It was raining sponsors at the time. It was crazy in my opinion. Honestly there were five to ten sponsors in this area and I have to admit- I don't mind it. I grin when I open mine up. Finally they have noticed that the struggle of carrying everything was getting hard. I take all of my items and place it in the bag, including the food, compass, and other items. As I look down I saw him struggling with making a fire along with keeping all his items with him. I can't help but chuckle at him, "Here, put some stuff in here. I got it with my sponsor." I say as I place the backpack near him. I kneel down and try to rack through my brain to remember how to make a fire. I honestly don't know, so I just attempt to rub sticks together in attempts to light it. I look up at him for a while, with a small smile on my face spreading. My idea was going to be useful, or I hope.

Raya looked at Harrison through the trees. She wasn't sure if he was going to hurt her. There was something wrong with him, and she knew it. She loved him, yes, but looking at him, he seemed troubled. She knew that she shouldn't have left him, that she shouldn't have even made contact with Cameron. This was her fault. Why was it always her fault? She didn't understand. Maybe it was Thomas' pressure over her that she was always the one to blame. Her mind was always set for negativity, but she could not have that during the games. Maybe she would die, but that didn't mean that she couldn't help the only person she ever loved.
Climbing down the tree, the girl searched through her backpack. She found a medical kit in there, glad that she had something useful in her pack. Raya grabbed the kit and left the backpack over by the tree, keeping her whip tied to her belt loops. She knelt down to him, and she could tell that he was in deep slumber. His face was soaked with sweat, and he looked distraught. "It's okay," she whispered to him. "Nobody is going to hurt you. I'm here." She told him in a calm voice as he tried to fix his cuts. She used to help some of the younger prostitutes in District 8 when they had whip scars or bruises. It was something she got used to, but she was far from being any sort of doctor.
Once she was done, she sat by him. He seemed to be having a horrific dream, and Raya understood what that felt like and waking up to a living nightmare. She had gone through it several times, and she didn't want Harrison to go through it like she had. She rubbed his back, hoping that he would feel better. "I shouldn't have left you. It was all my fault," she mostly mumbled to herself. She had to get it out of her system, and she finally did when talking to Harrison in his sleep.
She saw him twitch and knew he was waking up. Walking back a bit, Raya had known from experience that it wasn't going to be a good eye-opener. He scream, something that she had experienced as well when she had the nightmares. "Nothing happened," she said quietly to him in a calming voice. She hoped that he didn't hurt her, flinching a bit as she had done when any Peacekeeper or Thomas or Customer tried to hurt her. "I fixed your wounds. You need to rest before something bad happens." Raya saw the two tributes from a distance, scared that they would try to kill Cam, Harrison, and Raya. Even though they were smaller, it was obvious that they were tough since they made it through the first two days. But Raya wasn't the one to start a fight. She would never hurt another human unless she absolutely had to by using defense. But she knew a fight would break out soon, and she knew that if she were to stay alive, she would need to fight as well.

SIRI"The difference between want and need is self control"
The day was almost over and no deaths. In fact, the game seemed to have slowed even more and instead of fighting, the tributes were allying together. The room went dark as she pulled into her mind. The fear of President Snow's voice was echoing in her mind. Yes, Seneca would have to pay for not providing the President with the fights that he had hoped for. But Siri would have to pay, too. She thought back to the previous game when President Snow gathered everyone into a room. And then forced the camera crew to stand against the wall. Then without even a flinch, ordered for Peacekeepers to execute them. The blood walls. The blood floors. She remembered how her shoes stuck to the floor as she walked. How, as soon as she got home, vomited into the toilet as her Avox helped her take off the sticky shoes and clothes splattered with blood. Nightmare after nightmare. Every night. Sometimes she'd still get those nightmares. The idea that she could be next made her shake.
But everyone was on the same wavelength. They were all thinking that same thing. The Gamemakers prepared their first traps.
The Forest. That's where most of the tributes where. Siri, looked down at her screen and typed in the codes, waiting for the rest of the team to accept them. Then, once the green light came on, she pressed the button. On the screen, she could see the island begin to move. It rumbled from beneath the island. Inside the volcano, the magma flowed violently. Then the island shook even harder.
The critters in the forest scattered, the birds flew quickly away from the trees and into the sky. Then the trackerjacker hives fell to the ground.
The volcano continued to shake. It was far from over. The magma began rise higher and higher towards the top of the volcano. Siri watched the tributes as chaos ensued in the arena from the trackerjackers' attacks. She wondered if they even knew what was about to happen...

