Den is the mayor's son, which comes with a lot of responsibilities and not a lot of freedom. From the day he was born, a lot was expected out of him. He had tutors for everything because his father wanted Den to take over as Mayor one day. With the rise of conflict, Den had to start taking defense lessons. The lessons got worse and worse and mostly ended up with Den getting a beating. But he had to grow strong, there was a war coming and his father was the face of the District. He couldn't be weak. He learned everything he was supposed to and even excelled in his studies. After a few years, Den toughened up to the defense lessons. As the war grew closer, his father became even more crazed about it. Always yelling and arguing with everyone about anything and everything, even when no one argued with him. He was stressed beyond measure and sometimes, he'd take it out of Den, his only son. At five years old, Den was smarter than most adults and could fight better than any kid. But he didn't like to fight. He preferred to do other things with his hands, like break down machines and build them back together. Or create new inventions. But this was something his father didn't want for him, so he followed in the path his father had laid out of for him.
Den didn't have many friends. Being the mayor's son could be bad or it could be good. If you were on the side of The Capitol, you wanted to be his friend. But Den mostly stayed to himself and because he was very smart, most kids didn't understand him. Den is shy at first until he gets to know people and then he opens up. But most kids think he's just arrogant, which is true. His father always told him that he had to be the best, the smartest, the fastest, the toughest. And he was becoming just that, so he saw himself as better than most people.
When he was young, he met a boy his age. His name was Stitch and he was a store owner's son. Den liked him because he was nice and because he never brought up anything about Den's lifestyle. Stitch somehow just accepted him with no questions asked and no ulterior motives. When the war officially began, Den was five. His father didn't fight, but he and his family were in constant danger.
When he was 10, Den's father got rip roaring drunk after coming from the field. He had been forced by the President to accompany the soldiers on a mission that was only a few miles outside of the town center. It was his first, but would not be his last mission. His father, drunk and out of control, took out his frustrations on his family, mostly Den. He started beating on Den and all he could do was cower in a corner. When his father grew tired of beating him, he passed out on the couch. Den snuck out of the house that night and went to Stitch's house. Den didn't tell him what happened, but he didn't have to. The blood and bruises and welts showed it all. It was the first time Stitch saw him cry, and it would be the last.
After that night, Den realized he had feelings for Stitch. He wasn't sure what it was but Stitch wasn't just his best friend anymore.
When he was 12, Den's father came home from another mission. He was worse. Den was in his bedroom writing and when his dad came in, he pulled the notebook from Den's hands. He saw what his son wrote. "Den ❤ Stitch".
His father's face turned white and he looked at his son. Den didn't know what was going to happen, his father had never looked like that before. And then his father tore up the notebook and burned it. He started yelling and screaming at Den. He wasn't allowed to see him again, he couldn't be friends with THOSE PEOPLE, none of them, they were a disgrace. He beat Den so bad that Den suffered from a concussion and a few broken ribs and other bones. But during all those days he spent in his room, practically locked up, he knew what he was going to do. He was going to see Stitch again. He wasn't going to stop being his friend. He was going to defy his father, he'd live out on his own if he had to. Once he was fully healed, he would leave this house.
Then one night, he was walking past his father's office and he heard him and a Peacekeeper talking. The door was slightly ajar and it was late at night. Den pressed himself against the wall and listened to their whispers. Thimble Mitten. Shot Dead. It had happened a few weeks ago, while his father was gone on the mission. Then he heard exactly why his father was so mad when he'd come home and found Den writing in his notebook. His father had shot Thimble.
Den walked away quickly and locked himself in his room.
He knew that he could never be friends with Stitch now. His father had done the worst thing, worse than beating Den. Den carried his father's secret, which became his secret, too. It wasn't out of love for his father because he hated him. But love for Stitch. Thimble had died because he was a rebel, that was a truth. Thimble was killed by Den's father, that was a worse truth. Maybe Stitch wouldn't blame him, maybe he would. But Den couldn't even look himself in the mirror after knowing what his father did. His father always told him, "Our Family, Our Legacy." That was the family motto.
