Phoenix rolled around to her side in bed, not completely sure if she was awake or if she was sleeping. It was the absence of a Max that made her tiredly open her eyes while trying to hold back a yawn. The room was dark so she couldn't make out much but it was clear to her that he wasn't in the room. She rubbed at her eyes and sat up in bed. Looking to her right side, the clock showed 4.30 in the morning. She wasn't sure why she didn't just go back to sleep, he was probably just in the bathroom or in the kitchen getting a snack. Yet there was this nagging feeling at the back of her head telling her that something wasn't right and it was that feeling that eventually made her get out of bed. They'd been together for two months now and she'd loved every second of it. Now, when she knew better, she couldn't understand how she'd been so hesitant and afraid to let him be a part of her life. In a way, he enriched it and knowing what it felt like to have him made the thought of losing him so much terrifying. It wasn't something she actively thought about, but the thought still had its way of creeping into her consciousness. She hated it, hated the thought of losing him and just thinking that it would ever happen. She wanted to be positive but at every turn, her trust issues would come whispering things, telling her that at some point he'd leave and she would be left alone, being only half of the person she'd been before after giving him the other half. To anyone else, this would probably be what loving someone is like, but Phoenix was still too scared to admit it to herself. A deep sigh escaped her lips as she reached the doorway to her room. For a moment she just stood there, taking deep breaths while letting her thoughts settle themselves out. Exhaling, she took a step outside of the room and went looking for Max. Seeing that the lights were off in the bathroom, she quickly ruled the possibility of him being there out. The kitchen followed next but he wasn't there either. It was when she was passing through the living room that she saw his silhouette, not inside, but outside on the balcony. She slid the door to the side and stepped out into the chilly night. Phoenix approached him and wrapped her arms around him from behind, kissing his shoulder. "Hey you", she said and walked around to face him. She hadn't know what to expect when he was out smoking at this hour, but the empty look on his face was certainly not it. Phoenix frowned, her hand reaching for his arm. "Max... What's wrong?" she asked, already sensing that it couldn't be something good. WC: 487 Tags: Max Aspheni

*** TRIGGER WARNING *** Max sat up with a start. His chest rose and fell heavily, and it took more than just a moment for him to remember that the horrible visions in his head had been just a nightmare. He pushed a hand through his hair and sat up. He should have found solace in his safety, especially because as he looked down, he saw a sleeping Phoenix beside him, her dark hair spread out across the pillow. Max ran his fingers through it for a moment, but he just couldn’t shake that sinking feeling in the very pit of his stomach. There were some things he could never unsee. Max’s “father” had came home, absurdly drunk and ready to make Max’s life hell. It had been a new pattern. With work getting harder, his “father” got angrier and found Max as a fantastic avenue for relieving that. There was always something that Max had done wrong, something worth a slap or punch. He heard the front door open, followed by heavy footsteps towards his door. Max bit down on his lip. The door swung open, and there stood Titus Aspheni. He let out a cruel laugh. “What, you aren’t hiding this time?” he said between roars, like it was the funniest thing he’d ever seen in his life. The laughter stopped. “I didn’t raise you to act like such a coward. Be a man! You stand up and take this!” Though his hands shook, Max sat firm. Titus drew back his hand once and slapped it across Max’s face, hard. The slap burned badly. Max trained his eyes on the floor, willing himself to not cry. Titus sneered, “for Snow’s sake, you’re not even worth hitting.” Titus stalked off, muttering curses under his breath as he went. Max let out a shaky breath, and slowly slid his head down into his hands. He’d gotten hit much harder before, but this time he was worthless.
For hours, he tried to calm down, to focus on schoolwork, anything, really, other than Titus’s words. His brain roared with the loudest of volumes, like his thoughts were turned on full blast with no hope of dulling. He was boiling over. He needed to feel something else, anything other than the screaming and breaking in his brain.
With a blade taken from his razor in the shower, he figured out just how to do that.
Max sat against the bathtub, eyes closed with his arm hanging over it. There was just static now, a comforting, dark silence. He’d have to clean the blood from the floor, from his skin, but for the first time in months, he didn’t feel at all. And, once he’d discovered how to do that, he didn’t for a very long time.
To make himself calm down, Max got out of bed. To stop himself from looking down at his arms again and again, easily spotting the scars under his tattoos, he found a long sleeved shirt and pulled it over his head. He then walked off in hopes finding a joint somewhere. When he finally did, Max walked outside to Phoenix’s balcony. He didn’t know the time, just that it was in the very early hours of the morning, too late for anyone to be partying still, and far too early for anyone to be waking up, which meant privacy. He stood and watched the city lights, smoking the joint down to almost nothing.
When arms wrapped around him from behind, he jumped a bit before realizing who they belonged to. ”Oh, Phoenix, hey,” he said, leaning into her touch. He quickly finished off the last of his joint, dropping the ashes into a nearby tray on the table near him. ”It’s stupid,” he said, shaking his head. ”I just, uh, well, I had this nightmare and needed to shake it off, as stupid as that sounds.”

