Basil nodded as she looked at Matthias about the fact there was water everywhere. As the male walked over to a large leaf and started drinking from it the tribute looked at him like he was crazy for a second. But as soon as he said it tastes good, the female ran over to a leaf desperate for something to drink. Pouring the water into her mouth it felt amazing. Her throat was overwhelmed with the feeling of water and was demanding for more like a rich kid wanted more toys. The female continued to drink until her body seemed fully quenched with water and looked over at Matthias. The trees around them seemed pretty tall, they had a lot of vegetation so the two could possibly hide in one. After popping a leaf in her mouth to eat the girl had started thinking about the two hiding in a tree. "We can hide out in a tree, like ninjas." The girl said, making a karate-chop movement with her hands afterwards. It earned a laugh out of herself and probably the whole capitol from how silly she was being. Basil turned around towards a tree that seemed high enough to the point if it was needed they could drop out of it easily without getting hurt, along with being tall enough that people wouldn't be able to see them if they were to be directly underneath. As the girl started climbing the tree she spoke out to the boy. "Come on, lets go!" In a excited attitude, climbing would be a fun distraction for the girl to get away from the games. And getting away from the games in anyone's case, is good.

No longer being thirsty and having some more food in his belly made Matthias feel pretty good. Not that he was actually feeling bad beforehand, which was surprising enough in itself. He laughed with Basil at her karate-chop movement, ready to agree to about anything right now. "Let's do it!" he agreed with a smile. She probably had a point anyway. They'd been lucky enough not to run into any other tributes so far, but surely there were still lots of them around. If there had been any deaths in the storm, he couldn't have heard them. He hadn't heard a single canon boom since the brief moment he had his hearing on during the beginning of the Games. He didn't really want to think about how many that meant were probably left. Probably a lot. He would have liked to run into some of them again, like Harrison from District 8, but would Harrison try to kill him now?
Matthias had started toward the tree Basil was climbing when that beeping caught his ear again. The boy looked up, searching for the source of the sound that was becoming somewhat familiar. He smiled as a little package drifted into his outstretched hands. It was smaller even than the one that had delivered Basil's compass, and he opened it carefully. Inside was a small container, with a dark red liquid inside. He examined it carefully, holding it up towards the sun to get a better idea of what it was. He wasn't sick or hurt, so it couldn't be some sort of cure. There was no marker on it. He could share it with Basil, but there wasn't a lot in there, and ... what if it was something bad? So far their sponsor gifts had been nothing but good, but if it wasn't, it was specifically sent to him and he didn't want Basil getting hurt. He glanced at his ally, then pulled the top off and drank the liquid. It was kind of sticky sweet and felt thick going down his throat. He closed his eyes as it coursed through him, waiting to see what would happen. After several moments, he only felt better, not worse. Stronger, happier, more energetic. Smiling, he opened his eyes and looked up at the tree canopy above him. "Thank you, whoever sent this," he said.
Matthias stuck the empty medicine container in his pocket, just in case it would come in handy later. Then he turned back toward the tree and Basil. "Someone's still looking out for us, it seems," he called up to her. He looked back at the tree a little skeptically though. He'd climbed a few trees back home, but not many. He more preferred the open space and being with the animals. Basil had made the whole thing look pretty easy enough, so maybe it'd be fine. They'd be safe up there, wouldn't they? "I'm coming up!" the boy said, and started to follow his friend.

After climbing a little while more I had gotten to the top of the tree. It was a pretty nice sight. I like it, really. I would prefer to stay at the beach. Though I feel like the forest with trees and all might remind Matthias of his home a little bit. That was kind of the second reason why I wanted to come to the forest. As I looked around a sudden thump on the ground had interrupted my thoughts. Looking down in reaction my heart literally and utterly stopped. Matthias was lying on the ground. Face first. Was he breathing? God I hope so.
"Matthias?! Are y-you okay!?" Wait, did my voice crack? Am I-- am I falling in love? No. Not possible. I can't fall in the games. It's stupid, right? Why bother when one of us is going to die anyways? My heart was practically beating out of my chest waiting for a voice- a mumble, maybe even a possible slight movement to give me and signal that he was alive. I wasn't losing my ally this early in the games. Not this early. I won't accept it. I won't take this as a possibility. I was about to lose hope in him, that he died and his cannon was about to fire when I saw his body twitch. Not really twitch, but he was definitely alive. My god. My heart-beat was finally returning to it's normal rate. But what did this mean?
