Eli caught the pillow with ease and gave her a look like he couldn't believe she actually just threw a pillow at him. She was unbelievable. A pillow. He threw the pillow on the seat he had been sitting on. Lia really didn't understand the situation and he didn't feel like explaining it all to her. Perhaps that's just how it was in District 1. Every district had known war, but he knew some districts had it a lot worse off than others. Was District 1 so blinded by it all that they'd become naive? Eli wouldn't doubt it based on the way Lia was acting. "You don't care?" he asked blankly. Eli shrugged. "Maybe that's the problem then. Is that you don't care. You don't care so much that you're actually being selfish about this." He couldn't how immature she was being. He'd never met anyone so self-centered before and it infuriated him. Her glare only made him even more mad and he had no idea why she had this affect on him. Eli threw his arms up in the air as if in surrender, "I don't know! Okay? CLEARLY, I shouldn't care about you. So fine. I don't care! There, are you happy? I. Don't. Care." Eli huffed and ran his hands over his face. What the hell was this woman doing to him? He was so confused and irate at the same time he had no idea what was going on anymore. "Here's me, not caring," he said taking his jacket from the seat and putting it on. Eli had enough of this. Why had he even come here in the first place? She was clearly out of her mind and he'd only been trying to help her. Emilia wanted to thank her, but he wasn't sure if she even deserved it now with the way she was acting. Eli couldn't think straight, but the only thing he knew was that Lia was driving him crazy. Lia had to stop for a moment, shaking her head to herself as she tried to understand what the hell he'd just said. She looked at him, confused. "How am I being selfish about this? I'm very unselfish thank you very much." She doubted that she'd ever resembled a living question mark as much as she did in that moment. Now she was just lost and beginning to wonder what they were even arguing about. For some reason, everything just stopped making sense then and there. When he began to talk again, Lia's brows rose. His answer wasn't anything like she'd thought it'd be and when he threw her words back at her she couldn't help but burst into laughter. The entire situation was just hilarious and for some reason, everything from pain to grief and whatever there was in between turned into laughter. It was as if everything she'd felt the last two weeks turned into a shit show and all she could do was laugh at it. It took Lia some time to calm down and when she did, an amused grin showed on her face. "What are we even arguing about?" She shook her head, then made an attempt to stand up. Her legs would hold her and with just one functional arm, it wasn't easy to keep herself standing with the couch as support. Lia had to literally swallow down her pride before looking at him. "Help? Please?"

Eli wanted to cover his ears, he didn't want to listen anymore. It was clear that they just were bad with each other. They had been able to tolerate each other at work and Eli had even developed feelings for her. But he knew those feelings shouldn't have happened, even though they made perfect sense. He was always attracted to women like Lia. Those mysterious, damaged women he could never have. The more broken they were, the more he loved them. Maybe there was something inside him that wanted to fix them, that actually wanted to be their hero. Or maybe he just loved the way they tortured him. Snapping up the collar of his jacket, he stared at Lia. "We-" he stopped, his mouth moving up and down, "you're selfish. That's the argument!" He pointed at the coffee cup, "That's my favorite cup by the way, so I'm not leaving without it." He'd seen the cup at the market a few days after they'd moved in to their apartment over a year ago. It reminded him of when he was twelve and sleeping under the stars while traveling with a band of mercenaries. When Lia made an attempt to stand, he moved towards her out of habit. "Don't stand, you need rest," he said with palms up towards her, willing her to sit back on the couch. But when he looked at him and asked for her, he couldn't help but sigh. Defeated, Eli held his arms towards her. "You're the most stubborn person I've ever met," he mumbled under his breath. WC: 264 TAG: Jezelia Lennox

Lia couldn't help but laugh even more when he began to talk about his cup. She was so perplexed by the entire situation that the only thing she found herself doing was laughing. Laughing away all the pain, physical and mental one. But then she had to face reality again, when her physical pain grew too sharp. Lia was a proud person, she'd always been from the very steps she'd taken yet somehow she knew when to admit defeat and ask for help. If you were to ask her, this was not admitting defeat because everything was unclear to begin with. Her grin widened a little when Eli actually did help her. "I think you mean beautiful", she joked, feeling the effects of her painkillers kick in. She felt a little lighter, little less pain, but that also meant her body grew weaker. Her body literally fell into his arms and despite her current state, she wasn't all to slow to react with her healthy arm wrapping around his neck. It was easy to feign that her pain wasn't as bad as it was. That was what she'd been doing for years after all.