All of the sudden, the birds in the forest had started to scatter along with the millions of rabbits that had infested the grounds. I have to ask myself why, but the answer is oh so too quick, suddenly all the tracker jacker nests that have rested above us dropped down. I can't help but scream in surprise. Though that scream turns into oh so much more as the jackers turn onto us. I scream, and I have to take my backpack. Screaming at Matthias, I tell him to run. I don't care if he follows me or not, I hope he does, because that meant I'd lost my ally. But I need to run. We're warriors, and warriors always run. My steps start to falter, and I am almost worried I won't make it. I most likely won't knowing the sick gamemakers. They say everybody likes an underdog, well, this underdog is about to go under. And not in any good way. I attempt to run, as fast as I can. I don't care where I go- but I run.

The scream had filled Cameron's ear before he even recognized what was happening. Suddenly, there was a huge swarm of bees colliding on his face. He jumped down from the tree, not caring about anything. He had a grip on his spear and bag, and all he knew was to run. This was the gamemaker's 'entertainment' for the day. Killing us with bees. Perfect. That seems just spectacular, doesn't it? Cameron shook his head, he was too busy entertaining himself when really he should be running. As Cameron ran, he noticed only one of them had really gotten out, and it was the one small girl from five. The second youngest of all the tributes alive. Cameron had to grin, it was always fun to see the young ones get far. It wasn't some kind of deadly taunt. He just personally thought that the younger ones should get farther, not the older. It bothered him. That the young ones were practically fodder for the ones that were Cameron's age. But, Cameron shouldn't be worrying about it now. All he should be worrying about is running. And run he will. 2JJgWKAvtrap trap

He squinted tightly, trying to make the pain of his dream just abandon him. Harrison didn't like the fact that literally all but one of his family members were killed in some kind of rebellion. The tribute didn't even attempt to think of what was actually happening there now. There was no time to think. Out of all the people he saw, Harrison, in comparison, was doing the worst out of the five. He would be an easy kill for just anyone to stab twice. It took three or four slashes to the arm and leg to end up like this, and the pain was not something he wanted to experience. Raya was the next figure he saw come down to the ground. She went towards Harrison, and the boy feared she might put him out of his misery. "Please... Raya.." he said before she made comforting gestures to him, and even fixed up his wounds that were so bad it wouldn't be hard to find bone with less than a second of reaching in. The bandages made his arm feel lighter and more powerful, but his pain was still as hard as ever. He spoke as he reached for her dark hair, "Th-" his gratefulness was rudely disrupted by the tweeting of birds as they flew up. The forest was a dangerous place to be because of all the creatures that lurked. Hives began dropping from the ground, several of them, actually. Harrison was startled and started backing away right away, doing a "crab walk" back into the bushes and trees. Harrison wasn't too fast on his feet, but he tried his best to maneuver to the best of his ability. He looked behind him, to see if Raya was coming, but in the rush nobody would follow, they'd just run. At least that is what Harrison would do, and he did. Now up on his feet, he ran with his good leg, dragging his second for speed. "Raya!" he exclaimed in a fearful voice, wishing to hear it. But with the hive dwellers, who knows if its possible to. 2KZ2xV8atrapHP: 9/23 or 4.5/23 ORRR 0/23 Actions: Receives Medicals from Raya WC: 357 Tags: Matthias Jensen @basil @jioudistrict11ftrib @raya trap

Shivering. Shaking. She knew something bad was going to happen from the start. No. Bees. She could hear the buzzing in her ears. It was taking over from the drums. It was a worse sound. No. No, something bad was going to happen. She was going to die, she knew it. The gamemakers hated her. She killed that District 6 girl. She killed someone today, and maybe that was what she would be remembered for. She didn't want to be remembered that way. Not as the girl who killed or the slut. She didn't know if she would even be remembered. She turned from the bees and got up, trying to run. Were her legs moving? She didn't know. Wings, bees, hurt, tributes running everywhere. Harrison was gone. He had left her. No. But maybe he should have left her to die. She left him. This was her fault. The bees were her fault. The drums were her fault. Getting Harrison into the games was her fault. She had to get out of here. She had to leave to the beach again. Please. Leave. Let me Leave.
No. She whispered, hoping that she was able to get out of there.

