Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
Lilac rushed to Scorpius's house carrying only her one bag of clothes. They said she wouldn't need anything, just some clothes. The peacekeepers would take care of the rest of the her items in the apartment. It was all so sudden. She had barely woken up to get ready for work when they arrived with orders to take her back to The Capitol. She'd questioned them, wondering why The Capitol needed her back. Was it something she'd done? What is because of Scorpius? Did they know? She didn't ask anything about this, just simply: why? But if the peacekeepers knew, they didn't tell her. She didn't know the peacekeepers who told her the news, she'd never treated them.
They gave her two hours to pack her things and get to the train station. She only needed 5 minutes to pack her bags and put on clothes. Then fifteen minutes to run to Scorpius's house. She'd never run before, not like that. Time was of the essence, time was something she did not have.
"Scorpius!" she knocked on the door, but no answer. She looked through the windows, rattled the house and screamed at the top of her lungs. But if he wasn't there. He wouldn't ignore her, would he? No, he couldn't. She was running out of time. She'd already wasted too much trying to see if he was home. She ran down the street towards the club where she'd seen him work. It was the middle of the day and the club was rather empty, and there was no Scorpius. Lila was desperate now, she ran to the his work, his usual one. But they hadn't seen him yet, should turn up in an hour or so. But she didn't have that long. She only had 45 minutes left.
Lila ran back to Scorpius's house, hoping he would be there and when he wasn't, she collapsed on the front porch. 20 minutes. That's all she had and she had no idea where he was.
Lila pulled out her journal and began to write.
"Dear Scorpius,
I didn't mean it. I didn't mean any of the things I said to you that day. There is only one thing you need to know, I love you. I'm sorry I couldn't tell you in person. I'm sorry we never had the chance. I'm sorry for so many things. But I love you.
LL"

1 YEAR LATER maybe i've always been more comfortable in chaos
Without any words, Scorpius slid out of his bed and away from Haley. Starling was already in his room for the night, so he didn't feel uncomfortable grabbing his clothes from a drawer and walking to the bathroom. The air around him was too cool for his own liking, not that the eternally cold water of the shower would help that. He didn’t complain, though, because the icy water was the only thing that could bring him back after a long day under the glaring sun in the fields. As he cut on the water,he thought about that hot sun, trying to ignore the shivers that went down his spine.
As the water trickled down his face, it brought back a long forgotten memory. Him, standing shirtless under the rain under the eace of a store. Lilac Lexie standing beside him, then dragging him back to her apartment.
It had been a while since he’d thought of her. It had been a year since she’d disappeared back to the Capitol. After he’d left her apartment following an argument, she’d never came back. He had known that it was a bad, heated fight, but he somehow still expected to rebound, to still see her. After a few weeks, he went looking. By the time he did, there was not a single trace of her left. Just an empty apartment, an empty office. There was nothing left to prove that she’d ever even existed except for his memories.
He’d stayed alone for a few weeks, trying to do for money what he could around the District. It wasn’t even a month before he had done his walk of shame back to the club. One of the other dancers there, Haley, started talking to him. He didn’t have a great deal of interest in her that did not involve the bottles that she sometimes brought to work. Eventually, she ran her bar tab over her rent and got kicked out of her house. That night, she’d slept at his. The next day, she showed up again. After that, with no particular spoken arrangement made, Haley became a constant presence there when he was. Coworkers joked that they were dating, and Scorpius never put down the rumors. Before too long, she moved from the couch to his bed. That had been an unspoken arrangement, too.
Months later, and nothing had changed. During the days he woke up, went to the fields, came home, showered, went to the club, then came home with Haley. At first, various substances of varying legalities had been thrown in the mix. After he’d gotten fired from one job, though, he stopped for the most part. And, day after day, that was life.
The water that had been running over Scorpius’s face stopped on its own. There was still soap in his hair, though. Knowing that the shower’s untimely death had been a long time coming, he decided not to haggle with it and stepped out. At first, Scorpius thought he heard voices outside but chalked it up to his exhaustion as he stuck his head in the sink to wash out his hair. He turned off the water, figuring that it was going to be as good as it would get. He stopped, looking in front of the mirror. His face looked thinner than it had, the circles under his eyes dark, and something of a stubble that he hadn’t bothered to shave growing up his jawline. Scorpius sighed, turning away. There was no point in looking at himself for any longer than he had too. His back now to the mirror, he pulled on the clothes he’d laid out for himself. Scorpius sighed a bit before opening the door to step out into the hall.
He turned into the hall, but stopped after a few steps toward the kitchen. Haley had been standing up in the doorway, talking to someone. Who was at his house, especially late at night? Apparently he wasn’t as tired as he thought. He turned around to see whoever had found their way inside, but stopped abruptly.
”Lilac,” Scorpius choked out, his eyes widening at the sight he hadn’t seen in a year.

Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
After leaving district 9 Lila had been ripped from the district she'd lived in for years. She had no chance to say goodbye, not that there was really anyone to say goodbye to. Only Scorpius. But she couldn't even say goodbye to him properly. The note was left under the door, he'd see it when he opened the door and got home. A plan white piece of paper torn right out from her journal. She tried not to cry as she wrote it, but she couldn't help it. She should have done more, been more. But it was too late for that now, it was too late for everything.
She rode the train back to The Capitol with just her bag and the clothes she wore. When she arrived, people looked at her oddly, as if she didn't belong. And she didn't. Her with her plain clothes, plain hair, plain face. She didn't belong in The Capitol just like she didn't belong in District 9. In truth, Lilac Lexie had no home. And now she was back at The Capitol. The place she was born, the place that spat her out and abandoned her in some foreign district. What did they want with her now? Was she there to be punished? Was it because she did a horrible job? Was it because someone told them about Scorpius? Or the Peacekeepers she slept with during the first few years of her arrival to district 9?
The peacekeepers lead her to a building, up the elevator, and down a hallway. It looked like a building for offices. But for what, she didn't know. She held in her breath as they opened the door for her and told her to go inside, but she knew they wouldn't follow. When she finally got in and saw the woman looking back at her, she exhaled, filling her lungs with capitol air.
There sat a woman.
She would never forget her. She was the woman who cared for Lila when she was at the orphanage.
Lilac, you've grown thin dear. And your hair, it's so... well. Sit. Sit, I have great news. It's your time to shine.
One year later (fall/winter after 76th HG) She arrived at District 9 exactly after sunrise. But she had to go directly to the Justice Building first. They had things to tell her, things to show her. Too many things. When all she really wanted was to just go down the street to Scorpius's house. It had been a year since she left and so much had happened. So many things she couldn't control, couldn't stop. She knew she shouldn't see him, it was a bad idea. But she had to. Scorpius was the only love she'd ever known, even if that love never fully developed, even if that love was squashed before it could even begin. She knew she loved him, she still did.
The lights from inside the house showed her that he was still awake and inside. The last time she had been there, the house was empty. She looked down at the bottom of the door, the door she'd slid the note under. She wondered what he did when he came in and saw the note. She wondered if it broke his heart, if he felt anything at all.
But when she knocked on the door and it opened, it felt as if she'd been hit on the chest with a hundred pounds. The first thing that came to her mind wasn't: is she a new woman? No.. The first thing that came to her mind was that Scorpius didn't exist anymore.
Does Scorpius Payne still live here?
Yes. Who are you?
Relief. He lived there, he existed, he was alive. But then... who was this woman?
I'm Lilac, an old friend of his. Is he home?
He's--
"Lilac" His voice sounded exactly as she'd remembered it the last time she heard it. That day in her apartment when they'd both yelled. When she'd said thing she didn't mean, and was never able to take back.
"Hello, Scorpius," her voice was even and stable, though her insides were shaking.

