Aria laughed a little nervously along with Elias when he commented on what she'd said. "Yeah, well I guess I'm not the usual girl," was all she could think to say. Maybe it was normally a guy's phrasing, but somehow it seemed to fit things. Of course she'd thought about sleeping with him, alongside other fantasies, because how could she not? But it wasn't just that, and that's what she was trying to get at. There were several girls who came to bars not to be romantically swept off their feet, but to literally be on the way to a bed or bathroom or dark corner. She wasn't one of those girls. Most of the time, anyway, she didn't. Aria had hoped for something concrete when she asked Elias why he always turned her down. She'd tried to never put any pressure on him when she did this. She'd only ask if he wanted to grab breakfast after a long night, or when he once mentioned a restaurant he liked, she'd suggested they go there. He'd always been nice, but he'd still turned her down. There were only two reasons she could come up with for this: either he wasn't interested in her beyond the confines of the bar, or he already had someone to do those things with. If either of those were the case, she could accept that. She wouldn't like it, and she'd still keep coming to the Burrow, but she could accept that. The answer Elias did give, though, was neither of these. Instead of feeling like some sort of sad resolution, it actually sparked a little anger inside of her. If she were walking on her own two feet, she would have stopped walking and told him how ridiculous that was. As it was, she had no power over her own speed of walking and she didn't want him to drop her. Instead, she had to be a little careful. "That's the worst excuse I've ever heard, Elias," she said. She would have included his last name there, if she'd known it. "Nobody knows or gets to make decisions on what I deserve but me. I think I've earned the right to do that. Now, if you're not into me or you've got another girl, I get that. But I want you, so you're going to need to give me a better reason of why you don't want me." Okay, so maybe that wasn't careful, but she got caught up in it. She was probably burning more bridges than she was building with her words, but she wasn't going to take them back either. Eli hadn't expected her to say the words she said. When she called him out, his first reaction was to laugh a little. Pressing his lips together and pulling them tight, he forced himself to stop laughing. Sometimes he did that, laughed when he was nervous or caught off guard. It wasn't necessarily that found the situation or what the person said funny, but more like an automatic response that he had no control over. He thought perhaps she'd accept it, as she accepted every time he said no when she asked him to go out somewhere. Maybe it was harmless, maybe they could be friends. But Eli knew better. Aria was too beautiful, too easy to talk to. There was no possible way a platonic friendship could happen between them. "You're right, you're absolutely right. You should make that decision for yourself," he agreed with her. "When you asked me out that first time, well, that was the first time anyone has actually asked me out. The thing is, I think you want something from me that I just can't give you. I'm a one night stand kind of guy, I don't do relationships." Eli had purposely avoided her statement about having another girl. He didn't have another girl. There was Lia, he liked her a lot. But their relationship was complicated. He couldn't claim her and as far as he knew, she felt absolutely nothing for him. He knew there was something seriously wrong with him. Aside from trying to keep him and Emilia safe, there was no reason that he didn't want Aria because he did. But he'd learned from a young age that just because we want something or can have something, doesn't mean we should. WC: 291 TAG: Aria Mercent

Aria hadn't expected the laugh that followed her telling him what a lousy excuse he'd made, and tried not to let it derail what she had to say. For the most part, it didn't, but she didn't know what to expect when she was done. She was just hoping for something better, something to hold on to. It wasn't like he really owed it to her though. He was her bartender on the most basic of levels. She chose to go to him, to chat him up, and he had a job to do. He had to be friendly and keep the patrons happy. But she wanted a reason all the same. She wanted to understand this. He agreed with her, so that was something at least. She listened to the rest of what he had to say, watching the street around them as they walked. "You never asked me if that's what I wanted," she said when he was done. Maybe it was defensive, but it was also true. What was it Aria wanted? Another long term relationship like she'd had with Antony, passionate and perfect in the beginning and then stifling and painful in the end? That sounded awful. She'd had other relationships too, most of them significantly shorter, and did she want Elias to pass through her life like that too? No. She didn't want him to dedicate himself to her if it only meant they'd have to leave each other down the line. She just wanted more of him, of her oasis, and she wasn't as choosy as he thought she was with the how. "Right at the next street. I'm the fourth house on the right," she said, remembering to direct him. They'd been walking for so long, but it still seemed like her house had come up too fast. There were still plenty of things to say. "I just got out of a really long relationship not so long ago, and I'm not ready to go back to that again. I'm not looking for Mr. Forever, and I don't want some guy to make me a bunch of promises. I just want more with you than conversations in a crowded bar. I want more of this." She gestured generally between them with one hand, but of course that didn't cover anything. "I don't mean more of you having to carry me home after some guy tries to force himself on me, but I mean more of just you and me, whatever that means. I don't want anything more than you want to give. Do you want me, Eli?" The question was direct now, not one he could skirt around. He was good at dancing around what he didn't want to answer, but she wanted to know that much, at least. WC: 466 Tag: Elias R. Jagger

