Running a hand through her hair she sighed quietly and looked in the mirror, she had dressed for the evening’s dinner where she and the female tribute Kailana while the boys were out doing what boys did. Closing her eyes she shook her head and tied her hair back before she turned from the mirror, even now she hated seeing herself in the mirror. She had aged in more ways than any one person should, shaking her head she walked down the stairs slowly and looked around seeing herself alone she settled in.
Grabbing some water she mixed lemon in and drank slowly, one of the best things she liked about the capital was the food. Relaxing she looked around the room, every year the apartments were always different from the last. Something new, something flashy or something that was a waste of resources. Shaking her head she closed her eyes and allowed her mind to wander, it was easier to forget when she refused to settle on one thought. Shaking her head she rested her head in her hand and relaxed slowly.
Hearing footsteps she paused and looked up, her eyes wandered the steps before she stood slowly “Kailana it’s nice to see you Finnick and Jack are training downstairs if you would like…I can try and help” she offered the young girl a gentle smile. She wanted to help, how good her advice was in the games though would be anyone’s guess.

Kailani was in her room getting ready for dinner. It wasn't like it was a huge ordeal for her. As a matter of fact she could wear something a little less elegant and that's exactly what she was going to do. She put on a skirt that she tied around herself and a shirt that was a light blue color. It was dressed down but still made her look pretty. She had fashioned her hair so that there were two small braids that were tied together in the back with the rest of her hair down and flowing freely. Yes this was how she liked it to be. She had taken to liking her hair down. It made her look more elegant and more appealing or at least she hoped it did. At home she didn't have to make an impression so she could keep her hair up all she wanted. Her braids were held in place with a silver clip and there was a small teal hybiscus on her right side.
She emerged from her bedroom to the sounds of slience. The boys must have not been in the apartment yet for dinner. She didn't find this odd. Boys loved to fight around a horse play. Of course this was training and she should have probably been doing some herself. Still she felt confident enough to at least have dinner right about now. She smiled at Annie as she came to sit down next to the female mentor. She had heard stories or at least stories had drifted down to her about Annie. People called her crazy but Kailani didn't think that. She was scared about how she was going to turn out if she came out of these games alive. Part of her was actually thinking it might be better to die. However, it would be one of the district four tributes coming home. She had already had that chat with Jack. They already had a plan.
Still things could change and she knew that well enough. "its a pleasure to have it just be us at the moment Annie. The boys can be so rowdy sometimes." She let out a small laugh as she moved to get a plate and fill it with the seafood that was sitting on the table. "Annie, were you a trained career. I mean to say did you willingly go into trainning."

“You should do that more often your very pretty”, she was soft spoken at the moment as she looked at her. Should Kailana come home she was sure the girl would have many admires, closing her eyes she paused and gave a nod when she said that she was glad to have some alone time. The men were okay but some girl time was always pleasant, turning her attention to the girl she paused “it will do you will with sponsors, show it off a bit let them fall in love with you” she told her and bowed her head. It was the best way to survive was to become a crowd favorite, Finnick and may others had done it in the past some won and others didn’t life was cruel.
She very rarely spoke about her time in the games, so when asked her hands shook slightly and she swallowed. For several minutes it was almost as if she had no intention of answering, yet when she looked up at the young girl who needed her advice and answers she paused and gave a weak nod. “I have known Finnick since I was but three, I was on the boat with my mom and fell in I couldn’t swim and he saved me” she whispered her eyes sad. “I watched him, when he went into the arena when he won I had hopes that he would be the man I had grown to love coming home” she blinked back tears as her hands shook but slowly she steadied herself.
“By the time he came home, things had changed the capital had a star usually someone important came by a female and stayed the night and I did not see him that day” she shuddered quietly. “But he taught me how to swim, always a hero”. For once she spoke lovingly almost normally as she thought of the man she loved. “I am the daughter of the man who makes the nets for fishing in district four, we were well off enough where I had hopes to be ignored in the reaping or a volunteer would come forward” she shook her head and sighed.
“A few weeks before the reaping, Finnick was summoned to the capital but he told them no to stay with me” she whispered. Her eyes glossed over as she bowed her head, “on the day of the reaping my name was pulled out, perhaps it was fate or other ways against us but I was reaped” she gripped the cloth with her hand as she swallowed. “Perhaps it was many hoping to gain Finnicks favor when I was gone, no one stepped up I entered the arena” she whispered.
“I am no killer my district partner Vince, was beheaded in the games in front of me a good man” she whispered her eyes had tears in them as she spoke. “near the end, a dam broke and flooded the arena I was the best swimmer…despite my mental condition I won the games while the others cried out around me before it became silent…I returned home, to this day I see his head, hear the screams in every dream…some while I am asleep and others, while I sleep” she whispered.
“I was no career tribute, but…I survived…and so will you” she hugged her as she finally let go of the cloth.

