. Calem decided to humor the young man, and leaned away from the tree, although his axe was still held at the ready. "Yeah, Seven," he said with a cautious tone. "You're Two?" It was fairly obvious that the tribute standing before him was a Career, and on top of that, he had gotten second highest ranked among all the tributes. People don't usually forget the top three. However, the rest of the Careers had mysteriously died earlier in the Games. Probably turned on each other, Calem guessed. But how or why the pack died did not matter now, only why this remaining one was talking to him instead of attacking.
The young man's next words wanted to make Calem swing at his head right then. "How stupid could you be?" he wanted to burst out, but that would only exacerbate the situation. His attempts at laughing and smiling only frustrated Calem more. "They were pretty rough," he agreed, trying to sound equivocating. His tone fell flat and sounded un-amused about halfway through his next words, though, so he just gave up, "Released a storm of trackerjackers. Killed my partner." Calem smirked, amused at how this other tribute was failing at making the District Seven male want to ally, if that was even what he was trying to do. Maybe he was just wanting to lower Calem's guard before he attacked, but even that the other boy had failed at.
Almost instantaneously, two packages came floating down through the leaves. One landed beside Calem, and the other near the Two male. Still suspicious, Calem glanced between the other tribute and his own package before finally kneeling down to open it. He kept the young man within his vision the whole time, of course. Calem wasn't really sure what could be in his gift since he couldn't think of anything else he could possibly need. He had an axe, and that was good enough for him; but he sure wasn't disappointed by the protective armor found inside the box. The green and gold colors reminded him of his costume for the tribute parade, causing him to wonder if his stylist had helped design or choose this armor. The thought sure did please him.
Hoping that the other tribute would be preoccupied with whatever was in his box, Calem began assembling the armor around his body, dropping his pack to the ground and placing the spile from his pocket into it. The armor fit perfectly, maybe even a little tightly, making the boy glad that he had removed the spile before putting it on. It would have been very uncomfortable to have that piece jabbing into his leg the rest of the day. Calem stood back up--even stretching out a little more in an effort to reach the same height as the other tribute--and grasped his axe firmly in his right hand. The armor gave him confidence. Confidence that he had a chance at winning the Games. Confidence that he could avenge Ariadne's death. Confidence to be reckless.
"Seems like the Capitol has made their choice," Calem remarked, glancing briefly at the cleaner, longer, bigger sword that the tribute took from his box.
And then he leaped, slashing his axe at the young man's weapon arm as if he was chopping wood. Finally, he'd have a chance to see what pushing the plastic button on the handle could really do. (Calem squeezes the handle of his axe to release the poison, just to be sure.)
Go, go, power ranger! HiBth|Yq6damage (+6 from weapon enhancement and the poison attachment)

Why do you even bother? Reko at least had correctly guessed the boy's district. That had been a miracle in itself. He really didn't bother to pay attention to the other tributes. But then he probably should have. It would have helped him to know just who he was approaching. And maybe to approach better as it seemed his joking demeanor did not receive the positive attention that he had expected. He supposed the lower district tributes wouldn't be in such a comfortable mood as he was. Even with the betrayal he still wasn't in a horrible mood. He wasn't happy, in fact he was quite desperate but he also had calmed his anger since releasing it on his ally. Here was this kid who he was ready to offer alliance to and it seemed right away he wasn't evenly partly interested or amused by Reko. If the career had been more aware of people he wouldn't have blamed Calem so bad for his immediate annoyance. The Games weren't a dream for the other tributes, it was a nightmare.
"Yes. I'm from Two." He said, shaking his head just a bit. He wasn't going to explain why the boy from two was alone. This guy didn't need to know that he'd been betrayed. This kid didn't need to know anything, especially as he didn't seem too keen on listening for what Reko even wanted. The young man gave a bit of a sigh and shook his head. "Tracker Jackers? That's what that was. Glad I wasn't over here then. That would have..." He trailed off, looking up as the packages fell into the clearing. He was surprised that so far he hadn't gotten anything before, but now that he was there was more pride. It helped him to feel just that much better about himself that someone bothered to send something now. Maybe his painful situation wasn't as pathetic to the Capitol as he was concerned that it had been. Of course the other young man was getting something too, but that didn't matter. Not entirely. He wasn't even sure that this kid would be an enemy or an ally. Those thoughts completely slipped his mind as he greedily grabbed up the sponsor box. He wanted to know what was inside for him.
A wide grin crossed his face as he found the sword. Not just any sword, but a larger and sharper sword. A nicer one, like he had truly hoped for. He looked over the blade quite proudly. For the moment there he forgot the other tribute. But the smirk fell as he saw the words engraved onto the blade. Judas, the very bold and straight forward Peacekeeper he was, had not just sent a note but had it in the blade. And it wasn't even helpful. The words themselves made Reko scoff and roll his eyes. 'Don't be an idiot". What did Judas think he was doing? He wasn't being an idiot. The young man growled a bit, glancing up but then looked back to Calem to see him finishing to putting on armor. He had some nice sponsors, Judas was alright and the weapon was good but he was sure the other kid didn't get a snarky note from some Peacekeeper.
"I guess they did. I've been dying for a real fight." He started, but before Reko could actually get to do anything the other young man had gotten up and swung for him. Reko stumbled back with a shocked and pained yell. He reached for his arm, the sting of the wound worse than he could have imagined. His blue gaze lifted toward Calem with a new found anger. "You little b*stard! I came to talk alliances idiot!" He yelled. He shifted the sword in his hand and then ran at Calem. He swung angrily for the other young man's weapon arm just the same, as hard as he could slice with his sword. He was determined to do some damage, even with that darn armor. If his fighting arm was going to hurt like that, so was this jerk's.

