After hours of waiting on Lilac, Scorpius’s eyes were blurry with sleep. As soon as she’d left, Haley soon followed. Before he could open his mouth to try to muster up an attempt at some sort of apology or explanation, she gave a half-hearted smile. ”You don’t have to say anything, Scorpius,” she said. ”This isn’t love, so maybe we’re f*cking idiots for settling. You sure as hell shouldn’t, not after that.” Haley stepped back, allowing him to come fully inside his house. ”If you come help me throw my shit together now, I can be gone before she gets back,” Haley said. He followed her into his bedroom, mirroring her as she tossed her scattered belongings into a random bag of hers she’d found tossed onto his floor. For the most part, the packing process was quiet. It was almost funny that after what was almost an entire year of time spent together, there were so few words to be said. Scorpius knew that Haley was right. They’d both been thinking the same thing long before Lilac knocked at his door. It’d just taken her appearance to shove both him and Haley into reality. After all of her things were gathered and the room seemed much more empty, Haley smiled a half smile. ”Well, Scorp, thanks for the year. Here’s to hoping for a much better one,” With that, she lifted her bag over her shoulder, planted one last kiss on his cheek, and walked out of his house, leaving no trace of her behind. For the first time in his life, Scorpius was totally alone in his house. His time had always been spent with someone breathing down his back or occupying his time, whether it was Andy, Apollo, Starling, Lilac - for that brief time -, or Haley. Now, with Andy and Apollo gone, Starling somewhere else, Haley gone, and Lilac elsewhere (only for a few moments, Scorpius hoped), the house was empty, leaving only him. The unwavering presence of others was often a complaining point of his throughout his years in the house, but now that it was gone, he found it to be a strange, empty-feeling absence. Unable to sleep because his mind was still racing and unable to go elsewhere because of Lilac’s return, Scorpius was stuck within the confines of his home. All this left him sitting on the edge of his bed, staring at the door, waiting for it to open and a new chapter in his life to begin. After a time, he succumbed to the tiredness that set in. ——— When Scorpius awoke, part of him expected to find Lilac tucked into his bed beside him. Instead, he was still stunningly and entirely alone. Scorpius rolled out of bed, grappling for positivity until he remembered a key point in his happiness. Lilac was back. Te night before, she didn’t promise to return within a set amount of time. If anything, she probably got caught up in business with the mayor’s office and the district. Scorpius imagined that returning to the district from the Capitol was no effortless task. For the first hour of his morning, Scorpius desperately tried to distract himself and think of something other than Lilac. Waiting on her was like torture. Each second that she didn’t come to his door felt like an hour. So, finally, after giving up on the premise of waiting for her, Scorpius decided to try to find her instead. He stepped out into the fresh morning air, humid and warm as ever, and started downtown towards Lilac’s old apartment building. Scorpius wasn’t sure where she was staying, but it was the closest guess he had. The whole situation still felt surreal. Lilac had came back. For him. She loved him. He wouldn’t have to be alone anymore. Things could, for once in his life, finally get better. His heart soared at the thoughts of the possibilities that would come with being with her. As Scorpius moved towards the center of the city and the Justice Building, he took pause. Outside the building, the mayor stood, smiling at the public below that had gathered as one horde of people, probably awaiting some announcement. Wanting to see Lilac but wondering instead if something was wrong, Scorpius strayed from his course, finding himself joining the mass of people as they awaited whatever news was about to be delivered by the mayor. Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
She couldn't think, but at the same time it was all she could do. The fear and anger that roiled up inside her had no escape. She kept them balled inside her chest because she knew any other response would only endanger her and Scorpius. What was he doing? Was he still awake? Was he waiting for her? He must be. And there she was, sitting in the mayors office alone with her soon to be husband. He was excited, speaking about all the things they would do "together". How they would be a "team". This couldn't be real, and yet she smiled and nodded. Light peeked through the blinds before he finally stopped.
"I can't believe it's morning already, we've talked all night. I feel..." he stopped, a small smile on his face. "I knew you would be a good match."
For a moment, just a moment, she felt sorry for him. His smile looked so genuine and his face hopeful, as if he really believed what he was saying. But then her heart tugged sharply with the image of Scorpius.
"I suppose we should go outside now, I suspect the gathering has begun," Liam said standing up and pulling on his blazer. Even after an entire night of being awake, his clothes looked fresh and neat.
