it's a new dawn it's a new day it's a new life and I'm feeling good Madge knew today was the day. The Capitol would mail her father to see if she won or lost the contest. She couldn't imagine that there were a lot of people who entered the piano contest--as far as she knew, she was one of two people who played it in District 12, and the other one was her mother. She assumed that most people in other districts didn't play piano either, but her real competition was in the Capitol. She knew that a lot of people there were really good. She really hoped that she, for once in her life, outplayed them.
She was furiously playing her piano, letting out all of he nervousness through each ring of the keys. Madge had done it for about two hours now. She couldn't shake it off. It was good practice, she knew, but she wasn't doing it for practice. It was her only way to let her nervousness out. She finally heard the footsteps of her father coming down the stairs. Madge stopped abruptly, looking at her father. She had a pale blue dress on and her hair flowed down the back of it. She always had her hair like this when she played piano to not get it in her way.
"I have news," her father said. She couldn't get a read on him as to whether or not she won or lost. "Yes? What is it?" Madge said, trying to hide her smile so she wouldn't be disappointed. Please, I worked so hard for this, she thought. Her father then smiled. "You've won the contest! You'll be playing with four of the best pianist in the Capitol at a Gala. You'll be leaving tomorrow. I'm so proud of you, Madge!" She smiled the biggest she had ever smiled before. Her father hugged her, and she hugged him back. They were both so excited, and she couldn't believe she won. She had been practicing for so long and since she was a little girl.
Her father let go and then looked looked at her. "They gave us two tickets to go to the Capitol. I'm sorry honey, I wish I could go, but I have to stay here. You know tensions are high, so you'll have to go alone." He said the last part quietly even though it was only the two of them around. Madge knew that would probably be the case. She really didn't want to go alone. She would be alone in a city she had never been in, and that was the last think she wanted. There was only one person she could think of who might want to come with her. She knew Katniss probably didn't want to come after the whole mutt in the games, Echo's sister was murdered there so she figured he didn't want to come either, and she really only had one other friend. "Could I bring a friend?" She asked her father, and he gave a smile and a shrug. "I don't see why not." His reaction seemed surprised. She never brought anyone around, so he figured she didn't have a lot of friends. It was true, but she still had a couple of friends that mattered to her.
Madge smiled and nodded. "Thank you daddy!" She said and turned around. She grabbed a black jacket and walked out of her home. It was mid-morning in autumn, and she knew that Gale usually hung around the Hob at this time. From what he told her, he usually hunted and gathered in the morning and went to the Hob around 11. The blonde haired girl wondered what he would say when she asked him. If he didn't want to go, she would understand. She would just go alone, even though the thought of it terrified her. She walked swiftly to the Hob, knowing she had to buy some things to get ready to go to the Capitol tomorrow. Maybe a new pair of earrings or a necklace. She would usually go to the jeweler, but the Hob had more options most of the time.
She entered the Hob and looked around. Madge knew that she looked out of place--she always did--but she didn't care. The blonde girl looked for Gale, and out of the corner of her eye, she saw him at Greasy Sae's post. She walked over towards him. "Hey Gale, can I speak with you for a minute?" Madge smiled at him. She knew it was probably weird that she approached him here, but she was just too excited to wait. And since she was leaving tomorrow, she wanted to ask him as soon as possible. Gale stood at Greasy Sae’s booth in the Hob. She had made a joke with one of the other frequent customers that had left everyone laughing. Even though fall was fast fading to winter, spirits were somehow high. The mines were closed for a week for maintenance, which meant that only half the miners were working. Because Gale had slowly resumed hunting, he didn’t have to worry about food at his house, and there also tended to be the ever flowing stream from the Everdeens, no matter his insistences of independence. For once in a long while, life seemed to be looking up.
Gale heard a lighter, high voice from behind him and turned. Madge. If possible, his face lit up more. This elicited an eyebrow waggle from Greasy Sae that he could only hope Madge didn’t see. Before he could be embarrassed, he turned to walk with her, a bit farther away from the booth. ”Hey, Madge,” he said, smiling at the girl. In the passing months, they’d become increasingly close. At first, she’d mainly been Katniss’s friend, but that had changed. Now, he saw her much more often than he once had, but still less often than he wanted to.
She looked absolutely beautiful in her light blue dress, and also entirely out of place. Everything else was, like the woods surrounding them, dark with hues green and brown and made varying shades of black with coal dust. But Madge, with her golden hair, light eyes, fair skin and dress looked of an entirely different place. Gale smiled again, happy for the disruption. ”What’s new?” he asked, guessing that she probably came with news based on the smile on her face. Words: 300 Tags: @madge

