As she stepped up, the trees were absolutely humongous. Like- they must have been at least twenty feet tall. Thirty feet, tops. Basil thought this as she looked up at the trees looming above her head. She was lost in a daze for a second, staring at the beautiful surroundings known as the forest. Shaking herself out of her trance, she walked forward slowly yet cautiously. The forest would obviously be the most mutt-littered spot of all of these areas. Basil suddenly thought of food, there'd have to be some plant bushes around here somewhere right? As she looked around trying to find a bush, she walked slowly towards what she thought was an opening. Then a bush caught her eye. As she raced towards it, she gathered the berries in hopes of them being safe to eat. After placing them in her pocket she started heading towards an area that she had assumed was an opening towards the beach. She hoped so. If she had to stay in here long enough, there is a large chance that mutts will start 'randomly' appearing. c6l76Usg1skill for direction 1skill for the plants

Basil got hungry and took one of the berries she had gathered to pop them into her mouth. As she chewed on them, the sweet, rich juice from the berry flowed down her throat. It was wonderful. Basil didn't recognize how thirsty she was until now. But she knew that these good berries, or at least good by her assumption since she hasn't died yet. Hopefully, she could find more so she would be in plenty supply of mighty fine grapes. Who didn't like grapes in the hunger games? It put the hunger part right out of it! Walking over to another bush of grapes, she gathered them and put them in her other pocket in case they were bad so she couldn't get them mixed up. It appeared that when she thought it lead to an opening to a beach, it really wasn't anything. She had gone the wrong direction apparently, so she decided to walk she'd be happy. As she walked through the small opening, she took one of the berries she had gathered and placed it in her mouth as she slowly tried to chew it. FzHuR7OS1skill for food 1skill for direction

As soon as she tasted the berry, she spewed it out of her mouth. It tasted disgusting, probably old or rotten. Basil didn't know, but all she knew was it was disgusting. If one berry was bad, all of them were. She dumped the berries from her recent gathering on the ground and walked away almost in a quicker manner. She didn't understand why, but she did. As she walked through the forest, trying to get to the beach she wondered what her family thought of her right now. Were they happy? Were they surprised? Cheering their little girl on? Basil hoped so, because if not, she'll win this just to prove their ass wrong. She looked up at the looming trees above her, wondering if she could possibly create a net or tarp for the fish she caught if she even caught any. After chewing on one of her assuming good grapes, she walked forward through the trees. She might of looked kind of weird doing so. But she didn't care. Weird was her middle name. So, she did it with her head raised high. The girl gathered some berries from a bush nearby, in hopes of finding a good supply as she walked through the forest. She kind of liked it here, calm and almost harmless.

Basil grumbled, there was nowhere to be absolutely found here. It was so annoying to the girl, she just wanted to go the beach! With a sigh, she ran her fingernails through her hair as she thought of another plan. She figured the only game plan she'd have would just to be walking around trying to find her way to the beach. So she did so. As she walked, she looked around at the beauty of the forest. It was sad to see that this was just a decoration for the games, because this would be a wonderful home someday.
There was a couple bushes here-and-there, but she didn't bother. Once she got to the beach, she'd have the whole ocean of fish to worry about. The waves crashing against the seashore was very distant, but it excited her. The thought of a beach made her think of paradise, or her own paradise. A paradise where she could be alone, with her family and friends and just rest happily. No worries, everything would be perfect. But nothing in this world is perfect, is it? The Capitol, they're just too lazy to really govern our country. Honestly, they could of just raised taxes or had people work double. This-- this was too much. Taking the lives away of innocent children who weren't even IN the war? Why the hell does that makes sense? Honestly Basil didn't understand the logic. But she couldn't do anything, could she? With a small sigh of frustration, she continued walking. Admiring the beauty of the forest. e3wZnDAg1skill direction

Matthias entered the forest a little cautiously. After a moment's hesitation, he turned his hearing up to low. The battle sounds were far behind him now, so at this low setting, all he could hear was a little of the forest - birds and rustling and the wind. And hopefully, he'd be able to hear that girl if she jumped out at him and attacked him. If she did that though, what could he possibly do? Hit and kick her? He'd never hit a girl before, and the few times he'd hit anyone else, it didn't go so well. If she attacked him, she would probably win and it could be over this early.
He was going to find food first, and worry about the girl when he came across her.

