anything you can be, I can be greater sooner or later
Ash screwed her eyes shut and tightened her arms around Lane as the horse began moving beneath them, picking up speed. It was terrifying the way she instantly lost all sense of direction without the feeling of the ground beneath her. Yet, it was also perhaps the most exhilarating thing she had ever experienced. They were moving faster than she’d ever gone before and her hair whipped out behind her in the wind. She couldn’t tell where they were going, but at this moment, it didn’t matter. It felt exactly like Lane had said: they were flying.
Some of the tension relaxed from her body as Ash became more accustomed to the rhythm of the animal’s movement. She huffed out a pleased laugh, leaning forward slightly. “It’s amazing,” she told him, unable to keep the smile off her face. The thrill of the ride was not enough to completely distract her from the boy in front of her, however. Her breath hitched as she was suddenly struck by their proximity. Her fingers were still twisted in the front of his shirt from how tightly she was holding on, arms wrapped around him. She moved even closer to speak into Lane’s ear and be heard over the sound of the wind and the horse’s hooves against the ground.
Ash tried to convince herself that her increasing heart rate was thanks to the thrill of the ride, but she didn’t quite succeed. She knew she was starting to fall for Lane, despite the fact that she had no idea how he felt about her, or even if he did. All she knew was that she wanted him in her life, even if that was only as a friend. He was the only one who treated her like a normal person, and she didn’t want to scare him off if he didn’t reciprocate her feelings; but Ash couldn’t stop herself from leaning into him a bit, resting against his shoulder as the horse moved at an easy rhythm. “I can’t believe you get to do this all the time,” she said, shaking her head slightly in disbelief. Surely riding a horse was an almost every day occurrence for most people in their district, but she couldn’t imagine ever getting used to this, moving swiftly so high off the ground. Still, she wanted to get the full experience but she felt like they were holding back a little. “Can we go faster?” she asked eagerly. It had been scary at first, but she was sure she could handle it now, especially with Lane in control.

Lane smiled into the wind ahead of him. Even as he sped up, the ride wasn’t by any means his fastest or craziest. Once, he’d gone so far as to ride Mac bareback across the field in the pouring rain at a full gallop. This ride, though, would still go down as one of the most special yet for the sole reason that he was sharing the ride with Ash. What was missing in speed or thrill was made up for a million times over by the feel of Ash pressed against his back, the sound of her voice in his ear. So he rode on, not rushing the ride in any way. He rode through the fields, into the orchards, and near the barns. Finally, as Lane felt Mac slow beneath him, he allowed his horse to trot to the barn. Lane slowed to a stop, letting out a final laugh. ”I really hope you enjoyed that as much as I did,” he called back to her, his voice traveling on the wind still moving past them. So far, it had been a perfect day. A twinge of sadness ran through Lane at the thought of the moment being gone, but there was still hope that better ones were to come, whether they be more rides or different adventures. Adrenaline still rushed through his veins, still made him want to do more. Lane was pretty sure that the feeling wasn’t just from riding, but instead from the person he’d done it with. ”I’m gonna slide off now, so sit tight. Maybe hold onto the saddle if you’d want,” he warned Ash right before dropping off the side of the horse. There was a moment of sadness as the contact was broken. Truthfully, the feeling had been so intoxicating, and as soon as it was gone, Lane wanted to find a way to be in the same position again. Instead, he placed a hand on the side of the saddle to steady it. ”You’re up there alone now. I’m down here, so if you slide off to your left and stay upright, I can catch you.”

anything you can be, I can be greater
sooner or later
Ash had to mourn the end of their little adventure when the horse began to slow and came to a stop back where they had started. Although surely it had been long enough, if felt like only seconds had passed since they began the ride. “Of course I enjoyed it, are you kidding?” She laughed. She still couldn’t wrap her head around how riding horses was second nature to most of the people in their district. They didn’t think twice about it. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Ash didn’t think it would ever stop being thrilling for her.
She didn’t know quite how to thank Lane, or even express what it meant to her that he had invited her to do this with him. No one had ever invited her to go horseback riding before, and her parents had even expressly told her not to on occasion; But riding horses was so commonplace here that Ash didn’t think people understood how isolating it could be to not have that experience. It was just one more thing that everyone else had in common, yet set her apart. Thanks to Lane, she felt a little less like an outsider now. “Seriously, thank you. That was… really something special,” she said quietly, tightening her arms around him in a hug before leaning back so he could dismount.
She held onto the back of the saddle and slid forward a bit as Lane moved to the ground. “You promise you won’t let me fall?” she asked, reluctant to let go now that she found herself alone on top of the horse. She hadn’t felt in any danger when they were riding, but she admitted she was a little nervous to let go when she couldn’t tell how far away the ground was. She swung one leg over the horse and turned slowly so she was sitting sideways in the saddle, then felt out ahead of her until her fingers grazed Lane’s shoulder. “Okay, ready,” she said, pushing off from where she was seated. Her fall was less than graceful, and she knew she had miscalculated how high up she was when instead of smoothly landing on the ground, Ash crashed directly into the boy in front of her.
She instinctively gripped onto Lane tightly as she regained her balance. Any embarrassment she might have felt at her ungainly fall was quickly replaced with a very different kind of embarrassment when she realized how close the two were now standing. They had been this close, if not closer during the ride. In fact, she had even had her arms around him, but then they had a good reason. Not to mention, Lane couldn’t see whether or not she was blushing. She had no such protection now. “Sorry about that,” she murmured, trying to feign normalcy. She knew this had probably gone on too long. She should let go of him, get out of his personal space, but she felt glued where she stood.