Phoenix's brows rose when she heard his explanation. She felt her heart sink a little, her mind automatically rushing to one conclusion, the only one she could think of really. They'd spent more night together than she could count now and whenever she couldn't sleep, she'd gotten the habit of examining his tattoos. Then sometimes, it wouldn't only be tattoos that she saw, but faint scars beneath and from what she'd seen there were a lot of them. To her, considering how little she actually knew about his past, his scars were the only explanation to his nightmare, or at least so she thought. Her frown returned soon. Her hand slid down his arm before she laced her fingers between his. "Do you want to talk about it? I understand if you don't", she added while looking up at him. She, if anyone, knew what it was like not wanting to talk about certain things so she was certainly not going to push him about whatever it was that bothered him.

Max frowned a little as he looked at Phoenix. She looked sad, hurt. He’d come to realize that this was a relationship - throwing yourself out to be tied to someone else entirely. He cared about her more than he ever imagined he could. Max knew that if it were Phoenix who had came out to this balcony, he’d be worried out of his mind. She knew so little about him, really. Max had learned about her parents, about her art. But she didn’t know any of his deepest, darkest demons that he’d kept chained away. Sure, she knew the things on the surface. That he liked blue, inked drawings, late night snacks, and that he hated garlic on his food. Those things felt strangely intimate when combined, like Phoenix had come to fully understand the person that he was. He frowned a bit, squeezing her hand. It wasn’t fair to withhold everything.
He exhaled a bit. ”Do you want me to talk about it?” Max asked as he met her eyes. ”It’s either way for me, honestly. It’s just that I feel like you probably don’t want to hear me talking about this.” Words: 205 Tags: Phoenix Ezra

Phoenix kept holding onto his hand, feeling it ground her somehow. Hearing his answer, she couldn't but exhale from her nose, a slight shake of her head following. "Of course I do Max. I want to be here for you and I can only do that if you let me", she told him, her other hand cupping around his cheek. She meant it in every possible way as well. They were way beyond the kind of relationship they'd had in the beginning now, and somehow it had turned into him becoming her best friend. Sure, they hadn't hit any bumps on the road yet but they supported and helped each other and somehow, all of that had become her favorite part of their relationship. Without actually waiting for him to say or do anything else, she guided him to the set of outdoor furniture that were out there and sat down on the couch. "Please don't feel like you have to tell me", she told him again, wanting him to know that she didn't want to pressure him. She remembered the one time she'd gotten pressured about a certain thing and it hadn't led to anything good at all.

One of Max’s eyebrows raised just a bit at Phoenix’s reply. Even though she was so caring, part of him had expected her to want to hear. Who would, if they knew what he was about to say? Max remembered the look on Vixus’s face when he’d first seen his body. He didn’t want to scare Phoenix and make her run away. He figured, though, that she’d seen his scars at some point, and maybe already had some idea of what had happened. Nothing had been said about it, but it was at least a hope.
Max sat down beside her on the couch and continued to look off the balcony and into the night. How was he going to tell her this? He sighed, still looking out, letting the silence wash over him and calm him. Max looked down at last, this time studying the pattern between the tiles that paved the large balcony. ”So I’m sure that by this point, you’ve probably seen my arms. Not the tattoos, but - what’s under the tattoos, that is.” He was quiet for a moment, trying to allow himself to proceed in some way without choking up or making it more awkward than it had to be. ”And I also figured that if you noticed that they were on both arms, all the way up and down, and on my thighs too, that you’d sort of maybe think that they were intentional.” Max exhaled a bit. He could feel the weight lifting off his shoulders, but he also felt so heavy exposing himself in this way to her. ”And you’d be right.” He glanced over to her lap, not yet wanting to look her in the eyes and also not wanting to touch her because sometimes he felt like he was a leper.
”It was - they happened when I was going through a really, really hard time a long time ago. And it was a really bad time, so even though I’m over it, I still remember. And remembering hurts sometimes.” Words: 360 Tags: Phoenix Ezra