Holding the leafy plant he had picked in his hand, he kept walking and took in his surroundings. It was more beautiful in here, immersed in it as he was, than his training had made it look. And the sounds, the smells... For a few moments, the boy forgot where he was and just enjoyed it. He smiled, walking along at random with his potential food.
Turning a corner, he spotted the girl who had run in earlier and jumped behind a tree. Of course that made noise, so she probably heard him. Peering out, he recognized her as the girl from District 5. Basil. She had been nice, the couple of times he had spoken with her - at least in training. The boy glanced behind him at the still empty and quiet forest, before looking back to her. He cleared his throat and turned up his hearing just a little more. Readying himself to run if he had to, the boy from District 10 tentatively called out. "H-H-Hello? Basil? It-It's Matthias."

The girl was walking along the forest floor, when a voice suddenly had found his way into her head. She had jumped from the sudden noise, but she was glad it was someone that she recognized. It was Matthias, the boy from 10. She was happy to find him, he was one of the few friendly people within the batch of tributes this year. She smiled, and waved towards the boy. "Hey Matthias," Basil said with a grin on her face, it was always nice to see new people. She was kind of relieved actually. He by far was one of the best people she had met within this time and didn't want him to die. "I guess you ran too?" The girl asked in assumption as he had no weapons or backpacks in his hand. She made a small, grim face when she thought about the bloodbath. The girl she had fought for a second for a bag, but Basil ran deciding not to take her chances. The thought of the fall she took when she got tripped by the career made her rub her knee in reflex. She looked around a bit, kind of awkwardly standing in the silence. As she was looking around there was a bush that seemed to be behind Matthias that he didn't get had a couple berries on it, so she walked over towards it to get some hoping that they were good. Maybe this could be an alliance, her and him. They could do it, with just the right amount of heart.

Siri has sponsored Basil 1 Compass for 200 points. Parachute package- *beep* *beep* *beep*
In the greenest of our valleys By good angels tenanted, Once a fair and stately palace- Radiant palace- reared its head. In the monarch Thought's dominion- It stood there! Never seraph spread a pinion Over fabric half so fair!
Banners yellow, glorious, golden, On its roof did float and flow, (This- all this- was in the olden Time long ago,) And every gentle air that dallied, In that sweet day, Along the ramparts plumed and pallid, A winged odor went away.
Wanderers in that happy valley, Through two luminous windows, saw Spirits moving musically, To a lute's well-tuned law, Round about a throne where, sitting (Porphyrogene!) In state his glory well-befitting, The ruler of the realm was seen.
And all with pearl and ruby glowing Was the fair palace door, Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing, And sparkling evermore, A troop of Echoes, whose sweet duty Was but to sing, In voices of surpassing beauty, The wit and wisdom of their king.
But evil things, in robes of sorrow, Assailed the monarch's high estate. (Ah, let us mourn!- for never morrow Shall dawn upon him desolate!) And round about his home the glory That blushed and bloomed, Is but a dim-remembered story Of the old time entombed.
And travellers, now, within that valley, Through the red-litten windows see Vast forms, that move fantastically To a discordant melody, While, like a ghastly rapid river, Through the pale door A hideous throng rush out forever And laugh- but smile no more.

