Most of the kids of District 10 grew up on a farm, or something. Their names were quaint, their families were big, and their thoughts were simple. Wait - no, uncomplicated. No malicious intent. Point is, most of them don't have names like "Dymphna." With a surname like "Skinner," her parents felt they had to make sure at least her first name could distinguish her; they hadn't actually done any skinning in a few generations now. They did have pride for their District, however, so they found jobs in the industry, just...ones that would "keep their brains from rotting," as her mother so elegantly put it. Dymphna's parents were "biochemical farmhands" - a title scripted by the Capitol to describe their role without making them sound too important (they had to be kept in their place, after all). Most aspects of the job were routine, like artificial insemination of dairy cows, controlling antibiotics administration, and coordinating with the waste management team.
The Skinners didn't have their own animals, but instead monitored and standardized others'. So unlike other kids in the District, Dymphna never got to learn practical skills like milking or herding or whatever else everyone else did after school. Although they didn't need land for their animals, the girl's parents did seek out a secluded home, to fit their huge egos to get...space from the others. Growing up Dymphna would watch the other kids running to each others' farms, where they would play with each other and with the animals and with their parents, and she would have no choice but to just keep walking home, alone. She'd open the door to an empty house, her only companion the silence she often felt like a weight on her shoulders. Her parents insisted that just about none of the friends she'd try to bring home were good enough, until she stopped bothering to tell them.
Dymphna felt like she didn't really fit in with the kids at school; they all seemed to have something she was missing.

Trivia: St. Dymphna is the patron saint of "the nervous, emotionally disturbed, mentally ill, and those who suffer neurological disorders - and, consequently, of psychologists, psychiatrists, and neurologists". She is associated with miraculous healings thereof. "Dymphna" roughly translates to "fawn" in Gaelic (but her character wouldn't really work in D10 so nevermind).