Phoenix tensed when he began to speak and gave off a slight nod. She'd noticed his scars the second time they met but had kept it to herself ever since. She frowned a little bit when he wouldn't look at her as he spoke. Somehow it just made it all worse, realizing how difficult it actually was for him to tell her about it. Whatever pain she felt, his was probably so much worse and that was what got to her the most. She sucked in a shaky breath when he confirmed that it was self-inflicted, tears soon beginning to trickle down her cheeks. It had been one thing to go around just thinking that something must have happened for him to harm himself, but to actually hear him say it was a completely different matter. It hurt more than she expected it would, to hear him acknowledge it out loud. Realizing that he still wasn't looking at her, she couldn't help but reach for his face as she scooted closer to him, guiding his eyes to meet hers. "Hey... I'm sorry Max. I'm sorry that you had to go through that... That you still do." She tugged at her bottom lip, her gaze lowering for a moment before looking back up at him. "Thank you", she said. "Thank you for telling me", Phoenix added, genuinely meaning it. She wanted to ask him what it was that had happened but like always when things were too personal, she decided to keep quiet. She knew he'd tell her when he was ready, just like she would tell him certain things when she was ready.

The hardest thing to see was just how hurt Phoenix was. Max could still clearly see the look that was on Vixus’s face. When Max was hurting, he felt so alone, like there was not a single person in Panem who cared. He had no idea that his life could impact others to such a great extent. And he guess it would make sense. If the position was flipped, his heart would have been shattered. He felt so ashamed at once. When she touched his face to make him look at her, Max broke inside. He never saw her cry before. He didn’t want to touch her at first, worrying that she would maybe be disgusted by him. The touch of her was comforting, though, and he wanted it more. Very carefully, he slid one arm around her back, drawing her closer. ”I’m really, really sorry, Phoenix,” he said. With his free hand, he ever so gently wiped the tears from her cheeks. ”If it’s any consolation, I’m so happy now. I had nothing then, really, but I have everything now. There’s always been Vixus and his mom, they’re my true family, and there’s the shop, and now there’s you. It’s everything that I could want, more than I could have wanted, really. I’m okay now” he said. Every word of it was true. It felt like a peak. He really couldn’t imagine how things could get any better for him - he’d been given the world. Now, all that was left to do was live in it. Words: 300 Tags: Phoenix Ezra

Phoenix's eyes closed for a brief moment when he wiped at her tears, her head slightly leaning into his hand. She'd never thought it would hurt this much to love someone and- Phoenix froze as the thought hit her. She'd known it for a while but hadn't dared to admit it, neither to him or herself. But that was what this was, right? Caring so deeply for someone else that their happiness became your own, their pain became your pain and the only thing she wanted was for him to be happy. That had to be love, right? Phoenix sniffled back her tears and leaned forward, her arms wrapping around his neck in a tight embrace. "And me, you're stuck with for a very long time", she murmured into his shoulder before pulling back to kiss him. Usually every kiss they shared was passionate and full of energy but that wasn't the case this time. This time her lips met his in a soft, tender kiss that seemed to knock the air out of her, making her insides tremble. Pulling back, her hands were on each side of his face, a couple of tears still visible on her own. Her eyes meeting his gave her some kind of strength she didn't think she currently had. "I love you Max. And nothing will ever change that." She couldn't help but tear up even more as she said the words out loud, feeling it to her very soul how much it was true. He meant the world to her and she loved him. She loved him too much to keep her feelings to herself and to be afraid of his reaction. She knew he felt the same despite never having told her before. Maybe tonight was the time for both of them.