At seeing the girl's grin, a smile spread across Matthias' face. He let his natural desire to be friendly override the caution and fear that he didn't like. From the very little he knew of her from training, she didn't seem like the kind of person to be incredibly sweet and then knife you in the back - she just seemed sweet. She had a sweet voice now too, he found. During training, he had his hearing completely off most of the time so that he could focus, and most of the voices he had heard off-hours were male. Her voice sounded so different from the deeper male voices he'd heard, and he liked it.
The boy came out from from behind his tree and took a few steps toward her. "Yeah. I figured I'd do a little better down here than up there." He took a glance down at the berries she had tried. "Those are rotten. See how dark red they are? Almost black? That's bad for those kind of berries. He looked around and found what he remembered to be another good plant from his training. Picking off several of the leaves, he popped one into his mouth.
ey_JoMBB7skill (Matthias' second snack)
After chewing it a little, he offered out his hand to her "Here, try it," he offered. ((Alternate: If the above plant is bad, Matthias makes a face and retracts his hand.)) Right after he offered her the food, his ears picked up an incredibly faint beeping noise. Looking up and searching the sky for a moment, he saw a parachute come gliding down, rocking a little back and forth in the soft wind. He watched it land right next to Basil's feet. "Looks like you already have someone looking out for you. What did you get?"

Basil smiled, and placed the berries she had just ate on the ground as he suggested they were bad to eat. By now, she was too confused of what berries she had were good or bad so she just dumped them on the ground along with them. Maybe people would think they were good. Matthias had gathered some leaves and ate them, it seemed they were fine so she took one and ate gracefully. She nodded at his statement of doing better down here. "I tried going in, but the girl from four went from me. Good thing is I'm alive still, right?" She said with a smalls mile of enthusiasm. There was a ringing in the air, and she immediately knew what it was. Sponsors! People were already rooting for her it seemed. With a smile as it landed on the ground next to her, she picked it up to open it. Looking inside, it was a compass. She grinned. This would definitely help her get to the beautiful ocean. He asked what she got, and with almost an overjoyed tone she replied back. "It's a compass!" It may have sounded rude, but she was just really excited about it. The girl quickly thought of the beach. She wanted to go to it, but she didn't want to seem rude and leave him. "Do you want to go to the beach? There might be some fish." The girl said, suggesting more of an adventure.

Matthias was glad that he had remembered the leafy plant right that he offered to Basil. He would have hated to give her something rotten, because he wanted her to trust him. He so badly wanted to trust her. Now that he was without Falro or Jackson, and he didn't know who he could trust, he needed something somewhat stable. "Yeah, good thing," the boy agreed when she said it was good she was still alive. It was pretty brave to go in there, even if she didn't come out with anything.
The boy watched as Basil opened up her parachute, and smiled at what she got. He didn't mind that she was sponsored something first, unless it meant she was going to leave him. He looked back up when she suggested going to the beach. Really, he wanted to explore the forest more... but, on the other hand, he'd never gone to a beach before. That might be interesting. "Alright," he agreed with a smile. "I've never been to a beach."
Before they were about to head off though, Matthias grabbed another handful of the plant and stuffed it in his pocket, just in case food was hard to find later.

Basil had grinned when Matthias agreed to go to the beach. She was so exctited about it. It was probably strange to the boy for her to be so excited but she didn't care. She was going to the beach! The thought made her smile ear to ear. She picked some plants, even though she was going to be a fisherlady from now on. Live her life out on the big blue ocean catching fish. She's always wanted to try sushi out and specifically saved it for if/when she went to the capitol and if there was fish in the arena- to eat it for the first time there.
"Do you know how to fish very well?" The girl asked, as she pulled out the compass and tried to find a direction to go. With her adventurous mind in play she giggled. Who didn't like a little bit of adventure in their life? Obviously not this tribute. As she looked around, she nibbled on the leaf she was given as she was in deep thought of where to go. After some contemplation of either to go left, or right- she decided to just walk Northeast. With her compass in hand she pointed in a direction. "That way." The girl suggested, well- not so suggested or commanded- she just determined where they'd go. With that, she smiled with her head held high as she towards her dreamland.

