Lucas entered into the apartment still wearing the costume from the Tribute parade. An woman with her face covered up stood at the kitchen with her head down. "Hey, uhhh, do you know where @syd is?" he asked her as he walked close. Her only response was a shake of the head. The woman didn't even bother to look up. Lucas's brows furrowed, he was about to ask her why she never spoke, but then thought better of it. He didn't know the customs here and if he was right, then she was probably an Avox. He felt sorry for her and wanted to talk to her, she probably didn't have anyone to talk to. But if he remembered correctly, Avox's couldn't speak. Turning around, he grabbed a cold glass of water from the fridge and walked to what looked like the living room.
The couch was plush and everything in the room was decorated extravagantly. He sighed, immediately missing his little sister and brothers, and even his dad. His bare back leaned against the velvet couch. Closing his eyes, he allowed his head to roll back on the head of the couch and his mask to fall over his face.

Johanna had come back from a night of drinking in a bar by herself. She had gotten a message from President Snow about his "final offer" for her prostituting herself in the Capitol. She was so tired of him, and she had set fire to the message after her solo session of drinking. She wasn't drunk, but she was more upset. Johanna ignored President Snow as much as possible, but she knew that they would have to confront each other soon. He was a monster, and she knew that he would take drastic measures to get her to be his puppet. Johanna wouldn't give in though--no matter what he tried to do to her. There was nothing worse than selling herself out to a bunch of empty-headed freaks. The eighteen-year-old may have been pretty, but she wasn't dumb or weak. She walked back to the apartments, a bit tipsy but not wholly drunk, thinking about everything she had on her plate. She just wished that her family was safe in the Victors' Village. Of course they were--she had nothing to worry about with them. Johanna knew that President Snow was a monster, but she knew that he wouldn't touch her family or she would kick his ass. She had entered the lobby as she lighted a cigarette. Johanna had to become less stressful if she was going to help Lucas live. The last thing she wanted to do was stress him out, especially with all of the weight on his shoulders with the Games and all. Running her hands through her hair, she walked into the elevator and pressed 7. She quickly wiped the water in her eyes, even if her makeup did smear just a bit. The strong girl rarely cried, as the stress may have been getting to her, but she knew that crying or tearing up wasn't an option. Weakness wasn't an option. Johanna figured that if she acted weak, then people might underestimate her sanity. She couldn't have that because they would make a big deal of it in the tabloids. She wanted to tell the paparazzi to screw off every time she saw them, but she kept her mouth shut. She entered the loft and saw Lucas sitting on the couch. He looked asleep since his eyes were closed, so she didn't wake him up. To the girl's luck, she knocked into a stool and knocked it down. Cursing under her breath, she picked it up. "Sorry," she said after she cursed. Johanna rarely apologized, but she felt like she was interrupting. She didn't want to seem drunk because it was a weakness, but she figured that she had already gave herself away.

Lucas's breathing had slowed and his mind began to swirl into a dream. He felt his body ease as his dream pulled him in deeper and deeper into its mist. A noise pulled him out of the dream, jolting him into reality. Lucas's eyes opened as his body sat up and turned towards the noise. Pulling his mask up above his head, he saw Johanna Mason. He smiled slightly, "I was just looking for you." Lucas stood up and walked towards her. "I didn't see you after the Tribute Parade," he stated, though not wanting to seem like he wanted her to be with him at all times. She was after all, just his mentor. Not his babysitter or anything. That's what his Escort was for he supposed. Upon nearing her, he saw her make-up was smeared and the smell of booze was evident, though not strong. He frowned slightly.
"Are you okay?" he asked after deciding that was the best thing to say out of a slew of other sentences he had come up with in his head. Somehow the words 'why do you do this to yourself' didn't sound like a great way to start a conversation. Pulling a chair with green cushion, he set it down beside her. "Wanna sit down?" He asked, refraining from saying that she didn't look well. His escort had told him that wasn't a very polite thing to say to a lady. Lucas pulled up the cloth of his costume and sat down on a stool.