Eli watched her moods change, she was like a chameleon, always changing the way she looked on the outside. But he'd observed her far too intricately to know that her inside and her outside were two different things. Some people wear their emotions on their sleeves, always open to how they felt. Lia could be both. It's part of what made her so interesting to him. How sometimes she could be so carefree and then others, so closed off. He stared at her when he helped her up and furrowed his brows, "Why do you do that?" He was used to her flirting with him and he both loved and hated it. Ever since they'd slept together it was like ice and fire with her. And he was never sure which side of her he would get. The fire or the ice, the light or the shadows? He knew she wasn't blind, she had to know how he felt about her. And though he had done this to himself, told himself that it was okay she use him, it still stung. He couldn't blame her. He'd allowed himself to be with her knowing that she didn't feel the same. So ultimately it was his fault for letting her use him. WC: 211 TAG: Jezelia Lennox

With the lack of sleep and the meds, everything felt so much intense than it actually was. When he held her up, all she could think about was how close they were and how hard his abs were. She looked up at him, confused. "Do what?" Lia asked. She was joking, he knew that didn't he? She shook her head a little, wondering what his problem was. He'd never cared about her shameless yet harmless flirting. Unless what Emilia had said was true and it bothered him. Lia took a step back from him, a frown on her face. She didn't want to ask but felt like she had to. If she did and his answer confirmed what she thought, then what? She'd lose him as a friend and everything would change. She could just keep quiet and ignore it all but then it would just gnaw at her. It took her a moment to realize that things were changing already so what did it matter? She'd never know if she didn't ask, that was for sure. She took a deep breath, her eyes meeting his. "Emilia thinks you like me... Is it true? If it is, just tell me because I don't know what to think here." She didn't know how to react either and now that the question was out there was no taking it back. She didn't know what she thought of him or if she had any feelings for him. She just knew that he was her only friend in a very long time and now she could lose him because of her inability to keep things to herself.

Lia's hands were on his arms and his torso. He remembered the night those hands had been on every inch of his body. She was drunk, but he was stone cold sober and he remembered it well as if it had just happened. When she asked what, he turned away from her slightly. She was doing it again, playing things off like it was a joke. Eli wasn't sure why he even cared. The night they'd spent together, sure he cared, but he wanted her just as badly as she wanted him. The problem was, he actually felt something for her. He thought he was okay with it, okay with just letting her use him when she wanted. After all, they were both getting something out of it. But now, he wasn't so sure anymore. He sagged and rubbed his face with his hands, god when did this become such a mess? Yes, it's true. I'm attracted to you. God, attracted is such an understatement. I hardly know anything about you, but every time I see you my heart beats a little faster my blood runs a little thicker and you drive me so f*cking insane it's stupid. You set me ablaze. So yes, it's true. I like you. "You're my friend Lia. Maybe friend is a loose term, but that's all we are and that's all I want us to be," he tried to say it as casually as he could, tethering all of his emotions and feelings inside him. Eli had no idea what possessed him to say those words. He had wanted her to know, was sure that she actually already knew. Maybe deep down she knew how he felt about her. But if she couldn't see it or was willing to accept it, he couldn't say it either. He built the wall back up around his heart. It was better this way. WC: 317 TAG: Jezelia Lennox

Lia watched him attentively. She wanted to believe his words so badly, yet his body spoke of something else. She could see that he was lying and for some reason, hearing him say that they were just friends was like a punch to her stomach. It angered her to the point of no return that she even felt that way but wasn't that what always happened? You don't know what you have until you don't and before his answer, the possibility had at least been there, that maybe, just maybe he cared for her more? Hearing him say that he didn't... It hurt. It hurt and she hated to admit it to herself but there had been some small part of her that wanted it to be true. That maybe, she did want him to be more than a friend. The confusion that set in was too much for her to handle. She didn't know anything but somehow she felt everything. Lia shook her head. "You're lying", she said, her eyes meeting his. For the first time in what seemed to be a really long time, she let her mask drop and everything she felt finally showed. Had he told her truth, she would've backed away as quickly as possible. It was the lying and the pain that came with it that made her realize what she wanted. She didn't know what else to do or say, she just knew that he couldn't be telling the truth. She didn't want it to be true. To think that she was just about anyone to him, not when she finally realized what she'd been ignoring for so long. Lia took a small step forward, closing the distance between them. Her hand went to his cheek, just holding it there while her eyes met his. "Look me in the eye and tell me you don't feel anything." For the first time in a long time, she sounded nervous. She was absolutely terrified, knowing that his next words could either make or break her. She truly hoped it wouldn't be the latter. It couldn't be.

