I swear when I grow up I won't just buy you a rose I will buy the flower shop and you will never be lonely "What? Those rumors can't be true! We can't have this happen tomorrow, Charles. I have a family, and if they get hurt...I just can't take that chance. We need to end this before it starts."
Madge sat outside of her father's office. Goosebumps crawled on the back of her neck. She didn't believe what she was hearing. She had heard the rumors around the Seam too, and yet, she didn't think it was going to happen. Sure, things were uneasy, but they weren't that bad, right? After the disaster last games with the technical difficulty, the petite blonde didn't know what to think. She had been too head-over-heels to realize how serious the world was around her. Even though she was rich, she had been an outcast all of her life.
Now, with the brewing war looming over her head, she knew that people would side against her. In all honesty, she didn't know what to think. She had been to the Capitol and loved it, though she would never admit her love for it--especially in District 12 where being Pro-Capitol was considered the worst thing one could think. But she did like the Capitol. They kept them safe, and though 12 was poor, they got away with a lot more things than most other districts did according to her father. Gale was pretty rebellious, and she played along, but she didn't know what would happen to her. When it came to the riots barging in on her father's door, which side would Gale be on? The thought of that terrified her.
She stood up, sliding her back against the wall. Madge rushed away from the office quietly, just as she had gotten there quietly. Tomorrow. Her body was shaking. Tomorrow, her and her whole family could be dead. Tomorrow, Gale could be dying for what he believed in. Tomorrow, the whole country could be wrecked by the harshness of tension and violence. And there was Madge. Young, naive Madge who never got involved in politics despite her being in the middle of it all. If she could cover her ears and hide in her room until someone set fire to the mansion, she might be okay with that. But now, she needed to have company besides her. She needed Gale.
The girl threw on a light cardigan, as though it was hot outside, the evening always came with a cool breeze. Madge would normally tell her parents where she was going, but now, she absolutely couldn't. They would refuse her leave, and she couldn't have that. Even if Gale pushed her away, she still needed to see him before everything went down. She left the home and closed the door quietly. It was sunset outside, and soon, she would only be guided by the moonlight in the darkness. As long as she got to Gale's house before then, she would be okay.
Madge and Gale's relationship was more than nice, she felt. To her, they seemed to overcome every odd that was stacked against them. The two couldn't be any more different, but that was what connected them. They both explored each other's worlds, one of a gritty reality and the other a polished fairytale. She was jobless and living off of her parent's money while he was working in the mines. She loved to cook for Gale, bringing him fun dishes almost every day. He was someone she wanted to make happy. Maybe even the most important person that she wanted to make happy.
The blue-purple skies of District 12 loomed over her as she picked up the pace. Madge was terrified of a fight that might break out while she was walking. But she had finally made it to Gale's home. One that she was so used to and loved going to. It felt like a second home to her. Even now, when she was terrified of both the rebellion and confronting Gale, the home gave her a warm feeling that she did enjoy. She knocked on the door, knowing that Gale would probably answer it. He always did, since she came over at least four times a week.
"Do you think we can talk in private?" She asked when Gale answered the door. Her head was lowered. She was almost ashamed to be talking about this, though she wished shame would mask the fear the she was feeling. WORD COUNT: 761 TAG: @hawthorne NOTES: Hope this is okay!

Everything was coming up so fast.
For years, the people of 12 had fostered bitter hatred. They took mine blasts that killed their families, they handled the walks into town in the winter that usually came with the addition of a corpse huddled on the sidewalk, dead from starvation, and they took whippings and punishments and long hours in the mines, and gave two children to the Games each year. The people of 12 had taken this and more for 76 years, silently enduring their pain until recently. Hatred towards the Capitol grew in each District with each passing day. Gale heard whispers in the mines of acts of rebellion grow louder. He got word of riots in the other Districts, like the war in District 4. Each of these things brought him hope, made him hold on for the promise of a better tomorrow.
It was natural, of course, that when the whispers of ideas became plans, Gale’s voice was a leading one. Many of the miners had blind apathy for those who caused their suffering, unable to direct their emotions to form the momentum needed to make change. But Gale’s agony had a well defined face that loomed in the back of his mind, torturing his every thought for almost a decade. He needed no direction.
Now that the time had come, Gale wasn’t scared. He’d always wondered how he would confront the possibility of death. In his life, Gale learned the lesson that there were things worse than death. He only feared for the safety of his family and of Madge, though securing them would be easy. None of the fighting would be happening in the Seam, after all. All the assaults were directed in the city, right at the source of the problem.
For days, Gale tried to decide just how to tell Madge of what was coming. As the mayor’s daughter, she couldn’t learn too much. The plan could be ruined. At the same time, she needed to know enough to keep her safe. The days ran out, leaving only one night for weeks worth of words.
As Gale sat on his bed, working to find a way to reach her, he heard a light, unmistakable rap on the front door. Madge. He sat up slowly, then forced himself to go to the door. Gale expected a smiling, blissfully unaware Madge, but instead found the opposite.
Fear was written across her face. She had no bright smile, no homemade dish in her hans. It only took a second’s worth of the sight of her to tell Gale that there could be no more stalling. She probably already knew everything he would tell her. Gale nodded, opening the door further. ” No one is home right now. The kids are all at school, and my mom will be at the Hub all day.” It was rare to have the house alone. Usually, it was bustling with people and life, but today, it happened to be what was probably one of the most private places within the District.
Gale allowed Madge to step past him, and with a breath he took in her sweet smell, her lovely face and beautiful clothes. Would these one day be pictures of a time long gone? Gale passed through the front room, moving into the kitchen in the back of the house. He took his place, standing with his back against a counter. After Madge was settled, he took a long, deep breath, and let it go before speaking. ”So,” Gale said, trying to meet her eyes, ”What is it that you know right now?”