The first thing Scorpius had noticed about Lilac. In District 9, most people were very thin, even with the grain that covered every piece of land that people didn’t. Workers were muscled from their hard labor in the fields but hardly ever weighed much. Lilac - like everyone else - had been very light. Now, she’d filled out in a way that made her look like she’d never left the Capitol before, like she had never missed a meal. His throat had closed at the sight of her and what it meant.
A year ago, when she’d disappeared without any trace, Scorpius assumed that he would never see her again. That one day, he’d forget her and it would all have been like a distant memory that he perhaps had heard once in a story. But there she was, standing on her doorstep, bringing back what she’d taken with her when she’d left: the feelings, the memories, everything. Scorpius could vividly remember the last night he’d seen her. He’d yelled, she’d yelled back with tears streaming down her face. When he’d gotten to his house, he’d slammed the side door so hard that it fell off its hinges.
Haley stood between them, looking at Lilac, to Scorpius, then back to Lilac again. She certainly wasn’t a stupid girl by any means. She would be able to tell that something was happening here, something she didn’t know about. He hadn’t ever told her anything. Sure, she knew about Andy and Apollo - everyone in the district did. But she’d never heard about it from his own mouth, nor about Starling, or his parents, or Lilac. These days, he didn’t do much talking at all, especially if it was significant in some way.
He exhaled a bit and put his hand against the wall for a measure of stability. He turned to look at Haley, dressed only in one of his larger shirts. ”Could you - uh - can we get a minute, Haley?” he asked. She gave him a long look that he tried very hard not to see before nodding and returning to the bedroom. Knowing her, she wouldn’t ask about who Lilac was or what she wanted. Knowing himself, Scorpius knew that he wouldn’t tell her.
Scorpius tried to collect himself but ultimately failed. He looked up to meet Lilac’s eyes. ”What are you doing back here?” he asked, not in a rude, ‘please take this as an invitation to leave’ way, but just as a blunt question of someone who had been thrown around between circumstances so much that it felt like whiplash. Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
Haley. That was the woman's name. Lila watched Haley walk away and Scorpius walked to stand in her place. He seemed uncomfortable and even his voice said it-- he didn't want her there. Lila had expected him to be surprised, shocked, but not this. Lila bit her bottom lip and tried to smile, her lips shaking. "I wanted to see you," she said, her voice in between desperation and question. Was he glad she was there, at least?
Lila wanted to tell him everything, but nothing at the same time. She was too afraid of what he might say, what he would think. She wanted to share everything she'd done, learned, and seen at The Capitol. To share that missing year of her life that he didn't know about. And she wanted him to tell her all about his. Everyday she wasn't there. What did he do? Did he still work at the same place? Was he still... dancing... How was he? Is he happy? So many thoughts and questions swam in her mind, but she knew she could only say one thing.
"I love you."

More than anything, Scorpius was tired. Fall meant harvest season for the wheat, which meant that farmers were sometimes willing to pay a little more in exchange for longer hours. Sometimes, Scorpius had no time to go to the club after the days in the field. He’d come so exhausted that he’d simply collapse in bed, too sore and stiff to move for at least an hour. It hadn’t been one of those days, but he’d been recovering from a long series of them. It was hard to not feel motionless and repetitive, being sucked up by something much bigger than himself as something no bigger than an ant. In the year that Lilac had been gone, it felt like, Scorpius hadn’t felt at all. Sometimes, she really angered him. What he hadn’t realized, though, was that she just made him feel. The absence of her was dulling. He had nothing left to ignite him. Soon, he felt, his work would extinguish him entirely. To see Lilac there on his doorstep felt surreal. Aside from appearance, he felt that she was mostly unchanged. She still felt like the same old Lilac. What would happen when she realized who he’d become? He was so beaten down by life. His personality had been eaten up by this lingering tiredness that consumed him each day. Scorpius felt so sick of it all sometimes.
He was torn. Half of him wanted to explain. Scorpius wanted to tell her that he had tried, that at least he was feeding Starling and keeping him in school. He wasn’t hungry - or that hungry, at least - anymore, and work was fairly constant. Sacrificing himself had been what was necessary to achieve that, to keep his head above water. For a while, Haley had been part of that too. Scorpius got the idea that she was in a similar position, that they both were seeking someone to help them feel less depleted. All he learned that it was possible to feel lonely when he was in the same room, in the same bed, as someone else. The other half (the bigger half, perhaps) was ashamed of his circumstances.
Scorpius controlled himself and fought all of that down fairly well, he thought, at least until Lilac said those three words that sent him off the edge.
It was like he was knocked on his ass by a huge blow. Scorpius had felt too much with her, he thought, but it was better than feeling nothing at all. Without really thinking, he stepped outside the door, letting it come to shut quietly behind him. Scorpius had done so much thinking. He was sick and tired of dwelling on things, of letting his thoughts consume him, so he turned them off. And he moved forward to kiss those lips that had been shaking just a second ago.

Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
Lila hadn't been taken by surprise. In fact, it was what she had been craving all along. She had looked forward to this the moment she was told she'd go back to District 9. The feel and taste of his lips were like a cool drink of water on a hot summer day. Like tasting vanilla ice cream for the first time. Like a warm bath at the end of the night. She allowed herself to get lost in it, wrapping her arms around him and pulling him close. Hunger and desire fed off of each other as their kiss deepened, when she thought it was over, she pulled him closer once more. She wasn't sure when it was she realized she couldn't breathe, but she pulled away, slowly.
Lila smiled, her hands slipping down his arms and holding his hands. "I thought about that letter I wrote, over and over. I wish I had gotten to say a proper goodbye. But at least now--"
She broke off, feeling tears in her eyes and wiping them quickly away. Her heart swelled, she'd never been this happy in her entire life. And this was just the beginning.