Kailani felt the heat rise on her cheeks. She was not used to being called pretty. It was the reason that her stylist took her around. She knew that some called her the goddess of the ocean when she had come out of swimming in the ocean. She couldn't help but blush. "Thank you. I..I am trying. It helps when our stylist wears me on his arm like a trophies and his own personal doll. I like keeping it simple like this. It's different then at home but it's supposed to be." She gave a small smile and too a drink of her juice.
When Annie paused in answering her question she felt bad deep down for asking. However she didn't exactly want to seem weak. Still a sort of sadness washed over her face as Annie began to explain the relationship between her and Finnick and her own games. Kailani remember watching it, but she had been young and had not understood why everyone had drowned. She had not been able to comprehend the fact that people could not swim. "I am so sorry annie. I did not mean to bring up the harshness I just...I just needed to be reminded that I could do this. I mean...I was forced into training by my step mother."
"We lost our father years ago. I became the mother to my little sister even though we had a step mother but she had come from a career family. Had trained herself. She couldn't stand that we didn't train. She saw strength in my brother but he refused and I did at first too but..." She wasn't sure why she was saying this but she felt she needed to get this off her chest before she went in there before she changed. She knew she would have too. Annie ' s words has told her so.
"I ended up going into training to avoid the beatings and my siblings getting hurt. I have the scars to prove what happened when my step mother was disobeyed. She already thinks me dead. She is likely going for Jack to win. I have something to prove here. I need to live." She looked down.
She knew it was more likely that she would die. She needed to make it home for her siblings and herself.

“It is my job to help as a victor, to give you my knowledge…I can do that at least” she looked at her and sighed. She knew that these days were hard, they were every year but she would make do. Her eyes stayed on the female tribute as she smiled faintly “you are his doll, as each person is every year to their own it is his job to make you look perfect” she paused. “and he has, you have attracted sponsors left and right Oliva your friend back home has already stepped up saying that she pledged her money to help bring you home” she smiled faintly. “We will do our best to make sure you or Jack gets home, we support you both” she told her and sighed.
She paused at her words and hugged her gently and reached up slowly stroking her hair as she spoke, a small pause before she stroked her hair slowly “You are a good woman, don’t let what your stepmothers actions bother or shape you” she whispered and held her close for several moments before she let go. Even now physical contact was hard, yet for a few minutes she had been able to comfort someone who needed it. Watching her she nodded, she had to go home to help her family. She had seen people feel the same way, siblings who needed them among others.
“You will come home Kailana…I believe in you and so will the others” she paused, her eyes on her as she stood and walked slowly “when you do the interviews…tell everyone about your stepmother, about your siblings who need you they will eat that up and be lining up to help you…Ceaser will only help” she told her. It was the advice that she could give, yet she knew one other thing as she sat down she paused “look at me” she whispered.
“When I was…in the arena, I had to think of coming home to Finnick, my parents use your siblings to give you something to stay sane with…to keep going” she whispered. “To not end up as big of a mess as I am” she whispered and looked away.