Max smiled as Phoenix leaned into his hand. It was a small movement that spoke large measures. Her touch was reassuring, grounding. He liked the idea of being with her for a very long time - for as long as he could get. Phoenix was extraordinary. She made him laugh. He had so much fun with her, and she truly made him feel alive. Beyond that, he found himself caring so deeply for her. She was special, unique, his own one in a million. And, somehow, he’d ended up with her. She kissed him softly but deeply. He wrapped his other arm around her back, drawing her closer yet again. He could not ever get enough. Like her, it was fresh and new and something that he wanted again. Phoenix pulled back, and Max watched her attentively. His jaw loosened and fell a bit as he heard her say those three words. I love you.Max’s love came from Vixus and Vilandra, family that wasn’t blood. He had those two people, and even though he was endlessly thankful for them, it never felt like enough. Max had been scared of emotion, of commitment, but Phoenix was the best thing that had ever happened to him. He exhaled shakily, the emotions of her words flooding him. ”I love you, too, Phoenix.” he told her with such certainty that he terrified himself. Max hadn’t wanted ties, obligations, emotion. It was what he had needed, though. She was his solace and shelter. Phoenix had given him so much, bringing every part of him to a heightened form of life. Not able to hold back any longer, he pulled her up onto his lap in a single, easy motion, drawing her close and enveloping her in his arms. Max lay his head on her shoulder for a moment, then whispered again, ”I love you, too.”Words: 350 Tags: Phoenix EzraNotes: Awwwww… maybe they aren’t so deeply ruined after all

Phoenix couldn't help the smile on her face when he said it back. All she could think about was how amazing it felt, how amazing he made her feel. She laughed a little when he pulled her up onto his lap. Her smile faded a little bit when he rested his head on her shoulder, whispering the words again. It sent shivers dancing down her spine and she knew that she'd always remember this moment. It meant everything to her and if anything, it washed away her fears for the time being. He washed away her fears and for that she truly did love him. Her hand had gone to the back of his head, gently caressing it without her even realizing. She smiled a little, very much enjoying their current situation. It hurt, having her thought confirmed now but it also felt like a huge relief, knowing that he trusted her with something as private as his past. She of all people knew what that was like. Sure, she talked about her parents and how much she missed them but those were things that anyone could easily figure out on their own. For some reason, she wanted to give back, to show him that she too trusted him which she did, to an extent. Phoenix inhaled and leaned down, pecking his cheek. "C'mon, I want to show you something", she told him and stood up, reaching out her hand for him to take. She hadn't shown him her studio yet, never really feeling that the time was right. It felt right this time though and maybe it could help him. She had an idea after all.

Max had never really seen himself getting into a relationship of any sort, much less a serious one. When thinking of being with someone, he imagined the commitment. In his mind’s eye, a relationship looked like a ball and chain on his ankle. What Max didn’t imagine, though, were all the other things that came along with it. He didn’t think of waking up beside someone, going to breakfast with them. He didn’t imagine having that shelter that was so readily available. Max thought that over time, he’d quickly lose interest, but he’d been so wrong. Phoenix only became more interesting with each passing day, with each of her little quirks he learned. Really, if it was possible, he would never sleep. Sometimes it felt like the time they had was never enough because with her, he felt so full and invincible and alive. Max never wanted a relationship because he couldn’t see himself falling in love, until he actually did. Max relished the moment, loving the feel of Phoenix against him. Serenity enveloped the moment. When she moved, he sighed a bit, adjusting himself but giving a smile as he stood up. Max took her smaller hand in his, another unexpected perk of relationships. The constant need to touch her, to feel connected was sometimes overwhelming. ”I’m excited,” he told her, and he was. ’I’m curious, too. What are you showing me?” he asked as he looked down. Phoenix smiled when he took her hand. She couldn't help but chuckle a little bit when he asked her what she was going to show him. "You'll see", she replied with a smile and led him back inside the apartment. He knew she painted and knew that she was Xeno but up until this moment he hadn't known where she did that. She was fairly sure he knew that it was behind the door that was always locked but now was the time to show him what was behind it. A deep breath filled her lungs when they reached the other side of the apartment. It felt overwhelming to show it to him, with it having been her secret for so long. She couldn't help resting her forehead on the door for a moment, trying to gather the courage to open it. Phoenix turned around to look at him. "Kiva and Merc are the only ones who have been here", she told him, feeling somewhat nervous. She didn't need to do anything other than look into Max's eyes to know that it was the right decision she was making. A small sigh followed before she clicked in the code on the handle, opening the door for him to see what was behind it. Stepping in, she felt at peace, serene even. When she bought the apartment she bought the one next to it as well and then connected the two, needing all the space she could get. Paintings covered the entire place, some hanging on the wall while other were standing on the floor with the wall holding them up. For a moment she didn't dare to look back at Max to see his reaction. It scared her, showing him this part of her even though he'd been at the exhibition and knew that every painting had been done by her. Yet this was different somehow, with him getting to see where it all happened. Taking a deep breath, she turned around to face him, anxious to see his reaction.

