When Alec's mother danced, she told him that she felt the music. He could see that in her as he watched with eyes wide as she made her art in front of him. Alec's mother told him she loved to dance, and he truly believed she did. She loved other things more, though, and after a while, dancing was a memory of her past, a story to be told at dinner. Meanwhile, Alec knew her art had completely taken his heart for the rest of his life. He'd dance and dance and dance for as long as he was able, until his body no longer moved for him. Alec woke up at 5 each morning to run through the paths between the fields of wheat and rye planted behind his home. He'd run until 6:30, eat, then begin his time working in the fields, music in his head the whole time. After he finished, Alec stretched and bent and got himself ready to dance. He designed dances to songs he'd never heard before, hearing them only in his mind while he danced. Alec wasn't a slave to his art as others sometimes called him. Most of the time, he felt like he was the art. He didn't think as he moved, just turned off his thoughts and gave way to instinct, letting the music flow through his body and letting his body become the music. Kira told him that Oliver only loved the people that were a part of his art. That horrified Alec. After his first meeting with Oliver, he felt a drive to find room in his life and heart to let him stay. At night, Alec dreamed of the time between two musicals. It always went something like this: the two in a little place of their own, sharing a life together. Alec couldn't believe they had only known each other for a few months. Their first time together had been a little over a month ago. Even though neither Alec nor Oliver had made anything official by giving what they had a title, Alec knew it was there. He loved Oliver and had loved him for some time now. He hadn't said it yet, of course, for fear of being "too early" or scaring him away. How could he explain to Oliver what he felt? It wasn't just the sex or the musical and their passions. It was his personality. Alec felt like he was truly alive when he was with Oliver, like any second he spent before knowing him was one wasted. Despite feeling all of this, the pair hadn't even been on a real date, and Alec sought to change that. There were, of course, the nights they went to a club and drank terribly and then went back to Oliver's room. They were fun, of course, more fun than Alec ever had before, but he was curious about what a more romantic setting might look like with Oliver, about how he might respond. Alec wouldn't be able to shake Kira's words until then. That same night, Alec contacted his sister and pulled a few favors for the next night. After auditions, while Oliver and Alec were still dressed up, Alec grabbed Oliver's hand as they walked backstage. "C'mon, I have a surprise for you," Alec told him, beaming. Alec carefully worked to sneak the two out of the studio. Technically, they were supposed to stay back and work longer, but the rules weren't terribly tight. They had the freedom for this, at least, but it felt fun to sneak around. Once out of the building and into the actual District, Alec led Oliver down the road, toward the nearest farm to the city's center: his sister's. There, in the back corner of the wheat fields, was a lush green hill overlooking the golden acres. It was only at the top of the hill that the view revealed itself. It was beautiful to Alec, and he couldn't wait to share it with Oliver. Words: mobile Tags: Oliver A. Bennett

Oliver's life was like pieces of a puzzle, slowly coming together and connecting in all the right places. First the musical was approved and sponsored, then Alec came alone, and then the rest of the cast. It had only been less than two months, but he'd gotten close to some of them and had even begun to count them as part of his family. His sister always had a place in his heart, but this was different. This was a family that he wan't born in to. This was a family he had made, stitched together by music and dance and love and passion. After the audition in District 9, which he knew Alec came from, he looked out at the stage. Everyone was packing up what they had prepared that morning. They would stay in District 9 for another night, something Oliver had decided on just a week ago. The way Alec talked about 9, it was like love. He couldn't wait to see it. Each district was different and though living in The Capitol had some amazing perks, he saw some beauty in a lot of the other Districts. He stood at the stage, watching everyone, a smile on his face. Yes, they were his family. Alec pulled on his arm, catching Oliver off guard. The look on his face was that of pure joy and Oliver couldn't help but humor him and just follow. A surprise, this would be interesting. Oliver had on dress shoes, dress pants, a button up shirt with sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He looked and felt completely out of place as they walked. The ground beneath them was soft and grassy, so unlike The Capitol. It was perhaps the longest he'd walked on grass his entire life. Finally, Alec lead him up the top of the hill. Oliver's legs were to the point of shaking when he finally stopped and looked out over the hill. A wide smile formed on Oliver's face as he took in the breathtaking view. Then he looked at Alec. Hands moving up to cup Alec's face, he kissed him fully, deeply. "Ugh," he moaned, "I adore you." WC: 362 TAG: Alec Penber