Why was I so.. So worried about Matthias dying? I mean, sure he was my ally.. But I barely knew him at all! Practically day one of the games was when we first talked. I have to be honest. We clicked. Instantly. Obviously it was because we both knew that since we both ran from the bloodbath there would probably be nobody willing to ally with us since we had no weapons or items to protect ourselves. My first thought was to jump out of this tree and help him get up. Which, I did. But I remember the way up. I hope so at least. Jumping down from the tree, I felt my feet slightly buckle beneath me. OH....... Shit... I think and grimace to myself in pain. That hurt. It really did. I think I might have probably sprained it but I can still climb. I hope so at least. Rolling Matthias over, I had shook him slightly. "Are you okay?" I ask him. My words are full of concern and worry.
I know very well that he knows a hell of a lot more about the forest than me, which would be why I need him. Of course he isn't just some food source for myself, he is a friend. A friend in which we have a lot of things in common. What are they? I am pretty sure we all know one. We're in the Hunger Games. The stupid game where you take 23 other lives just so you can live peacefully in the districts to have a child and they'll probably get reaped too. I have always thought this, and was another reason why I didn't want to win the games. Along with that, we are both in the very large chance of dying. Of course we both don't want that but it very well might. Come on Basil, get your shit together. I think to myself, almost punching myself for getting off topic. "Do you want help up? I can boost you, if you want." I speak to my ally. I don't know why I offered so quickly. Was it so we can get out of view from anyone else? So we can just get up in the tree so we don't have to worry about falling out again? Probably.

For a few moments, Matthias had a sort of confidence that he could climb up after Basil. She had made it seem easy enough. As long as he paid attention, he should be fine, right? But a short ways up, he heard a bird singing in a nearby tree. The song was sweet and crisp, carrying easily on the wind. He smiled, listening to it and trying to hear if there was any response. from around them How many birds were there here out there? Did they all sound different, or just like this one? He whistled a little himself, imitating the bird in its song as best he could. When he went to grab his next handhold, he misjudged where it was and slipped. Set off balance by the missed grab, he couldn't save himself from tumbling down to the ground.
The air rushed out of Matthias as he landed, face down, at the base of the tree. He didn't move or get up right away, trying to make sure he hadn't broken something Well, that was stupid. He could focus with the best of them - it had been necessary back in District 10. But one little bird song, and the boy's mind was somewhere else. How did hearing people do it? How on earth did they hear everything around them, all the time, and still be able to focus on normal tasks? When things were visually overwhelming, anyone can close their eyes. But people can't just turn off their hearing - except himself, of course. And maybe he needed to do that a little more often, or he might get himself and Basil killed pretty fast.
He heard Basil's voice above him, which reminded him that he was supposed to be assessing his damage. He twitched a little. It didn't feel too bad. He heard her land on the ground beside him, and he was all ready to try to get up when he felt her hands on his side. He froze, just a little, and let her roll him over. He was laying now on his back looking up at her. She looked really concerned, which filled him with chagrin for worrying her like that. "Yeah... I'm okay," he said, even smiling a little to show he meant it. "Guess I'm not too good at that." He was quiet for a minute after that, not really sure what to do or say. The fading orange sunlight of the day played with Basil's hair as she bent over him, and he could feel some of the long ends of it tickling his face. He probably should be getting up, right? But instead his face was heating up again and he felt a little frozen all at the same time. Why?
Luckily, Basil broke the awkwardness by suggesting a boost. Quickly, Matthias nodded. "Yeah, I think I need it," he admitted, and moved away from her to stand up. He stretched a little, and affirmed he was really fine. He picked up the tarp, which he had left on the ground, and turned away from Basil so that he could unzip his suit and stuff it inside. They didn't have bags, so it's the best they had. Zipping back up, he turned back to the tree to start climbing, letting Basil boost him up. Once he was up a bit, he sat on a thick branch, moved over to make room, and reached out a hand to help her. Not that she probably needed it, but he was going to try anyway. He noticed as he was watching her climb though that she was favoring one foot That was new. Had she hurt it somehow? Once she was up in the tree, he asked. "Can I see your foot? It looks like you hurt it."