What if he kissed her? What if he just admitted that he did feel something for her? He could do it so easily. Her voice, her body was closing in around him and he felt the mixture of their heat electrifying the air. Maybe it was fear that was holding him back from just taking her into his arms and kissing her. He could do it. He wasn't one for asking for permission. But something held him back. Fear. The unknown. What could it hurt if he just laid his heart out on the line? Eli was tired of being lonely. He wanted someone, he wanted Lia. He wanted to share his life with her, maybe not in a marriage kind of sense, but he wanted to wake up next to her one morning instead of just leaving before dawn like he did the first time. But the tiredness of the loneliness that plagued him and the fear of being lonely forever wasn't enough. He could have that with anyone. He didn't want just anyone though. Lia was there and she'd somehow burrowed in his heart. The warmth of her hand against his face calmed him, slowed down his heart. His eyes moved slowly to look at hers. He saw it, for a split second. Their hearts were beating the same beat and he knew. He needed her like he needed water, like he needed air. Like he needed the fire that set him ablaze. "Lia," he said softly, feeling his body melt, both his hands reaching to either side of her face. Fire. His mind traced back. Eve's face appeared in his mind like a ghost that haunted him. The fire was about to engulf the entire building and there he was, holding Eve's already lifeless body in his arms. Emilia sat crying beside them, her hand holding her mother's. His heart broke into a million pieces like splintered wood that would be impossible to piece back together. When the fire around them burned, his heart burned with it. The possibilities of everything their lives could be crumbled beneath him as the earth shook and broke the futures that could have been, and the fire swallowed Eve whole. His body turned cold, his eyes as still as stone. "I don't feel anything," he said and dropped his arms. WC: 388 TAG: Jezelia Lennox

Lia had never felt as cold as she did when he dropped his arms. It was as if she went back three years in time, back to when only darkness and coldness existed. When she was the only one existing in the world and everything else being a blur. It felt like the floor under her was pulled away and she was just there, floating with nothing to keep her grounded. She wanted to hate him for doing this to her. For making her think that there was something, for putting her heart on her sleeve only to get nothing back. But she couldn't. Because she didn't believe him. It hurt and it broke her heart but for some reason she just couldn't believe him. It didn't stop her tears from rolling down her cheeks though or the step that she took backwards. "I don't believe you", Lia started and wiped at her tears. "I think you're lying because you're scared. You're scared because your past is holding you back, isn't it? I'm scared too. I'm absolutely terrified and up until a few moments ago I didn't know what I felt but I know now." Lia was full on crying now, tears flowing down her cheeks. The saltiness from her tears made it all so much worse, so much more real but there was no going back now. She shook her head, more to herself than to him. "We're all f*cked up from the war. I lost my entire family when I was 15 and that was it. I told myself that I'd distance myself from everyone because it was easier than to get attached and then lose that someone. So I get it. I get what you're feeling." Never, in the past three years had she thought that she could be this open. It was liberating and scary and whatever happened next, she somehow felt proud of herself. Yes, maybe he'd leave and she'd lose him but then she could still be proud of the fact that she was honest and that was all she could do. Lia took a deep breath before looking at him, for what might be the last time. "If you want to leave, then leave. I can't force you to stay. But just know that I get what you're going through and you're not the only one that's scared. Scared to lose someone again. Scared to be lonely. Scared to love." Lia felt her heart snap the moment she stopped talking. There she was. Fully exposed with nothing to fall back on. No part of her that could ignore what was happening and nothing to shield her from the pain that would come. It was all out for him to see and it terrified her. He terrified her.