Max always got the sense that there was far more to see of Phoenix than what was on the surface. No one could be a member of a wealthy, politically involved family in the Capitol without having their own skeletons in the closet. Really, Max was pretty sure that his amounted to more than a mass grave. He never pried for that reason: because he understood. There were still so many things that Max wasn't comfortable discussing, things that he might never want to talk about with Phoenix. He'd never lied to her though, just kept certain things to himself, and he'd come to trust her to do the same things. That was why he didn't mind the locked doors (the ones that were in her own house, after all) and never asked questions. He assumed that if she ever wanted to talk about it, she would. And, from their position in front of the locked door, it seemed as if Max had been right all along. He gave her space, then offered a small reassuring smile and squeezed her hand when she looked back to him. Max could tell that she was trusting him and offering out a huge part of herself to him by showing him whatever was behind the door. The handle clicked as the door opened. It only took a single glance for Max to realize where Phoenix had taken him. When he'd seen her out, it had been at her own exhibit. Phoenix had used an alias - Xeno - for her art. It was the exact opposite of his: loose, colorful, private sometimes abstract, packed with expression and meaning. Max was all clean and concise lines, working meticulously through each detail. Max's art adorned the bodies of more of his clients than he could ever count. He hadn't really expected to see Phoenix's art again, basing his judgement on how personal it was to her. But here it was, covering almost every surface he could see. Some were clearly finished, others looked like they perhaps were in progress. His eyes were huge as he tried to take all the art in at once. It was like the paintings were alive, like they themselves were some extension of Phoenix because every single inch of canvas breathed her. "It's the best gallery I've ever seen," he said, not wanting to stop looking at the art just yet before remembering that some of it stood right beside him. Max looked at Phoenix. It's absolutely phenomenal," he told her. Max paused for a moment, then added, "just like you."Words:435 Tags: Phoenix Ezra

Phoenix stood there, her heart beating hard in her chest. Showing Max this was incredibly nerve-wrecking as she felt like she was exposing herself completely to him. Her brothers knew what went on inside her mind, they've always known but for someone outside the family to see it all was new and absolutely terrifying, even though it was Max. She loved him more than she thought she could ever love someone but to do this... She was showing him everything, all that she was and all that she thought and felt and it scared her. It scared her because for one brief moment when he just stood there without saying anything, she thought that this would be the part where he would leave her. But then he spoke and all of her doubt left in a single moment. She didn't mean to cry, but showing him this and hearing his response was overwhelming, so when a couple of tears rolled down her face she decided to let them. Smiling through her tears, her hand reached for his, squeezing it for reassurance. "Thank you. It really means a lot to me coming from you", she told him and pecked his cheek before she began to guide him towards the area where she painted, remembering why she was showing it to him in the first place. She let go of his hand and took down the half finished piece that she had on a stand, replacing it with a new canvas. She also grabbed a brush and turned around to face him. "Try not to think, okay? Just paint. No details, no thinking, just paint it all out." She wasn't sure he'd understand what she was trying to get at but once he started it would probably make more sense. Phoenix smiled a little and put the brush in his hand before reaching up on her toes, tasting his mouth with her own. Pulling back, she looked into his eyes, warmth and love showing in hers. "It helps me every time and maybe it'll help you. Take all the time you need and when you're done I'll be waiting for you, okay?" WC: 360 Tags: Max Aspheni