Lila nodded, "I'll just freshen up." Before she could stand, he ran towards her and pulled her chair out, then opened the door for her. He was too eager, it must be all an act. She couldn't meet his eyes as she walked to the restroom.
A thin woman stared back at her in the mirror, she didn't recognize her face at first. Dark circles and fine lines around her eyes. An almost permanent crease in the middle of her brows. She felt a force behind her eyes and before she could even realize what was going on, she'd burst into tears. Her shoulders shook as her hands flew up to her face. There was nothing behind her to lean back on and her body felt weak. She collapsed forward against the sink.
Scorpius.
---
She looked ahead, her eyes resting on the tops of people's heads. She couldn't look for him, wouldn't look for him. Liam's voice reverberated beside her, his voice soft but firm on the speakers. He sounded confident and kind. Lila knew that Scorpius must be there. And if he wasn't, he would hear about it soon. The new mayor and his fiancee. Lila couldn't bear to see the look in his eyes, couldn't look at his face. So she kept her eyes above the crowd. A smile plastered to her face. She heard a baby's cry, her eyes flitting towards it only for a moment and there he was. Scorpius, in the middle of the crowd staring right up at her.

Scorpius blinked a few times in confusion as he watched Lilac step out from inside the Justice Building. Her face looked gaunt and exhausted. Scorpius saw right through the forced smile she painted on her face. For a moment, he tried in vain to gain some sort of understanding as to what was happening. Before he had to figure it out on his own, the mayor’s voice cut through the microphone.
For a resident of District 9, the man was incredibly well kept. Most people of the district had skin muscled and tanned from hours spent in the fields. Dirt from toiling sank into the creases on their hands and in their nails and continued to stay there after the worker had given up on trying to keep the reminders of their work off their body day after day. Most notably, though, they wore a hungry look in their eyes, the look of a people who worked with crops day in and day out for their entire lives but still yet never had enough to eat. The mayor was the opposite of this, with his sweet and smooth voice that came through the speakers stationed around the Square, with his clean and pressed clothes, and with his frame boasting muscle and strength (which, of course, was not found by holding farming equipment). Scorpius hated Mayor Maxwell, hated him for the way that he was so fortunate while the others in his District suffered, hated him for the way that he clutched a hand to his heart as he apologized on behalf of the District for Andy and Apollo’s death.
But, as life would have it, Scorpius came to hate him more in a mere second than he ever imagined was possible. After the introductory formalities, the mayor chased his words with a sentence that ripped Scorpius apart. ”Without further ado, I would like to introduce to you all, the good citizens of District 9, my fiancée, Lilac.”
The mayor continued on with his speech, detailing how he - along with his wife to be, of course - planned on improving the District and supporting their nation of Panem. Scorpius didn’t hear any of it. Louder than any of Maxwell’s words was the ringing in his ears. His knees felt week. Scorpius knew that soon, his body would meet the stone of the ground beneath him. His vision was growing black around the edges and his mouth felt dry. It felt like the reaping all over again. The only difference was that at the reaping, he’d been able to act. He’d tried to stop Andy from volunteering, tried to hold on as long as he possibly could. This time, the shock was causing him to shut down. The pain was a blinding repeat of what had happened two years ago. ”No,” Scorpius tried, his voice a weak echo of what it had been as he stood in this same spot, awaiting the horrors that he was to face. Lilac was all that Scorpius had. He’d lost his family, lost his sense of life, and now, Lilac was being pried away from him. ”No!” he repeated again, louder this time.
Around him, the concerned glances of the others in the crowd fixated on him. Beside him, an older woman caught his arm. ”Young man,” she said in a whisper, her eyes brimming with concern, ”don’t.”
Scorpius knew what acting out at an event like this could mean. For some, it meant a bullet to the brain. At this point, Scorpius was beyond caring. He didn’t care if he was shot, if he was killed. If he wasn’t, what was there left to live for, anyway?
Scorpius began to push his way towards the front of the crowd, his breath uneven and tears burning in his eyes as he shoved past the onlookers. ”Stop,” he rasped, trying to gain volume as he spoke. ”Stop! Let her go!”
Scorpius felt a strong hand on his shoulder. A peacekeeper. ”I’m going to ask you once to come with me,” the deep voice said from over his shoulder. For a single moment, Scorpius stopped, considering. Then, he caught notice of half the district staring in his direction, including the mayor on the stage. Without fully realizing it, Scorpius took the one chance he had.