Life had never been what Eli thought it would be. From a small age, he realized that life had crooked turns and broken trees blocking his paths. Life wasn't fair and he'd accepted that when he left home all those years ago. Life wasn't fair when he killed for the first time as a child assassin and mercenary. Life was simple and horrible at the same time. Kill someone and he gets to eat that day. He wasn't a straight arrow and each of his choices lead him deeper and farther from the straight arrow path. Choices were choices and there was no such things as a right choice or a wrong choice. And now Eli was faced with another choice that he knew could shape his life in one of the largest ways possible. He'd made a choice just like this nine years ago. Her words made him flinch. War and pain and loneliness and love. His mind was a battlefield, filled with canons and fire and gunshots. He closed his eyes, tuning it all out. Tuning out the choices she wanted him to make, tuning out the choices he made before. Tuning out his past, his present, and the fears he had for the future. When he opened his eyes, Lia was still standing there. Her face was stained with tears and she'd given him what he wanted all those nights ago. Just like then, he knew he couldn't have her. She was too far from his grasp even if she stood right in front of him, asking him to tell her what she already knew. He couldn't give her everything she wanted because he wasn't whole anymore. Pieces of him belonged to so many people that it would be impossible to truly have everything he wanted to give himself fully to someone. Eli's hands cupped her face once more as he stepped forward, his body pressing lightly against hers, and he leaned down until his lips met with hers. He tasted her soft lips and salty tears with the impassioned kiss, his mind cleared with the wildfire that ignite inside himself. He was intoxicated in her scent and taste as he pulled her closer. Withdrawing from her quickly, smoothly, he wiped a tear from her face. "Good bye, Lia." Eli moved across the living room and to the door. Choices and consequences and fairness and life. He opened the door and shut it behind him, not allowing himself to stop once the door was shut. He couldn't stop, he couldn't turn back, he couldn't look back. He had to stop it before it began. The fire that consumed Eve. That consumed Eli. WC: 446 TAG: Jezelia Lennox

Lia knew. She knew that he would leave yet she kept hoping that maybe he wouldn't. Maybe he'd stay and maybe she'd feel whole again. Maybe she'd find it in herself to be happy again and to love and... His hands cupped around her face and the world stopped moving. Her eyes shut and his touch was the only thing that existed. His touch and then his lips. She'd remember that touch and that kiss forever because it meant goodbye. A goodbye to all the hopes she had for a fuller, richer and happier life. Seconds that seemed to last an hour and everything, to the smallest detail like his calloused index finger on his right hand was imprinted in her brain now. Like a burn that would never go away. A nightmare that would play on repeat until there was nothing left of her but the feeling of hollowness. Just like that, it was over. Her bubble burst and so did she. His hand wiping away her tears, his words... Lia felt her insides snap and shatter into a million pieces and this time she couldn't pick up the pieces. Her eyes remained shut until she heard the door close and as it did, her legs caved in. She fell to the floor, sobbing and hyperventilating. She couldn't breathe, couldn't think. He was gone and it broke her in so many ways, ways she'd never thought were possible. She blamed herself. Maybe, she should have told him sooner and things could've worked out if he'd known earlier. Maybe, she should have been more open. Maybe then things would have been different. Yet there she was, shattered into pieces, alone. Maybe that was her fate. Maybe, the universe wanted her to be alone and unlovable. Maybe, she didn't deserve to have someone ever again. Maybe, her family died because they were better off without her. Because she was broken and undesirable. She was Jezelia Lennox, the broken one. Lia didn't know when her tears stopped and an unsettling calm set in. Before she knew it she was moving towards the bedroom and the drawer next to her bed. She pulled out the gun she had and pulled back the safety on it. Lia had never been suicidal, not even after her family died but this time things were different. It was as if all the wires in her brain had shut down, making her think things that were as far from the truth as possible. She truly found herself believing that every tragedy, every misstep in her life, was her fault. Her family's death was her fault. Levi getting hurt and abandoned was her fault. Everything was her fault and there was no hope left for her. She wasn't supposed to love and get loved in return. She wasn't supposed to be happy. She wasn't supposed to be alive. The end of the gun pointed at her heart. Lia inhaled, exhaled and then she pulled the trigger. WC: 497 Tags: Elias R. Jagger

