[attr="class","petit"] [break] [attr="class","petitcontent"] [attr="class","petitcontentstyle"] [attr="class","petitfirstletter"]9 months had passed since the day Aless found out she was pregnant. She'd taken leave from The Capitol, a personal leave. Instead of going back to District 2, she went to District 13. It was not a difficult journey, at least not the way the Finnick had taken her. She did not use her authority and kept her identity hidden, instead it was Finnick who pulled all the strings and talked to everyone. She needed only to follow him. [break][break] The first few days in District 13 were brutal, but mostly lonely. People didn't like her and didn't want anything to do with her. President Coin put her in a compartment apart from everyone else, partly for Aless's sake and partly for everyone else's. It didn't help that Aless wasn't that great when it came to people. She was so used to being and acting like a Peacekeeper that she had forgotten how to just act like a person who didn't suspect anything from anyone. But she was skeptic and she was wary. A peacekeeper in District 13, she didn't think it would end well, but what other choice did she have?[break][break] She had waited weeks, months, for Elder to come. She had told him that Finnick would come get him when the time was right. She waited three months and Elder still didn't come. Then three months turned to six. And now nine. She was laying on the hospital bed, waiting for the doctor to come in and examine her. She'd bled only a few minutes ago in her compartment and fell on the floor. It took some time for the soldiers to get there and carry her to the hospital after she rang the emergency bell in her compartment. The nurses came in and out, checking her vitals and looking inside her stomach through ultra sounds, but they had refused to let her see anything. [break][break] All she knew right now was that the pain she was in was excruciating, even with the anesthesia, and she was losing more and more blood, though they had tried to keep her from bleeding out and putting blood back in her body. Aless was becoming too weak. [break][break] "I need to see Finnick," Aless said to the nurse who was looking at a screen. The nurse shook her head, "He isn't here. He won't be back until next month."[break][break] Aless tried to sit up but the pain in her stomach sharpened. She hissed as she laid back down. "No. No I told him I was due this week, he has to come! Check the flight schedules. Please! He said he was coming." With Elder. He promised. He promised![break][break] The nurse only shook her head before the doctor came. His face was grave and he hadn't even been there more than two seconds. "What?" Aless stared at him. [break][break] He pulled up a rolling chair and sat down next to her bed. "As you know... The nurses have run tests. Tomorrow is your due day, so the baby is fully grown. However..." He hesitated. Aless squeezed her fingers together. "Your body might not make it through delivery."[break][break] Aless's lips parted. "Wh--what?"[break][break] "You're loosing too much blood and the placenta is too low. Your chances of living through this is... well, it's not good."[break][break] "How bad?" Aless's lips shook.[break][break] "Ten percent. Maybe less, maybe more. There's no..." the doctor shook his head, "no real number I can give you."[break][break] Aless's body sank into the bed. She looked up at the white ceiling and white lights. Her breathing was slowing and she was finally able to feel the weakness that had been seeping out all her energy. She thought it was just all part of the delivery, but this wasn't normal. Bleeding like she was, that was not normal. The plastic scraped against the floor as the doctor stood up. [break][break] "We have to perform an emergency c-section, the nurses will get you ready." [break][break] Aless didn't watch him leave, but she heard his footsteps become more silent as he walked out.[break][break] ----[break][break] Outside the room:[break][break] "Doctor, why didn't you tell her?" the nurse asked as soon as the doctor closed the door. [break][break] "I'm certain she's going to die, she doesn't need to know." The doctor looked at Aless's charts again. Cancers plagued her body. [break][break] "And the child?" the nurse asked. [break][break] "Let's see if it makes it through delivery first," he said before handing her the charts and going into a separate room to prepare for the surgery. For Elder, the not knowing had been the worst part of the affair. Everything had been perfect. There had been the ring, and there had been hope. He loved Alessandra so much, and his only intent had been for them to be happy. But, of course, everything had gone wrong. All of the sudden, there was a baby and an extended personal leave for Alessandra. Finnick, who Alessandra somehow knew, came into play somehow - he wasn’t entirely sure - and was supposed to be his means of communication, though every time he asked, he was replied to with “I don’t know,” or, “I can’t tell you yet.” For Finnick, no time was the right time to tell Elder anything. He knew that he was supposed to be going somewhere, but not where, or when, with who, or how. Everything in his life got a question mark added at the end.
