Matthias was headed back in the Capitol after only being gone from it a couple of months. The tour across the districts, except his own, had been exhausting. As the train neared the Capitol, the 13-year-old was filled with a mix of both excitement and dread. The excitement was for the mood of the Capitol. More than any district or place he had ever been, the Capitol was about the most welcoming place there was. This included his home district, which didn't quite know how to treat their newest victor when people were so used to ignoring or bullying him before. District 10 was confusing and a roller coaster ride, but the Capitol was welcoming and exciting. He loved the people and the beautiful streets. His dread came in at his nagging fear that it had changed, that the people of the Capitol had become disillusioned with him after seeing their victor outside of the arena. He feared that he couldn't live up to himself, and that the Capitol for him would be just as disappointing and painful as the districts had been. He didn't want to disappoint them, because they had been the only group of people before who had accepted him unconditionally both before and immediately after the Games. Still, as soon as Matthias had pulled out of District 12, he had breathed a small sigh of relief. He only had one speech left to give, and that was at his home district. That one wouldn't be bad, he assured himself, because there had only been one death there: his district partner. But there would be no speeches in the Capitol for him, no tribute families or microphones or incredibly uncomfortable silences. There, he would just have to show up to things and smile and be cheerful, which he thought he'd be able to manage. The boy had set aside his sketchbook for this train ride, instead taking the time to fully enjoy his train. He had glanced in the cars before, spent some time in them, but they hadn't held as much interest before. His mind had been too preoccupied. There was a car for eating and one for sleeping, obviously, but many others. There was the bar car, which Falro could fully enjoy now. The fact that his mentor had stayed sober before and during his Games had meant a lot to Matthias, but now there was no reason for him to abstain. Curious, Matthias had been allowed to try some of the clear liquid in one of the bottles, but immediately hated it. It felt like fire going down his throat, and he wanted to stay far away from anything that reminded him of fire. There was a car full every kind of thing he could possibly imagine to create some work of art, from paints and papers to foreign things he didn't entirely know how to use. He spent some time in there, but pushed on. One car held animals, another was full of curious items - mostly in boxes - that had an ever changing inventory as they went from district to district. There were even more cars, and the boy spent his time moving through all of them. By the time they pulled into the Capitol, he had psyched himself up as much as he could. His prep team set to work almost immediately, and his outfit was a curious choice. In most of the districts, he had worn colorful combinations, usually a solid color of some kind. He had welcomed the wardrobe, since his normal District 10 attired was drab and he enjoyed the colors. His outfit this time was a solid color as well, but the color was black. He looked at his outfit in the mirror as his team gushed about how wonderful it was. "Really? Black?" he had asked them, to which they assured him it was the only way to make him stand out as much as he deserved to. Matthias followed his escort, prep team and Falro out to the waiting Capitol party. He felt so small walking next to them into that crowd of over-the-top outfits and... well, full grown adults. He was only about five feet tall. But as soon as they had started making their way through the crowd, eager Capitolites rushed forward to meet him. His dread and fears slipped away as he shook hands with brightly colored ladies and beaming men. Perhaps he'd meet Lucius and Seneca sometime, two of his sponsors in the Games. There didn't seem to be many kids here though, which was sad, but he was planning to make the best of this night. How he felt tonight might be the best he'd feel for a long time after. Lucius had never been so excited for a party before. He had spent the entire day eagerly awaiting for it to be time to leave, constantly announcing how much time was left before Seneca said they would be leaving. He even got all dressed up and groomed without making a fuss like he typically did. He was much more of a stay in your pajamas all day kind of guy when he didn't have to worry about school or going somewhere. Even as a younger child he was always asking if he could just stay in his jammies when he and Cade went for walks and such. Even going out now he preferred to at least just be in more casual clothing. He was picky about what he went out in now, but his style was so simple compared to the rest of the capitol. After getting ready himself and spending what seemed like hours nagging Seneca to hurry up so they could go, they finally left and headed to the president's mansion for the Capitol Victory Party.
Luc had never attended one of these parties before. He had always opted to stay at home with Cade instead of having to go put himself through such torture. He attended very few big events to begin with. The crowds of loud and typically drunken people made him very uneasy and it was difficult for Seneca to bring him along when the child basically just stayed attached to his hip the entire night. He also didn't like the idea of being anywhere around President Snow and he seemed to always be around most of these events. He had only gone to the Cornucopia day one because Cade was out and he hadn't wanted to be stuck at home with Keivan, but that one had turned out well thanks to Rue. These parties had always been instantly crossed off his list though. On top of everything else he didn't want to celebrate some kid who managed to kill a bunch of other kids. Who was probably proud of what he had done. He hated the idea of that, but this time it was different. Matthias wasn't like the other victors.