Johanna had known when Lucas asked if she wanted to sit down, he knew that she had to be slightly drunk. She had given herself away, and that was the last thing both of them needed. She had tucked her dark hair behind her ear. Why did she have to f*ck up everything? She didn't mean to, but she did it anyways. Somehow she made Snow mad. Somehow she was a horrible mentor. Somehow she would probably kill her own tributes in the arena. It was always so frustrating to the young victor. Without doing anything, she seemed to screw up everything.
"No, I don't need a seat. I'm fine, thank you," she said to the tribute. She probably would be better off if she sat down and drank some water, but she knew that if she succumbed, she would be in a position of weakness. To Johanna, looking weak was probably her biggest fear because she knew that if she acted weak, Snow would take advantage of her weakness and use it against her. It was something that she had hidden since she became the 71st victor. "You were great in the parade," she commented to him. "I could see that a lot of people took your liking to your costume, or at least that's what I saw on the television. Your costume looked great, by the way." Her words were slightly slurred, but not to the point where someone couldn't understand her. Johanna didn't answer his question of why she wasn't there, but she had given him advice before and she figured that that was enough. Being at the local bar definitely wasn't a good thing to tell the tribute.
The girl walked over to the couch and sat down there. "You should probably get some rest. There's a big day of training tomorrow. I apologize if I woke you up. I should have been quieter." Johanna didn't know why she was apologizing so much. She must have been drunker than she originally thought.

Lucas stood up from the chair and leaned over the table, grabbing the pitcher of water and two cups. He set one cup in front of Johanna and the other in front of him. Pouring both cups with water, he took small sips from his. He wondered if there would be water at the arena. He should probably try to hydrate as much as he could now. Going in there dehydrated and sick would only get him killed faster.
He looked down, "Yeah, I didn't see you there. Where were you?" Lucas asked. He didn't want to seem like he was prying in her business, but wasn't a mentor supposed to be there for every step of the way for their tributes? Didn't she care that he might be dead a week from now? Didn't she care about him at all? He swallowed another gulp of water, trying to reign in his questions and emotions. Perhaps it was just the fear of what was to come that was making him this way. He never cared about what other people had thought before or what they did, so why was Johanna different?
Picking up both cups, he followed Johanna to the couch. Setting the cups on the coffee table, he sat beside her, about an arms length away. "Don't be," he said looking at her as his back leaned against the cushion. "I was actually just waiting for you," he stated picking at a leaf that was attached to his forearm. "I, uhhhh," he began trying to think of the words. Should he tell her? No. That was a bad idea in itself. "Just wanted to make sure you were okay."

Johanna felt terrible mentally. She didn't mean to do this to Lucas, but she could never ignore a good drink--especially when Snow was getting on her last nerve. She knew that Lucas probably thought she was a b*tch for not being there, everyone did, but she really wanted him to live. When he had brought her water, she had smiled. He was such a nice guy, and Johanna should have tried harder to be his mentor. Unfortunately for her, she was a shitty mentor and she didn't know how to help people.
Taking a sip of her drink, she sighed. "Yeah, I'm fine. What you should be more worried about is you," she said to him. "The Games are coming up, and me mentoring you is failing. I try, I really do, but I can't seem to help anybody. You shouldn't rely on me. I'm a mess." She said, leaning back on the couch. Her head was spinning, and strangely, she wanted another drink of something strong to make the headache go away. Something always seemed to be pounding in her head, especially lately. And drinking was really the only thing that made it quieter.
She then gave a small laugh as she had a thought. "Wanna know a little secret?" she asked him, but it was a rhetorical question. Taking another sip of her water, she looked at the ceiling. "Dying isn't the worst thing a person can do," she said with a slight shrug. "There's a million other things that are worse out there. Just...don't let those pretty boys change you. Because if you let them change you, then you're completely screwed into oblivion. They'll make you their doll...one of them." Some might think Johanna was talking gibberish or the alcohol was getting to her. But to the victor, she knew her own words and what she was talking about. Whether Lucas realized what she was talking about was a mystery to her, but she hoped he understood. The games never changed her, but President Snow was trying to change her. And he might be successful if it went any further. She may be a pretty victor, but she will never whore around the Capitol.

Lucas thought about her words for a minute. He really didn't think he had a chance in winning the games. He wasn't aggressive or bloodthirsty like Jack. He was just... a guy who knew how to climb, and jump, and weild axes. The only thing he'd ever hit with axes were wood. He couldn't possibly use it on people. How could he? He wanted to tell her these things. He wanted Johanna to know that he most likely wouldn't make it out of this alive. His lips remained closed, unable to say the words that meant they'd never see each other again. "You're fine," he said looking down. "It's going to be okay." He tried to convince her, and himself. Though he wasn't sure how well it was working.
"I don't want to die," he said as his eyes wandered around the room, unable to meet hers. "I don't know what could be worse than dying," Lucas didn't understand what she meant. Maybe he was too naive. But he was sure that Johanna was suffering from it. "I think... If I had something to live for, it wouldn't be that bad. My sister, my whole family and..." he looked away. He was being a sappy little boy. They hadn't even known each other a week and there he was feeling things for her that he'd never felt with anyone else. It was stupid and he knew it. But no matter how much his brain said not to, his heart kept on pushing it. "...you."