So, when Elder had been greeted by Finnick with a, “it’s time,” he’d taken immediate leave, citing family reasons. It was then that he learned Alessandra’s location - District 13, as if circumstances could become any more ridiculous. His girlfriend, who he had not seen since November, was in District 13, the site of the rebels, preparing to deliver a child that would ruin their careers and lives if its existence was discovered. He could hardly believe it. As he rode in the train to the edge of 12, he thought about Alessandra and her beautiful dresses, the way she laughed over dinner, the feeling of her bare body pressed to his under the sheets. All of that felt foreign, like he’d seen in one of her soaps instead of experiencing it directly. Before, he’d spent a decade apart from her and it felt like a second hadn’t passed. It had been 6 months this time, but so much had changed. Nothing was the same.
From 12, a vehicle took them to the entrance of 13. Finnick was supposed to accompany him, but other obligations had tied up his schedule. Elder felt his stomach tighten as he entered, the car lowering on a set platform. As soon as the car touched the ground again, his door was open and he stepped out. ”Where is she?” he asked. ”In the hospital, Elder, but-“ Elder turned around, cutting him off as he walked away. He had no directions, but he figured that he would find his own way. He turned down corridors, following signs on the wall until he found the sterile smelling unit, more utilitarian and barren than the rest of the complex. Elder found what he assumed to be the main desk. He opened his mouth to ask for Alessandra’s room number, but stopped immediately when he saw a bed being whisked down the hall, doctors on either side, a pale form in it, a mop of red hair the only colorful thing in sight. Alessandra. His heart stopped then immediately started hammering. ”Alessandra!” he called, jogging up to the bed. A hand dangled off the side. Their fingers met, and then their eyes. ”Aless,” he said, stopping in his tracks. The bed then hurried down the hall, and there were 3 large men, all smaller than Elder, surrounding him and telling him to stay back and giving him orders. Instead of listening, all of his focus was on the bed as it went through two doors that swung once, twice, and then remained shut.

On an operating table looking down at her swollen stomach. She was going to protect The Capitol, die protecting it if need be. And then she met Elder and screw The Capitol. For that matter, screw the rebels. Screw them all and their war and their pain and their anger. What about her? What about Elder? What about their baby? She wasn't ready to die, didn't want to die. [break][break] "I have news," the same doctor came in. He looked at her and breathed behind the mask that covered half of his face. "We can save you."[break][break] Aless stared at him and held her breath. She was waiting for the drop, the sacrifice, the other side of the good news that she knew lived behind it. [break][break] "But, we would have to abort the baby. He's... fully matured, but like I said: There's a ten percent chance of you dying if we perform this operation. But if we abort, you may very well live to see tomorrow."[break][break] His words hit her like a brick. Her or the baby. This couldn't be real, this couldn't be happening. Aless began to breath faster, heavier, but no matter how deep or fast she breathed, she couldn't seem to get enough air. The doctor began to speak to her quickly, but his words warped and soon, so did everything around her. The room spun and her reality seemed to shrink into a pinhole. [break][break] --- [break][break] The Doctor walked out the double doors and approached Elder Sorrel. "Ms. Hailstone is unable to give us a decision and when she had first arrived here, she signed a document that stated you had the right to make any and all decisions concerning her and the baby's life. So I'm going to tell you the same thing I told her. If we deliver this baby, she will most likely die in the process. But we can abort this baby while it's still inside her and therefore save her life. But I also have to tell you something that I... well. She has cancers in her body and she's progressed too far. We have treatments for cancers, but she gave us no indication that she had ever started treatment in the Capitol. It's as if she had no idea that she had cancer at all. So even if she makes it through delivery, the rest of her life will be battling this cancer and based on the cancer's progression, there's no guarantee. It's your decision."[break][break] The doctor knew he should have told Alessandra about it, about everything. But she was too far and her chances were so small, he knew for sure that she would die, one way or another. Death had it in for her. [break][break] [break][break] [attr="class","petitnotes"]

When the double doors swung open, Elder was on his feet instantly. He’d been made to sit in one of the hard plastic chairs in the small gray room. There were no windows, no colors or patterns, no tabloids across the table. Just him and the double doors. His eyes were trained on them carefully. Elder could be patient. He was a Peacekeeper. He told himself that it was just another long shift, another day at the patrol. Nothing more than that. But his hands trembled and he couldn’t sit still. He fiddled with his hands, crossed and uncrossed his legs, stood up, sat down, switched chairs, but his eyes never left the doors. Finally, a product of his waiting was produced. Elder jolted upwards.
