Elwes Jareth Ash
NICKNAMES: Elwes, El AGE: 26 GENDER: Male RESIDENCE: Capitol OCCUPATION: Gamemaker SPECIAL INFO: President Wilhelm Ash's nephew FACE CLAIM: David Hasslehoff PLAYER ALIAS: Rebecca
Personality Elwes is confident and charismatic. He is artistic - far beyond the extent of that he is allowed to show in his work. He values family and loyalty, and he is quite good with the ladies. He believes that a big part of getting through life is in hiding your flaws and being who you are supposed to be. As a result, he has to subdue a lot of his inner enthusiasm and thoughts.
Elwes does not get near standing water, and occasionally the sight of turquoise in anything sends him reeling. He can find a way to get on with almost anyone, and in fact doesn't seem to dislike anyone.
History Elwes was born to a decently rich family in District 2, the only child of a captain in Panem's army and a socialite. His early years were blissfully simple, his life sheltered. This bliss was shattered early though, when at five, three masked figures broke into the Ash household. Janina told her son to hide in the thick hedges that surrounded their pool, and it was there he witnessed something that would stay with him forever. One of the figures grabbed his mother and tried to lift her dress. She fought him, pleading. He hit her hard across the face, sending her tumbling down. Her head hit the edge of the pool, and she no longer moved. Elwes was frozen, waiting for his mother to get up again. The other figures called to their friend, who left, and it was still several minutes before Elwes crawled out of the hedge and to his mother. Her red blood mingled with the turquoise blue of the pool water, the red seeping farther out the longer he watched. That image, as a result, has made him dislike standing water and given him a strong aversion to the color turquoise.
Growing up with a strict captain of a father after that was no easy thing. Remus pushed his boy to always do better, to be better. When Elwes wanted to join the theater club at school, Remus shut it down as ridiculous hobbies for girls. When his father found out he'd been sneaking off to choir practice, he was beaten severely and forced into house arrest for months. The things Remus encouraged, and as a result Elwes often did to avoid a beating, were the "manly" things. He was always enrolled in one sport or another - and he was fairly good at it too. Remus often made him hang out with the sons of his friends, many of whom Elwes could initially barely tolerate but eventually came to some sort of understanding with.
The war erupted when he was 15, and for Elwes, it was a great relief. His father was often called away for long periods of time to meet with Uncle Wilhelm and the other soldiers, leaving Elwes by himself in the house. Many of his father's forced traits were still ingrained in him, so he never gave up the sports or the friends or the girl chasing, which was a part of his life now. He was, however, able to sing and to dance with the girly - as his father would have called them - kids at school. He found an ally in one of his friends who was willing to vouch for a cover story if Remus ever returned home early.
Remus had always planned for his son to become a soldier, and for a few years, he got his wish. At 18, Elwes was sent off to train with the other boys and girls, and soon saw his first battle. But for all his strength and athletic ability, the military found that where he really excelled was in strategy. He could see different angles of upcoming battles, predict how people would use certain terrains. To him, he could see these battles like a stage play to be choreographed - although he would never actually admit that to anyone. So, when the Gamemaker Academy opened a few years later, Elwes was one of the first students signed up.
The Academy seemed perfect. Elwes was able to express himself creatively, and his "battle plans" were theories that he wouldn't have to see carried out in the field. Remus hired him a private tutor, and old friend from the military meant to hone in Elwes strategies. And while Terrington Gates certainly did that, he also took more than a liking to the boy. The first time they kissed, it felt like a piece of Elwes was snapping into place. With Terrington, he both excelled at school and had a freedom behind closed doors that made him feel almost whole.
In the last year of the war, Terrington was called to the front due to the shortness of remaining soldiers. He died out there, at nearly the same time that Elwes was considered graduated from the Academy and set to work on the first Hunger Games arena. He was grateful that this task consumed almost every waking moment of his life, for the loss devastated him.
The war ended, Uncle Wilhelm announced the Hunger Games as repayment from the Districts for the war, and the entire extended Ash family moved into the Capitol. Elwes was publicly a Gamemaker now, suddenly a kind of famous, and it seemed like the rest of his life was set on its track. Then when he heard about the Dark Days Musical some Capitolite was putting together, he was pulled to audition. It didn't even matter that several people at the audition knew his face and talked about him in whispers. That first round of auditions felt amazing. Of course, it was followed shortly after by an official-looking man with a very official-looking sealed envelope that he handed to the musical's director. Elwes shared a glance with that director, and he knew. It was never said aloud, but he knew that somehow his father or uncle had found out - and Elwes was cut from auditioning further among the other crappy singers and dancers. He knew he was good though, knew that he could have made it and escaped everything his father wanted him to be on a train that traveled around the country.
Now, Elwes lives his life much like he has been used to - being the straight, manly, confident guy his father wants while harboring secret hobbies and attractions under the surface. For all that, you wouldn't say he's miserable though - no, he's found his place.
((Thank you so much to everyone who gave some insight/crazy ideas into who Elwes is! I hope he lives up to your wishes!))