Kailani couldn't help but feel comforted in the arms of her mentor. She was happy that she had gotten all that off her chest. She had the scars to prove the beatings. Well she had one of them at least. She wouldn't let the prep team do anything about it. She had kept it to remind her that she was who she was. She had others to fight for and she had to fight for herself. In the end she was sure she'd be just fighting for herself. When she had something to prove she would do everything that she possibly could do to prove that she was better that she could handle it all. It was something that at times scared Kona. Kona was also the only one that could calm her down usually. It was just nice that Annie had been able to do the same thing. There were better things to live for then proving to her step mother that she was worthy of life.
As Annie spoke Kailani listened. She was hanging on the woman's every word. It was odd for her to be doing something like that but she wanted to advice and the ability to due her best to get sponsors. She knew very well that her stylist was one of the best allies she had before going into the games. He was there to make her look pretty and make people fall in love with the sexual appeal that she had. She couldn't help but smile as he praised her beauty. It was odd in a way as she never thought of herself as beautiful. She knew what others said she just didn't think it.
When Annie mentioned Olivia, Kailani was happy to know that she had at least on person who was in her pocket. One person who could help her out. She wandered who else after the interviews would do the same. As the words about the interviews came from Annie, she listened closely. "Caesar really is that genius of a man. I'm glad." She smiled softly at her mentor. Annie looked away from her and Kailani's smile faded for her face. "Annie you aren't a complete mess. If you were you wouldn't be able to give me the advice. You never leave the arena even if you win do you?" Kailani was hoping that wasn't true. She'd heard rumors she was good at listening around. However, it seemed one never truly left the arena. They had to come back every year and watch tributes die in hopes of bring back just one. No Annie was a strong person to be able to do that. "You have Finnick you came home to him. And you are willing to help us even when you know the odds. Annie that makes you strong. It makes you stronger than you think. In the darkest of times you can at least give me a little hope. Hope that it might actually be possible for me to get home. Hope that if I do the right things now I have a better chance of survival. You aren't a complete mess." Kailani believed in a long healing process and she knew that not everything would ever be healed. She hoped against better judgement that when she came home she wasn't going to wish to kill herself and she hoped that her siblings would still want her. if she lost them she would indeed go crazy.

Something about this girl made her care for her, made her want to make sure that she would come home or at least do her best to do it so she could be there. Sighing quietly she took a breath and watched the young one, she had an innocence to her even now that was rare among the careers she thought and ran a hand through her hair and closed her eyes and took a breath. “The games are what they always have been a way to be reminded of the past and how…weak we are in the future” she admitted after several moments and shook her head in thought. The capital liked even the best districts kept weak, and that was showing no signs of changing any time soon.
“Your stylists and ceaser will make you shine, that is their job to make you that way and in the end your personality will be a good mix”. She thought of Finnick as she spoke, when he had entered the games she had seen him change several times since then. Her eyes grew sad as she looked at Kia and paused “when the game ends and when you win, you may very well be approached by the capital. Take the threat seriously, if it does come you and your brothers cannot afford a no” she whispered and bowed her head.
She knew all too well what happened when people said no, she believed that she had been reaped because Finnick had said no when he wanted the young man. Of course he had been told that everything was okay, yet they should have known better and that was proven when she had been forced to enter the arena. They had hoped that she would die there, yet she had emerged a victor and returned home when the games had finished. Shaking her head she closed her eyes and slowly settled down and looked away from Kai and took a breath.
“You never leave the Arena when you win, some people take it better than others but we are all crazy in some way” she admitted and shrugged her eyes looked out the window. She was having a few good moments, where she could think clearly which was a nice feeling. “some do drugs, some are violent and some are just lost in their own heads…you lose yourself when you are in the arena and what comes out, is not the best person but you do come out changed…it can’t be helped” she whispered and rubbed her arms.
Her words were touching after a pause she hugged the girl close and just sighed, she didn’t want to let her go into the arena. Even now if she could she may have taken the young girls place, to help her get home. “There is always hope Kai, even in the darkest times one can find light if only they remember to turn on the light” she smiled faintly and closed her eyes and sighed softly and slowly relaxed where she sat with her in thought.
“you have family to come home to as well, you have me and Finnick people who will be there to guide you” she whispered and finally let go of her even though she hated to do it the girl was a sweet girl and one that was gentle. Sighing quietly she ate a few bites of food and slowly tried to keep her thoughts together, she hated when she would be in the middle of a conversation and then it would be gone. Where she would lose every thought that she had in her head at that moment she closed her eyes and took a breath. “Just remember when you get home that people will see you differently, it can’t be helped and does change over time a person can be unsure of how to speak to you or talk” she spoke softly and sighed quietly. When she had come back people had no idea what to do with her, she had been considered dangerous until Finnick had stepped in and made sure that she was kept safe. “When you get home just remember, we will be almost right next door you can always come and find me or him and we will be here for you” she offered her a soft smile.
Support when you got home was hard to find at first, people were excited yes but in the end they saw that you had changed. You were not who entered the arena and at times you were seen as a murderer by people who had known you in the past. She watched her briefly and paused she knew that she had to say something, something that was not all gloom and doom for her to have on her mind. Her eyes stayed on the food as she tried to think of how to comfort the young woman.
“I will take care of your brother’s win or lose, they will be safe” she whispered to her trying to be a friend. She had worried about her family when she had gone in, and worried about Finnick. She would make sure that they did not starve and maybe find a way to make sure they were away from the abuse that they suffered. “The main thing is to remember what you have learned and use it” she admitted and sighed quietly her eyes on her again as she paused. “The lessons, are meant to keep you alive in the arena don’t forget them” she whispered as they ate.
It was the best advice she could think of at the moment, the lessons you did learn saved many people’s lives. It was how one survived him the arena and that was what mattered. The careers had won more because they knew how to play the games. It was the same most years unless that year the pack sucked which it happened some years, yet most years they were around at the end.
Looking at Kia just hoped that this year that it would be her coming home.