Thoughts were the dark things that preyed on Scorpius at night, that gnawed on him until he was left feeling raw and empty. If he would have allowed it, his thoughts would have warned him that he shouldn’t kiss Liliac, Haley was right inside and how would she feel?
But he was so sick of them and was finally ready to split away from them. What he found on the other side was nothing short of bliss.
After the first month or so of being with Haley, Scorpius stopped kissing her. Kissing implied passion, or some sort of lusty, heated desire, and Scorpius didn’t manage either. Haley happened to be another person to help pay the bills, someone to put him to sleep at night and warm his bed.
The jolts of electric he felt when he kissed Lilac almost stung. He never felt so much in an entire year.
Scorpius was reminded of the violent storms that rolled in over 9 during the springs and summers. There would be powerful winds and dark skies with claps of thunder that seemed to shake the whole ground, and then invariably, lightning would strike a field and ignite the crops. Scorpius felt the same type of jolt hit him, electrocuting every single inch of his being into action.
Scorpius had pulled Lilac’s body tight against his own, desperately wanting - no, needing - to feel the warmth of her flesh and breathe in her scent. In a year, she had changed so much, but somehow, she was still the same.
Lilac was the one to pull away. Even though the kiss had taken his breath, he felt more energized than he ever had, like he’d been given a puff of life instead somehow. Lilac’s hands slid into his own. Scorpius squeezed them automatically.
”Hey-“ he said when he saw tears, his voice a little rough from the kiss. ”What letter are you talking about?”

Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
"The one I left you," she said, taking another step back to collect herself. This had to be a dream. Was this real? Was his really happening? After a year, was something finally going her way? She looked at him, her head tilting. "I wrote you a letter and left it here the day I left. I tried to find you that day, but you weren't anywhere and my train was leaving, so I left you a letter. You didn't get it?"
It didn't seem to matter anyways. He had kissed her, that was enough. That was declaration of his love for her, even if he hadn't said 'I love you' back. It didn't matter who the other woman was that was lying on his bed right now. Lilac tried not to think about her, she'd be gone by tomorrow and Lilac would take her place with him, where she was always meant to be.
It took a year apart and the fear of losing him forever for her to finally realize that, but she knew it deep down in her heart. And Scorpius must know it, too.
"It's okay, it doesn't matter," she smiled at him. "I have to go, though. I'm supposed to be meeting the mayor now, they have something important for me to do. I don't think Therapy like last time, something else, they said it was confidential. But I had to come see you first."

Scorpius shook his head as Lilac mentioned a letter. He never got one. “No, I never got a letter. I never knew that you left one.” He frowned, but Lilac already seemed to be past it. She was smiling now, seeming like she had no worries left in the world.
When Lilac said that she was going to leave, Scorpius felt an unexpected pang of fear race through his body. Speaking with the mayor sounded like urgent business, something important. His eyes widened at her comment. “You’ll be back, though, right?” Scorpius had to ask. The idea of losing Lilac for another year, especially after what just happened, seemed impossible. He could never handle that pain again.
Before he let her answer, Scorpius bent to kiss her again. He let himself say the words that skirted on the edge of his tongue when he broke the kiss after a moment. “I love you, too, Lilac. Promise to come back?” Scorpius hated how needy he sounded, but he couldn’t bear the thought of not seeing her again. Not now. Not ever again.

Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
Lila smiled, her heart leaping and the butterflies fluttering in her stomach. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she melted into his kiss. Nothing else mattered now, just him. She allowed their lips to part, but kept her body pressed against his.
"I'll be back as soon as I can. Maybe later tonight?" She gave him a sly smile. She wasn't sure how long the meeting with the mayor would last or why she couldn't meet with the mayor tomorrow, but they had requested her come as soon as she stepped off the train. This little stop was just something they'd have to wait for, Lila would deal with whatever consequences they'd give her. Scorpius came first, he would always come first.
"I promise," the words whispered through her lips like a silent promise into the night. She kissed him lightly once more before untangling her arms off him and stepping backwards down the porch. The heat of his body left her quickly, goose bumps covering her flesh from his absence.
She turned to walk down the street towards the town, but stopped for one moment to look back at him before continuing on into the dark night.

