The tribute was five was in paradise. As she stepped onto the sand a warm feeling washed over the girl almost telling her that she had gotten to the beach. She was almost relieved and overjoyed at the same time by being on the beach. Her hair flew freely by her side as the girl walked swiftly over the sand. She giggled at the feeling of the sand tickling her feet and the moist feeling from the waves squished beneath her toes. The girl looked up at the water and she was in awe. There were so many fish there, and by her assumption she could drink the water too. After 'quickly walking' (more like running) into the water she had her own little frenzy. Playing in the water she felt like the kid that she never was. It was amazing to the girl. She didn't care who saw or what others thought- but she LOVED it. Every single second of it. The girl accidentally swallowed some water but didn't care-- she'd die in her dreamland. After settling down from her experience- and slightly noticing Matthias giving her a really weird eye she had gotten a serious face. Basil probably looked like an idiot in front of the boy. She blushed in embarrassment she turned around and sat down in the shallow end of the water. Memories from her childhood had flashed into her mind. Basil never really got to enjoy her childhood- which was why she always acted such like one. Her parents pushed her- enthused her to mature faster than others because they didn't want their daughter to be a wimp if she were into the games. At the slight thought of her shoved-away childhood her eyes started to water up. People could obviously tell that being childish was not a given for the tribute at that time. Wiping away the tears obviously knowing that the whole country could be watching, the girl tried to catch some fish with her hands. XRUyuW|X1skill (For da Fiish)

Matthias relaxed his arm and kept hold of the fishing pole when Basil said he should hold onto it. He really didn't want to fish when they got to the beach, but the fact that she trusted him to hold it was good. He knew he shouldn't have to ask about things like that. He was going to have to fight to stay alive in here. Everyone watching the pair of them right now - at home or in the Capitol - probably thought he was just pushover that wouldn't make it past the first fight. And they were probably right, but the boy just couldn't help it. He wanted a friend, and right now he was going to try and do everything he could not to scare off Basil.
Following her, Matthias broke through the last of the trees and stepped onto the beach. Sparkling blue waters and fine sand stretched out in front of him, open and inviting. Like the view of the fields from atop his favorite hill, the water extended out as far as he could see, disappearing only when it met up with the sky. He could see now why Basil had been so excited - it was wonderful here. Even better than the forest. She ran off ahead of him now, her golden hair catching the sunlight as she jumped into the water and splashed around. He smiled, enjoying the sound of the waves, the less solid feeling of sand under his feet, and the sight of watching someone else truly enjoythemselves.
A moment later, his face fell. Maybe everything was too good. The arena was beautiful, he had a friend, and in the Hunger Games, that probably meant something bad was coming. Maybe something - or someone - was about to jump out at them. Maybe there were spots in the water that would pull them under and drown them. What if one caught Basil right now? He didn't even have any idea how to swim out to save her. Matthias stood at the edge of the water, with now a worried look on his face as he thought about the things that could go wrong. That was of course when Basil turned back to look at him, and he must have been looking at her pretty funny because she immediately turned away from him.
He instantly felt bad. He'd always wanted to get better at controlling how his emotions played out on his face, but when he was deaf, it had always been hard enough just to pay attention and control everything else. Putting aside his worry about the things that could harm he and Basil out here, the boy placed the fishing pole on the ground and stepped into the water. He walked to close the distance between them and sat down in the shallow water beside her. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you stop," he told her honestly. She looked so much sadder now, trying to catch fish with her hands. It was kind of funny too, and he knew he shouldn't laugh at her, but he couldn't stop a smile from touching his lips.
To cover it up some and try to make Basil happy again, Matthias splashed her. The sound of the rushing water was louder than he expected, because he'd only heard it from a distance a few moments ago. It made him jump and cover his ears on impulse. He blushed right after and glanced at Basil, thinking that now he was the one that looked ridiculous. So to cover that up too and try to make himself get used to the sound, he kept splashing. Not at Basil - or at least not only at her - but he pushed the water forwards and back and sideways and hit it. It was like cymbals crashing in his head, but to the boy with too much going on in his thoughts, the cacophony was the perfect way to clear it.