Scooting back on the branch so she could lean against the trunk, he gently took her foot in his hands. Stripping off boot and sock, he handed them back to her so she didn't loose them. Gingerly, he felt her ankle, seeing it already start to swell. It looked painful. "I think you might have sprained it, or worse." He hadn't been a whole lot of good back on the farm at home, but he'd been around when someone had to splint a lamed leg before. Aramis had clean broken one once too. Matthias was usually allowed to stick around because he was good at calming the animal or distracting it while the splint was being put on. If he had to guess from what he'd seen of those, Basil's ankle could use a splint too. Since they were just sitting in a tree with no danger that he knew of, maybe he could make one for her.
A beeping sound caught his attention, and a parachute drifted down to the pair of them. Well, drifted to Basil's lap anyway. They were still getting presents. One of these new presents was a machete, and while he normally wouldn't want to touch it, it was perfect right now. "Do you mind?" he asked, and after a moment borrowed the machete. First, he tried to turn his torso away a little from her to unzip his suit some and pull out the tarp. He cut a little section out of the tarp and handed the rest of the tarp to Basil to hold. Setting her foot down gently so he could move, he scooted along the branch to cut some of the smaller branches within reach. The machete was kind of an unwieldy tool, but he tried his best and went slow. Back home, they usually used metal or really sturdy wood, but he'd have to make do with what they had. These trees had thick vines too, which he cut a few of. The boy then set to then making the branches as smooth as he could, and then handed the machete back to Basil. He wrapped the piece of tarp first around her ankle, so the branches wouldn't hurt her. Then, he bundled several of the branches on either side of her ankle and started using the vine to wrap them. It didn't go quite as well in practice as it did in his head, and he had to try several of times before it wrapped properly. It didn't help that he was sure she was watching him the whole time, thinking who knows what. He bundled a few of the flatter branches along the bottom of her foot, and kept wrapping the vine. It went easier this time, only holding one bunch.
The whole process took quite a bit of time, but it seemed they had that at least. He could have waited, and maybe their generous sponsors would have given them a proper splint He didn't know if his splint would actually hold up, or if he'd just looked like a silly boy playing at being helpful and smart. But maybe it'd work. "I've...seen it done loads of times, but I've never done it myself. There's usually better stuff to bind it with too. I don't know how well it will hold, but... how does it feel?"
HP: 28 Inventory: 1 tarp WC: 1195 Notes/Actions: I can change anything in this post if people think I got too godmode-y or unrealistic for Matthias' character. Let me know. I have never felt so much weight on my back before, literally. As I had boosted him up, I honestly felt like I was lifting a weight. Not in any minds of being rude, but still, he was thirteen. He probably weighs more than me. I sigh, and start climbing up once the male had gotten to the top and sat down in the tree. I couldn't help it but flinch in pain every time I used my left ankle to climb. Of course it would hurt. Being the ankle that I had sprained, I had expected it to hurt. But.. It hurt so much. Flinch after flinch, step after step, I progressed my way to the top of this tree. Looking up, I had noticed his arm. Getting a good grip to make sure I don't pull him down with me, I had started to pull/climb myself up at the same time. Eventually, I got up. Sitting down, Matthias gets to work and starts to tend my sprained ankle. Obviously he must have noticed it over the multiple times I cringed while working my way up the tree.
He pokes it, wraps it, does everything to it. But it still hurts. I didn't expect just a sprain would hurt this much. And god knows how much a broken bone felt like. I was worried, I really was. How am I going to be able to walk around or even escape a fight in this condition? So many worried thoughts were flowing through my head and all he asks if it feels okay. No. It does not feel good. I don't dare say that to him. Seeing that we apparently had received a sponsor, I looked at the two items. A machete, in which seemed pretty sharp and enough water to last a day. I almost looked at the water like it was ancient, I wanted to drink it down right then and there but decided not to. Looking around at these trees, ideas started to form in my head. We had a weapon now, great. It can cut, too. Even more great. As I inspect the tree limbs, I come up with an idea. Not just an idea to possibly kill ourselves/kill others, but an idea that could send one of us home. Not as a dead tribute- but a victor.