A feeling of cocky satisfaction swept over Calem as he felt his axe connect with the boy's arm and heard the cry of pain. A smirk crept onto his face. He had attacked a Career and actually hurt him. If he could do so much on his own, just imagine if Ariadne was still alive... But what if she was still alive? Would her life had been prolonged to just get killed by this career? Would she and Calem have had to square off as the final two? Would she have died at his own axe...or he at hers? Even after all that's happened, Calem still didn't know if he would have been able to swing at her. He had been pushing the thoughts to the back of his mind ever since the Games started. Would it have been easier to think about if they hadn't met as children? If they hadn't reunited after all those years that fateful day in the Square? Ari had, in a sense, saved Calem's life that day when she intervened between him and the Peacekeeper Murph. If Calem had acted on his anger and even touched Murph, he could have gotten arrested, beaten, whipped, executed--or all of them combined. Ariadne had saved his life, and Calem failed to save hers. This only fueled his determination to win, to beat the Career before him.
His determination, which had been as solid as rock, began to crumble once the young man swung back. Calem's armor absorbed some of the hit, but he could still feel a lot of the force behind Reko's sword. It caused him to wonder how long the new armor would stand before or if it broke. He grunted in pain, and then snarled back, "I don't ally with people I don't trust!" He readied his axe to swing again, but a huge crash interrupted him. Quickly glancing in the direction of the noise, Calem saw the flames. A large, flaming log had plunged to the ground, catching all the shrubbery around it on fire as well. From being in a forest his whole life, he knew just how fast fire spread from tree to tree. When Calem was younger, he had been in the woods during free time and saw a hooded man walk into the forest. A lot of people did that so there was no cause for suspicion, but what happened after couldn't help but make Calem wonder. It had been maybe five or ten minutes later and a woman came running towards Calem, yelling, "Fire! Evacuate the forest immediately!" She then ran right past him, not even checking to see if he had obeyed, and continued into the forest to warn the other workers. Calem did leave the forest, but he had stayed near the entrance of it, as close as the adults would let him be, to watch the people who escaped the fire. Neither the hooded man nor the woman had been brought out.
With every passing second, the fire grew closer. His helmet and the fight with Reko had muffled the noises from his ears, but now Calem could plainly hear and see it. His eyes shifted from the fire, to Reko, to the pack at his feet. He needed to get out of here and elude the fire. He definitely did not want to get roasted alive.
Scooping up the bag and carrying it by just a strap, Calem took off past Reko. He didn't think that he and Ariadne had gotten too deep in the woods before they encountered the blonde boy; while he had no idea how long the forest stretched on in the other direction, the one that went away from the volcano, and he really didn't feel like finding out.
Run, run, power ranger! LjBuFccr4damage