Alec worried that Oliver would hate District 9. He was from the Capitol, after all, full of bright lights and bright people. District 9 was quiet. It was quaint. But it was home, and Alec loved it dearly. He wanted to share that love of his with Oliver. After all, Oliver understood pretty much anything else Alec told him, so he hoped this would be no different. Though he saw Oliver struggle, the hill was an easy feat for him. As a dancer, Alec had superb cardio. But he’d climbed this hill plenty of times, ever since his sister moved to this farm with her husband. Sarah was 24. She married at 19 and had her first child with her husband at 21. Alec’s niece, Cara, was three years old now. As Alec had just found out, too, Sarah was newly pregnant with her second baby. One or twice, he envied her life. Alec wanted stability. He wanted a spouse and a child and a perfect house, a perfect life, just like she had. He was happy, of course, but there was always that longing. Though he’d never admit it, Alec slowly began to feel Oliver fulfilling that urge. Standing here, showing Oliver his world, it made Alec’s heart feel so full. He returned the kiss, sliding his arm around Oliver’s back. Once the two parted, he turned back out to look over the field. Oliver’s affirmation sounded so good. He adored Alec. Neither had said the L word - not yet at least - and Alec wondered if Oliver was purposely avoiding it. ”Mm,” Alec hummed, still happy. ”Seems like my efforts were worth it after all, huh?” He turned, taking a few steps along the hill, guiding Oliver along with him. Just as Sarah had promised, a basket of food was sitting on the wooden bench. Alec grinned over at Oliver. ”Ah, and there’s the rest of it.” For a moment, he withdrew his hand and sat down on the bench, placing the basket on his lap as he opened the top and looked through the food. Thankfully, Sarah had always been a phenomenal cook. ”I thought some dinner might be nice,” Alec said, leaning the basket towards Oliver so he could see inside. ”I know this is far from Capitol fine dining, but it’s the closest I could manage.”Words: 409 Tags: Oliver A. There was something about where they were that just felt like home. Oliver had always lived in The Capitol and as much as he loved the parties and the gatherings, being here with Alec felt more like home that The Capitol ever did. He would trade the glitz and the glamour for a life in District 9 if he could. But then he thought about the musical, about his dream. He'd wanted this since he was a little kid. Could he really leave all of that behind before he even got truly started? He looked at Alec and smiled, the good thing was that he didn't have to. Alec was there beside him and if he could have it his way, he'd have Alec beside him for the rest of his life. Oliver followed him to the bench with a picnic basket filled with food. He laughed as he peeked inside the basket. "You've been by my side all day, when did you have a chance to cook and put all of this together?" he asked. The aroma of the food made his stomach rumble loudly, causing him to laugh a little more. "It smells delicious. Our avox always cooked our food and even though I'm pretty sure she hated my parents, she was always a little nicer to me. On my birthday she'd cook peasant stew, just for me because it's my favorite. Carrots, potatoes, and a lot of herbs I can't even remember now. She was from District 9, if I recall properly," he said as he remembered something from his childhood. He liked to tell Alec about his childhood, even if a lot of it wasn't good. Alec smiled at Oliver’s observation. ”By your side all day -yes. My favorite place to be, actually,” he said, his smile widening. It was stupid how in love he was with Oliver. ”I’m not the only one from 9, you know,” he said, chuckling a little. Alec gestured in the direction of the house sitting at the end of the wheat fields. ”That’s my sister’s home,” he told Oliver. ”I called in a favor.”Alec listened closely as Oliver spoke about his home. Learning about him was so fascinating. Even though the concept of an Avox felt strange and a little wrong, Alec appreciated the information. ”Sounds like home,” Alec affirmed as he unloaded the food. ”My sister’s always been this phenomenal cook, ever since she was really young. I can’t actually remember a time when she didn’t cook for the family. It was so sad when she moved out - no one in the whole house knew how to cook. When I moved out a few years later, I had to learn from her.” Those were fond memories, ones that made Alec feel warm and happy. He loved his family, loved his childhood. That was one of the most distinct differences between him and Oliver. Where Oliver had a poor childhood and past, Alec felt at home in his. He just wanted to share that with Oliver. ”Well, dinner’s served,” he said, smiling up at Oliver as he finished sitting out the food. Words: 267 Tags: Oliver A. Bennett

