History: Aspen is an orphan. Her mother was a middle class woman from a respectable family, while her father was a drunk that never worked in a day in his life. Her mother, Laura, was beautiful. She was loving and kind, but allowed herself to be taken advantage by those that claimed to love her. Michael, Aspen's dad, wasn't a good man. He was toxic and manipulative. Shortly after Laura discovered she was pregnant with Aspen, Michael took off. Nobody bothered to investigate where he went, but after a while, people just assumed he was dead. There wasn't really anywhere to go except the wilderness, which would've ended in certain death anyways; either by the elements or being caught by the Capitol's millions of cameras.
Laura passed while she was giving birth to Aspen. She left her daughter with practically nothing, since her family disowned her when they discovered she was dating Michael. They wanted nothing to do with her or her future child after they realized Michael was Aspen's father.
Because all minors must have a guardian, Aspen was placed in the care of a distant relative. Her cousin Penelope raised her. Penelope was a young woman who often 'mingled' with peacekeepers. She had to provide somehow, right? Penelope raised Aspen as best she could, but she was far from a parent. She was only 19 when she realized she'd have to care for Aspen.
During her childhood, Aspen was a fiery little girl. She fought for what she wanted and never let anyone tell her otherwise. This got her into trouble quite often. As she entered her teen years though, she realized the reality of the Games. When her 12th birthday arrived, she didn't know how to feel. Penelope told her she was becoming a woman- but she was also eligible to be reaped for the Hunger Games. How she could be excited? There was no logic in celebrating her birthday when it also signified the very real possibility she could die.
Unfortunately, Penelope's creative ways of putting food on the table just weren't enough, and Aspen had to enter her name for tessera. It wasn't something the makeshift family was very proud of, but they would've starved otherwise. The two were just thankful they'd be eating something. Food was hard to come by.