Eli gathered up everything inside him to push his legs to keep walking. Down the stairs, out the door of the building, down the street corner, and past another street. Everything and everyone was a blur. The heat of the fire from his memories licked against his skin, Emilia's screams loud inside his mind. Everything was crumbling around him. The fire. Eve. Emilia. The fire. Eve. Emilia. The fire. Eve. Emilia. BANG. The sound broke through the cycle in his mind and he stopped. People around him stopped, too and they all looked at the same place. The building a few streets down. Lia's building? He didn't think, his body said jump and he jumped. His body lead the way back to Lia'd building, pushing people to the side as he ran quickly. Eli lost track of everything, not even thinking of the worst possible things the sound meant. He knew that sound though. He'd heard it a million times. Eli threw Lia's door open and ran inside. Lia wasn't where he'd left her. He ran to the nearest room and saw her lying on the floor, a gun beside her. Eli froze. He was too late. Just like he'd been too late with Eve. His body felt like it was made of stone, unable to move, unable to walk towards her. "Lia." The shock still hadn't worn off, but he could speak now. His breath caught in his throat. Then he walked towards her. He looked down and crouched beside her. Eve had a pool of blood around her, her stomach drenched in it. When Eli looked at Lia, there was nothing. No blood. Lia laid on the floor, unable to move. Something, maybe the only sane part in her made her twitch her hand at the very last moment. She'd shot herself alright, but it was her arm who took the bullet, not her heart. Three words were on repeat inside her head. I am broken. There was nothing else but that one sentence. Everything she'd felt, everything she'd thought about, it was as if she'd pressed a mute button and all those thoughts faded away. She was a shell, an empty shell with just a shred of her older self there and that shred was there to tell her that she was broken. She wasn't crying anymore. She was just there, staring at the floor. She didn't react when Elias stormed in. She couldn't. Her body might have been in the room but Lia was gone. She'd found that dark corner in her mind, her own prison and there was no way for her to get out. She was trapped, gone to the world but still a part of it somehow. It took Eli's voice for her subconscious to trigger every bad memory she had. There was no track of time, no coherence to the memories, nothing. There was just the pain and agony that they'd brought her, on repeat. Her mind had always been her worst enemy and now it was torturing her. It had her trapped and there was no way for her to escape it. Her clothes had soaked up the initial blood from her arm and it wasn't until now that it began to pool around her. Lia was numb to the pain and the world. She might not have succeeded in killing herself, but she was dead anyways. Dead to the world and herself. WC: 297 Tags: Elias R. Jagger

Eli crouched down next to her, his eyes scanning her body, focusing on her chest for breathing. He moved closer to put his ear over her mouth. She was breathing. He watched the rise and fall of her chest. He picked up the gun and moved it to the far side of the room by the chair. Then he sat next to her and dropped his head to his hands. This was a mess. Everything was awful and maybe he'd done this, but he felt his hands were tied. No matter what he did, someone would get hurt. He took a moment and rubbed his face with his hands, then slicked his hair back. Eli slid his arms under Lia's body and picked her up. He moved closer to the bed and then set her down gently on it. Eli walked out of the room and found a basin, filled it up with warm water, and then took a wash cloth. He pulled a chair to the bed and set the basin down on the night stand. "Lia," he said to her. He knew she was alive. Whatever possessed her to take a gun, he didn't know. There were so many times he wanted it all to end, but never in his life had he ever tried to kill himself. Eli picked up the cloth and dipped it in the warm water. He tried to wash off whatever grime and blood was left on the parts of her skin that were exposed. The movements of wiping away, dipping into the water, wiping away, and dipping into the water over and over again calmed his mind, but he was just as confused and conflicted as ever. After he finished, he looked at her. She still had not said a word. Eli dropped the cloth into the basin and put his face into his hands. He took a few deep breaths and then called on a doctor. He had no idea what to do and as much as he wanted to help her, he couldn't. He knew that what she did probably had something to do with him, but it was more than that. It had to be. No person would just try to end their life because of someone, especially not over him. There was a deeper issue to it and Eli was not qualified for this, any of it. He walked out of the room and waited for the doctor in the living room, tidying up the best the apartment the best he could. When the doctor came, she went straight to Lia to examine her. Then the doctor asked what happened. Eli told her the truth, as best as he could, without giving too much of their personal details away. The doctor tried to talk to Lia, but there was no response. "Your girlfriend--" Eli stopped her and was about to tell the Doctor they weren't together, but the doctor put her hand up to stop him. "Whoever she is to you-- she's in shock. I suggest you take her to the hospital where she can get round the clock care." "Will they fix her there?" "Fix?" the doctor smiled sadly, "It's up to her. All we can do is monitor her, whether she pulls out of this or not is up to her." "So, there's nothing you can do?" The Doctor sighed and shook her head, "We have a psychologist. He can speak with her, even if she doesn't talk back, she'll hear him. Maybe." Eli looked back in the bedroom at Lia, then at the doctor. He thanked her for coming and that he'd call her later to figure things out. Right now, he needed time to think. Once the doctor left, he went back to Lia and sat beside her. He didn't say anything for a while, just let his thoughts wander. "I'll be back later." WC: 654 TAG: Jezelia Lennox
