Calem wasn't really sure where to go now. The looming threat of the volcano's eruption was not a pleasing thought. The rocks felt too exposed, but almost everywhere a tribute could go would feel the same way. The forest had burnt down, so now anything that was taller than a foot or two could be seen for a long distance. Trekking through ash and debris wasn't all that appealing, but if he needed to do so to find the remaining tributes, he would. But maybe someone could make it easier and find him first... Unfortunately, the District 7 tribute couldn't see a soul around, let alone this boy called Matthias. Ah, oh well, it seemed as though everyone wanted to do things the hard way. The Gamemakers were bound to do something to bring the final three together anyway, but Calem would prefer to not be on the receiving end of that gentle push.
He was about to descend down the black rocks when he froze. Did he hear something? There was silence following. No, his mind must have fabricated the noise. He hadn't seen anyone since the girl... But out of completely nowhere, a sudden movement at his left side caught Calem's eye. For the few seconds he witnessed it, the boy noted the shiny silver of what could be some type of blade, missing its target in a feckless attempt at attacking him. Calem whipped around with axe raised and ready to swing...
At nothing. His arm lowered cautiously, utterly confused. What just happened? He was quite sure that he had seen the blade sail past his side. But there was no human present to prove that it had actually taken place. At least, not a visible one. Calem didn't know how or why or if it was even possible for such a thing to happen, but people don't usually just imagine danger while they're still somewhat sane. "Uhh..." Calem stammered, wondering if all the people in the Capitol were going to forsake their faith and hopes in him now that he was going to speak to nothing. "Are...are you Matthias?" Silence followed. People were probably thinking he was going mad, that he should be killed right then because they didn't want the possibility of another crazy victor.
He slowly reached out his left hand. Dangling from his fingers was the charm bracelet, easy for anyone to pluck away, which he had kept clutched tightly in his palm since he left the girl. "She wanted me to give you this."
Summary: Calem walks, sees Matthias' knife attack him, is very confused by the lack of people around, decides that he is going to take a chance and talk to the person he hopes is there, and holds out the bracelet for Matthias to grab if he chooses to. The knife hurtling toward Basil's killer missed. It not only missed, but it seemed to miss quite badly. Matthias stumbled and then immediately jumped back, pulling his knife back inside his cloak. Cloak? When had Matthias put the invisibility cloak on? Confused, the 13-year-old puzzled over that, combined with his rather feckless attempt at murder, as he watched the boy he had meant to attack.
The boy was facing Matthias now, looking around quite confused. Matthias recognized him as the male from 7, Calem. Matthias had taken care to notice who his fellow tributes were, though it hadn't really been a good thing all the time to know. This boy had gotten a high score, and taking in the boy's size and the ax in his hand up close, the younger tribute was momentarily relieved he hadn't fomented a fight with him. He would surely have lost, and Basil's death would be followed quickly by his own. Just how had he escaped this fight? Matthias looked down, and saw nothing. His cloak. It had been under his armor during the fire, so that it didn't get burned up, but after Basil's death, Matthias had put more than just his helmet in the backpack. He had slipped off the top half of his fire-resistant armor as well, and pulled out the invisibility cloak that had been tucked into it. He had put it around his shoulders, disappearing entirely. And that's when he had stalked off to find Basil's killer, the rage at seeing him apparently erasing the memory of the plan he had already taken beforehand.
Perhaps his move wasn't as stupid as he thought it was.
The attack had been enough to alert Calem to something going on, but it would have been easy still for Matthias to just walk away. Calem talked, stammering out first surprise, and then saying his name. How did he know Matthias' name, and why would he care? Matthias wasn't sure whether he should reveal himself or not, because maybe it was a trick. If it was, he wasn't the type that would be able to catch on to it. And then, death. But after a short pause, Calem reached out his hand and let something show that Matthias recognized instantly. Basil's bracelet. He had seen it the first time he'd caught up to her in the arena, and it was the perfect token for her. It had to have been her token, though he'd never asked about it. Then the next words were the final push to make Matthias trust him: She wanted me to give you this.
If this was a trap, Matthias was taking the bait now. "Thank you," came words from the invisible space where the young tribute stood. He reached out and took the bracelet from Calem's outstretched hand first, then slowly took off the cloak that concealed him. Matthias turned the bracelet over in his hand; it was warm, and now it gave him something to hold on to of hers. Calem could have just left it at her death scene, but instead he'd held on to it to give to Matthias, which was surprising. He slipped it onto his own wrist and then looked up at his fellow tribute. "Her name was Basil," he told Calem, even though the other hadn't asked. He wanted Calem to know, just in case he didn't. "She was my... friend. Why did you save this for me? You didn't know her, or me." The boy who once trusted kindness unquestioningly couldn't help but question it now, so close to what much be the end of the Hunger Games.
An announcement cut through then, calling the remaining tributes to a feast. Matthias' eyes went a little wide, and he took a step back from Calem. What timing. If it was still meant to be a trap, the feast might delay his death a little longer. "Guess that means they want to end it. Thanks, Calem." He wanted to end it too, however it was going to be ended. At least he had the cloak, which still felt sturdy in his hands. He just didn't want to face off against Calem up there now, because it was too confusing. He had killed Basil - having the bracelet made that more than obvious - but also given Matthias a piece of her to hold on to. Hopefully, he'd only have to face was whoever else was left up there. Slowly, with glances to Calem just in case, Matthias started walking for the cornucopia.