Matthias loved seeing another person so happy. Basil was as excited about going to the beach as... well, he had been when he got the sketchbook from Falro. A sketchbook he couldn't take with him into the arena. But right now, with the distraction of a friendly ally, a beautiful forest, and the prospect of a beach, the 13-year-old was alright. The shaking from this morning was gone, the cornucopia was out of his mind, and he was back to loving his gift from the Capitol. Listening to Basil and the forest was definitely a good use of his ears - even if sometimes his responses were still a little delayed when he wasn't looking at the person who was talking. But maybe he'd have a chance to get better at that.
At Basil's question, Matthias thought about it a moment and then shook his head. "No, I never have. There's nothing at home bigger than a pond, and I don't think I'd like fishing anyway," he told her. He didn't add that it was because he didn't want to kill the fish. He had grown up surrounded by animals that he tried to help survive - not kill. Maybe if it was already dead, or someone else killed it, that would be okay. But if not, he'd much rather stick to leaves and berries.
Matthias nodded and followed Basil as she led them in the direction she thought the beach was. He didn't much mind where they went or how long it took to get there, as long as no one else ran into them and tried to kill them. After a little be, he spoke again. "What's it like in District 5?"

"What's it like in District Five?" the male from ten asked as they walked along the forest like. She ghad to thuink about it a bit. In her opinion, it was kind of depressing. The people there were so skinny and unlively, almost looked like dolls half of the time with their blank faces. Nobody was like her. Nobody. The only time the district started to get lively and excited was when one of their tributes got close to winning for once which rarely happened. That's what she was there for. To have something for District Five to hope for. After some thought she had come up with an answer for the boy. "It's kind of scary, really. The people are so skinny and lanky. They are never happy, its just really depressing there." The girl said as she stared at the ground. After eating one of the grapes she had gathered, she walked towards the beach. "What about District Ten?" The girl asked, looking up at the boy with slightly sparkling eyes that were full of curiousity. epPDF5mx1skill for the nom-noms

Matthias chewed on Basil's answer for a few moments. Unhappy, skinny people? That sounded terrible. Harrison's description of District 8 had been complex and interesting, but maybe he actually liked his home. From the sound of it, Basil didn't. He wanted to know so much more, since that was so little to go off of. He could imagine it, but it was only a small picture As visual as he was, he wanted to be able to imagine what life would be like there, what it looked like, what people did. Since chances were he wouldn't visit it and he didn't have his sketchbook, imagining would be as close as he got.
But Basil asked him about ten then, and he decided not to press her for more about five, not yet anyway. "Well, it's covered with fields and sheep and cows. It's beautiful, really, especially in the springtime when there is new grass and early flowers," he replied, smiling as he described it. "There's this great hill near my house where you can see forever, all around you. I could sit out there all day." And he had.
The boy would have gone on, and easily could have, but his ears picked up that beeping again. The sound kind of prickled him, high pitched and mechanical. He looked up to see it float down to the pair of them, though this time it was harder to tell who it was meant for. Matthias either picked a pretty good ally who got two items already, or someone was telling him to fish. Because, unlike the compass, this package was easy to determine: a fishing rod. After a glance to Basil, he picked it up. "Guess we'll get to go fishing now," he said with an unsure smile. He held the rod a bit awkwardly between the pair of them, like an unspoken question of if she should take it from him.

The girl nodded as she listened to the boy from ten describe his home. From the sight of him smiling she knew that it was close to him. It made her heart warm up. She knew that then and there that she would try to help him win. She just knew he had a special place in his heart for District Ten unlike her with her home district. The description of his district sounded amazing, flowers, animals, fields, almost her (second) dream home. The girl stood there in awe for a second and then she recognized the sound of the waves crashing on the ocean had gotten louder. She was actually getting close to the beach! Her face brightened up again. There was another ringing sound flowing through the air. Two Sponsors already? Dang.. They must like us. The girl thought as the parachute landed. It was obvious what it was- a fishing rod. They wanted them to fish, obviously hoping they were going to go to the beach like she originally intended to. He took it in his hands and almost held the rod awkwardly between the two as if asking if he was allowed to hold it. "You hold it," The tribute from five had said, nodding towards the rod. Now that they were pretty much set- she walked to the beach that was clear in view.