Johanna, for once in her life, didn't know what to say. She had never experienced love or even crushes before, as most people thought of her as a threat and didn't want to get close to her. The only people she really loves is her family, and she sometimes thinks that they're threats again. She forgets sometimes that Lucas is her age and she isn't older because of her superiority. Besides, she did tell him that he was attractive on multiple occasions without even thinking anything of it. And now that this man, who she has only known for less than a week, says that he cares about her on a level that he cares of both of his family and sister. Johanna didn't know how she felt, and yet she was drunk. Drinking and emotions never mixed well together, but she was sober enough to know what was going on.
The dark-haired girl scooted next to him and nodded. "You have everything to live for, you know. A future that entails greatness and love and kindness." Maybe Johanna was stupid to actually do this, but she did it for Lucas. The poor boy from 7 was probably going to die, and Johanna didn't want that at all. She wanted him to live so badly. "All you have to do is win the Games, and when you come home, you'll have everything," she said. It was true, as she had experienced it herself.
With a sigh, Johanna rested her head against the blond tribute's shoulder. "What are we going to do?" she said as she closed her eyes. She didn't know what she was going to do about everything going on, and this involved Lucas as well...whatever "this" was. Johanna opened her eyes and looked down. She had never had anyone have a crush on her before except the rats in the wretched Capitol, so it was so foreign to her. What was she suppose to do? Oh well. She hoped she was doing okay, at least.

There was longing in Lucas that wanted to just be let out, like it had been stuck in a windowless cell. The air inside him felt stale and he wanted so badly to breathe in something new, something fresh, something different than anything he had ever known or experienced before. Boy, did he have bad timing. Why couldn't he have met Johanna Mason before the reaping? Why couldn't they have met when they were children? Why did he have to be chosen to be a tribute? Lucas felt as if all this was fate's cruel way of punishing for some reason he himself did not know or understand. What had he done in his life that was so bad as to deserve such an unfortunate even happen? It seemed like every woman in his life didn't stay long. Not his mother, not Johanna, and neither would his sister. They would remain, but he would not.
He watched her as she spoke, almost believing her words. Everything? He doubted it. What would he be if he won? Especially if he won with blood in his hands. Of course he'd have to kill, sooner or later. It was bound to happen. Even if he went the entire game without killing anyone and it was just him and someone else, he'd have to kill them. Unless... Well. There was no unless. He would have to. Why should their lives be more important than his? But then he thought about about little Sahalie and Serena. And the two lovers from District 12 who tried to keep their relationship a secret. But everyone knew what was going on between them. It was so clear. And they were so tragic. What were the odds? He almost scoffed remember the famous lines that everyone seemed to repeat to him everyday may the odds be ever in your favor. The odds were never in their favor. "I could have everything if I won, but what about my soul?" he asked looking deep into her eyes searching for an answer. "Would I still have that?" Lucas tried to see if she would lie to him, he hoped she wouldn't. But he wouldn't blame her if she did. She wanted him to win, they both knew that.
When Johanna rested her head on his shoulders, he didn't move. It seemed almost like a dream, like this really wasn't happening. Maybe it was a dream. A week from now when he's in the arena, everything in this life, right now and anything before would have been a dream. His life, from that point on was mere survival. He looked down at Johanna's face, wondering if that was the right thing to do. Or if remembering the people here and in District 7 would give him strength and courage to carry on. But he had very high doubts that he would survive. He saw what the other tributes from the career districts looked like. And from the look of it, District 4 was his biggest problem. Both Kailani and Jack seemed like formidable opponents. Not just that, but they seemed to have some fire in them that thirsted not just for survival, but for victory. He wondered if anyone from their district ever thought about the possibility that they could die in the games. It was doubtful considering they would volunteer every year.
His arm wrapped around Johanna's shoulder. Her skin was warm against his. Allowing himself to continue further, he opened up the palm of his hand and let it rest on her arm. Johannas skin was soft against the rough texture of his calloused hand. He hoped that she wouldn't pull away from his touch, but he wouldn't blame her if she did. It seemed like Lucas couldn't hate her for anything. Even if she yelled at him right now and cursed him out, he couldn't hate her. He wondered about her question. Lucas wasn't sure if she was talking about "we" in the general sense, or "we" in an emotional sense. And if it was emotional, then did that mean Johanna felt the same way about him? He tried to push it out of his mind. How childish of him to even think about such a thing when he was so close to death. It wasn't fair. It most especially wasn't fair to her. No. He couldn't do that to her. It was too painful to even think about. He remembered the tears on his sister's cheek, remembered the painful sound of her cries when he had to leave. It was heartbreaking. He couldn't put her through that. He could kick himself for being so stupid. First he tells her that he cared for her and now... Lucas was lost in his own mind, he felt sick about. Why couldn't she have just ignored him? Why couldn't she have just yelled at him and stormed out? Any of those options would have been great. But this... This was what he wanted and he hated himself for it.
Lucas pulled her in close, "I might not make it. But it's okay." He licked at his lips before biting them. Loosening his arms around her, he looked down. His hand went up to her face and moved strands of stray hair behind her ears. She was broken and he knew it. He could see it in her eyes. But still, he thought she was the most beautiful woman he'd ever laid eyes on. Fate was cruel.
Lucas wanted nothing more than to just hold her tightly and lay on that couch forever with her. "I just want you to get better, but I know it's asking a lot," he said, hoping that she wouldn't take offense to it. It didn't take a mind reader to know that Johanna Mason had some deep seated issues. Sitting up, he looked at her square in the face. "Ummmm. There's something I need to tell you," he said. It was probably the last thing she wanted to hear, but he thought he had to tell her anyways.