"It's where I always want you to be," Oliver said with a smile. Looking over the wheat fields where Alec had pointed to, he saw the house. He'd seen it earlier but just thought it was some house that belonged to some random person neither of them knew. It was odd to actually be part of the world and participate in it rather than just see pictures of it. He looked at Alec, studying the details of his face, the way that line between his mouth and nose deepened when he was lost in thought. The way nose perked just so perfectly. He was so natural and undoctored unlike some of the people in The Capitol that had cosmetic surgeries to make themselves look better. Alec wasn't like that. Alec was handsome in the most natural way possible, he was created just like this. Perfect. "If the food tastes as good as it smells, then I'll believe it. I hope that also means that you know how to cook, because I have no idea how. And between you and me, we'd probably starve or eat at restaurants for the rest of our lives," he teased him. Oliver began to eat and moaned, "this... this might be better than sex. I'm sorry." Oliver shrugged and grinned. "I might just ask your sister to marry me now." WC: 226 TAG: Alec Penber

Alec smiled and watched Oliver take a bite, hoping that he would appreciate the food and that it might measure up to what he was used to from his home. Alec grinned at his response. ”I was going to say that I thought that sound was pretty familiar, but, uh, I guess that means that it’s in my best interest to get better at both cooking and sex to keep you happy.”Just as he started to take a bite of his food, Alec heard a female voice from behind him. ”I’m open to it if you are,”. Alec spun around at the sound - Sarah. Her light brown hair fell in soft waves on both sides of her face, but her kind yet mischievous eyes the center of anyone’s attention. Though he did love his sister and like to see her, he requested privacy. It wasn’t that he was planning on seducing Oliver with her food, but more that he wanted the time alone for the first official date. ”Sarah, what are you doing up here?” Alec asked, turning around. ”Well, you all came a little earlier than I planned and I forgot to put this pie out with your food.” Sarah wasn’t looking at him, though, but instead she was looking at Oliver, the biggest, worst grin across her face. Alec was going to have to kill her. He looked over at Oliver for a second, smiling apologetically while his face flushed red. ”I’ll be right back. I forgot that I have to speak to Sarah about… the harvest.” He stood quickly and walked a few paces back into the trees, knowing she’d follow. Before he could open his mouth, she did. ”Holy shit, Alec. Is that the ‘special someone’?” Alec sighed heavily and opened his mouth to explain. As far as he knew, she had no idea that he was interested in anything but women. ”Listen, I’m absolutely not judging. He’s beautiful. He also looks like he has a beautiful wallet, like he’s definitely not from one of these Districts.” She paused for only second to gasp. ”Oh, my god, Alec. Is… is he your sugar daddy? Does he need another sugar baby?”Alec groaned. ”Jesus, Sarah. You’re married with one child and currently pregnant, why would you want a sugar daddy?” She grinned, smacking her hand on her leg. ”So I was right! He is your s-“”No, that’s not it at all. We’re together. He’s the director of the musical and we just… clicked. But he's definitely going to hear us being children back here, and I absolutely do not want to mess this up, okay?" Alec took a few steps back towards the bench and out of the woods. "It's our first date, so please try to be civil, okay?"Words: 487 Tags: Oliver A. Bennett