The girl was running in full speed towards the forest. She wanted both herself and Matthias to live. She didn't care what they were doing- the just needed shelter. Basil saw that he had a tarp in his hand and assumed it was from a sponsor. "Come on, our best chances are hiding under the tarp." The girl urged him as she practically took it out of their hands and looks for a decent enough area to hide under for both herself and Matthias. She found a spot, happily. She ran towards it with hopefully with Matthias following and basically hid under it like a little kid with their blanket. She poked her head out and lifted the tarp enough to where she could see him. She made a gesture basically saying 'get over here'. "Get over here, under the tarp." The tribute from five said to the male as the smell of a storm started to roll into her nose. It smelt fine, but it wasn't a good thing. The smell of the hurricane meant that they were either going to have to get into shelter soon or they were going to die. Smiling almost awkwardly, she raised the tarp up a bit higher so he could get in.

Matthias was so busy running and trying to keep with Basil that he almost didn't see the parachute that was coming for him. He only saw it because it was large and his hearing, though overwhelmed still somehow picked up the beeps. The gift landed in the sand in front of him. Barely slowing, the boy snatched it up and kept running. He didn't even register what it was he was holding until the girl turned to him and said something about a tarp. The flow of her oral words being processed in his brain was slow again, and he stared at her, confused, until she snatched the tarp from him. He saw the tarp then, all beautiful greens and browns like the forest around them. Someone had sent him not only a tarp, but a tarp he could hide in. It was the kind of tarp he might have painted himself. As Basil took it from him, something fell out and he leaned over to pick it up. It was a note, with very unfamiliar typed words. None of their other sponsor presents had a note before, and they had probably both been for Basil, so the boy read it eagerly. It was incredibly short, but he must have read it three times over just standing there as the sky rumbled. Lucius and Seneca. Who are they? Matthias couldn't remember meeting anyone named Lucius, and the only Seneca he'd ever heard of was the Game Maker with the wonderful beard. It was the beard that had made him ask his brother Jackson who it was, as they stood in the square with his brother during a mandatory viewing. The Game Maker's face had come on the screens to comment on something. But it couldn't be that Seneca... could it? That man was so important and, well, he'd helped build this arena... But if it was him, he somehow cared about the deaf boy from 10. A man he'd never met and only seen on screens might want him to live. Matthias could hear Basil's voice, yelling at him, but he flipped over the paper first. If they were trying to find a way to bolster him, they had certainly found it. He was smiling as his eyes roved over a picture of something he might seen at home. It was filled with open green spaces and fluffy white sheep and blue skies. It was definitely drawn by two people, both very different, but was predominantly the simpler hand. It gave him a bittersweet reminder of Falro's drawings in his sketchbook, the ones he had drawn with his little brother, Gavin. How beautiful and painful and wonderful those were, how hard it was for Falro to talk about and how special Matthias felt to see and listen to that. Falro. Lucius. Seneca. Basil. Two weeks ago, he would have said that the only person who paid him any mind was Jackson. But now, at least four people cared about him. Four people wanted him to live. Basil was urgently calling him over again. Matthias finally listened and crawled under the tarp with her, wrapping the protective material around himself. But, for as long as he could, he held up a little corner of the tarp to shine some light on the picture so that he could keep looking at it. As soon as the rain started to come, he pulled the paper back in protectively and held it to his chest. He was knee to knee with his ally, happier than he could ever remember being as the rain from the hurricane started to pelt their little shelter. HP: 20/20 Inventory: 1 handful plant stuffs. After a while the pounding rain turned to rain, and the rain turned to sprinkles, then the sound of rain hitting the ground had disappeared. With Basil's personal guess, the Hurricane was over. Yay? They needed water- definitely. But how would they get it? Water was important for their survival. Would they go back to the beach? No. The beach was way too wide in the open. Besides- everyone will be most likely heading towards the beach eventually for water. She didn't want to be the person there when the careers had found their way to the area. After a little while of making sure the rain was for sure done, the girl got out of the tarp. Stretching and yawning the girl looked around. You could see the trees definitely got rained on- the wood turned to a darker shade from it. Basil wanted to get food, water, shelter fast. If both her and Matthias were to get far in the games- they needed shelter. But where? Would a tree be a possible idea? Both of them were at the training station for detection, and from Basil's point of view- they were the best people in hiding themselves from the world. That may sound kind of depressing- but it was true. Both of them were amazing at camouflaging themselves into the world. As the girl stood up, she looked around for any signs of food or water. From here- there was none besides plant life. "Matthias, how are we going to get water?" The girl asked in almost a worried tone. Her throat felt a little scratchy- it was also already day two and they had no water. What were they going to do?

