Matthias was running, and once he couldn't see the cornucopia or hear footsteps crashing after him, he slowed. Breathing heavily, he sat down on the grey rock, facing the top of the volcano. He waited a minute or two, just to be sure, then looked down at his bags again. And saw nothing. Oh right, the cloak! The boy stripped it off, setting it on the rock beside him, and studied the two bags he had pulled from the feast. His was larger, and the one for the boy from 2 was so small. It was probably some sort of pill, maybe medicine; had Reko been injured?
After another glance to the top of the volcano, Matthias reached up to his ears and made sure his hearing was fully up. One advantage of being out here on the side of the volcano was the open space and little place to hide for the others. He wanted to make sure he could see and hear anyone coming. He first inspected the bag meant for the boy from two. Unzipping it, he upended it into one of his hands and... nothing came out. He reached in, turned it inside out, and still nothing. Flinging the empty bag away, he half scoooted half felt a bit farther down the side of the volcano. He glanced around quickly, rechecking the area around him. Either the Gamemakers had sent Reko an empty bag, or... he'd already gotten it. And he was up there, somewhere. Or maybe he'd already gotten out and was hiding in the ashen forest or next to a boulder, just waiting to use whatever special thing came in this very small package. That couldn't be good. He was glad he hadn't tried to kill Calem again while he was invisible though, because if the boy from 2 was actually up there, Matthias wouldn't have seen that blade coming.
Matthias then inspected his own bag. There were two things inside, and he was at first disappointed when he withdrew another knife. He had already proven how completely useless he was with one. But when he looked at it further, he saw that it wasn't just a knife. There was an odd greenish quality to the metal, almost sickly looking. It could only be one thing: poison. If he managed to actually stick this into someone, it could probably do some serious damage. He tied the bag around the blade of the weapon, so he wouldn't accidentally touch it, and picked up the second item. A mine. An explosive trap. This item was perfect, and he wondered just who had had a say in what item he was given. Whoever it was, knew him pretty well. It was his only real chance.
Matthias set the mine down carefully, stuffed his invisibility cloak and old knife into his backpack, and stood up again. Throwing the backpack over his shoulder, he picked up the mine and the bag containing the poison knife, searching out a good place to lay his trap. He thought back to training before these Games for a moment, how he'd been too shocked to continue learning traps when one of his traps caught a holographic squirrel. The poor thing had looked so pathetic, and he'd felt a wave of guilt. He'd felt a different kind of guilt, more real, after his fire. And now, here he was, setting a different kind of trap, only this time it was to catch and kill a fellow tribute. He'd have follow through all the way and watch this time, not get squeamish; this was the end. Whether it was his end or the end of the other tributes was still up in the air.
Finding the perfect spot, Matthias carefully planted his mine in the ground and covered it as best he could. When he was satisfied it was well-hidden, he he retreated down the volcano a bit and looked up again to the top. There was no point of getting back under the invisibility cloak now; no one would come down this way if they couldn't see him. Since he could still see the top of the volcano, he guessed that any tribute looking down from the top could see him too. So the young tribute held his knife ready in front of him, if a little shaky. He peeled back the bag he'd put around it, and waited for someone to come and get him.