Oliver liked the sound of that, how Alec thought about his happiness. It was a nice feeling that filled him with warmth from the inside out, like a hot cup of cocoa on a winter day. He looked out over the hill, a nice cup of cocoa on top of this hill while it snowed would be much better than in The Capitol. Oliver continued to eat and then heard a woman's voice behind them. Oliver turned, a surprised look on his face when he realized what she'd just said. Then he couldn't help but smile when Alec spoke to her, clearly they knew each other. "Sarah?" Oliver asked but Alec was too preoccupied by her intrusion and the things she was saying. Oliver bit his lip, trying not to smile too much at their conversation. He didn't want to interrupt because it seemed as if they were brother and sister. Oliver and his sister never spoke like this. Not even when they were young. Oliver loved his sister, but he wished they were closer like the way Alec and his sister, Sarah, seemed to be. His sister often tried to block attention from Oliver when their parents tried to scold him for being too flamboyant or into dancing and singing. They didn't like that. So instead, his sister pulled their attention to himself by being the good daughter, the one they could be proud of and brag about. Which caused its own problems. Oliver became the black sheep. He watched as Alec and Sarah walked away, though he still listened to their conversations. He grinned at what they were talking about, what little he could hear at least. He ate slowly, not wanting to be finished with his food while Alec's food remained uneaten and getting colder by the second. "Getting a little lonely over," Oliver said, begging for Alec's attention. Alec smiled warmly and apologetically at Oliver as he returned, taking his seat on the bench beside him. ”Sorry about that,” he said, ”I’m back now and ready to finish this date without an interruption.”Sarah, still standing there, put a hand on her hip and laugh. ”Hear that?” she asked, directing her words twinged with a slight southern accent at Oliver, ”my own brother thinks I’m an interruption. Probably all of you Capitol people corrupting his fine bred manners, don’t you think?” Sarah laughed a little, making it clear her words held no intended rudeness. ”Anyway, sweetie, I’m Sarah and it was absolutely wonderful to meet you. I hope to see you two lovebirds together again soon, okay? I’m gonna go ahead and get out of here before Alec throws me off the hill.” With that, she laughed easily, waved a little, and started on her way back down. Once she was on her way, Alec took a quick bite of his food. ”I really wasn’t expecting her to come. Sarah’s a handful most of the time, but she means well. I’m sorry if you weren’t, you know, ready for that.” As far as Alec understood, meeting the family generally wasn’t something that happened until a relationship became quite serious. After all, Oliver hadn’t even told him that he loved him yet, so was he ready to meet his family, even if it was just Sarah? Alec wasn’t sure, and he felt his stomach twist a little as he awaited Oliver’s response. Words: 281 Tags: Oliver A. Bennett

When Alec came back to sit beside him, Sarah followed. This made Oliver grin and he put the plate down to stand up. “It’s nice to meet you Sarah,” he shook her hand, taking hers in both of his and then kissing. It was an act reserved for a very good friend or even family. But it was something that meant that that person meant a lot to you. Oliver didn’t know her really, but if she was Alec’s family, then… He didn’t have the courage to finish the rest and instead nodded. He said his goodbye to Sarah and waved before sitting beside Alec again. “Nonsense, she’s your sister, Alec,” he said. “My sister, if she didn’t have a stick up her ass all the time, would probably act the same way.” Oliver then laughed, “I’m joking, my sister is nice. Just not as nice as yours. I can tell you two are very close.” He picked up his plate again and took a bite. “Maybe we can even have dinner with her sometime. Maybe not tonight, since we’re already here. But next time we come back when we do our show here. Something planned, perhaps? Nothing Capitol-Formal of course, just a nice dinner. If you want, that is,” Oliver said. He really did like this. All of this. The farm. Alec’s sister. Alec. It was like a life that he perhaps would have dreamed about if he knew these kinds of lives existed. But all he’d known his entire life was The Capitol. WC: 266 TAG: Alec Penber

Alec was extremely relieved by Oliver’s reaction. From his experience, people in the Capitol addressed social situations in a completely different way. In 9, people were much more personal and all-knowing. Everyone knew each other’s business and didn’t care to hide that fact. The Capitol, on the other hand, seemed to be fueled on gossip. People loved to talk, but always about vapid things and while maintaining a sort of distance. He didn’t expect Oliver to take to her well, but there he went, surprising Alec all over again. He smiled warmly when Oliver sat down, feeling his heart beat a little faster in his chest. This man was truly perfect. He listened to Oliver’s explanation and only felt more flattered and happy. ”Sarah’s nothing if not nice. You know how there’s the whole ‘nature versus nurture’ debate about children growing up? Sarah is all the proof the nature side needs. I swear, she came out of the womb offering to cook sick neighbors a casserole.” He shook his head a bit at the thought, taking another bite of food. ”Anyway, I’d still love to meet your sister someday.”When Oliver pitched his idea, Alec beamed and couldn’t contain his happiness. ”What,” he asked, visibly excited, ”are you suggesting like… a family dinner?”Words: 231 Tags: Oliver A.