"You know how to make a fire, right Matthias?" I ask the boy. I refer to last year, when the carnival tent had burned down. Well, this is wood. The number one source to spread a fire. I don't hear his reply, but I speak before I hear him say anymore. "I have a plan." 4cxN8qHp8skill

Basil didn't say anything in response to Matthias' question, or seemed to react much at all to the splint he had tried to make. He knew it wasn't perfect, knew it probably wasn't as good as something his brothers or father would do before he even asked, but he still felt dejected anyway. She didn't like it, or else didn't care. He had just been trying to help, but it probably wouldn't mean anything anyway. If they were attacked, it wouldn't make it easy for Basil to run and it probably still hurt her.
There was an uncomfortable silence. Matthias looked away from Basil, and sucked some more of the water off the leaves around them. It was still drizzling outside their shelter, and while most of the water didn't get through to them, some got through and re-wet the leaves. After getting some of the water, he popped a few of the leaves in his mouth and chewed. They looked like they were the kind that were alright to eat, and he hoped he remembered them right.
Matthias chews on some leaves from the tree: FTXcBjEN7skill
Then Basil spoke up again, and he looked at her curiously. "A fire?" he repeated. Then she said she had a plan. What kind of plan? A plan to stay warm? He wasn't really cold; even this far from the volcano, the island was pretty warm. His suit seemed to hold in his body heat pretty well too. Maybe she was cold though. Or did she want a fire to cook something they hunted or trapped? He swallowed. He hadn't told her that he had practiced trapping during training, because he definitely didn't want to do that. Unless, of course, he set them and walked away to let her kill it. And maybe prepare it. Just thinking that made him feel like such a coward, but as long as it never came out, she'd never have to know. If not those things, what else would they need a fire for? "I don't know, I might be able to make a fire, if we can find enough dry wood. It's still kinda wet out here. What are we going to use it for?"

"I don't know, I might be able to make a fire, if we can find enough dry wood. It's still kinda wet out here. What are we going to use it for?" Oh, dear boy Matthias.. You're so clueless, I know it may sound rude- but isn't it obvious? Woods, fire, he should of gotten the picture but oh well. I grinned. It was a devious grin. Most people would be somewhat horrified by it, but I don't care. "Have you ever heard of the term 'Let it Burn', Matthias?" The girl had asked, looking at him with a small smile spreading a cross her face. "I think we should take that term to a whole new level. How about you?" I said with a grin, almost a devious laugh, but I don't want to attract any other tributes now, do I? That's right. The only time someone's getting the pleasure will be the day I die. Which, may be actually taken literally in the arena. As I stay there, I look up at Matthias one more time.

I am free. No more cages for me, no more waiting eagerly for the chance to run and see open space. No more poking and prodding by small humans in plain white coats or meals delivered on a stick. They might as well be wrapped with pretty ribbons like children get on special days, but I do not like them. It is my time now. My time to be and do what I want to be and do. I did not know where I was going, but now I am here. The ground underneath is soft and squishy, leaves sticking to my slick skin. My claws dig into it and my slim body boundsbetween tall trunks as if they were no obstable. All around me is a canopy of dark green, and I can smell the animals It's a forest, my brain tells me. My brain knows many things that I have never been taught, and his name is Terry. Terry didn't used to always be my brain, because Terry had his own body once. Terry gave his body up to be my brain, and he is the one that helped me get out. No one ever gave me a name, not even Terry. They gave me a number, which Terry told me is not a name: F65193. But I do not need a real name. I am more than that My ears pick up talking. Two of them, one light and one deeper. Something fun, Terry tells me. They are up in the green, but I can climb. We should rip them apart, Terry suggests. I agree. That is what I have these claws for. And teeth, sharp for ripping flesh. I climb a tree next to the one they are in, slithering up it like a snake. I roar, loudly, because I want them scared. I will draw this out, and it will be fun. Then I start to slither to their tree. I have never eaten human before.
*Note: this mutt is indestructible. It will drive the tributes only further into the forest, and attack them if they try to venture out of it.*

Matthias was downright confused at first. Let it burn? Let...what burn, exactly? She was grinning like something evil was up her sleeve, and it probably was. Why didn't she just say it outright? He was never really good at hinting things or subtlety or sarcasm. He could read a person's face to figure out what they might mean by what they were saying pretty well, though. All he could tell from Basil's face was that she meant something big. Something destructive, and probably harmful to someone. Something people would notice. Something like...