Kailani ate and watched Annie as she did so. She knew people changed and she had heard the rumors. She didn't see the victors as murders there was a part of her that couldn't see them that way. She could think of it but she couldn't see it. It was harder to see it now that she was here. They were being forced to kill to live and honestly that was not murder. It was self defense. They were all defending themselves. It had been something she had learned to do in the academy. It was why when she was with her brother that she had become dangerous. Sure Jack probably won alot more than she ever did but she wasn't in it for the fame and glory or the junk food at the end of the fight. She was there to live and to win the chance to live freely. It was the same here. She wanted to live and live for all those who couldn't. Live for the ones that had died every year and been pushed into it. Live for the herself in a freedom that she had never thought possible even if it wasn't pure freedom. She knew things wouldn't go exactly as planned but she had people to go home too. People to protect and she would fight to keep them protected despite what that might mean to her. She had too because if she didn't who else would.
She looked over at Annie when she started to talk once again. She already liked her stylist and even more so of Caesar. She thought the man was a genius. She coudn't wait to meet him even if she hadn't been exactly upfront and true to Lex when he had been impersonating him. That boy was going to be one of the first to go. If she set her eyes on him he was out of the game. So long as she had a weapon. She felt in the back of her mind a little bad for thinking that way but you had to think that way. You had to find the ones you could kill off easy. Direct that tribe that way and only fight if you needed too. That was her plan. However, she knew that the instant either of the four drew blood there was going to be no stopping them. it was a curse of something with four and some of the other careers. Once first blood was drawn they went into a frenzy and would kill anything around them. of course she would do so with brains and strategy. She wanted it that way and she needed to do that. She smirked inwardly to herself. She wasn't going to let that be know just yet. After all it would be like releasing an ace from up her sleeve. Yes she could be pure and innocent and gentle. However, the girl that was going into the arena would flip off a switch and act like the girl she was in the academy and then some. She had not survived the abuse because she was a pussy or anything of the likes. She had survived and sent her abuser to the hosptial at least once before she could wait and she could stike out at just the right time.
"I'll take anything they say seriously. I'm not gonna let anything happen to my family. I'd die before I let something happen to them." She was dead serious when she opened her mouth. Mara still had time to get into the games and she didn't want to see Mara in the games. Kona was out of it but Mara wasn't. She didn't want her brother's ship going down either. No she would do what the capitol wanted of her because if she didn't then all things would go down in flames. She wanted her freedom but she didn't want it if it meant that it killed off the people in her life she cared the most about. It took her a second to realize that she was being hugged. She calmed down not even realizing she was being tense at all. She felt calm and happy in Annie's arms. It reminded her of her mother hugging her when she was a little girl before Mara. Before everything went to hell in a hand basket. It was like feeling her parents both hugging her in Annie's arms. She didn't want it to stop but she knew it was going too. Her hands wrapped around the other woman until they let go of each other.
She was hanging still on all of Annie's words. The lessons she learned she would use. After all she would have to use them as she was going to need to survive. "i'm glad you'll be there to help me." She was very glad that Finnick and Annie would be there to help her. She wasn't sure she would be okay with people looking at her differently but then again she wasn't really one to care about that. She just didn't want to be called a murder to her face. Everything else she could simply do away with. If someone tried to hurt her siblings though. There would likely be no stopping her from whooping their asses. "Thank you...my brother and little sister need the protecting. Our stepmother is evil." She smiled and went back to eating her food. "I wont forget your words or the lessons I learn. I know what needs to be done it will be doing it that may be a bit hard. I've never had to kill before. But I have come close to doing so. I did what i had to do to protect my siblings and I'll do it again to get home to them." She wasn't trying to sound all high and mighty but she wanted to assure Annie that she would keep up her end of the bargin.
Kailiani would fight and do what she could to get her sponsors and make it easy for Annie and Finnick to get four the sponsors they needed. She knew how this game worked and she would work it to their advantages. She had to there was no questions in that. ________________________________________________- wordcount: 1047