"Thank you."
The words came out of nowhere, but they sounded like they originated from somewhere very near. Calem was beginning to believe that his mind was the one fabricating all of these noises--until the bracelet was taken from his hand. A young boy slowly began to appear before him. The boy put the bracelet on around his wrist, and then, surprisingly, revealed the girl's name to Calem. Basil... I didn't want to know her name! He knows it will torture me, so that I won't ever forget what I have done.
Calem responded with silence to Matthias' first words about Basil's name, still a bit stunned, but he decided to actually reply to the question. Why did he save the bracelet? It was true that he didn't know Basil nor Matthias until this very moment. It would have been just as easy to leave the charms there after she had passed and continued on his way. No one would have known except him and Basil. But the look she gave him... Her eyes plead with him and burned an image of themselves into his mind forever. He couldn't live with himself if he broke yet another promise. "I lost my friend too, and I promised her that I would," he told Matthias simply, not entirely sure himself which "her" he was referring to.
An announcement cut Calem off, though he hadn't planned on saying anything more. According to the voice that boomed throughout the Arena there would be a feast at the Cornucopia. Calem, who had glanced up to the summit of the volcano, looked back to Matthias to see that he had taken a step away from him, as if anticipating an attack. The tribute felt a bit hurt but could understand the caution. They were two tributes out of the final three, the third being the Career from earlier. There was no doubt that all three of them wanted to be the survivor. "Guess so," Calem shrugged as he watched Matthias begin to walk away in the direction of the feast. He's so open. You could finish him right now and just have the Career to deal with, a voice in his mind observed. He tossed the axe between his hands as he thought. Matthias cast glances back at him as the younger tribute retreated to the Cornucopia. But, no, I can't. Not after I only just gave him the bracelet... I'd be breaking my promise.
Calem took off running towards the Cornucopia, almost as if he was going to follow Matthias, but he didn't stop once he caught up to him, though the other boy hadn't walked too far ahead yet. "Good luck," he shouted as he ran by without slowing down the pace. Hopefully, he could get there before anyone else and before the Career got armed.
Summary: Talks to Matthias and then run towards the Cornucopia. The words Calem said about his reasoning behind giving Matthias the bracelet made sense to the 13-year-old. If whoever Calem lost meant to him even a fraction of what Basil meant to Matthias, he could understand. So Matthias just nodded, holding back the questions he might have asked or the words he might have said. He already missed conversation in the brief time he'd been without it since Basil, and actual conversation with completely understood words and sounds was still so new and exciting. But it was dangerous for Matthias - not because it left more chances for Calem to kill him, but because talking to him more would get Matthias to like him more, undoubtedly. He had known that if the Games came down to just himself and Basil, he would die to let her live, but now he had to do everything he could to make it out alive himself. That included resisting the temptation of talking.
As Matthias walked toward the cornucopia, he noticed Calem didn't move right away. The ax moving in his hands looked all the more menacing, and Matthias gripped his knife tighter. He resisted the urge to walk faster, and tensed when his fellow tribute did the opposite and ran at him. Matthias turned, his knife ready, but the boy from 7 just kept running past him. He breathed a sigh of relief, wondering if the other had ran by so close just to set Matthias on edge. If that was his goal, it worked. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to go to this feast. He could just let the other two tributes go, battle it out, and he could hide in a tree until the remaining one died of whatever wounds he got. His pace slowed up the volcano as he considered this, how tempting it was.
Hiding until it was over might work, but that would be counting on too many things. First, that the wounds the surviving tribute sustained would kill him quickly. Secondly, that the Gamemakers would actually let Matthias hide, and that everyone would be content to watch one tribute stumble around trying to find the other hiding somewhere in this vast arena. Thirdly, that he could live with himself winning by being a coward, just as he'd been a coward so many times in his life. Matthias shook his head. No, running away and hiding wasn't an option. He'd have to go to that feast and end this thing.
Beeping caught the boy's attention, and he looked up to see a parachute coming down toward him. His last one, no doubt. Matthias smiled as it floated down to him, though that was more for the behalf of the sponsors that had been so generous than a reaction to what he really felt. What he really felt was terrified, but people counted on him and this close to the end, still wanted him to win. He untied it carefully, finding two vials inside. There wasn't a note, but he was trusting enough of his sponsor gifts by now. He swallowed first one, then the other. Like the potion he had received earlier in the Games, he felt warm and strength coursing through him. It felt wonderful, the perfect thing to push him to the top of the mountain.
While he was stopped, Matthias set the backpack on the ground and took out the top half of his fire armor again. It might not do any good against anything other than fire, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. As he set the helmet on his head, he realized it also made him feel a bit stronger too. The people he'd have to fight up there couldn't see his face, and see how scared he was. The Capitol and his sponsors couldn't either. Whatever happened, he wouldn't look the coward up there. Stalling some more, he pulled out the sponsor drawing he'd gotten what felt like ages ago. He smiled looking over the drawings of Seneca and Lucius. It was so painfully like Falro and his little brother's drawings, and a flood of longing to see his mentor again, to personally thank Seneca and Lucius somehow, rolled over him. He had to make it out.
Matthias repacked his backpack, letting the invisibility cloak rest over his arm. He'd only put that on at the last minute. Taking a deep breath, the male tribute from District 10 continued traveling the short distance to death or victory.