The boy's eyes widened as he touched on what might be what she meant. Fire, in a forest. Not for cooking, not for warmth, but... "You mean like... the whole forest?" He looked from her to the tree they were sitting in. The forest had been much better to them than the beach, helping shelter them from the storm, giving them water, and overall being incredibly interesting to him. But if the forest was this nice to the pair of them, it was probably just as nice to all the other tributes who were also using it. There were also birds in this forest though, and animals. He had seen a few of them skittering around, heard the bird song. If they burned the forest, what would happen to them? They'd all die too, wouldn't they?
If Matthias said something like that out loud, he knew it wouldn't be good. Basil would think he was just a cowardly country boy, and so would every sponsor watching this and listening in right now. He wasn't stupid. He absolutely didn't want to burn the forest down. But if they didn't, what chance did they have of surviving, and continuing to be left alone by the Game Makers if they didn't do anything? They hadn't seen another tribute since the first day, and eventually, someone was going to notice.
A roar stopped Matthias' thoughts and saved him the trouble of answering either way. Jumping, the boy looked on the other side of him and saw a huge, green creature slithering toward them. Eyes wide he looked back to Basil. "Come on, we have to get out of here!" he said, though that was probably clear enough to his ally too. He tried to help Basil climb down first, even in spite of how scary that...whatever it was was. He'd much rather it attack him than her, so he tried to keep himself between them as he climbed down the tree. He knew she wouldn't be able to run as fast, so at least if it did attack, she'd have more time to get away.
Once on the ground, it was a little less scary. The thing could still jump on them though. "Run!" he yelled to Basil. He half ran and half tried to pull Basil along, away from the thing. If he was strong, he could have carried her. If he were Jackson, or even Aramis, Matthias could have pulled Basil onto his back and run as if her weight was nothing. But he was not that strong. Since his hearing rendered him pretty useless back home in the eyes of his family, there hadn't ever been a need to try to get as strong as his brothers. Matthias knew that if he tried to carry her, they'd probably both get killed because they would be so slow. But he tried his hardest to get both of them out of there as fast as he could, running deeper into the forest.

Before I could even respond, he's telling me to run. Run? From-- A roar filled my ears. Oh. That. I now know to run, and I get yanked out of the tree along-side of Matthias. I try to run. I really do, but I trip. Not badly, but I scream. I'm scared. I might die. I don't want to die. Wait. Where's the machete? I whip around, and see that our only weapon and my water is sitting in that tree. Before I even tell him, warn him, or anything- I dash. I run as fast as I can to that tree. That machete is ours. I am not letting it get taken away by some stupid mutt. I'm lucky that the machete had fell out, the water I don't care much about, we can probably get more sponsors easily, but I take that machete and I run. I run like I have been training for a marathon. In a way, this is a marathon. And I'm the contestant. The contestant that is falling behind everyone else because of things I need. I am almost limping by now, because running isn't helping my ankle.
Though I don't care. I need to run. I need to get out of here. Not just for me, but for Matthias. I know that he won't be able to protect himself alone against the careers, or anyone, really. I just know it. I'm not saying he's weak, but he'll need someone to protect him. We're the youngest two inside the arena, and the tank-ish career is still alive, which is not a very good thing. As I run, I forget about everything. My surroundings, the mutt behind me, everything. All I am focusing on is getting out. But I falter in my steps, and trip. I sprawl face-first onto the ground. I can't help but suddenly think my end is coming. I try to get up, but I can't. My ankle hurts so much, it's swollen up so much, and I can't do anything to stop it. I scream out his name, "Matthias! Help!" I can't help but feel bad for my sponsors, how silly they must look now, all that money that they spent on me is going to waste. They were sponsoring me so I could win. That's what is pushing me forward. That's why I'm going to win. Using all my strength, I get up and take my machete. I sprint. Or I try to, yelling out his name here and there, looking for him, but I end up just wandering. Looking for my own wonderland.
WC: 467 Notes: Runs away from tree, runs back to tree, grabs machete, runs, trips, gets self-confidence and runs away. (SHE IS FOLLOWING HIM, BUT SHE JUST DOESN'T KNOW IT) Other: bath feels.