He had been wanting to meet Matthias here since the night he and Seneca had made the drawing for him. Lucius had had a hand in saving this boy's life. Lucius, a ten year old boy, had managed to help save another child's life. It felt great and he wanted to get to know this boy. He wanted to be his friend and this kid would be allowed back in the Capitol, unlike Rue, so it wouldn't be difficult getting to see him in the future. He had made him more pictures on his own this time and had tucked them away inside his jacket to give to him when he finally met him. He just had to wait until he actually arrived at the party, since it seemed he wasn't there yet when he and Seneca arrived. He just stuck close to his father and followed him around for the time being.
It wasn't terribly long before he heard people get excited and saw a crowd rush over toward someone. That had to be him. It had to be Matthias. He smiled brightly and tugged on Seneca's shirt. "Daddy he is here!" he said excitedly, looking back toward the boy and the crowd quickly. He moved away from Seneca quickly to go toward them, but he hung back for a moment, waiting for the perfect break in the crowd. There were too many people around him right now and Lucius didn't want to feel stuck when he went to talk to the boy. He could wait a moment and he did.
As soon as there was a break in the crowd though he moved over quickly, trying to hide his excitement slightly, but he wasn't doing a very good job at containing it. It leaked out in his friendly, excited smile and in the quickness of his movement. He got to the boy and sort of just froze for a second, not sure what to say to him. He took a step back, tempted to run back to Seneca, but he didn't. He took a breath and let the smile return. "Hi Matthias." he said, his voice soft and quiet. "I'm Lucius. Lucius Crane. My daddy and I made that picture for you."

Seneca hadn't seen Lucius this excited about anything in quite some time. He'd been happy sure about drawing the pictures. And about seeing Atticus in Thirteen. Beyond that there hadn't been as much excitement as Seneca would hope in the boy's life. Where Seneca had learned his respect and care for the world around him, beyond the capitol beliefs, Lucius seemed to have that naturally. He could appreciate it even. But that meant less smiles and more questions. Things he wasn't always ready to answer. It also brought to them these circumstances. Lucius had begged to support Matthias and without them, the boy might have been dead. It was a lot because of them that this party was from a boy from Ten, not the giant from Two. He was concerned how Snow really felt but he was sure he'd figure that out tonight as well. Right now he was personally pleased. Matthias wasn't rebellious, he would be controllable. If Snow was concerned about the victor, it wasn't about the boy's behavior. As far as Seneca was concerned he was the best option of the group. Smart, well behaved and fairly loyal, an easy one to keep control of, the Capitol citizens loved him. A little hope for the district... And the plans they already had for the next Games could easily squash that hope for Snow's liking. But Seneca was stuck between. Holding out in his position and helping their rebellion. Small hints. Things that even their very perceptive president could miss.
Tonight wasn't for plotting though. Not unless Snow would pull him aside for a chat. That would come when it happened. He instead was busy being amused by how anxious Lucius was for the party. But himself being Seneca Crane, he took his time to get ready just perfect. Between dressing nice and Keivan helping to perfect the look of the beard for the night, he took longer than a normal work morning for sure. He didn't make Lucius wait forever though, and they still managed to make it to the party on time. Before the guest of honor arrived, before Snow made an appearance. Seneca had been to these parties many times before though. It would be quite rude of him as a Gamemaker, especially in recent years as Head Gamemaker, to not arrive to the Victor's party. It was ab obligation of the job, without actually being required. At least it was a good party, and everyone that he knew ended up being there. In the time since the close of the games, between working on helping with new arena ideas, he'd joined Lucius in making some art for Matthias, but he would let Lucius hand it off.
He walked into the party quietly with Lucius. The party was already started, people gathering to talk with friends and discuss the Games themselves. It wasn't Seneca's proudest work Games wise, but he liked the outcome. They had just had some disappointing tributes to Gamemaker standards. Mainly the lack of a good career pack was the issue. Seneca wasn't in a chatty mood though, he grabbed a drink and a couple of snacks, letting Lucius grab a little. He should have expected the boy to follow him around, parties weren't really his thing. He just wanted Matthias. Seneca made short and polite conversations with old friends, other Gamemakers, a couple of people who just had questions. He was fairly popular until the arrival of the most important person of the night.
Lucius pulled on his shirt, and Seneca looked down quickly to hear him speak. It seemed the individual he had been speaking to was also interested and headed that way instead of continuing to talk. It wasn't a loss. The colorful young man was getting on Seneca's nerves. Instead Lucius started off quickly. Seneca frowned some, but he followed quietly. Other than holding a drink he didn't want to spill, he had no reason he couldn't catch up with Lucius. It was as he paused by the crowd that Seneca caught up. As they stopped, he set a hand gently on Lucius' shoulder, watching Matthias through the crowd.