In a few strides, he’d crossed the floor to meet the doctor. Before he could speak, the doctor started. As he spoke, Elder’s face contorted into a mask of horror. It was like the doctor had cracked upon his nightmares and pulled the worst possible things from it. He couldn’t speak. There was a mistake, surely. Alessandra was fine - she had to be. Before the pregnancy, at least, she was in fantastic physical condition. All Peacekeepers had to be - it was part of the job. Really, very, very few Peacekeepers died of illness. Most either took bullets or passed of old age after retirement. Alessandra should have been the same.
Elder blinked at the doctor, feeling like the room around them was moving in slow motion. As a Peacekeeper, with a gun in hand, he could control most things. He was ranked. He could move and command and give orders. If he so desired it, he could make things change easily on a mission. But not here. He was completely and utterly powerless. Aless had given him the authority here, but another thing she hadn’t known, he supposed, was just how weak he really was. He could feel his heart rate climbing rapidly and his breathing speed up. Mr. Sorrel?” the doctor said, ”this is urgent. I understand this is very difficult, but I require an answer now if you have any hope of either living.” Elder took a deep breath, but it did nothing to calm him. His heart roared and his mind raced.
——————
After the loud, shrill sound of the buzzer, Elder shot off. He ran up to the table, grabbing the nearest gun. He clipped a magazine in, then stepped around the table, turning the safety off and placing it into position as he moved. He stopped in front of the first target, then began to fire.
At the end of it, there was a beautiful number on the clock. 1:59:02. He’d broken two minutes for his drill, and his spot in his class for the particular drill advanced to first. Elder watched as the previous occupant of the slot, Alessandra Hailstone, was bumped down to second.
He was eating lunch when he first saw her for the first time - really saw her. Of course, he’d noticed her in passing before, but he’d never really considered her. After waiting for a moment, he stood and walked over, sitting at the empty seat across from her. ”I noticed you switch position each time you move a target,” he said, looking up from his tray to see her, ”If you started between two, it’d cut your time.” When she looked up at him, the look on her face carved out a crooked grin on his.
——
At the old quarry, Elder sat beside Aless. There, the wind blew the dust up from the mined rock across the landscape, but it also blew through his hair. It was a peaceful place. His favorite in the whole district, and, in a massive gesture of trust, he’d brought Alessandra to it. Elder smiled into the setting sun. The rock which they sat on still emitted heat from a day under the scorching sky, but the air around them was nothing more than pleasantly warm. They talked and talked and talked about everything - the academy, Peacekeeping, District 2, The Capitol, and their lives. They talked until the sun set, leaving only stars above them. As the heat departed, too, he found himself inching closer and closer to her and finally - likely in exasperation - Alessandra leaned over and kissed him.
— —
Alessandra sat beside him at the dinner table, laughing at one of his father’s miserable jokes. Under the table, he squeezed her hand.