He pushed away from the Peacekeeper as hard as he could and attempted to bury himself in the crowd as he yelled. ”This District has taken everything I f*cking have! Don’t think that this Mayor is any different! He’s going to keep taking and taking and taking until nobody has anything! He’s taking her right now, don’t you see?!” Scorpius felt a strong hand dragging him backwards. ”I love her, and she loves me, but he’s taking her!” Scorpius shouted in a roar, using what was left in him in an attempt to throw himself forward.
After a split second of silence, the sound of the crowd began to rise to a worried murmur. A single second later, the sound of overlapping voices was overshadowed by a louder one: the sound of a single bullet being fired through the air.

Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
She didn't know what to expect from Scorpius. She hoped with everything that he would stay quiet, that he would stand there and watch and keep everything in, just as she was doing. If anything, he could walk away. But the scene that unfolded before her was worse than anything she could have imagined. She knew he would be devastated, but to openly express himself was something she hadn't expected. Did he have a death wish!?
Lila's mind was like lightning, thinking of all the things she would say to counter everything he was saying. He was a patient of hers. He had created an imaginary relationship between them. He was damaged. He was lonely. He was delusional. He was in pain. He needed help. Her brows furrowed and she gave him, and the crowd, a sympathetic smile as she shook her head. Poor thing. They would pity him. She would create such a lie that would make everyone feel sorry for him. But it would save his life.
Her body shook, but as soon as she put her hand on Liam's shoulder, her hand steadied. Her teeth chattered inside her mouth and her breath shook when she inhaled.
"It's alright everyone," she spoke in the microphone, her voice clear and calm, though she felt like her entire world was crumbling beneath her feet. No one could know. No one could see her weakness. The Peacekeepers dragged him away, her eyes trying to avoid him as she roamed over the crowd. He would be okay. He would be okay. Liam would forgive this. It's nothing. It's nothing. He's just some poor pitiful boy who had lost his family. Liam would forgive this...
And then a shot rang through the air, cutting the air inside her throat. She felt her heart stop, her entire world coming into a complete halt. Her eyes all of the sudden on Scorpius. Lila's feet moved quickly down the steps, but something hard wrapped around her and pulled her back. She tried to scream, tried to fight against it, but she voice was gone and she was being pulled away. Scorpius was getting farther and farther away from her and then the doors closed in front of her eyes.
"Lila! Lila!" a voice called out to her as she was dropped to the ground. A strong grip on her shoulders shook her. "Lila!"
She tried to push him away, "Let go of me!" she screamed, but she couldn't hear her voice. She kicked and pushed, but her body didn't react. It was like a nightmare she couldn't get out of, a nightmare where she couldn't run or scream or move.
"She's hyperventilating! She's in shock!" Liam's voice sounded so far away and yet so loud in her ears. In seconds she was surrounded by people, pulling and poking and prodding her. Liam was pushed back by someone and a flashlight shone inside her eyes, blinding her. She closed her eyes. That, she could do. But fingers pulled them open once more.
"Is she going to be okay? What happened? Who was that? Who fired their weapon!?" Liam's voice was heavy, low, and distorted. "Are they rioting?" Liam's voice was far away now.

Scorpius tried to focus on Lilac’s voice in the microphone. Calm. Calculated. Cool. And entirely false. It was probably an attempt at damage control. Didn’t she realize that Scorpius only would accept two results for this moment? Either his actions would make a change and he would have his life back - or he wouldn’t, and he would die. There was no mourning at this time. That had already been done in the moment that he came to his decision. Lilac was already gone. Now, his only option was to respond if he wanted a shot at obtaining a life worth living.
In a single second, one of those outcomes began to merge with reality. There was no break between the sound and the pain. Scorpius’s ears rang with the sound of the blast just as his chest blossomed in pain. His eyes widened and his knees began to shake. He didn’t scream or shout or plead or cry. Instead, he brought a quivering hand to his chest. At the time, it felt like it had been ripped into two separate pieces. Scorpius was surprised to see himself intact despite what the pain told him, but there was no shock when he saw the scarlet coating his hand and his once gray shirt.
There was no time to think of where the bullet came from or to question if another would be fired. All Scorpius could do was sink to his knees and try to keep breathing. The air had already caught somewhere within his throat.