Falro stood by Matthias looking a bit less grumpy than normal. That was an oddity for Seneca to see. And he wasn't already drinking. Evaluating Falro wasn't a priority though, and he stuck close to Lucius slipping through the group of people. "Luc he could be busy." Seneca warned, but he wasn't going to stop him. The boy was excited and for good reason. Seneca came behind Lucius as the boy finished saying hi. He was proud. The child spoke up for himself instead of shying away. He returned a hand to Lucius' shoulder for support and comfort for the boy, wanting him to know he was around as well. He gave a bit of a nod at the next part, giving Matthias a bit of a nod.
"Lucius did most of the drawing." Seneca said quietly, though held a hand toward Matthias. "I'm Seneca by the way. It's good to reall see you." He commented, then glanced to a very bitter looking Falro. "And you too, Falro." He added, giving a polite smile. Falro just gave a bit of a grunt, not in a mood to talk to Gamemakers. Especially Seneca. He felt he was a ridiculous looking individual and hated his job. Seneca sighed a bit, but turned his attention back to Matthias. "I hope the Capitol has been treating you well." He added. words// tags// @lucius Matthias Jensen and anyone else who comes in. notes// Yay parties!

The difference between this Capitol party and the rest of his victory tour so far was more than vast. Matthias was surrounded by a sea of faces - a prospect that normally terrified him. Back home, people stared either because they were watching his latest torment or waiting for him to mess up as he was trying to give an answer in class. The later did happen fairly often, since teachers still called on him although he hadn't usually been able to read all of what they were saying. On this victory tour, that sea of faces had been a mixture of emotions from anger to hate to tolerance, but there wasn't really joy or acceptance there. He'd always been afraid of what people would do or say to him. But here, surrounded by smiles and people saying his name with kindness, he felt a happiness he had no desire to quell.
After a group greeted and left him, Matthias caught sight of a blonde boy not far off. Since there weren't many children here it seemed, and the boy looked relatively normal in this crowd, the sight made him smile. He saw the flicker of hesitation though, and almost stepped forward to greet the boy anyway. He craved a friend and was unused to this world of adults. But if there was anything being in the Arena had taught him, it was to be wary. The boy who had grown up spending most of his time watching people, and thinking he understood them, doubted his perceptions and impulses now. Everything was so much more complicated than it had ever been, and he didn't want to assume anything about this boy.
He had turned and was taking in an elaborate gold costume with midnight blue accents when there was a voice beside him. He smiled and turned to see the boy standing beside him, a smile on his face as well. Matthias thought he'd likely be smiling all night - whether he wanted to or just to be polite - but he was more than just happy to meet him when the boy stated his name. So this was Lucius Crane, one half of the pair that had done more than just send him sponsor gifts. A second later, the other half came forward in the all-to-familiar-looking Seneca Crane. Immediately, he wanted to pour out his sincere thanks, to let them know how much it had meant to him to sponsor him. It wasn't just the drawing either, which would have been enough; they had also at least sent the tarp he had huddled underneath with Basil. They surely sent a variety of other things - maybe the cloak, the armor, or even just food and water. He'd needed all of it.
Instead, Matthias just held out his hand to the boy, although his feelings were as clear on his face as they always were. "I'm so glad to meet you, Lucius," he said, then looked to Seneca. "You too, Mr. Crane. Thank you for believing in me." He swallowed and reached into the pocket of his suit jacket. He extracted the drawing which, for making it through most of the Hunger Games, was still in decent shape. It was only a little wrinkled, the paper a bit worn. He unfolded it in his hands, glancing at the now familiar lines, and then looked back up to the pair of them. "I knew it was mostly Lucius. I mean - I thought so anyway. I can tell what parts each of you did. The styles are so different, but they go together so well. They remind me of...well, they remind me of someone else's." He glanced at Falro, but then quickly looked back to his sponsors. He wasn't going to give his mentor's secret away. "I love it, really."
At Mr. Crane's question, he nodded. "Yes, the Capitol has been treating me very well. I feel more welcome here than I... Everyone's so nice to me all the time." He really had to work on his un-rehearsed speech, didn't he? It was a wonder he hadn't said ridiculously stupid things on stage in all the districts, but that had a little more pressure. He was filled with emotion then as he was now, but in the Capitol he felt safer. Not being on a stage helped, and talking to people he'd been so eager to meet had as well. But he still needed to be careful how much he said though; he knew that.

Lucius watched Matthias with a bit of a smile, glancing to his hand for a moment before he just stepped closer to Matthias and wrapped his arms around him in a very excited and tight embrace. He was more into hugs than he was into a handshake. He felt like it meant more and showed who he was just a bit better. He didn't even think about it being awkward for the person on the receiving end. "I am so glad to meet you too!" he said excitedly, stepping back as he released him from the hug in a timely manner.