Johanna didn't know what to do, and to be honest, she never knew what to do. This man, Lucas, had held her. She felt his rough touch on her arm, and she just laid beside him. Though his hands were rough, his touch was gentle against her smooth skin. The dark-haired victor had never been held like this before, and she didn't want it to end. She knew that she should go back to her room and only let in Lucas if he had any questions, but she didn't want to be let go. Being a lonely girl who pushed everyone away was so easy for her, and this was so hard. She had really cared about him, but she didn't know how to react. She felt vulnerable--weak, especially in a time of stress. There was stress for both of them, and she wondered how this even got this way. Was it something she said for him to like her? Was it her actions? Or maybe it was pity. She didn't know, but she didn't care either. She just didn't want this moment to end.
When he had asked her about his soul remaining, she sighed. "That is up to you. It is whether you are strong enough to remain sane or weak enough to succumb to the insanity. Winning or not, you want to stay true to yourself as much as possible or the world will eat you up," she said looking up at him. Her lips parted slightly as she took a deep breath. Why had this had to happen? When she was in her time of need and he was so desperate to live? This had been the worst timing of anything she had ever had before. She didn't know how she felt about Lucas, but it might have been obvious to others. She was confused--something that rarely happened. Confusion was something she never struggled with because she always knew what to do and had a plan. Now, she really didn't know how to act or how to respond except to sit here with him and let him hold her. Johanna didn't want to hurt him, and she knew being close to him was hurting both of them. Chances were that Lucas was going to die in the arena and Johanna was going to move on. But she didn't want that to happen. She never wanted that to happen. She just wanted to stay with Lucas physically and mentally. She wanted him to win more than she wanted to win herself in her games.
When he had commented on not making it, Johanna closed her lips. She didn't have anything to say about that, and she didn't want to lie to him and tell him everything was going to be okay. It was so obvious that everything was not okay. She was shaking and trembling as she always had at night and especially when she was drinking. At night, Johanna was so scared of her own mind and her own emotions. Crying had been a big part of her sleeping routine whether she had nightmares or couldn't sleep. She had to be strong during the day, and it was so exhausting for her. She had become so weak because she had put so much effort into being strong, and it was so hard to stay strong with Lucas. Johanna felt safe around him, and that might be her biggest downfall.
In her mind, asking her to get better was like saying that she had to be happy when in the presence of President Snow. She couldn't. Getting better would mean succumbing to the white-haired overlord who scared her so much. He had appeared in her nightmares frequently, and he was her biggest fear. Snow knew her weakness when she didn't even know her own. He could read her so well and knew everything about her. He knew more about herself than she knew. It was so scary because at any moment, he could use something against her and she would lose her confidence. She had to stay confident because if she didn't, she might be one of Snow's puppets by now. "Yeah, I'll try my best." Johanna had said that, but she was so tired. So tired of putting forth effort to try and stay strong. Try to not drink and smoke and tremble. But he didn't understand. When nobody was there for her, alcohol was there for her. It made her forget about her problems and everything she was. It was an escape for her, and she knew every victor had some sort of an escape. Whether it was family or morphling, it was there when nothing else was.
Johanna didn't really talk much, but when he had mentioned that he needed to tell her something, she didn't really know how to respond. Maybe he had a girlfriend, but that didn't matter to her. Maybe he didn't like her the way she thought he did, and that would be awkward and scary for her. She didn't want to worry about the bad side. She had already had enough bad things going on in her life. "If it's bad, I don't care. It isn't important," she told him quietly. She really didn't. She didn't want to know the bad stuff since that wouldn't be important. "I can't think of the bad things right now Lucas. If it's important enough for me to know, then tell me. But if it's something small and bad, I just...I'm sorry," she said, closing her eyes as she hid her green eyes. Feeling his fingers brush against her face as he moved her hair, she didn't want to think about Snow or death or nightmares. This was just something she wanted--no, needed--to last. This was the one time she was happy when she was at the Games, and she just wanted to stay with him. Even if it was just for tonight. She didn't want any space between them, because she knew the second he let her go, things would be so incredibly different. Whether it was good or bad, she didn't know.