Before he knew it, they were only a few houses down from her house. The walk seemed to go by a lot faster the more they talked. And the more they talked, the more he got to know her on a deeper level. Not just facts about her, but her as a person. The way she behaved and reacted to everything he said and did. He had been right when he thought that someone had hurt her. The person she had the long relationship with, he must have hurt her so much that she was the way she was. He knew the loneliness, he knew the desperation to just have a conversation with someone. It was true that he felt something very physical for her, but for the first time in a long time, he was able to enjoy a conversation with someone. A real conversation where they talked about things that mattered and didn't try to hide (most) things. Eli thought about her question. Did he want her? He wanted to touch her, to touch the parts of his skin that he wasn't already touching. They passed by a house. He wanted to kiss her, gentle and slow. Another house. He wanted to talk to her, to tell her things he believed in. Another house. He wanted to listen to her, to her life, to her thoughts. Eli stopped at the fourth house on the street. He gently let her down, but kept one hand on her back to make sure she was balanced and wouldn't fall over. He looked at the house and then down at her and smiled. "There's a restaurant in the upper east, Emerald's, they have the best chicken parmigiana. I'd like to take you out on a date there. Tomorrow night," he said. He wondered if that was an answer enough for her. She'd surprised him, but what she did to him surprised him even more. She made him open up, called him out, and forced him to be honest. He was amazed by this woman that stood in front of him. WC: 349 TAG: Aria Mercent

The silence that followed Aria's question felt too long, and she felt her spirits sink. She looked away from him at the houses they were passing, all familiar. Aria had lived here all her life, although at some points during the war, the family had to clutch to the house to keep it. Many of the neighbors remained the same, although the Mercents were never really close with any of them. She tried to think about those neighbors, what they might be doing, as Elias walked her to her house. Most of them couldn't be trusted to know the families that the Mercents had housed over the years, and many of them were exactly the kind of people Aria found she couldn't stand being with anymore. To many of them, the war was just a bad day they could forget about. The pair of them stopped in front of her own house, and she felt herself being lowered back to the ground. She was sure at this point that it had been a mistake to say anything, that it would only make her next trip to the bar uncomfortable. Should she still go there after tonight? But if not there, where? She still spent plenty of mindless nights with her mother, doing little, but they didn't satisfy her for long. She wasn't a homebody like her mother. Well, screw that. She would still go back, and she would make things fine, one way or the other. She straightened her dress with one hand while still carrying her shoes in the other, looking down at herself when Elias finally said something. Even such a direct question as the one she had asked didn't get a direct answer from Elias. Should she have expected any different? She looked back up at him as he, for once, was asking her out. It wasn't a solid yes or a solid no to her question, but it wasn't nothing either. She smiled softly, for the briefest moment considering saying no but knowing that she couldn't. He wasn't easy to get to know, to get answers from - but if he was, would she be as interested? If he laid himself out plain like she did from the beginning, would he have drawn her to him so much? Probably not. But what she had learned only made her want to learn more. Resting her hands on his shoulders to steady herself a bit, Aria raised herself up to kiss his cheek. She stayed at that height for a moment, looking up at him with her face close to his as she answered. "Thank you for tonight, Eli," she said, then lowered herself back down and let go of him. She smiled and turned, making the final few awkward steps to her front door. She wished it could have been a graceful walk, but stepping on broken glass tonight had had more perks than drawbacks. She unlocked the door and reached for the handle before looking back to him. "You know where I live," she said with a smile, the only answer she was going to give even though inside she wanted to grin and just say yes. Then, she turned to open her door and stepped inside. Eli's cheeks felt cool where she'd kissed him. He watched her walk up to her door, was she going to leave him hanging after everything? He wasn't sure, but he wouldn't put it past her. And then she turned around and proved to him that he wasn't that kind of girl. But she did catch up to his ways of non-answers. He laughed slightly and nodded, watching as the door closed. Eli took one last look at the house, and then walked back down the street. He tried to walk slowly, to think about the words they'd exchanged, to think about the way her voice sounded and the way her skin felt. But all too soon, he was back in the upper east and taking the elevator to his apartment. Thank goodness Emilia was asleep because he wasn't sure how he was going to explain the incredible grin on his face that he couldn't seem to wipe off. He picked her up from the couch, her body feeling heavier each day, and laid her on her bed. She was getting so big, and her 9th birthday was coming up. He sat on her bed, pulling the blanket up to her shoulders and looked at her. She had dark blonde hair and angled features, just like her mother. And when she slept, her brows closed it together and she pouted as if she were thinking hard about something. He wondered when that would stop, when her dreams would turn to dreams and stop being nightmares. Eli went to bed. Aria had changed something in him. He didn't know what it was quiet yet, but he knew there was something different. Things had to change. He and Emilia couldn't keep living like this. And if he liked Aria as much as he felt he did, she would need to be a part of his life. He couldn't keep her separate, and she'd fight him even if he tried. Yes, something was changing.