He smiled brightly when Matthias pulled out the drawing. He had been curious for sure if he had managed to keep it or if it had somehow gotten destroyed in the arena. He was more than pleased to see that Matthias still had it and that he was still carrying it around with him. He giggled some though as he said he could tell apart their drawings. It was nice that he noticed the different styles. It was something Lucius had always loved about drawing with his father. They were different, but fit so well together, just like the two of them did as people. It wasn't just about Seneca having years more to perfect his drawing either, while Luc still needed work despite having advanced skills for his age, it was simply about the different styles.
"I made you more. Well we both did! But some of them are just from me." Luc told him as he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small pile of drawings that he happily held out for him to take. There were several different drawings. Some involved more sheep and various other animals. One was just a pretty sunset he had and another was just a pretty landscape that he had painted one day when he was stuck at home with Keivan while Cade and Seneca were both busy. One was of Matthias introducing Luc to sheep, something that Luc wanted to happen some day. Others just depicted Matthias as a victor as a sort of congratulations. They were just little things that Lucius had done with him in mind as opposed to his typical random ideas for art.
He glanced over toward Falro though after a moment, suddenly noticing the other man was there. He hadn't really been paying much attention to begin with, but the way he didn't greet his father in a friendly way and just his overall feel made him uneasy. He didn't seem terribly friendly and the way Matthias looked to him and then didn't really finish what he was saying, not truly, made him more confused. Why couldn't he say whatever he was going to say? It couldn't be that man that the drawings reminded Matthias of, could it? He backed up a bit until he was standing right against his father.
He couldn't help, but smile though at what Matthias said. "You should feel welcome here! So many of us wanted you to come here. Daddy and I did everything we could to make sure you got out safely." he told him, nodding a bit proudly. He was still so very proud of himself for having saved another person's life or at least having had a big role in doing so. How many ten year olds could say that?

Caesar Flickerman and his daughter Brinley had been invited to the Victor's Party at the President Snow's luxurious mansion, and that was one invitation that could not be turned down without great risk of the President's ire. His wife, Tilly, was still quite under the weather, to the extent that the doctor's had advised strongly that she not attend. In fact, the next day she would be admitted to hospital, very quietly, of course, so that a battery of tests could be run. The confusion on the doctors' faces worried Caesar very much, but there was no way to show that here, especially as he was awaiting his daughter, and she might see him before he saw her, and he was not about to worry her as much as he himself was worried about his wife.
Caesar had made sure to arrive early, and meet people who had arranged beforehand with him to gain some time to talk to him about various things. It was rare that a party did not include some work meetings as well as some enjoyment.
Caesar was in a dark suit tailored with his usual cut, but with subtle threads of different colors which ran vertically and would catch the light suddenly, with a colorful pop, like the thinnest line of light. Very subdued, but noticeable in the close quarters of a conversation. Some of the threads matched the antique gold color of his hair, bringing his look, as usual, into harmony. Caesar had not seen Brinley's gown yet, for she was still getting ready when he had had to leave.
Society in general was very well represented at the party. He of course knew everyone either socially or personally. He saw Seneca Crane and his son approach and speak with Matthias almost the moment the Victor arrived. He did happen to be standing close enough to overhear that Crane and his son had provided sponsorship to Matthias, and only his long practice kept his brows from rising. Flickerman was not allowed to sponsor anyone in the Games, for to do so showed partiality. That Crane, the head GameMaker had done so ... Caesar would try to talk to Seneca about this before the night was over, for to have the winner be sponsored so heavily by the head GameMaker, and who had gone on to Victory, was a scandal if there ever was one in the Capitol. Caesar, who liked Seneca and was inclined to like his son as well, had no wish to get either in trouble, so he would say nothing until they could speak in private. This was the perfect place; since everyone was talking here, the listening devices would hear nothing but a jumble. People knew how to foil cameras, too: turn now and then so the angles kept changing, and disrupting a straight feed, just when you needed to speak certain key words.
Caesar waited for Brinley, but stayed close enough to Seneca to be able to follow his movements once he and had written him a note and contrived to bump into him slightly, with an ever-polite "Excuse me" as he slipped the note into his pocket. "We should talk, at your convenience," he had written, signing it Caesar. No one would think anything of it if they saw it, for notes were another common thing at a party of such grandeur, opulance, and therefore attendance.
Now if only Brinley would arrive. He hoped she had not changed her mind about coming.
WC: 601 Tag: Seneca Crane, Brinley Flickerman, and everyone else at the party Notes: There was no way Caesar would not have been expected to attend, and since Brinley was invited, had to find a way to have them arrive separately.
