Rue Tacey Gevins was born the first of six children to loving, but poor parents in District 11. Her mother died giving birth to the youngest, Priela. Her father struggled to raise six children all on his own, but long hours and exhaustion led to his death in an accident in an orchard. The six children were sent to live with their aunt.
Rue's childhood alternated between being the big sister and bubbly, curious girl. She'd always felt responsible for her siblings, which made her a reliable sister and hard worker in the fields. She was trusted with tasks often reserved for the older kids. But often, the times she loved best were the ones she spent climbing trees all the way to the top and singing with the mockingjays. She had a passion for music, learning what she could of guitar, drums, violin, recorder, and anything else she could get her hands on. She loved to explore and laugh, to run around with the other kids.
The year Rue turned 12 was her biggest turning point. Just before her birthday, she had seen her cousin Furrow publicly beaten to unconciousness just for stealing a little food. She'd befriended a sweet boy from the Capitol after a chance trip there, who filled her with hope for a better future. But after a single trip to District 11 - in which he too has seen the whipping - she never saw him again. Then, there were the Hunger Games. The Gevins clan had never paid much attention to the Hunger Games, not really, but suddenly Rue was wearing one of her aunt's old dresses and standing in a crowd with the other 12-year-olds. She'd been afraid to turn 12, and that fear had been real standing in that crowd. Two kids she didn't know had been reaped, but her heart broke for them. And when the Games began, she couldn't help but watch the awful mess.
Both tributes from Eleven had died, of course, and their deaths sat heavy in her heart. Her sweet, bubbly nature quieted, and she threw herself more into both school and the field. She became less patient with Tauren, the sibling she had always been closest to. He was a boy filled with hope and joy, and his naive nature started to wear on her after all she'd seen. Despite that though, he continued to be her reminder of what it meant to really enjoy life, while her sister Kenara remained the reminder of how dark the world could become.
When she was 15, a terrible sickness started spreading through their neighborhood. Tauren was the first to come down with it, and within days he appeared on the brink of death. Aunt Olivia and Kenara acted as his nurses while Rue looked after the others, and Tauren did finally recover. But when they finally noticed Kenara had caught the same illness, her decline was too rapid. Kenara was always quiet and often pessimistic, but she never complained about herself. Even her twin didn't notice until it was too late, and no amount of work on anyone's part could save her. Three days later, she was gone.
At 16, Rue left school not because she was dropping out, but because she had finished it. She could have finished earlier, probably, but she liked school. There was one college she might have attended, but since there was no money, Rue's newfound freedom was devoted to the fields. She worked full time now, mostly in the orchards.