As the rain really started pounding, it was more than Matthias could take. Like splashing around in the water earlier, the sound was threatening to overwhelm him. Figuring that he'd still be able to figure out if Basil was talking to him even though it was dark, the boy reached up and turned off his hearing. It was wonderfully silent under the tarp now, and he didn't mind it as he and Basil waited out the storm. He folded up the paper from his sponsors and tucked it into one of his pockets, hoping it would be enough to keep it from the rain. His thoughts started on that picture, and how grateful he was to the people who cared about him. As time passed, though, he became a little more aware of his ally and how close they were to each other. He could feel her knees against his, and in the close confines, even smell her. He liked the way she smelled, but he wasn't stupid enough to say something like that. She would probably think he was creepy, but smell had always been his second-most reliable sense. He couldn't remember the last time he was close to anyone like this that wasn't related to him, let alone a girl. He'd liked a few girls in class before, and one was even nice to him sometimes, but he had never gotten this close to them. Matthias' face flushed as he realized that he liked it, and he was just glad it was too dark under the tarp for Basil to see.
Matthias only knew the storm must be over when Basil moved aside the tarp and started to climb out of their shelter. His hands went quickly to his ears to turn up the sound again and then stood up as well. Everything around them was soaking wet, and the sound of the dripping all around him was pleasant. He looked at Basil when she spoke next, and was reminded just how thirsty he was too. They needed to find water, and probably some food, as quickly as possible. The boy looked around him as he thought about it. They could go back to the beach, and he had seen her drink the water there. That's where she wanted to be anyway, and they had the fishing pole to fish. But it was started to get dark already. They might be able to make do here for a little bit, and try for the beach again tomorrow. He could find them more plants to eat, or set traps for food... though he didn't really like that idea too much. This time it might be a real squirrel his trap caught.
Water first. "Well... everything's wet, isn't it?" he said, glancing back to his ally. "Maybe we can get some water that way, before it all sinks into the ground." The boy walked up to one of the trees. Some of the bottom leaves were big and held the rainwater pretty well. Tipping one of the leaves down, he poured the few droplets of rain on one leaf into his mouth, sucking on the leaf to get as much as he could. The water was earthy and tangy, not unlike the water he pulled up from the wells back home. It felt good going down his throat though, and his body cried out for more. "Try it, it's tasty," he said to Basil, before going to the next leaf. He sucked on leaf after leaf, needing to go through quite a lot in order for it to slake his thirst. But, luckily, they were surrounded by leaves that were covered with fresh rainwater.
When his throat was a little less dry, he stepped back. That felt much better. Remembering the leaves he had collected earlier, he pulled them out of his pocket and chewed on them to help satisfy his hungry belly. Hopefully they were still good, and he'd actually picked the right ones.