Lady Stardust, sing a song of darkness and disgrace
Though the girl was fast, she wasn't fast enough. She tripped on a rock--clumsy girl, she was always tripping on things and messing everything up. Those bugs, they swarmed her. She saw three people running away, some harmed while others weren't touched. It was funny to think that she even had a chance to win. Her luck was always horrendous though, so why even bother thinking it? Dreams definitely never came true for Raya, not once. Maybe this was karma for killing Thomas and that girl from 6. But Raya didn't feel as if she was dying. The blood coming out of her pores? To her, it wasn't blood. It was simply rain. Crawling to a tree, she rested against it. She closed her eyes and opened them back up, seeing different things. Her family, Thomas, the little girl back home. The drums pounded louder. It hurt. Her head was hurting as well as her ears, but she didn't have the strength to hold them. Everything in the world was gone for Raya. The gamemakers killed two children, and she hoped that they would remember that. As she started dying, her surroundings began to change. It changed to District 8, in the ally where she hid when she was scared. It was her own little hiding place, her own little corner. And Harrison was there too. He held her in her hallucination, and she just smiled. The girl was still so unaware of her death that was happening at that moment. She was in the clouds, sleeping with her eyes open, dreaming without unconscious. Raya held her stomach, looking up at the fictional Harrison. "Stay with me," she whispered to him, wanting this moment to last forever. "I'm here" he said, and all she could do was smile. "That's all I need to know. Rain can't hurt me," she said to him, trying to keep her eyes open. Her breathing became heavy, but she figured that it became heavy because he took her breath away. She wanted to believe that this was real, but in the back of her mind, she knew it wasn't. She knew that she was dying, but she refused to believe it. She wanted to believe that someone was there to care for her, to help her with her last dying breath. But nobody was there. Nobody was going to help her. She was already dead the night her parents died. But she didn't believe any of it. All Raya wanted in her life was to be happy. But happiness was nothing to Raya. Raya didn't even know what happiness was. All of her life, she had gone through hell. Drugs and sex was her life story. She was worthless. She was used. She was dead. But now, the girl was physically dying, and she was happy. The first time in her life, she felt warm and close with the one person she loved. Death was just a hallucination, and this was real life. Being with Harrison in the one place she felt safe--it was real. The games and everything else? It was fake. That was the hallucination given to her, not the happiness. Though the drums still beat in her head, they were comforting. It was soft, like music that could help put her to sleep. Calm, like the little pitter-patter of the rain hitting against her skin. A draft of sleep came upon her as she stayed close to the fictional Harrison. She had a sudden feeling that she had to go somewhere, but she didn't want to leave. She had to stay, to be with him and to raise their child. She remembered, the night before the games, when her mentor took her to the doctor in the Capitol. She remembered when the doctor looked at the child, but Raya wasn't happy, she was scared. She needed to find out if it was Harrison's or Thomas' or a random Peacekeeper, and since the Capitol had a database of every citizen and their DNA, they looked it up. When she saw it on the screen, it said his name. Harrison Martial. What were the odds? But she wasn't glad, she was frightened. She knew that she was going to die, and