— —
On a Friday night after a long day at the Academy, she pulled him from the locker room out of the building and into the streets. It didn’t take long for them to find a party. There, there was fun, beer, and, most importantly, her.
— —
As the final examinations approached, Elder and Alessandra trained through the evenings to prepare themselves. He joked in his critiques. They pushed each other further. Offered reassurance. Encouragement. They could do this.
— —
Elder watched as Alessandra left the Academy, angered. The doors swung closed behind her. The gold medallion hanging round his neck felt heavy, but also light. Heavy, like it was weighing him down. Light, because he knew how little it meant and how he would have gladly traded it if it meant having Alessandra instead.
— —
Elder stood in the coffee shop, his pupils wide and heart beating fast as he saw her again. She was beautiful, he thought, even lovelier than I remember. And, soon, she was his again.
——————
Elder looked up at the doctor, tears brimming in his eyes. The pictures still danced behind his eyes, playing out in his mind, searing his soul. He knew what he had to do at last. There were no good options. They all hurt. None were ideal. None held any promise of any life. Only maybes and chances. But, in his mind, there was still a right choice.
When he opened his mouth to speak, his words were gravely. ”Do whatever you have to do to save her.”

Regardless of his decision, they would have to operate on her. The doctor came back, his steps brisk and his hands moved with precise intent. He didn't think that Mr. Sorrel was thinking properly when he made the decision. Who would choose to save a dying woman over a baby who had a higher chance to live? He was only going to kill them both, first the baby, then Alessandra whenever the cancers became too strong for her. The doctor sighed, it wasn't his decision to make and he'd agreed to do everything he could to save the woman, just as Mr. Sorrel had asked. [break][break] "Abort it," the doctor said. He couldn't say baby. Babies were rare in District 13. Ever since the epidemic that made most of them infertile, babies became more special because they became less likely to happen. And here was a couple who had a healthy baby and was going to kill it. [break][break] It took longer than expected since the baby- it- was fully developed. It made him to his stomach. He looked at Alessandra's face, she looked so innocent sleeping. He wondered what she would do when she woke up and found out that Mr. Sorrel, the man she'd trusted to make decisions for her life, chose to save her and not the baby. [break][break] The doctor had never had to deal with cancers that were this far. They'd always caught them right before they came up or right after. Never when the patient was destined to already die. He shook his head, how was it possible she nor the Capitol knew? Perhaps... maybe... The capitol did not. They'd have to have known. He knew for a fact that all Peacekeepers had yearly full body exams. [break][break] Alessandra was already going to be in pain for the abortion, her body would already be weak. Too weak to fight off late stage cancer. "Prepare the radiation," the Doctor instructed. [break][break] --- [break][break] Aless awoke from a dreamless sleep. It was dark in the room, but she saw faint light and beeping coming from machines. Her hand reached to her stomach, it was far smaller. The baby. Where was her baby? But before she could say anything, she was pulled back into sleep. For hours, she fought to wake and the drugs brought her back to sleep. Back and forth. Push and pull. She had no idea how long she was asleep for, all she knew was that she didn't want to be asleep anymore. [break][break] Finally, she opened her eyes. It took a few moments for her to be able to look around, but everything was still hazy. [break][break] "Elder..." she said weakly. [break][break] [attr="class","petitnotes"]

Elder sat beside Alessandra’s bed, his head resting in his hands which rested on his knees. The machines beeped quietly along in the background. At first, he’d watched them, but after a while he had to pull his eyes away. They would not bring him anything but worry and anxiety. Once they had brought her back from the operation, the doctor had informed him that she should rest alone, that a nurse would come to get Elder when (though it almost sounded like an if) Aless woke up. Elder had told the doctor immediately that it wouldn’t be an issue, because he was definitely going to be staying with Alessandra, that they could try to stop him if they liked but that it was his full intent. There hadn’t been another exchange.