Scorpius smiled down at Lilac despite himself. His mind was reeling at such a fast speed that in response, it completely shut down. The rational part of him that would make him ask questions about the situation, that wouldn’t let him tell someone that he’d just seen in the first time in a year that he loved them. It would demand that this was too sudden, too risky. But his tired mind and his tired heart had nothing left within it to challenge this. It felt like some gift, like the most unexpected of life changing miracles. Really, Scorpius was still half sure that he was dreaming.
Part of him wanted Lilac to stay. After all, they just had their all to brief reunion. The other part was relieved for the time he would have to clean up the collateral: Haley.
Scorpius nodded at her promise, chasing to hold desperately to the idea that she would come back. After all this time, after all that had happened, there wasn’t another option. Scorpius let her leave, holding on to her until there was the last brush of the tips of her fingers as she left his porch, moving toward the Justice Building in the crisp night air. Her absence left a void of cold where just moments ago he felt the warmth of her body pressed against his.
Scorpius stood out on the porch for a moment, watching her figure disappear down the street. As much as he wanted to deny it, it felt almost if he was taking his last glance, just in case. Scorpius shook his head at himself. Lilac would come back. She had to. Finally, her shape disappeared from the street, leaving Scorpius to completely reevaluate the life he’d lived for the past year, starting with the one person he drug along with him throughout it. Scorpius turned to reenter his house and collect himself. Right as he pulled open the heavy wooden door with its chipping white paint, he caught a glimpse of Haley standing right in the doorway, staring right back at him.

Lilac Lexie If I kiss you, will I die?
***One shot. Just decided to put it here instead of a new thread.***
The walk to the Justice Building was quick, quicker than she'd anticipated. Her thoughts were filled with Scorpius and what their life together would look like. She could get a better apartment, the Capitol hadn't made accommodations for her, instead they gave her an allowance that was plenty enough to get her a nice apartment in the merchant section of District 9. Her life was finally coming together. Would Scorpius want to live with her? But then she remembered his little brother. Scorpius wouldn't leave him behind. But there would be plenty of room in the apartment, she'd make sure of it. And if he didn't want to leave his home, the one that Andy had worked so hard to get for them, she would live with him. Their house was better than her old apartment with its broken door. She smiled at the memory of her old home, it WAS her home when she lived here. It held a lot of bad memories, but it also held some good ones. She never realized it before. But this was a new life, a new life with Scorpius. They would be together, maybe he'd even ask her to marry him. They could have children. They could be happy.
Her mind pulled into the sight in front of her. The door to the Justice Building still open with one Peacekeeper on guard. He didn't ask her what she wanted, simple stood there as if he'd been expecting her. Everyone else had gone. The lights were off save for one inside the Mayor's office which was down the hall. She heard men's voices coming inside and as she walked, her heels grew louder. Their voices stopped, listening for her as she walked towards them. She stopped at the door, the Mayor and another man sat at the desk. They stood up and looked at her, but only the man she'd never seen before smiled at her widely. The mayor's smile didn't meet his ears and he nodded at her before motioning for the seat beside the other man.
"Ms. Lexie," the mayor said as he sad. "I'm glad you could make it."
"I'm sorry to be late, I got a little lost from the train station," she took a step forward and was greeted with a handshake from the other man. Though it was night time, he didn't show signs of a five o'clock shadow. His jaw was wide, as were his shoulders. She didn't hesitate to shake his hand. "I'm Lilac."
"It's nice to finally meet you. I've seen pictures, but you are more radiant in person," he said, his voice deep and rich. "I'm William Maxwell, you can call me Liam."
Lila smiled her practice smile, the one she put on for Capitolites who liked to compliment her in an exaggerated manner. Though he didn't look like a Capitolite, he certainly had been taken care of. He didn't look like a man that never went without. He closed the door before sitting himself down beside her. Lila looked at the Mayor and the man, Liam. With just them and the door closed, she realized how odd this meeting was. A secret meeting. In the middle of the night. She'd been so caught up in her thoughts about Scorpius that she hadn't paid attention to anything else.
"Tomorrow," the Mayor began, "I'm stepping down as Mayor. And Liam will take my place."
Lila's brows furrowed but she said nothing. He'd been mayor for as long as Lila could remember, years before she even showed up in District 9. Why was he stepping down now?
"I'm getting old in my years and I've had a long run, so it's time. Ms. Lexie, the Capitol suggested that you could help William here with running the District. You're a smart young woman with education that far exceeds everyone here, I have no doubt that you'll be a great asset to the new mayor."
"Um," Lila swallowed, "am I to be his secretary?" She frowned,a secretary would be a downgrade from a therapist, even if it was to the Mayor.
Liam laughed and turned to her, "No. What the mayor is trying to say is that... I would like you to be by my side when I am Mayor. I'm already thirty five with no wife and no children, and that's the problem. The public likes to see a family man and so does the Capitol. When I learned about you, I was amazed. You've been through so much and you're intelligent. I couldn't imagine a more suitable wife."