she knew that Harrison might die too. She couldn't tell him, and for that, she didn't. But this sudden urge to leave brought it upon her. "I have to go soon love," she told him, grazing his fictional cheek. "But I wanted to let you know that it's yours. You're gonna be a father," she whispered to him happily. She coughed, but what just felt like a normal cough to her was really blood in the arena. Everything was falling into place. She closed her eyes, wanting to sleep. Maybe Harrison could carry her home to her mother and father and tuck her into bed. Maybe she would wake up the next morning and see him, making her tea. Maybe they would get married and both never have to work again since they were given a bunch of money from Thomas' will. Maybe their little boy or girl would be smart and go to school. They would be so smart that they would be excluded from going into the Hunger Games or getting in a bad situation. Maybe Harrison and her would be the best parents anyone could be, and they would be happy despite everything that happened in the past. Maybe the two would grow old together and keep each other warm. Maybe the two would die in their sleep, holding each other and smiling. But maybe that was never possible. "Maybe" was never good enough for Raya. And now, like every other time, it wasn't. She just wanted to go home now, and maybe that was the place that gave her the urge to go to. But everything was fading. She began to go cold. Her drums pounded harder and harder, making it impossible to think about anything. Her breath was now extremely heavy, harder than it has ever been. It had begun so hard to breathe now, so hard to think, so hard to see. She was leaving now, and she knew it. But instead of going to her home, she knew where she was going. She was going to the nice place her mother used to tell her about. It had a castle on a cloud, where everything was happy and food wasn't scarce. Nobody ever told you what to do nor where to go. Everything was calm and sickness was non-existent. Her body became heavy and she could no longer move her head or her arms. With her lips parted, she spoke her last words. "I don't wanna go," she said with a tear falling from her eye, but she was already gone. Lady Stardust was now dead and without a sound. HP: 0/23 ITEMS: In inventory list, up for grabs if you want to, you know, take it off of her dead body. First come first serve and such.
Well, don't say that I didn't see it coming xD I was literally thinking about not writing a death post because I probably cried for about an hour and couldn't bring myself to do it lol. But, you know, the show must go on, and Sydney must write a death post. Thank god I'm gming next games because I need to stop getting emotionally attached to my characters haha. Anyways, I want to thank everyone for, you know, helping Raya out. Thanks for sponsoring her, helping her out, and giving her a good storyline that I absolutely loved to write. Thanks to Eileen and Cyr for making these games and making them super awesome. Both of you are the bomb dot com and deserve a big round of applause. Thank you Rebecca for making me feel things with Ari and Matthias--that little dude rocks. Thank you to Trist for helping Raya get a whip (though she didn't even get to use it xD) and for supporting her character. Thank you Legit for just being a genuinely awesome person, and I'm rooting for Calem to be in at least the final two. And special thanks to Matti for helping to develop Raya's character all the way through, as she wouldn't be the same without Harrison. I'm also super excited that Emmie, Lilith, and Emmy will (hopefully) be joining the next games so we can see how they will play out their characters. You are all beautiful people, and I'm excited to see how the rest of the games play out. WORD COUNT: 1450