He looked down, nodding slightly. True to himself, she had said. If that was the case, then he knew he could never kill anyone. That was the truth. If he did, it would destroy him. Even if he somehow won the games and went back to his family, he might be grateful to have them, but the blood on his hands would never wash off. The memory would never disappear and he'd probably go to sleep every day with their faces haunting his dreams, and probably every moment of his life thereafter. He finally realized what happened to Johanna. If he already knew that would happen to him, then that's likely what happened to Johanna, too. He wondered what she was like before the games. If they had met before she went into the arena, would she be a different person now? All the what ifs made Lucas's head hurt. There was no point in wondering any of that. Lucas looked down at the brown haired girl who had somehow won his heart without even doing a single thing. Odd how things worked that way. It didn't take a genius to know how Johanna tried to handle the issues in her life. He worried that one day she'd go so far down and lose herself so much that she would die from it, or kill herself because of it. "I don't know what you're going through, I can't even pretend to know. But I have sort of a good visual," he said considering that it's a great fear or his in facing the games, "but just remember that no matter what lies behind you, you still have people who care about you now and always will. Just don't forget that."Johanna seemed worried about something, but Lucas didn't know what. He figured it was something he had said, or maybe the way he said it. "No, it's not bad. I mean... It could be. But I think you need to know," he took a deep breath, hoping that Johanna wouldn't get upset. "Please, don't hate me for this. But... I've made an alliance with Sahalie," he stated wondering if she would understand why he did so. He hadn't known her but a day, but just seeing a little girl in the games, helpless and afraid pulled something in his stomach that made him sick to his stomach and weak at the same time. He couldn't allow her to go in the games by herself with no one to protect her. And if it came down to it, he already knew what he would do. There was no question about that. He only hoped that Johanna wouldn't hate him for it, or hurt her too much. If he was in her shoes, he would want Johanna to live. To be selfish and choose herself over others because in truth, Lucas would be too selfish to ever let her go no matter what. She was the most broken person in his life and somehow, the strongest thing that kept him grounded.

