Kaliveya had been the talk of the down for days. She had made it through the games farther than anyone had thought, which only meant that they all underestimated her. Even Echo had underestimated her. But he still blamed himself for not teaching her how to fight and for not being able to volunteer so that he could be in the Arena with her. At least she would have a better chance if he was. He knew his parents were hurting, but he couldn't bring himself to be with them. His mother and father pulled close to each other, refusing the death of their sweet daughter to break them. But Echo couldn't do that. He had too much regret, too much hate. It wouldn't be Kaliveya who would break this family apart, it would be him.
He carried a plate of strawberries as he walked towards the Justice Building. Even though the District didn't have much to offer, let alone food, they still managed to bring the Brier's food, as was customary when someone died. Unfortunately, no one in his house could eat strawberries; Kaliveya was the only one who ever ate strawberries in their house. There was only one person he knew he could think of, Madge. Anytime they'd gotten strawberries and Kaliveya couldn't eat them all, he always shared them with Madge.
It was no secret that he had a crush on her when they were younger. But that crush had turned into friendship over the years. His hatred for the Capitol and his training with the rebels that started when he was only 7 years old had numbed most of what he felt for other people. He cared only about his family, mostly Kaliveya. But now that she was gone, he only felt pain towards his family. Every time he looked at them, he saw disappointment. Not disappointment at them, but disappointment at himself. They had asked him to volunteer with Kaliveya, but he had failed. They didn't hate him, but they didn't have to. Echo hated himself. He was filled with self-loathing and left no room for love.
Echo put the strawberries on the table in front of Madge. "Went to your house, but they told me you were volunteering here today," he said. "There's no one in our house that eats strawberries anymore and we're kind of drowning in food. It's ironic isn't it? The Hunger Games." He leaned against a desk counter and looked around, sucking on the inside of his bottom lip. The last time he was in the Justice Building was when he said goodbye to Veya.

You're too old to lose it Too young to choose it And the clocks waits So patiently on your song Madge had known from the beginning that, when she saw Kaliveya was reaped, that she wasn't going to make it. She had been a few years younger than Made, around three, but she was still such a sweet girl. She would never hurt a fly, never anger someone, and try her best to make people happy. She had grown up with the Brier Family, as they were both wealthy and neither family really fit in with the lower class citizens. She hated to put it that way, but it was true. Madge had Katniss and Gale, but she couldn't rely on them to be her friends all the time. After all, they were best friends. But Gale seemed more attentive of her of the late, and she wondered if it was out of sympathy.
Echo, on the other hand, was someone she could always turn to. They were childhood friends, after all, and though they weren't as close as they were as children, she still respected him and was glad to have him around. Sometimes Veya would tag along too, and she got to know the girl pretty well. Sometimes they would play piano together, other times they would just sit and chat. Echo was her age, so the two of them had more in common, but she really enjoyed hanging out with Veya.
When she was reaped, Madge was heartbroken. She was so innocent. She didn't deserve to go into those games. In a way, Veya had always reminded her of Prim, so she hoped that, like Prim, she would be able to make it out of the games. Madge knew it was a one in a million chance, but she still had to hope for the best no matter what. She made it pretty far, a lot farther than the mayor's daughter would have imagined. But unfortunately, she couldn't make it past the Careers. They seemed to always crush any hope of a lower district tribute winning, though recently, there have been a lot of people who won--Prim and the boy from 10. It gave some of the tributes who were reaped hope, and she certainly had that hope with Veya. When she died, Madge was watching. She was absolutely crushed. She wanted to visit Echo and his family to say her condolences, but she knew that tomorrow she would have to volunteer at the Justice Building to take care of some paperwork for her father. She did that from time to time, trying to help her father since he was so busy every day of the year. She decided that she would visit after she was done with her shift.
Madge had sat for hours, filling out paperwork and checking over grammatical errors. It was a tedious job, but she didn't care. All she thought about was Veya that day. She really wished she could do something to help, but she knew that nothing would help them cope. Not food, not expensive jewels, nothing. They lost their family, and there was nothing else to gain from that. When Echo showed up at the door of the Justice Building, she was surprised. She stood up and smiled at him. He was carrying a plate of strawberries. He set them down, and started speaking about the irony of the Hunger Games. He was right, of course, but she didn't want to say anything.
The blonde girl then gave Echo a hug."I'm sorry Echo. Kaliveya was a great girl," she said to him. "I know you've probably heard it a million times now, but it's true. She was truly fantastic." And Madge meant every word of it. She felt so bad for Echo, but he was one of those people who would get right back on his feet usually. This time, though, she wasn't certain. His face turned hard, "it doesn't really matter how great she was, does it!? She still died." Echo's eyes had focused on something else, on nothing. After a moment, his eyes focused back on Madge and he realized what he was doing. He didn't want to be bitter or cold towards her. Madge was the last person that deserved the hatred that was broiling over inside him.
Echo breathed and shook his head lightly, letting go of the tension in his fingers. "I'm sorry. I... didn't mean to. It's not you. (it's me lol jk)" He pushed the strawberries towards her, "Anyways. I'll leave these with you, since you're probably busy right now." His eyes wandered over to the surface of her desk. Babies breath and wildflowers tied neatly with a huge white satin bow sat in a clear vase with water, obviously fresh and given today. "Oh. I see Gale came to see you. He's been coming around a lot hasn't he?"
It wasn't that Echo was jealous. Maybe he was. But, probably not. No. Definitely not. He and Madge were just friends, they'd always been friends. Sooner or later he knew that Madge would find a boyfriend. And of course Gale was as good as any. But... He ground his jaws tight. Gale didn't deserve her. He bit into his cheek, why was he even thinking about this? It didn't matter. He was just upset over Veya, that's all. That's all... Like she was some menial thing. That's all. Everything was simple to everyone else. That's all. People die in the games. That's all. She was only his sister. That's all.

Madge could see that Echo was angry. Unlike Echo, she always kept her emotions to herself for the sake of other people. She didn't want them to worry about her or ask what was wrong. Echo, on the other hand, was someone who expressed his emotions and discontent. She felt bad for her friend. His excuse to be angry now was more than okay, as she knew that having one of your family members killed off was hard, especially someone that was close to you. The blonde girl looked at Echo's harden look. She wished she could do something, but in the midst of everything, it was hard to do anything except grieve. She could tell that's what he had been doing.
She then looked down, listening to him. "No, don't leave," she said when he said that she was busy. "I can take a break now. They don't mind. Do you want to take a walk? Let some air out? I'm here for you." Madge was always a good listener. She loved listening to people and try to console them when they needed it. She didn't like talking about herself, so it made her the perfect person to just rant to. She liked to help people, she always had.
Her eyebrow raised when he saw the flowers on her desk. Gale had left them for her just before Echo came. Things between the two had gotten a little serious, but that wasn't on her mind now. "Yeah. Yeah, I guess," she said, thrown off guard at what he had said about Gale. He wasn't jealous, was he? No, she assumed, as she had never picked up on any romantic interest from Echo. "But that's not important now. What's important is how you're feeling. I want to help, I really do." Madge spoke softly to Echo. She tucked her blonde hair behind her ear, wanting to really help her friend that she had known for a long time. WORD COUNT: 332 TAG: @echo