Matthias' attempt at fire failed, although he shouldn't have expected any better. Back home, Aramis was probably laughing at him, watching the brother he never liked fail at carrying out the only plan that might have let him make it out of these Games alive. If he had started a fire, they could have carried out Basil's plan of setting the forest on fire. It might not kill everyone, but it would have done some serious damage. And yet, a part of him was grateful it hadn't worked. He wasn't responsible for anyone's death yet. He moved aside easily when Basil wanted a chance at starting it and went to collect the pile he had left on the ground.
Matthias nodded at Basil's suggestion and stuffed all of his sponsor-provided items, except the knife, into her backpack. This last he held onto, because surrounded by tributes as they were, he had to be ready to defend both of them. The boy watched as Basil too failed at lighting the fire. He had taken the sticks back from Basil to try again when he heard his ally scream. Jerking up to a standing position, Matthias quickly found the source of that scream, coming straight at them: a horde of airborne creatures. If the scattering animals and ominous buzzing hadn't given away that whatever these creatures were weren't good, the frightened look on Basil's face certainly did it. The boy pushed his legs into action and ran.
The only conscious direction Matthias took was away from the creatures, and away from where he had last seen the mutt that had chased himself and Basil. He just ran.

As he ran, the deadly stings from whatever was chasing after him buried themselves deep into Harrison's body, causing him to swell up. His head pounded, and his now practically useless legs were now down on the ground, his back on the tree he saw closest. Time was not important when you were running for your life. Others were not important at that moment, but became lethal afterwards. Harrison couldn't hear the bees soaring around trying to get their fair share. Mr. Martial, with a sign of relief, closed his eyes for just a second or two. He saw a gross and terrifying monster eating all the people in the hospital alive, without mercy or the least bit of hesitation. Harrison, after digesting the first glimpse, opened his eyes. He screamed louder than he did when he began his run. Right after, almost planned, a cannon blew. The cannon turned into several cannons with his hallucination, even if there only was one. Harrison's feet attempted to crawl up to go back; to see where Raya was. His feet were still not moving at the same pace as other places. Harrison decided to crawl with the little strength he had left for a while. It took him an even longer time to get back to where they were. Partially because his mind wouldn't remind him, and the other reason was because he didn't dare look to see what was happening. Maybe the bees were waiting to claim more prey than just the first death. His arms grabbed onto fabric, but with a tighter grip was flesh. He was right beside the corpse. Mr. Martial spoke out in a quiet tone, "R-raya?" He looked down at her face, which seemed to turn into more than that. He shook his head, trying not to believe what he saw to be a reality. It was too harsh of a reality to see the person you want alive dead. "No- Raya.. w.. wake up.." he fumbled words out, trying to hold back the tears he'd later use as a sparing. He grabbed towards the bag she had, unzipping it slowly. It wasn't because he was scared, for he was unable to do it quickly. He couldn't see her dead like this. He took the canteen of water and began to unzip his own bag. Harrison took out his own canteen and put in the other. He also took the flashlight he had given Raya in the beginning and took it for himself. That left the tarp, the bag for food, the lighter, his machete, fishing line, and watch. Plus the canteen and flashlight. Mr. Martial gladly tossed out the watch, as it was obvious he'd know what time it was. He took the rope he gave her earlier. He had enough to carry then, so he left Raya's body. The Capitol would probably be waiting to pick it up soon, and Harrison didn't want to get penalized for being too close. For all they could know, Harrison might hitch a ride out of the arena with Raya. But he couldn't, no. Harrison had to keep fighting for her. Crawling, Harrison was scared. Raya died this easily, and with Harrison injured like that, it would be even easier for him. Harrison used his arms to pull himself along. Hopefully nobody dangerous was following. The buzzing once again entered his head, and he used what little strength he had left to look up, trying not to shake too much. It would make him look like an easy target, but being calm just meant he wanted to be sneaky. Harrison was not all looks, and he never would be. He had quite a lot of common sense, enough to keep his sanity for a little while. His common sense would run out soon enough, and he'd just sob all day. But now, no. He couldn't let that happen. There were so many nice people that had to die soon. He had to get back now that Raya was gone. There was nothing that could possibly tick him off enough to stop him. As his head pounded trying to make sense of the object, he moaned quietly. There was another parachute. He'd seen so many in the hour, and some were even for him. It made him feel loved that people actually cared, and that people thought he had guts. Mr. Martial expected himself to die by now, but he was still standing high and with pride. He continued to look up towards the parachute until it landed on his shaking back. Just that made him feel defenseless. Maybe, if the people were intelligent, might have something to save Harrison with. "Guess they're smart," he muttered in a quiet voice, trying not to attract too much attention. He opened the package with care, tears filling up in his eyes. Raya was dead! When he looked back, Mr. Martial couldn't see her corpse. She was gone, forever.
He ripped open the package with his fingernails, trying not to act so eager. Some people weren't as lucky to get a lot of sponsors, some might not get any throughout the games. The number of people left was a mystery. The less people, the more handy the item could be. Looking at it, he found another kind of liquid, one that was different from the other he received earlier. It wasn't pink. Carefully, he sipped into it slowly. Whatever it was, it didn't feel too bad on his tongue. He drank in all in a matter of seconds. Because even with a little thirst, the strength of having the quenched throat could mean the difference between life and death.
Carefully he left the bottle there, along with the package holder. "Thanks," he said aloud with a smile. Maybe the Capitol liked his personality and how he was pretty relaxed. Unlike some teens that were rebels. Harrison was never a fan of the Capitol, but he didn't openly say that. That would make the traps bigger and more deadly towards him. Mr. Martial couldn't let that happen, it would kill him probably. Maybe that was what the bees were for, the ones that mainly went after Raya. She didn't seem to be too found of the Capitol or their allies. Was that their way to punish her? If so, it made Harrison a very unhappy camper. You can't just pick and choose who you want to die just because they aren't agreeing with your virtues. Harrison, with an upset look on his face, seemed a bit physically stronger. He still crawled, towards a few bushes. He could hide there.