All Johanna wanted to do was skip the games. Sometimes, she wished that she had never won. It was painful for what she had to do. She had to train tributes that would ultimately die. She was judged by how her tributes did even if they had zero chance of winning in the first place. She had been stuck in this position, and she had a feeling that she would always be stuck in the same routine. She wanted Lucas to win so badly. It was selfish of her, yes, but she didn't care. She just wanted him to live. She didn't care if he changed or if he did something bad in the games. She just wanted him to come out victorious so she didn't have to be alone. Johanna needed someone other than her family. But she couldn't be too attached. Lucas was up against 23 other tributes, and odds were that he wasn't going to make it. Why she felt this attraction towards the blond tribute, she didn't know. Maybe it was because he was the first guy that actually cared for her. Maybe it was because of the desperation she needed. Whatever it was, she didn't care. She liked this guy, and it would be hard for her to let him go.
Johanna sighed when he said that people cared for her. If he was saying that about her mother, father and four brothers, she guessed he was right. They did care for her, and they were always there for her (ooc: not for long! >:]). Maybe everything would turn out okay. Maybe President Snow would stop harassing her and Lucas would live and everything would be alright. But Johanna knew better. She knew something would go wrong, and whatever it was, it was not going to be good.
When Lucas had mentioned him being allied with some girl, she barely turned her head. She was on her own in the games, but if he thought that it would be better to be with someone, she didn't stop him. "As long as she isn't a Career, I'm okay with that. But don't die for her, okay? Don't sacrifice yourself for anyone. Fight all the way through. I know you can," she said with a small smile. Johanna may have sounded selfish, but she wanted to tell him anyways. Allies might have been a smart idea, but dying for them was not.
Johanna closed her eyes and sighed. "I will tell you what is going on if you promise not to tell anyone," she said to him. She hadn't told anyone, and she figured that he would be a good person to tell. She looked down at her shaking hands. She needed another drink. The alcoholism was getting to her. "Snow wants me to give my body up to the Capitol," she told him, a bit embarrassed. "I keep putting him off, but he sent me a letter this evening that stated that this was his final warning. I don't know what that means, but it's hard to keep it off of my mind. Snow is a threatening man, and I don't trust him one bit. I just hopes he doesn't do anything too dramatic." She had told Lucas. It was finally out of her system. To her, it was hard to even talk about it. Selling herself to the Capitol? She already sold her soul to the world. But getting it out was something she needed to do, and she was glad to do it.

Lucas gave Johanna a weak smile. He wasn't sure if he could. The most he could hope for was that the Careers would piss each other off and kill themselves, saving him and the other tributes the need to do so. Perhaps he'd just try to hide out. It was the cowardly thing to do, but it was the best way to not get killed. "I... I can't promise you anything," he said solemnly. "I want to come back, but I don't think I could live with myself if I had a chance to save her and didn't." Lucas's head dropped onto her shoulder, feeling almost defeated. "I don't want to see her in my nightmares. It's too much guilt for me to bear."
He listened to her, her words seeping slowly into his mind. He sat up straight and faced her, "Of course. I won't say a thing." As he listened, he felt his body tense. His hands turned into fists and his jaw pressed together tightly, gritting his teeth. He shook his head as he stood up, walking away from her and the couch. His fists shook, the veins on his arms bulged. He wanted to punch something, anything. He wanted to destroy things, but he tried his hardest to just hold it all in. It was more difficult that he expected. Lucas walked towards the glass doors that lead to the balcony. He pulled it open so hard that the door broke, the glass shattered on the floor in pieces. His hands gripped the rail tightly as he leaned over. The cool wind helping to cool him off, though he still felt like trying to pull the rails off the wall and throwing it as far as he could. Snow. He wanted to kill him. If he could, he would walk to his mansion right now and strangle him in his sleep. He'd never, ever thought about killing anyone but now, he could think of at least a hundred ways to kill President Snow.

Johanna watched Lucas go outside. She shook her head and bit her lip. She knew that she shouldn't have told Lucas. This was her fault. He was so stressed about the Games and the fear of dying, and she had to make matters worse as she always did. Why did she have to be so uncharasmatic? She was always so bad at, and she wished that she didn't have to impact people's emotions so much. In one night, she had gone from lonely and drunk to comfortable and secure. She had got up from the couch and looked towards the one thing she liked. Walking to the kitchen, she grabbed two glasses and a bottle of wine. Pouring the dark liquid into the the glasses, she followed Lucas onto the balcony. Her lips were slightly parted as she drank out of her glass.
She sighed and looked out towards the loud Capitol. "I can handle it myself, you know. There's no need to get upset over it. You already have so much on your plate, the last thing I want you to worry about is me," she said to him as she looked over the balcony. She felt bad for him. It seemed as if he had an extreme amount of bad luck. She hoped that it wouldn't carry on in the games. "You're going to do fine, Lucas. I know you will. I tell the truth, and I wouldn't be surprised if you made it to the top three. But if it comes down to you and your ally...it takes courage to see your family again." But Johanna herself was selfish. She wanted him to win the whole thing, and she would do whatever it took to help him.