After a brief moment, the ringing in his ear morphed into the screams and shouts making their way through the crowd in the Square. Scorpius heard the commotion but noted none of it. The only thing he could focus on was the horrible pain in his body, residing in the right side of his body like it had always belonged there.
Scorpius groped for his chest, trying to find a way to hold himself together somehow. The crimson spread from his shirt to his hands and the ground. In the midst of it all, Scorpius realized how black the previously light brown earth beneath him looked when stained with his blood. Slowly, and then all at once, his vision began to match that color.
A warm darkness spread throughout Scorpius like a thick quilt on a cold winter’s night. His head was light, but at the same time, his body felt so heavy. Really, it felt like he was sinking in a warm, peaceful river.
Life had been hard. His mother, his father. Andy, Apollo. The Games. Taking care of Starling. Constantly fighting to find a way to survive, a way to make it through each of the long and cold winters without starving. Loosing Lilac the first time, then losing her again.
Life was hard. Death felt easy.
Scorpius fell the rest of the way to the ground. His eyes were open, but they didn’t see or notice the feet pounding their way through the Square, the other citizens fleeing the fate Scorpius was dealt. He rolled to his back, his eyes facing upwards.
Above him, the sky was a light blue, left unblemished with no clouds. Scorpius exhaled and inhaled again, grimacing at the feeling. People were now running towards him, shouting words at him that seemed worlds away. Now, he stared unblinking into that perfect promise of a beautiful day the sky offered, imaging for a moment that it was the warm water above him.
Scorpius was content in allowing himself to sink.
With that, his world faded from that beautiful blue to a deep nothingness, and its shade was a peaceful and all encompassing pitch black.

Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
Lila felt her entire sear with pain. The numbness pushed back, relenting to the agony that she so badly wanted. She wanted to hurt as much as Scorpius, worse than him. She wanted to burn herself and the entire city, the entire country with her. She wanted to burst into a bomb that would wipe everyone out and it didn't matter anymore who got hurt and killed. She wanted this pain and she wanted everyone to feel it too.
Her hands gripped Liam's with every ounce of anger she could generate into them, "go out there and save him. Save him or I swear I will rip your life to shreds and bring you to ruin. Save him. And I promise I'll be yours, always, in every possible way and you will never hear from him or of him again. Please."
Was it too late? She didn't know, but she had to try. Liam's eyes stared into her, realizing the vastness of it all. The love, the pain that encompassed Scorpius and Lila. Something that he would never know. It sent a dagger to his heart knowing that she would sacrifice everything for him, to save him. And also knowing that she would give it all up just so he could live. Liam was torn by anger and jealousy. Why had he not known? Why had no one told him. Why hadn't SHE told him? But the look in her eyes quietened him. He didn't care about her threats. She could make good on them, he was sure. But it was the pain in her eyes that brought him to his knees.
That's how he knew. That's how easy it was, to make someone fall in love with her. He hated her. But he wanted to love her. He wanted that love. That love they had. That passion that riled into a thunderstorm and shook them to their core.
---
Liam sat beside the bed. Lila had stayed away as she promised. She didn't ask to see him at the hospital, didn't ask if he was alive, if he made it through. She'd only asked Liam to try, and he did. He picked Scorpius up himself, his body lighter than he expected. He carried the District in his hands, he was the District he ruled over. Starving, miserable, dying. They were all the same. And he carried him. Loathed him for what he and Lila had. Hated himself for wanting something he could never have. Angered by the fact that he could be brought so low by something as silly as 'love'. He had never known love, had never been taught it. It was a foreign concept to him, but Lila had brought it upon him. Made him see the strength of it, made him want it.
He saw the boy stir. "I had them give you the strongest pain killer they had, but they said it would also make you numb. So don't try to get up or you'll just fall back down. You're at the hospital. You'll be okay now as long as you don't do anything crazy. Just rest up, get your strength back. Your brother is in the waiting room." Liam sat there, not moving. He would sit there with him for as long as he needed to make sure the boy lived. Lila had made the choice for him. Their happiness for his life. He would make good on his promise to try to keep him alive.

”He’s lost a lot of blood.”
“How many transfusions?”
“Three. For now. Be ready for more. Just… get him stable.”
———
“Only one shot?”
“Who fired?”
“It’s a miracle it wasn’t fatal. An inch over and, well…”
“Kid’s a fighter. He’ll make it.”
———
Death was easy.
Life was hard.