Matthias wanted desperately to reach up and turn his hearing off as he ran, because the buzzing was such a horrible sound, but he didn't. He needed to know if they were still after him. After a while, the buzzing sound fell back behind him. The forest was mostly silent when he finally slowed. As if unsure if his hearing was deceiving him, the boy searched around him for any sign of the buzzing creatures. His eyes were still more reliable than his ears, and it would take a while to really trust the new gift from the Capitol entirely. But, somehow, the youngest tribute in the arena he had managed to escaped the angry horde that had been after him. He took a moment to inspect himself for stings, although hadn't felt anything. Satisfied that he was wound-free, he sat down under a tree, trying to catch his breath. Had Basil survived the horde? In the chaos, he hadn't seen. She could have gone any direction, been less lucky than himself and be lying dead somewhere. The thought made him shudder. He knew only one of the two of them could possibly survive the whole arena, but he still worried about her. He knew he should just move on, try making it on his own so he wouldn't have to fight her later, but he wouldn't be satisfied until he found out if she was okay or not. Once his breathing was somewhat normal, Matthias stood again and walked quickly back to where he thought the clearing was. Would it be better if she was dead, or alive? He wanted her to be alive, but if she were dead... He turned his thoughts to finding something to eat. He pulled some leaves off of a familiar plant to chew on. The task gave him only temporary relief from his confusing thoughts. Matthias noms on some plants:GiGt4G_K7skillDirection didn't fail him as horribly as it had when running from the mutt, and he was surprisingly able to find the place they had all been moments before without too much trouble. Only now, the clearing was empty; the only signs that the area had once been occupied was the pile of sticks he had made, a pair of discarded items, and the bundle of his own sponsor gifts. Everyone's haste to get out of there was probably the only thing that preserved his presents. He picked up the pile and glanced toward the two items laying alone. Didn't those mean someone already had come back, and looted through something? Had someone been killed in that attack? Matthias lifted his knife, holding it in front of him as he walked forward. Squatting down, he set his bundle down and inspected the other items. The watch was a curious thing to find in the arena. What on earth good would that do? Telling time had never been very useful even back home, when paying attention to it at school made the day go slower and the animals didn't much care about it. It wasn't something he wanted, not back then and certainly not now. He didn't want to know how much time was passing here. The canteen too seemed useless, since it was empty and one of his recent gifts was water. He could refill the pouch that contained it as he needed to. So he straightened again, tucking his sponsor bundle under one arm and keeping the knife held in the other. Where had everyone gone? Any bodies must have been taken already, so he didn't know how many tributes the buzzing beasts had taken, if any. He couldn't see or hear anyone still around. But he needed to find Basil, if she were still alive. Picking a direction, Matthias just started walking. HP: 28 Inventory: 1 tarp (actually, this was probably lost), 1 sponsor drawing, 1 Day's Worth of Food, 1 Day's Worth of Water, Invisibility Cloak, and 1 small knife (6-inch) +1 damage (equipped) (all of which he must carry in his arms.) WC: 631 Notes/Actions: Gah I feel like this is a sucky post, but I just needed Math to be somewhere. He basically just came back to the spot they all were, checked it out, and started walking again. Anyone gunna run into this guy? 7skill

Matthias didn't really know where he was going, but it seemed like he was alone. Or at least, no one was out in the open. He looked cautiously around himself as he walked, hoping no one was just hiding out there, watching him. But Matthias was distracted by more beeping. It was a sound he had come to look forward to, and he smiled as he wondered what his sponsors had decided to send him this time. Stopping, he watched the new gift come down, much larger than even his last bundle had been. In fact, it almost looked as if his sponsors were dropping in another tribute for them all to contend with due to its size and shape. Curious, the boy approached it after it had landed.
The armor had only slightly more color than the suits they had been put into the arena in, though he liked the stripes of blue. Then he read the note affixed to it. Fire and heat resistant? Why would they send him this? He was in the middle of the forest, far from any sort of fire or the volcano they had all started at. Unless... unless his sponsors were sending him a message?
They had to be. They had seen him earlier, had heard his talk with Basil. Of course. It was her idea, anyway. He couldn't exactly carry the armor around, so he'd have to wear it. He put down his bundle of sponsor gifts, though after a second of pause, picked up the invisibility cloak again. If this were to work, it might get burned and it could be useful later So, Matthias fastened it around himself, giggling a little at how it made him disappear, then started affixing his armor around both himself and the cloak. It was kinda hard, since he couldn't actually see himself to do it, which just made him smile more.
Once the armor covered him completely, he picked up what was left of his other belongings: the knife and a day's worth of food and water. Matthias ate and drank as he made his way back to the section of forest where all the tributes had been before the flying mutts attacked them, CONSUMING 1 DAYS WORTH OF FOOD AND 1 DAYS WORTH OF WATER. The pile of sticks he had made was still there, untouched. You'd hardly know that not an hour or so ago this place had been swarming with bees and tributes alike. Kneeling down - which was kinda awkward in this armor - Matthias started again to work on his fire,.

Matthias grit his teeth, feeling the frustration build. How could something that looked so easy when his brothers and father did it be so difficult now? He and Basil had both failed at making the fire before, and he continued to fail. This whole thing wouldn't work if he couldn't get the fire going. A lighter or matches would be a great thing to have right now, but he couldn't really expect his sponsors to give him absolutely everything. They had given him so much already, and now it was his turn to prove just how worthwhile all of these gifts were.
He shook his head, pausing in his efforts to take a breath. He just knew his frustration was showing on his face, like all of his emotions always did. He could never hide a single thing from his face. Everyone could be watching them right now, and the last thing he wanted all of them to think was that he was losing hope. And he knew people were watching him right now, and that's what pushed him forward to keep trying to light this fire.