“when that gong sounds you can’t be human anymore, humans have emotions and would pause when the time came they are just like the meat puppets that you fought in school, just sacks of meat nothing more…nothing less” she whispered. Pain showed in her voice, she had known that rule and yet she had gone in and seen that meat sack his head chopped off and it had broken her she had yet to feel normal since that day, she shuddered and closed her eyes and took a breath and calmed her thoughts and mind. When she let them run she was gone, she didn’t want to end this now where they were speaking so calmly to each other. She did care about the girl, in a motherly way she brushed her hand through Kai’s hair.
“They will be safe you have my word we will find a way to make sure, they will not have the hell that came on you” she whispered. She would do her best weather the girl won or lost to take care of the brothers that were there. She closed her eyes and sighed, she knew Kai would be one that could be a winner. Even now she saw a look in those eyes, the determination and everything was there in them she had hopes that she would hold Kai again when the time came. Taking a breath she looked at her.
“no matter what happens, know I will be proud watching you…and tonight, I would consider one of the nicest nights I have had in a while” she admitted as she soon finished, even now she never over ate she knew the effects when she went back home. Drinking from a glass, she took a breath and calmed herself down as she closed her eyes and paused. “You have to do whatever it takes to win, in the end if you don’t it’s over and your body is among the others…lie cheat and steal…just come home to” she paused. “Family,” she finished and looked down at her and realized that was what she had started to feel for her…a mother’s protectiveness.
She had not bonded with any other that she had come across since she had won, it was almost alien to her and yet here she was. She wanted to help this girl, to bring her home and just hold her and brush her fears away. Pausing she reached up and touched her face, “I don’t mean just your brothers, mentoring does not end when the games are over…you can always come to me and I will…try and be there” she bowed her head as she realized that she could not always keep that promise, her mind was so gone some days she was sure not even Kia could reach her.
“I will do my best to bring the people in, you have a personality that they will eat up” she admitted and smiled lightly. She had seen the news several times, district four was one of the favored districts and had the news on them at least two or three times a day. Kai had admirers that were already in love, it was just making sure that they did what was needed to make things happen. Pausing she nodded as the female avox came over and cleaned her dishes without a sound, the young girl had been taken from the districts years ago. She had seen her when she had come in, a simple red head who was as silent as the rest.
“as mentors bed, is big enough for two and I know Finnick won’t mind…if you would like, you can stay with me tonight maybe we can both get a full night’s sleep” she offered and sat on the couch and rubbed her head to clear her thoughts.