He shook his head. "I don't want you to give him what he wants. But... I don't know what to do to help you," he said gripping the banister. Lucas had no idea of the politics of The Capitol. He didn't know how far President Snow would go to get what he wanted. In truth, Lucas was pretty oblivious to anything beyond District 7. He wanted to go home, more than anything he just wanted life to go back to normal.
"I'm..." he stopped, refraining himself from really saying what he was feeling. He was scared as all hell. And nothing anyone said or did would stop him from having the fear, that dread of knowing he was walking to his death. He could almost feel a sharp blade on his neck, making it nearly impossible to relax his body.
Lucas's grip loosened as he turned to Johanna. His hands reaching out towards her as he grasped the small of her waist, pulling her towards him. His head dropped down, their face mere inches from each other. Lucas stopped, he was so close to her yet that one moment seemed frozen in time for him. His stared into the dark pools of her eyes as his large hands gently glided over her back in smooth, soothing motions.

Johanna had looked at Lucas's blue eyes. She could tell that he was scared--that he was lost--and she wanted to help him. She really liked him, and even though she didn't really know what she felt for him, she knew it was positive. She could feel his touch on her waist, and she was so close to him. She had never been this close with anyone before, and it felt reassuring. She felt safe. Johanna forgot everything about Snow and all of her problems. She needed Lucas to come home. She needed him with her and needed him to stay close to her for as long as they both wanted. She wanted to be in his arms forever. Maybe this was wrong for the both of them, but she didn't care. There was something about him that she couldn't put a finger on. But whatever it was, it was amazing for her.
She wrapped her arms around him and smiled to him. They both had completely different personalities and came from different upcomings, but they were here now and that was all that mattered to the dark-haired girl. Her lips were so close to his, and she was trembling in his arms. Why? She didn't know. She wasn't scared, but maybe this change of mind had made her body feel a bit strange. She smiled at Lucas and spoke to him finally. "Don't be scared," she told him, wondering whether she should kiss him or not. She was blushing though, and her body was warmer than usual.

As Lucas held her, it seemed as if their bodies began to form and mold around each other. It liberating and suffocating at the same time. It almost felt as if they were in a room which was steadily closing in on them. His heart was rampaging inside his chest and he wasn't sure if he was having a heart attack. Then he heard her voice and all at once everything stopped. He leaned in, without even meaning to, and touched his lips to hers. His hands went up to her short dark dark, his fingers running through each strand. It wasn't the first time he'd kissed a girl before. He had done it, once, with a girl in his class when they were 10 years old. But it was so awkward between them after that he dared not try it again. But this one, this was different. Lucas drank in her soft lips and the scent of her skin that filled his senses.
Once their lips parted, he gave her a soft smile. "Even if I don't come back, I'm glad I got to do at least that," he whispered.

Johanna wasn't surprised when Lucas kissed her. She knew it was coming, and she was still extremely nervous. Her body shook in his arms, both from nerves and the lack of alcohol in this damn apartment. So when he kissed her, she had pressed her lips back. This was the first time Johanna Mason ever kissed anyone before, unless one would count the time when she was five and a kid kissed her only to have his face slapped. She moved her hands to his cheeks, feeling his soft complexion as they kissed. She them moved her hand back around his neck. She hoped Lucas wasn't f*cking around because now she would not be able to cope with the fact of his death.
Pressing her lips away she smiled. "Thank you," is what Johanna Mason said to him. There was no I can't or I love, but she wanted to thank him for everything that he had done for her, especially tonight. She wanted to thank him for feeling something she hadn't before, and maybe if he came back, they could have a relationship and be genuinely...happy. Johanna Mason was never a happy girl, but tonight, she was the happiest she had been all of her life.

Lucas pulled away slowly, his hands gently caressing her skin as he pulled them back towards him. He tried to put his hands in his pockets, but then remembered he didn't have any because he was still wearing his parade outfit. His right hand went up to his hair and pushed it back, his fingers running through blonde strands and he was thankful he didn't find a leaf still stuck in there. He looked down at his bare feet as his heart began to slow down. He could feel the pumping of blood through his veins less and less.
When he looked back up at Johanna, he smiled. Touching her cheek, he brushed it slightly with his thumb. "We should go to bed," Lucas leaned in once more and kissed her forehead gently. "I hear training is brutal," he added once his hand dropped. Lucas walked back inside the apartment and walked towards his room. He looked back at Johanna before opening the door and walking inside. Once he was in and the door was closed, he leaned his back against it, letting out a breath that he hadn't realized he was holding.