The bright, artificial white of the lights burned down on Scorpius, more blinding than the sun at two in June. Here, though, there was no accompanying sweltering heat; instead, there was chilly, dry air, cold enough to send chills running down Scorpius’s spine.
The light burned his eyes as the air nipped at his skin. He wanted so badly to sleep, to duck into the warm pillow beneath him and stay there. Instead, he heard a voice, closer and more direct than the others he’d heard - or at least, the ones he was fairly sure he’d heard - earlier on.
Of the string of words, Scorpius only picked out a handful. Painkillers. Hospital. Okay. Brother. Waiting room.
He forced his eyes fully open. Before him was the sterile emptiness of a bland hospital room. Scorpius couldn’t feel anything at all. It felt like he was floating in a warm lake, all his limbs completely free.
He rolled his head over, trying to find the face belonging to the voice. ”Who are you?” he tried to mumble as his eyes failed to focus, as his brain failed to recognize the person before him. He was so tired. He wanted to sleep again.
Scorpius’s eyes focused a little, revealing the mayor. ”What?” Scorpius asked, his words slurred. Sitting beside him was the man responsible for the conditions of the hell that he’d lived in. He frowned at the mayor. ”What are you doin here-“ he started to ask, his words unintelligible. Scorpius tried to push himself up on an elbow but instead sank back into the hard mattress beneath him after a pain blossomed from his chest.
“It hurts quietly,” he whispered, referring to the burning in his chest. The room around him faded in and out. ”I g- gonna sleep,” he stated with a great deal of seriousness, immediately rolling over on his side to tuck away and sleep, to go to a place away from the pain and the mean mayors.

Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
Lila was shown to Liam's house, down the road from the Justice building. It was larger than any of the houses in the District, one look at it made her want to vomit. She refused to go inside and instead walked down a path towards the woods. Scorpius occupied her mind, thinking about all the things they'd said to each other. But mostly, all the things they hadn't said. And now, they would never get a chance to say them. He would live or he would die. Either way, they could never speak to each other again. All she could hope for was to see him passing by randomly. And hope that the sight of him wouldn't be like a stab to her heart. She didn't elaborate to Liam the extent of their relationship, she didn't need to. Liam seemed to understand without hearing another word. It pained her to see his face, the look of disappointment, like a man being rejected by the love of his life. But then she remembered that he hardly knew her at all, he couldn't possibly love her. And she loved Scorpius, more than anything and anyone in the world. If him living another day cost her life's happiness, so be it.
She didn't realize where she'd been walking or for how long, but she found herself in the woods at the edge of his house. She wondered how many times had Andy looked out from that back porch into the woods or into the starry night. Lila had once imagined herself looking out from that rocking chair, just as Andy would have, with Scorpius beside her. There would be nothing but silence between them and the crickets chirping.
Lila walked up to the back porch, feeling at peace that no one could see her and she could see no one. Just the woods and the darkening sky. She sat on the rocking chair, allowing her mind to wander. It was already dark by the time she pulled her mind back into reality. She sighed before heading back to her new house. It wasn't home, just a house made of wood and brick and metal. That house had not been made with memories, not like this one. This one was surrounded by it, infused by it. By Andy and Apollo and Starling and Scorpius, and even the girl she saw the other night. And her. It was real.
"He's alive," Liam told her as soon she walked in. He'd been sitting in the front room, the fireplace with a warm amber glow.
"Thank you."
"You can see him, if you'd like," Liam's eyes stayed on hers, neither accusing nor hurt. Just looking at her with something that resembled worry.
"It's late. I'm going to bed," she made her way to the stairs.
"First door on the right," Liam said, "my bedroom will be the one across from it."
Lila stopped at the foot of the stairs for a moment. They wouldn't be sharing a room, they wouldn't be sharing a bed. She felt a swell in her heart and thought of Scorpius. But she knew that she and Scorpius could never happen. When she entered her room, she saw a bed, an armoire, and a desk. She sat down at the desk and stared at the pen and notebook that was already there. She flipped it open to the first page and looked at the blankness of it. Lila picked up the pen and began to write.
'I would rather live unhappily, than live in a world where you no longer exist. I love you, more than anything in the world. Always.'
Lila tore the page out of the notebook and burned it on the candle's flame. For a brief moment, she thought about letting go of the burning paper. Letting it catch fire of the desk, her, and the entire house. She blinked and threw the paper into the empty metal trash bin where it died into ashes.