Max watched in curiosity as Phoenix moved an unfinished painting to the floor. Just as she replaced it with a fresh, blank one, he understood why she brought him to this room. Max’s art was all intricate and careful lines. His whole career depended on caution and perfection. He was paid to illustrate portraits and designs with exactness and time. Phoenix’s art, on the other hand, was unrestrained passion poured all over the canvas. He smiled as she slid a brush into his hand, letting the smile blend into their kiss. “Okay, of course. Thank you so much, Phoenix.” Deciding to text out the words for the second time ever, Max whispered them like a prayer into her hair. “I love you.” ———————————— Max stared at the paints for a moment before deciding on the dark green color that always inexplicably reminded him of Phoenix. He dipped the brush into the container almost tentatively. Phoenix’s words echoed in his mind. “No details, no thinking, just paint it all out”. Years ago, his life - much like his dream - was painted with red. It seemed almost poetic that now, it was all green. Of course, that was the color that he would chose to cover his first canvas, just as it enveloped him. ————————————
Hours later, perhaps - Max wasn’t sure how much time had passed, really - he slid out of the room and cleaned as much of the green from his hands as he could. Max treaded through the house carefully, trying very hard not to disturb the silent peace resting over the place. He opened the door to Phoenix’s bedroom slowly, expecting to find her curled up and asleep under the covers. Instead, she was sitting up, fully awake. Max smiled at her widely, his heart shattering at the realization that she was so much better than he ever deserved. He crossed the room and dropped to his side of the bed. Max locked eyes for a moment with her, at a bit of a loss for words. There was so much to say and somehow nothing to say that would encompass everything that he was feeling. Instead, Max settled on a simple “thank you.” Words: 367 Tags: Phoenix Ezra

Phoenix melted into his arms for a brief moment when he told her that he loved her. A smile grew on her face, with warmth beginning to spread throughout her body. She wanted to stay in that moment and never leave but knew that she had to. With a reassuring squeeze on his shoulder she left the room and made her way back to the bedroom. It felt like she was walking on clouds, feeling serene and almost euphoric. If she'd known that this was what loving someone felt like she would've allowed herself to do it a long time ago. Sliding back underneath the covers, she realized that if she hadn't waited then it probably wouldn't be Max who she'd love and there was nothing in the world that would make her want someone else. It was amazing, how they fit together, understood each other... She smiled to herself, nuzzling her face down into his pillow. She truly loved him and no matter what happened to them in the future, she knew that she'd always be grateful to him for letting her know what loving someone felt like. ---------------------------- Her eyes slowly opened to the sound of nothing. She felt heavy and incredibly sleepy. Looking to her side, she saw that Max still wasn't back. Remembering that she'd told him that she would wait up for him, she tried to stay awake but soon dozed off again. --------------------------- This time, it was the sound of the door to the bedroom opening that woke Phoenix up from her sleep. She smiled lazily when she saw that it was Max. Her heart skipped a beat when his eyes met hers with such intensity. When he thanked her, she scooted closer and hugged him, resting her head on his chest after giving it a small peck. For a moment she just laid there, enjoying the presence of him next to her. It didn't take long before she looked up at him, a smile on her face. "Thank you. For letting me know what it's like to love and be loved." A small kiss followed, sealing her words and showing him just how much she really meant. Once again, it wasn't like their usual passionate, eager kisses, but a tender and soft one instead. Pulling back, her face now in height with his she spoke again. "I love you. So very much." WC: 397 Tags: Max Aspheni

Max smiled at the feeling of Phoenix beside him. She was so warm and comfortable. His place beside her felt like home. This wasn't a live he ever expected for himself. Max's policy was to avoid his demons for as long as possible and then drown them with liquor or smoke with Vixus when he couldn't push them out of his mind. He also had hopped around from woman to woman, never staying for longer than a night. At the time, his life seemed perfectly fine. It wasn't until he'd experienced this that he knew that his life was in an entirely new different, much better state. He could never go back. Max let all of the feelings sink in to him, wrapping around him more tightly than a warm blanket ever would. This was the greatest brand of relief he had ever felt. Earlier in the night, he felt inconsolable and broken. As he was learning, he could make improvements when he had the help of Phoenix. He tangled a hand into her hair as he settled into a comfortable position. As he sank into the mattress little by little, he felt the grasps of sleep beginning to latch on. Just before he drifted off, he repeated Phoenix's words. "I love you, too."Words: 238 Tags: Phoenix EzraNotes: A couple apologies for: taking so long, writing so poorly, writing so little, and being super lame.