Kailani was going to get home. She was not going to let her admirers down. Sure she hid her toughness and everything else. She needed too she had too. Kailani was smart and she was beautiful. She was going to use it to her advantage she just had to figure out how she was going to use it. She had climbed the ropes to the awe and amazement of the others. Even practing on them kept her at the top of her game. Robes she understood and could do anything with. If she could just get her hands on something to tie someone up with. She could do plenty of damage. Her beauty was a very good assest to have. She knew she was going to have to lure in men and she could do that. She would do that. When Annie told her she could not be human anymore she understood. She understood very well what that meant. She had flipped that channel when she had sent her step mother to the hosptial. She had done it in the academy when they were playing games.
The only problem with that was the fact that Kona was there to bring her out of it. When she did it this time she wasn't sure anyone was going to bring it out of it. She wasn't sure she wanted someone to be able to bring her out. If she wasn't human if she had no emotions she would make her through it. She would go home. She would have Kona then but would he be able to help. it was a fear she had. It was why she needed Annie and Finnick to be there through the whole thing. She was really glad. Annie's hand through her hair made her feel safe and relax. "Thank you...you are reminding me of my mom." Tears began to cloud her eyes. She could win this but it was safe. It was safe to cry infront of her mentor right? She had to show the weakness before if she couldn't do that she was going to burst. "My mother will help you if I die. You all have to protect Mara. You have to protect my little sister while my big brother is out fishing." Mara was more than her little sister she was her kid. She would do anything for the younger girl.
She would do as Annie said. She would lie, cheat, steal, and well seduce if she had too. "its been a wonderful night." She finished up eating and then watched the avox. "I'll take you up on that offer. I think we'll both sleep better." She sat down next to Annie and snuggled into her mentor. She needed this it woud get her through the rest of it. She would make district four proud she would do everything she had to do to win. She would flaunt the natural beauty she had

She had felt this bond only with one person besides her family, Finnick yet it was there again with Kai. The small girl had found her heart and won it quickly in the small time that they had been together, her eyes closed as she sat down and watched the young woman. She would change and grow in the arena, when you walked in you were never were prepared for what you saw. When she had gone in had she known that she would see her friends head fall from his body, she would have stayed away from him. Sighing quietly, she slowly settled in and smiled when she agreed.
“You can cry around me, I am not judging you” she whispered and hugged her as she laid down and held her close hand stroking her hair slowly. Enough people had done that since she had come here, sometimes you just needed to let it out as she laid with her she pulled a blanket over them and paused “don’t be afraid to talk to me Kai, I am your friend and will always listen” she whispered to her and smiled down at her eyes so soft. She had motherly instincts slowly kicking in and it showed, she had never thought of being one after the games yet…here she was.
“I will find her and your brother, they will be safe” she whispered. Of course that didn’t mean she could always do it, her sister could be a part of the games but she could be there and help. They both could should she not come home, eyes closing she yawned and snuggled in with her and held her close “you can always be yourself with me, I promise” she whispered hoping she could keep that promise. Some days she was so far gone, that you could barely get her to talk…yet she would do her best here.
How many more nights she would be able to do this she had no idea, but she could be there that night. When she watched Kai go into the arena, a part of her would be heart broken she closed her eyes and kissed Kais head and hugged her close as she closed her eyes slowly but was still awake.

Kailani hardly cried infront of her own family. Crying infront of her mentor or anyone here at this point in time seemed so wrong but she couldn't help it. She couldn't help but to let it out and let the fasacde fall. She was a seventeen year old girl that did not want to kill anyone. She didn't even want to be here. She wanted to die at sea like her father had. Like everyone in her family had before her. She had wanted to be put out to sea when she died. She did not want to be in this hell whole. She cried softly into her mentor while snuggling. She felt Annie bring the covers over them. She heard her words about no judging her. She was glad of that much. She was glad that Annie was a friend and not an enemy. She was glad that Annie was her mentor. She would take no other person from for. No other victor. She wanted to always be by Annie's side. She didn't care if her mentor had bad days. Everyone had bad days. It was something that happened when you were put into a situation where you had to fight your way through it. You had to see friends die. You had to watch people die. It had to do a number on a person.
Kai smiled when she said that she would find her siblings. That was all Kai needed to calm herseld down more. She liked being herself around Annie. "When we get home, I have to take you out fishing." She said softly as she rested her head against Annie's shoulder. She was slowly going to drift off to sleep. It didn't really take her long to do so. She felt the kiss on her head and snuggled into the hug more before her eyes closed and she was out like a light. She had been training so hard lately that being in such a relaxed state with Annie caused her to fall asleep rather quickly. "Thank you." She mumbled just as the darkness of sleep took her into his arms.
