WEAKNESSES: Blind, stubborn, bad temper
FEARS: Being underestimated and overlooked
SUMMARY: In her shoes, others may feel sorry for themselves or worry that they won't be able to do everything a seeing person could. However, Ash has never let the fact that she is blind stop her. She adapts to unknown surroundings every day, so she is confident in new situations and strange places. Even if she does get turned around, she tries not to let her confusion show. She hates more than anything to appear weak, and is wary about accepting help from people. She's been known to snap at people who insist she can't do something because she's blind. She's stubborn to a fault in this way, more willing to fail than to admit that she needs help. If given the choice, she'd almost always choose to work alone. Rather than talk about what she can't do, Ash would much rather focus on how being blind has helped her. She has a near perfect memory for locations, having memorized much of the area around her home so that she can travel freely. In addition, due to her reluctance to accept help, she's learned how to do many things for herself despite her disability.
HISTORY
DISTRICT: District 10
FATHER: Aiden Winslow
MOTHER: Lucretia Winslow
SIBLINGS: Two older brothers
HiSTORY: Ash is the youngest child of the Winslow family. One might expect her to be babied, being the youngest child and the only daughter, but this rings especially true for Ash because she was born blind. Her parents had heard that in the Capitol, blindness was easily fixed, but the Winslows were farmhands, and not particularly prosperous, so they could never afford the operation. While her family and others seemed to pity the little blind girl, Ash never considered herself to be disabled. She could do anything that others could do, even if it took her a little longer to figure it out. While her parents wanted to keep her at home where they could look after her, Ash longed to work and wander freely about her district. Her mother was especially protective of the girl, but Ash, with the help of her father and brothers, managed to find solutions that would allow her a relatively normal childhood. She was able to get limited freedom by memorizing the area around her family farm, knowing where she was by counting steps. Her brothers helped her by creating a scaled down map of first, their home, then their neighborhood, and increasing further locations, using carved wooden blocks to represent buildings. In this way, Ash memorized the streets of her district by touch and earned some small freedom, although her family still worried she would get lost.
Ash detested not being able to work on the farm with her family, but working with livestock was out of the question. She quickly found her place on the farm, however, when her father set her up with a small garden behind the barn. There she grew flowers, herbs, and even some small crops. She learned how to tell each plant by the shape of the leaves, and gardening quickly became her favorite pastime. She was even able to sell some of her bounty in the market. With a lot of work and some creative solutions, Ash prides herself on being able to sustain herself. She loathes people's impression of her as the pitiful blind girl, and looks for every opportunity to prove them wrong in her day to day life.