Still, nothing. Not even a spark. The only evidence that the boy was trying to start a fire was the ache in his hands. Frustration getting the better of him, Matthias threw the sticks and stood up, walking around his little pile. Was he doing it wrong? At home, they used rocks sometimes, but he couldn't see a single rock anywhere around him. Just lots and lots of sticks. Wood, vines, trees... great things for catching on fire, but not great things for starting them.
Did he really want to do this anyway? How many people would get hurt if this worked? But... what was his alternative? Wait for one of the surviving tributes to find him and kill him quickly? Because he knew he couldn't fight. He knew that against another tribute, especially if any of the careers were still alive, he was dead the moment they spotted him. This was all he had. This was what his sponsors were telling him to do; now he just had to make it happen.
Picking up the sticks he had thrown, Matthias set to trying for his fire again.

Matthias' hands felt raw as he he kept rubbing, running them down the stick over and over again. He had to keep wiping his hands off in the dirt to get rid of the sweat, and later bit of blood, that covered them. It hurt, and he wanted so badly to give up. Maybe there was another way to start this fire, or maybe there was something else that the boy could do to survive in this arena. He'd done alright so far... but of course, that had been without running into other tributes aside from his ally.
No. He was going to make this work. He had to. If he gave up now, what then? His sponsors would realize they were just pulling for a weakling, who didn't even have it in him to start a fire. He couldn't have them thinking that. Whether he survived or died in this arena, he couldn't have people thinking again that he was just the stupid deaf kid, with no real chance of amounting to much of anything.
Matthias kept trying.

Matthias tried to focus his thoughts on other things as he worked on the fire. Anything that would help him take his mind off of his aching hands had to be good. Thinking about Falro right now, or his family, just reminded him of his disappointing he was being to all of them right now. That wasn't helping, so instead the boy's thoughts drifted to the day he had met Falro, which was before he'd been reaped for this Games.
Falro had happened upon Matthias as the boy was sitting on a fence, trying to draw a herd of sheep. It was one of the baby lambs that Matthias was most focused on, who kept running after his mother in an attempt to try and get some milk. He would almost clamp on to one of her nipples before his mother would walk off in another direction. Sometimes the little lamb would fall down since his balance was off, but each time he let out the most adorable little sound. The lamb had walked right up to them too, and the look on Falro's face as he pet the lamb was one of the kindest Matthias had ever seen.
We didn't start the fire! It was always burning, since the world's been turning... 2ZFg8t1d5skill

Matthias almost didn't see the tiny spark of flame that started on his sticks. He'd been too lost in that day with Falro, how long ago? But movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention, and he jumped a little to see the small bit of flame at the end of his stick. He grinned, setting the small flame closer to the large pile of sticks. He blew on it, like he had seen his brothers and father do. In a couple of seconds, it had caught on to the other sticks and started licking up the dry wood.
Standing, Matthias looked down proudly at his handiwork. He had done it! He had created fire! His hands were throbbing and he had nearly given up, but he had finally done it! As the fire caught the small pile of sticks, he slid back on the gloves and helmet to his armor. Inside, it was a little warm, and he hoped it really would protect him from what was coming next. He hoped this really worked. Taking in a deep breath, Matthias reached down into the fire and picked up handful of the burning pieces of wood in each hand. Even though he could see the fire and knew that it was hot, he couldn't feel a thing through the armor.
Good. Now for the even harder part.
Matthias still couldn't see another tribute around him, but they were out there. Who knows how many of them were. He had to do it now, before he resolve weakened. Or before another tribute found him. He hoped, with all that he was, that Basil wasn't nearby. That she had gotten far away from the forest, and maybe had gone back to their beach. That's where he decided he was heading, if he could find it. Pushing himself forward, the boy touched the fire to the nearest bush. It quickly caught. He walked forward, touching the burning pieces of wood in his hand to bushes, trees and grass alike. As the fire started catching he started walking faster.
Even though he couldn't feel it, it was terrifying to see all around him. The fire just kept growing. He was running before he realized it, and he finally threw down the sticks and all out sprinted. Now he just wanted to get to the beach, and away from the fire he had created.