He sat beside her bed, as still and quiet as a mouse. His breathing was quiet, controlled, and he did not get up from his seat once in fear of somehow disturbing her. His training came in handy. Elder could be endlessly patient, or at least he had thought so. Each second felt like an hour, each hour a new millennia. Elder watched her chest rise and fall, her eyes flicker behind their lids every so often. It was his own personal hell, crafted just for his torment.
He had fought against rebellion in the Districts for the Capitol. With a gun in his hands, he could sweep a battlefield, knock out the enemy without breaking a sweat. And he fully intended to do just the same with whatever was attacking Alessandra. He’d rain down on everything with the full determination for her to live, for her to make it through this. She had to, there was not another outcome. Elder had already made the first sacrifice. It could not be in vain.
—
The second Alessandra stirred, Elder was aware. Somehow, her first word was his name. ”Alessandra,” he breathed, reaching forward to take her hand, somehow finding flesh under the mess of needles and cords and tape. Tears burned in his eyes. She sounded so weak and defeated. ”Aless, hey,” he said again, forcing his breathing into a regular pattern. ”I’m so, so sorry I couldn’t be here earlier, but I’m here now.” She looked terrible, and for the first time, the news sounded real. The diagnosis had felt foreign, like it was about someone else. Now, though, he could see it. Alessandra was so sick, so reduced. She looked nothing like the woman he’d found in the coffee shop that day in the Capitol. All he could do for right now, though, was to love her and hope for the best. Words: 500 Tags: @alessandra

She choked down tears, pulling him closer to her so that she could wrap her arms around him. [break][break] She had to be okay, for his sake. The baby was both of them, a mixture of what she hoped was their best qualities. But she refused to look down at her empty stomach with nothing to show for it. A fully matured babe who couldn't make it because of her weak body. She knew they would tell her there was nothing she could have done. She was ridden with cancer too late in the stage to save the baby and her. They hadn't cut into her, that she could feel. But they'd done something inside her, something that ached and hurt badly. Aless tried not to think about it, she couldn't think about it. This was part of their Peacekeeper training. The more you think about the bad things, the more it'll eat you up inside until all that's left inside is fear and hate. But this wasn't her decision. This was his. [break][break] She squeezed him tighter, forcing herself to stop thinking about it. To stop thinking about what could have been, should have been, and who was right. There was no right, she told herself. There was only her and him. They would have another chance. Maybe. [break][break] "I love you."[break][break] [attr="class","petitnotes"]

There were a million things that Elder could have apologized for. Alessandra had been dealt a horrific hand. So much was wrong that Elder struggled to find what was right. If there was anything, it was the glint of life she clung to, visible in her eyes. Aless was a fighter. She wouldn’t leave this Earth without putting in more effort to stay than she’d ever given in her life.
Even in this moment, she was working for others. It could be seen in the way she whispered comforts, managed a smile, and attempted to pull Elder in. He went to her very willingly as he tried to ignore just how little strength was left in her arms. He moved from his small plastic chair to sit beside her on the hospital’s bed. Now, her form was so much smaller, eaten away at by sickness and pregnancy.
But there was still warmth in her body, there was still life. Elder could feel her squeezing him, could hear her breath. For now, that was enough. He chose to believe that she would improve, that their lives would resume and they could remain together. Really, there was no other possible outcome for Elder. Aless would get better. They would have many more years together. Nothing else mattered.
”I love you too,” Elder whispered, his voice sounding like a prayer. He pulled away gently, wanting to see her face and look into her eyes. Elder raised a hand to cup her cheek. He breathed out a laugh, shaking his head a bit at himself. ”I never thought I’d say that I could hold the whole world in my hand, Aless,” he said. And, in many ways, what he said was true. Aless was the whole world - his whole world, anyway. With her, he’d made his life be worth something. He always assumed while in training that Peacekeeping would be fulfilling, his life’s work and his mission to complete. For a while, he’d contented himself with that. Once Elder met Aless, though, he’d learned that things - jobs, hobbies, items - they were merely poor substitutes for what truly mattered: other people. Loving Alessandra taught him that. There was still so much to learn, too.