Madge was normally never scared. She had been nervous and frustrated, but never felt genuine fear. Right now, with so much on the line, she felt genuine fear. She was good at hiding her emotions, especially when it came to happiness. Her face though, after learning about the rebellion, was an open book. She was scared for herself, scared for her parents, and terrified for Gale. If she lost both Gale and her parents, she wouldn't know what she would do. She would have absolutely nobody, and that was her biggest fear. She never wanted to be alone in the world, though with this uprising, she feared that she was going to. Madge grasped onto the side of her pale yellow dress without realizing it.
She looked up at Gale, seeing a face that already knew what was going on. He hadn't even said anything to her, which made her lips slightly frown. He had kept something from her that might determine the fate of her family. "Well, there's going to be a rebellion tomorrow, isn't there?" She asked softly. Her voice was quivering. It was like she was a scared child again who was afraid of the woods. Madge wanted to be strong, but she emotionally couldn't. She had been kept in the dark by both her family and her partner. It was a feeling of betrayal.
She sat down on a wooden chair at the kitchen table and signed. Her hands were in her lap She was fidgeting with her fingers, making motions that she normally would with the piano to keep all of her nervousness at bay. Madge looked down. When she was frustrated or nervous, she could never look people in the eye. It was just a trait of hers. "Why didn't you tell me? You know my family's stance on the rebellion. For all I know, you or my mother could die in this uprising. I could die. I don't want any of that to happen." Madge was holding back tears. She didn't want to seem like a naive little girl, not now especially, but she couldn't help it. It was all too much for her to handle.
"I need you to tell me the truth, okay?" She said, looking back up at him. "Do you plan on hurting my family? Because if you do, I don't know what I'm suppose to do. They haven't done anything wrong." WORD COUNT: 407 TAG: @hawthorne NOTES: Sorry so short

Gale was so tired of living in a world of fear. He could see that emotion painted across Madge’s face, in her every movement. He was tired of being afraid. His only remaining hope was that after tomorrow, there would be no need for it any longer. For now though, he had to push through what was remaining.
Though phrased as such, the words that left Madge’s lips were not a question. As Gale imagined, she knew. Truly, Madge didn’t need confirmation, not really. Still, he maintained eye contact and gave his answer. ”Yes.”
After his answer was given, Gale waited for the impending storm. He always worried about this specific moment, had done so since he first started talking to Madge. At the heart of it all, Gale was Seam and Madge was Merchant, and, by nature, had different interests. Gale knew that Madge saw his struggles, but at the end of the day, she fell asleep in her own bed that was left untouched by coal dust and weariness. She saw the struggles, but she never lived them.
Gale sighed as she spoke again. It was all so hard to hear. He was quiet for a moment as he let her finish. His heart twisted as he heard her specific fears. After she finished talking, Gale moved to the chair beside hers, scooting it closer. He picked up one of her tiny, fidgeting hands, and cupped it in both of his much larger ones. ”Before we go any further, I want you to know that my first plan involved how I was going to keep you safe. I’m not going to let anyone so much as touch you. I promise to you right now that you’ll be perfectly okay.” Gale sat back in his chair a bit, keeping hold of her hand as he did so.
”Truthfully, I don’t want to hurt anyone. But I don’t think that things can be changed without blood being spilled here. That being said, nobody is actually… targeting the mayor. He’s not really a concern. Besides, we don’t want any civilian losses.” Gale sighed again and took one of his hands. He ran it through his hair, resting in the ever familiar feeling of exasperation.
”This is… so important, Madge. My life, my family’s lives, and so many more people in 12 and in Panem, we’ve been living in some sort of hell. This has got to come to an end, and I feel obligated to help out.”

Madge has always been one to support Gale, even in his rebellious tendencies. She would always be there for him, even now when she was scared for her life. More than anything, she wanted to protect the brunette man she grew to love. She also wanted peace, though she questioned whether a change in leadership would solve any of their problems. For all she knew, there could be complete anarchy and Panem would be in complete chaos. She didn't want to live in a world like that, nor did she want to live in a world with the Hunger Games. The blonde was so conflicted in everything going on, but one thing was certain--she wanted to be with Gale. If she had to, she might even follow him so that neither he or her family got hurt.
She listened to him carefully, but couldn't seem to look him in the eye. When he said about how there would be blood being spilled while also avoiding her question was something she didn't seem too fond of. Madge was usually straightforward with Gale, and yet, he couldn't seem straightforward with her. Madge didn't believe him when he said that nobody was targeting her father. Of course people would be--he was the one who enforced the rules and communicated with the Capitol. There was no way he wasn't a target.
"I understand," she said. "And I'm glad you're passionate in something. I really am. But I have a family too. Just because we've lived a different lifestyle doesn't mean they're involved in this whole mess. I don't care about keeping myself safe. I care more about keeping you and my family safe. If neither of you come back, I don't know what I'm going to do. For me, that isn't an option." Madge's breath was heavy and her tears finally shed from her eyes. She knew she was fragile and naive, but she needed to tell him what she thought.
"Even if the rebels win, what makes you think things will change? Do you think money will just be sliding in and given to everyone? Will everyone just stop working and celebrate? I know the Hunger Games are bad and things in District 12 are worse, but what if things don't get better like everyone is hoping for?" Madge put intensity in her voice, something that had never really happened with her. She was usually soft-spoken and quiet, but now, she was filled with fear and doubt. She wanted everything to be okay, but she didn't know if things would get better or worse for everyone. WORD COUNT: 435 TAG: @hawthorne