Another tear had found its' way onto her face by the time she heard him say sorry. "It's okay, really. I just am trying to live my childhood in case--" The thought of her death had cut her off. Death was a really touchy subject to the female and she didn't like it. She always hated funerals- they seemed too depressing to the girl. "In case I died. I never really got to live my childhood, so this is my real only chance" The tribute from five had said as she looked into the crystal-clear water with a face that basically defined sadness. But, that was quickly fixed when Matthias had splashed her in the face with water. "You did NOT just do that." the girl asked almost with a voice that seemed like a high-school girl who just got burned with a small laugh. Jumping up with a smile on her face, she splashed him back. But after seeing the boy cover his ears she decided to not make too much noise. The girl had looked over at the ocean as the boy splashed around a bit, which made her giggle. "Well I think we should start fishing, might as well while we're here right?" The girl said. Sitting down, she tried to grab some of the somewhat large fish. Not like, twenty feet huge but something that would support a meal. Out of curiosity, the girl took a drink of the water. It was the only water source in the arena, so it must of been fresh-water right? QPWonyXM1skill (for Fish c:)

Matthias hated that he did something to make Basil cry, and his face reflected how sad that made him. He felt like he was supposed to do something to comfort her, but he didn't know the first thing about how to do that. He'd never really been around girls when they cried, except his mother sometimes. He wasn't so good at comforting her, not since he'd been little anyway. When he was hearing and she'd used to call him Vian, he would crawl into her lap when she was sad and tell her stories. He'd use big hand gestures to make her laugh and she'd end up helping him with all the voices. It hadn't worked after he'd been sick and lost his hearing, and sometimes his mother had just cried harder when he'd tried to comfort her. Sometimes he was the reason she cried at all.
What Basil said about childhood and dying was pretty familiar to him. He had certainly thought about that kind of stuff after he'd been reaped, because the chances of him winning were so small. But he didn't want to be sad about that now, or have Basil sad about it. "We better make it good then," he said, right before he splashed her. And as he splashed around, even though the loud water was overwhelming and hurt his ears, he still heard her giggles among all of it. That made it worth it too.
When he stopped splashing, it felt like there was a ringing in his ears from the sudden loss of sound. His brain couldn't put Basil's next words together properly, and it was a good thing he was already sitting because he was sure he would have fallen over. Shaking his head, he looked over to see her trying to catch fish again. He let himself laugh a little this time as it slithered away from her easily. "That's what we have the fishing pole for," he said, standing up to splash back to where he'd set it down. He was a little unsteady on his feet as his ears adjusted again, and he almost fell once, but he got to the pole. Sloshing back to her, he held it out to her. "Here, use this. I bet you're better than me with it."

As the girl took the rod from the boy, she heard a distant rumble. Looking up she was horrified by the sight- a hurricane. Both her AND Matthias needed to get out of here- fast. "Matthias- we need to get out of here. Now." The girl said, almost leading the way back to the forest. He might not have seen it but she knew that for both of them to live- they had to leave. Even if it did mean leaving the beach. Living was more important than a dream. The girl urged him forward. "Come on, let's go. We need to take cover." Basil said as she nodded towards the forming hurricane. She was scared by this. The gamemakers could do ANYTHING. It wouldn't surprise the girl if a couple tributes were to die from the storm itself. So, she fled.

Matthias handed the fishing pole over to Basil and looked up at her when she said his name. Confused at her distress, the boy looked from Basil to what she was staring at: the churning waters and dark sky that was settling a little ways offshore. It looked angry, and it was growing steadily more chaotic even in the short time he watched it. His eyes widened, not knowing what all of that would be bringing their way. Whatever it was, it didn't look good at all. Out in the middle of the open beach, it was sure to crush them.
Not taking the time to respond verbally, Matthias just nodded and sloshed through the shallow water after Basil. Once on shore, they were both running through the very hard-to-run-in sand, trying to get away from it as quickly as possible. This is the bad thing that was coming, he thought, as he chanced to glance back at the coming storm. Would it still reach them inside the forest anyway? If he had to guess, the answer was probably yes, but at least the promise of trees sounded comforting.
It was starting to get extremely windy on the beach, and Matthias had to fight harder to run. "Come on!" he yelled to Basil. She had the compass, but hadn't gotten it out yet. So the boy chose a direction, hoping to help lead both of them to safety that much quicker.

A parachute drops towards MATTHIAS. Inside is a Camouflage tarp good for protecting a maximum of 2 people from the elements. It also adds +5 DETECTION when HIDING beneath it in the FOREST (does not work for sneaking around).
With it was a folded piece of paper. On one side is a note:

A small piece created by Seneca and Lucius Crane inspired by images of District 10 and animals there. Mainly drawn by the ten year old but with contributions from his father, made specifically to send to Matthias. Image includes sheep. No added survival value, but good for morale and a show of support.
