Sloan Ios
NICKNAMES: Sloan AGE: 19 GENDER: Male RESIDENCE: District 4 OCCUPATION: Sailor/fisherman SPECIAL INFO: N/A PLAYER ALIAS: Erin
When Sloan was born, it was to a distraught mother and no father. At the age of 16, his mother, Sarah, was too young and too upset to care for a baby. Perhaps for the better, she recognized that a child was not something she could handle. Thus, Sloan was passed on to his less than pleased aunt, Kim, already with older children. He grew up as the nephew who represented another mouth to feed, another back to clothe, another responsibility to be had. Kim never hid her disdain for Sloan or the circumstances for his presence, often complaining of Sarah and her decisions.
It was no surprise that Sloan grew up loathing his status as a complication. He felt like a hinderance to the lives of others. It was a terrible feeling, one that easily built bitter resentment. Since he was a child, Sloan angrily jerked any responsibility he would impose on others away. Whether it was trying his shoes, cooking his food, or even finding money, Sloan forced himself to fill the role so that he would never have to listen to Kim complain again. The older Sloan was, the more time he spent away from home. Around the age of 14, he found work with on a trawler in exchange for a place in the creaky attic above the captain's house and a meal on the table at dinner.
During this time, Sloan refused to care about the rebellion. As he saw it, he struggled. Others, he thought, should be able to cope just as he had. Sure, it wasn't fun, but it was the way. In his opinion, the rebels only complicated matters. Had they stayed down and stayed quiet, firebombs wouldn't have fallen on District 13, killing all the citizens. District 4 understood this more than other Districts, generally speaking. Of course, not everyone followed the same path. Those who rose up quickly found their graves. Among them were Kim and her family.
After her death, Kim's circumstances became known. The whole thing had been an act. She wanted Sloan to hate her, for if he didn't, she worried he'd run to his mother. Sarah had not, in fact, given Sloan up. She was a reckless woman, apparently neglectful and full of spite. Kim fought her for the custody of Sloan, finally winning. Kim assumed that Sloan would find a much better life without his mother.
So, for the single person who cared for Sloan, he spent his whole life in what he thought to be a state of mutual hatred. Now, it was too late to know that love.
Sloan felt stuck in a pit of terrible apathy. He hated the Capitol, of course, for killing the rebels and imposing the Games. What they had done was wrong. Ultimately, though, Sloan was just a poor fisherman with nothing but a sad story, unable to truly change anything. As the rebellion was put down, he slowly built up his way of healing: under a thick cover of bad habits, angst, and introversion. After the war, he now lives just like that: day by day, always covered by the shadow of his past.
