Bryce gave a small nod to his district partner as they were ushered off the stage and into the justice building. As least her knew her and he would do what her could to at least make the trip to the capitol as comfortable as possible for her. He couldn't promise anything in game to her. He stepped into the room he was to wait in all alone. He looked at the bareness of the room and felt at home in it. As at home in it as he possible could feel. Simple was always the way to go and that's how it looked in district nine. Planting and tending crop would be going on while he was away. The mills would be running and things would not change here in the district. People would be watching the games because you had too if you had the means too. You had to stand in the square for a little bit if you didn't have a tv at home. After all most work done was outside for those in district nine. The mills had their own tv's so you couldn't escape it there. He shook his head, nothing would change for the rest of district nine but his family was going to have to deal without him. They would have only his memory to comfort them and his face on the giant screen. He would not be able to protect Lidia from the carnage or the feelings that he was sure she was feeling right now. He had no way to change anything. He would fight though. He would fight to get home to his little girl. He would find some way to continue to help her on her journey of life. He had to because he feared for what might happen to her if he didn't.
It seemed like ages that he was standing in the middle of the room just thinking. Strategies playing in his head. His battle was already starting and the arena was not the first place he would have to fight to prove himself. The door opened and a small twelve year old girl ran up to him. She shuddered in his grip. She wasn't crying Lidia never cried but she was upset. It was something that only Bryce would pick up though. She wrapped herself around him and pushed her back only enough to bend down onto his knees so that she was taller than him but just a hair. He looked up into his sister's eyes. "Its alright Lidia." It was all he could say to her. He couldn't promise her anything and he knew she wouldn't talk to him with their parents just behind her. However, she bent close to her ear. "You better come back you hear. I don't want to be alone." He looked back at her trying not to break down himself. He hugged her tightly because it was all he could do. They knew the chances of his survival but he would try with all his might. He let go of her and looked at his parents. "you have to be patient with her. You have to be by her side when she had nightmares. You can't leave her all by herself." He wasn't asking them he was giving his parents orders.
His parents just gave him a nod and one by one hugged him tightly. That was all the words the family would exchange. Except for Lidia whispering something Bryce never thought he would hear in a million years. "I love you big brother." "I love you too little one." He whispered back to her as the peacekeepers came in with a times up and his parents left but Lidia didn't want too. She lingered despite the Peacekeepers trying to grab her to take her out. She escaped their grasp. Bryce gave her a nod and she slipped out past the peacekeepers who just shut the door again leaving Bryce alone in his thoughts. How long had it been? Lidia never spoke her feelings but she had just done that to him. It was going to be the last memory of home he was going to have. It was something to keep him fighting. The seventeen year old boy choked back tears because he wanted to hear it from her again. He knew what would happen if he perished in the games so he had to try.

Soon enough he and his district partner were being loaded into the train. He looked up at the sleek silver cars. He looked back at his district one last time before walking onto the train and inside. He sat down with his district partner as they marveled at the food and drink that was around them. They were not sure what to do with all of it. Bryce felt out of place the instant they had walked in and his partner had been a little too distraught to notice much as they came in. She was now looking around and trying to dry the tears on her face. Bryce walked over picking up a fudge brownie and handing it too her. She took it from him and tentatively ate it. He gave her a smile and looked around the compartment. Where were their mentors. After all there weren't many in district nine as district nine did not have a great track record. There hadn't been a winner in district nine in decades likely. Bryce couldn't remember the last one or even hearing of the last one. In recent years they hadn't even made it out of the blood bath. However, a few years ago a district nine had made it to at least fifth place in the games which was the closet nine had been in a long time. Still making it past the curse of the bloodbath would be an interesting feat.
He looked out the window as the train began to roll down the tracks. He got lost in thought once again. There were just two many things to consider this go around. He had to make it to the last ones standing. He wasn't sure how he was going to do it but he had to at least try. Of course no amount of planning could solve the issues that might come up that no one would think of. He didn't know the arena and plans could change in a heart beat. He shook it off and just watched as they headed down the tracks everything passing in a blur. He finally retired to the sleeping compartments late into the night. He tossed and turned on the soft mattress not really knowing what to do with himself to begin with. Everything was just so odd and interesting. He got little sleep as he emerged from the sleeping cart at some point the next day. His district partner was not there so he assumed she was still in her sleeping cart. He looked around and sat back down where he had been the day before. There was still food there for them to eat but he wasn't hungry at the moment. Soon enough he got up and took a muffin.
It went on like this for a bit until the day that they arrived in the capitol. He did what any one who was good with people would do. He waved to the crowd. They were finally here in hell. It sure did look pretty though.