Why do you even bother? Reko raised his arm to swing back at Calem once more. He was ready for this fight, a real fight. He was desperate for a real fight and here was his chance. That desire had him all but blacked out until the loud cracking of the falling tree. It was the full on crash of the fallen tree that made him jump and almost drop his sword. A couple of curses flew from his mouth Wide eyed he looked past Calem to the log, then glanced to the other boy. For a moment he considered swinging at him anyways but the fire started to catch. Reko was a brave young man but fire just wasn't his thing. There may have been a bit of an irrational fear of it even. He gave a scared bit of yelp as the flaming tree settled, then looked wide eyed toward Calem. "Move!" The young career snapped and pushed past him to go the other way. There was no way he was going back in the direction of that gigantic mutt. Not that he knew where it actually was, but he was determined to just go the other way.
Reko ran as fast as he could through the forest and toward the beach, Calem being the last thing on his mind now. He needed to get out, he needed to get to whatever lay outside this forest. The heat, the crackling of burning forest, the pain in his arm. It was all too much for the career. He didn't dare drop his new sword, and he didn't look back. He was scared of being burned alive, not that it was anything he'd been close to before. He'd take an axe to the arm over a flame without a complaint. Getting to whatever lay beyond was the only thing he could think of, even if he didn't know what was out there.
To the beach! EBN7eT044damage

Why do you even bother? There was a frantic look to Reko as he ran through the woods. The large man was hardly looking the part of the strong and brave tribute he needed to be. How could he when he could be facing one of the few things that he actually feared. That and the bleeding wound from his arm was enough to turn his brave face into a twist of pain. He couldn't stop to look at the wound, or look around to beg Reimer to send him some medicine. Why the Peacekeeper even bothered to sponsor him in the first place was a mystery. They'd met once, he'd offered to take Reko as a Peacekeeper instead of him going into the Games and Reko had refused. What did he care how the boy did in the Games? Unless he expected the victor to go work as a rookie Peacekeeper in some scummy district. That was a laughable idea for sure. At least in the moments when he had felt proud and mighty. But proud and mighty hadn't been successful so far. Everything had gone wrong so why would anything else happen to go right either?
He didn't care where he was going although that worried him too. What if what lie on this side of the forest was worse than the volcano mutt? At least he knew the mutt near the volcano had eaten a meal already. Even if that meal had happened to be his ally. That just helped him as he figured if it was anything like a dog, he'd fed it. It wasn't a dog but simple minds made their assumptions. But how far could this forest go? Even with the fear and the adrenaline boost from it Reko was starting to tire from running already. He was fast, he was strong, but endurance wasn't what he was known for.
And to find the beach this time! PnNpB6uX4damage

Calem ran. He ran and ran, and ran and ran, to escape the growing flames. So much running had happened in just the past hours, he was growing tired. But if there was a time or place to be tired in the Hunger Games, this was definitely not it. Not when the fire could jump from tree to tree faster than his feet could move across the ground. Calem just hoped that he had a far enough head start and that the trees would open up soon. Never in his entire life had he been so eager to get out of the forest.
Then, Calem remembered how he had found the medical kit inside his pack. Even with his armor, the blow from Reko had done some damage to his arm and it hurt like heck. The medicines, being from the Capitol, could probably at least lessen the pain. As he ran, Calem swung the bag in front of him and tried to hold a strap with the same hand as his axe. Using his other free hand, he dug around in it until he found the medical kit and pulled it out triumphantly. He then let the pack slide down his arm, pulled off the section of armor where the wound was, and slapped whatever was in the kit onto it. It caused him to let out a yell of pain, but he kept on running. A little injury on his arm was much better than death.

Why do you even bother? Despite an attempt to run quickly it seemed fate wasn't on Reko's side. Not at first anyways. He felt he was almost to safety when he heard the cracking and right beside him fell a flaming tree. Outrunning fire was impossible it seemed and the young man jumped and fell to the side, reaching and grabbing his other arm where he was somewhat burnt. The boy cringed and for a moment he sat frozen and staring at the flames. But it was too hot and his fear pushed him into action. It was about time that he stood up when the parachute came, and it surprised him greatly too. The container's timing to manage to hit him in the head on the way down was amazing. Reko let out a yelp, but caught the container in time before he heard something else behind him shift. He'd have to run and look, standing here would get him killed.
The lone career ran, but he was only getting slower. His arms hurt, his head hurt from thinking too much, endurance wasn't his strong point. But he had enough energy to open the provided canister. Maybe there was something useful inside now. A way to feel better maybe? He looked, grabbing the bottle, as he saw the "drink up" part of the note he was quick to down the potion while only slowing down a little bit. He wanted to feel better. He was finding the edge of the forest, he could tell. It was just those last little bit. If it was the potion or his mind he didn't know or care, but he was feeling stronger now that he drank the potion. And more confident that someone, even Reimer of all people, was capable of getting him sponsors. He couldn't be that much of a failure.