Madge smiled and took Gale's hand. She led him away from the stand, just so they would have a little privacy. She let go of his hand. Gale was really important to her. He had been there when no one else had been. He deserved so much more than what he had, and he worked so hard to achieve caring for his family. She wanted to help him and his family, and if he ever asked for money, she would give it to him without a doubt. But this wasn't about money or family. She smiled in excitement, almost speechless in her nervousness to tell him.
"I...well, I was wondering if you would want to come to the Capitol with me. We would be gone for a week, and my mom could take care of your family. She said she wanted to invite them over for dinner sometime, so I don't see why it wouldn't be this week. And we would leave tomorrow. I'm sorry, I know this is all sudden, but my dad can't go and I don't have a lot of people to choose from," she said, smiling big. She knew her words were scrambled, but she was just so excited. She hoped he would say yes. "Oh, I'll be playing at a Gala. And they'll get you a suit and get me a dress. It'll be lots of fun, I promise. But I understand if you can't come, I know you have a lot to do."
The blonde girl was so excited to play the piano at the best place in Panem. Maybe there would be famous victors there! And the dresses would be so pretty. It was her dream come true. If Gale could come too, it would be even better. Having someone in the big Capitol would definitely help her shyness and anxiety. Gale was confident, and she wouldn't want anyone else with her in the Capitol. "What do you say?" WORD COUNT: 330 TAG: @hawthorne

Gale could feel the excitement pouring off Madge in waves. It was contagious, causing his smile to widen. When she began to talk, it slowly fell from his face, replaced by thought. "You won the competition," Gale said, more of a statement than a question. That caused one of the corners of his mouth to pop back upwards. "I can't say I'm surprised, Madge, but I am still really, really happy for you." What he hadn't, considered, though, was the possibility of her actually going to the Capitol. Gale didn't hate that place - he abhorred it. It was from that place that all pain and enslavement stemmed. Madge was set to go there, and, as it sounded, she would be alone if Gale didn't accompany her.
So many things seemed miles out of Gale's comfort zone: leaving 12 and his family, the Capitol, suits... But he had no excuse. He had no work for the week. His recent hunting trips had stocked the kitchen of his house with dried meat and the hidden cash box with enough money to pull the Hawthornes all the way through the winter. And, besides, what if something happened to Madge if she went alone? Gale's mind turned over and over again. He couldn't believe that he was actually considering going to the Capitol with Madge. The idea was so far removed from what he could have ever expected. After a quiet moment of thought, Gale looked up to meet Madge's eyes. "I - well - do you think my uh, my record will interfere?" The whipping was no secret: everyone in the Seam either had witnessed it firsthand or heard about it. Gale still felt the need to drop his voice when talking about it though, almost as if he didn't want to put a damper on the rare, jovial mood in the Hob. "Will they let a convicted criminal enter the Capitol?"

Madge had always wanted the best for others, and that was more true for Gale. He has had a rough life, she knew, and she wanted to do anything she could for him. It wasn't pity, but something else she couldn't put her finger on. He was her friend, after all, and she had a special place in her heart for him. The blonde girl was proud of him and what he did to keep his family alive. She wouldn't have the willpower to do what he had done through his whole life. In a sense, she admired him for what he did. Her father had told her to find a man who was willing to stand up for what he believed in, and Gale did just that. He was someone she looked up to. She knew there were feelings there, at least for her, but she had to hide them. She still didn't know if Katniss and him were...together, and she didn't want to get in the way of that. Both of her friends deserved the best, even if she had to sacrifice her own happiness.
She smiled and blushed a little when he said that he was proud of her. She would have blushed if anyone said that, but she did so especially for Gale. "Thank you Gale, that really means a lot to me." Madge gave another smile. She couldn't help how happy she was, and even if she was going alone, she would still think of him when she was playing.
Madge, as Gale spoke, then remembered his whipping. She forgot about his record, but she didn't care and that didn't define him to her. She tilted her head in thought. "I don't think so. I mean, I think you'll be able to come. As long as you don't run off and forget about me, I think you'll be fine." She said with a lighthearted chuckle. She trusted him just as much as she would trust anyone, and she trusted that he wouldn't run away and leave. They would be escorted by Peacekeepers the whole time anyways, so there wasn't much room for him running away either. Madge was more than happy that he was considering going with her, and that meant the world to the girl. WORD COUNT: 385 TAG: @hawthorne

If Madge was any other girl, Gale would have long since made a move. With any other girl Gale ever was interested in, he didn't spend weeks or months waiting to express that interest. He had plenty of experience, so that wasn't the problem. It was that she was very different than any girl that had ever caught his eye. Most of the girls back in school were Seam, not Merchant. He'd always seen Merchant girls as hard to approach, as many of them tended to have their noses up in the air when around the poorer populations. Before he'd gotten to know her, Gale saw Madge as basically the same type. It took talking to her and spending time around her to learn that Madge was the farthest thing away from being stuck up. But now that he knew her, it was hard to push past the danger of her being the Mayor's daughter. If he was wrong about her, then not only did Gale face rejection, but possibly even the Mayor. And it was hard to assume that Madge saw anything at all in Gale, with him having so many dependent on him already. Katniss's mother had left the Merchant district for her Seam boyfriend, but it was considered a very rare case. Hazelle told him that the town gossiped about it for months.
No thought, though, could discourage Gale from admiring the lovely flush across Madge's beautiful face. It made him smile in response, proud of the expression that he was responsible for. He watched Madge's expression change slightly after he brought up the whipping. It wasn't like he wanted to keep living with it, but it really had marred his records. What she said made him laugh. "Of course I won't run off and forget you, I don't think I could ever do that" he said, now more serious, but still grinning. "Well, Madge, you drive a hard bargain, but I think I'll go," Gale said after a quiet moment. "Only question is, will you run off and forget about me once we're in the Capitol and you become their famed piano star?"

Madge really enjoyed Gale's laugh. She knew it was a cheesy thing to compliment on him, but it was something that wasn't heard very often. She thought that he was the most handsome when he did just that, and it made her smile too. She wondered if this trip would mean anything to them. Maybe they would have the best of times as friends, or maybe they could be more. It would be the two of them most of the time, with the exception of Peacekeepers. She hoped that Gale wouldn't cause a stir in the Capitol, but she really didn't think he would. This trip was about the two of them experiencing something that was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Gale was someone she could spend a lot of time with. She still didn't know how Katniss and him were, but she planned on asking him that on the trip.
When he said he wanted to go, she grinned one of the biggest grins in her life. He actually wanted to go with her? She wasn't used to that. She was so happy he said yes. She knew he had a lot on his plate, so she was so thankful that he could come. "Thank you Gale. It really means a lot. More than I can express," she said looking up at him. She was so happy though, and she couldn't hide it. Madge couldn't think of anyone else she would want to go with her. Gale saying yes to something so big was a surprise, but a great one at that.
She listened to him and laughed. "Of course not! It's only a one time deal anyways. If I wanted to do that, I wouldn't be taking you now would I?" She said with an eyebrow raised. "Well Gale, you better pack your things because tomorrow we're traveling! I'm so excited, I can't wait!" It was so hard to hold her excitement, but she tried keeping her voice down to the both of them. She couldn't help it, but out of her reaction, she hugged him. She didn't know if that was okay, but it was just an instinct that she did do it. And she didn't regret it either. WORD COUNT: 374 TAG: @hawthorne

Gale was absolutely out of his mind. His rebel’s heart was never meant for the Capitol, though really the trip wasn’t at all about the Capitol at all. It was about Madge, about the expression of sheer joy that illuminated every inch of her, about the happiness that made her glow like the stars in the night sky.
A quiet, selfish thought had bit at the back of Gale’s mind for years. He told himself that someday, his siblings would grow up and take on lives of their own such that he would be free to relax. Years of living on the edge of starvation had tempered Gale into a provider for others, but rarely for himself. The look that entered Madge’s eyes, though, made him want to throw away that vision and do everything possible just so he could see her make that expression again. It made him forget all his opposition to the Capitol and worry about the trip.
Her excitement as she told him to pack was contagious. Gale’s smile on his face widened to a grin. ”I’m excited, too-“ he started to say, but stopped abruptly when he felt her arms wrapping around him.
It was a gesture he was fairly unfamiliar with, and the suddenness of her touch caused all his muscles to tense for a moment in shock. In a moment, though, Gale’s initial reaction was behind him and he wrapped his arms around her perhaps a bit too tightly to call the touch strictly friendly. She smelled wonderfully fresh, like some sort of rich soap, and the bare skin of her arm that Gale brushed with his hand was unbelievably soft.
”I’m excited, too.”
