Fifteen minutes before the performance.
Madge had told Gale to wait outside for just a minute while she got changed. The room she was in was pretty big. One of the long sides of the wall was a whole mirror, and the lights were kind of dim for a dressing room The long pink gown she was to wear was hung up next to the door, and black heels were below it. The stylist assigned to her did do a great job. It had been a busy day for the both of them, though she couldn't be exhausted yet. Exhaustion was the last thing on her mind. She was practically shaking as she was putting on the silk dress. She hoped that she wouldn't be too nervous up there or else she would mess up. Madge knew she couldn't, as she had been practicing the same piece three times a day since she heard she won the contest. But one thing would be different tonight: Gale would be listening.
That thought made her the most nervous. She didn't want to mess up or be terrible in front of Gale. The other people didn't matter to her--she would never see them again. Tonight she was only playing for the brown-haired man that, in a way, changed her life. She would be playing with more emotion than she ever had before. She was almost desperate for Gale to like it, though if he didn't, she would completely understand. It wasn't music for everyone, and as far as she knew, she might not play her best tonight. But she wanted tonight to be the only night she played amazing, even if it was the last time she played amazing in her life. She wanted Gale to hear her, and to her, that was all that mattered.
She was done slipping on her dress, but she realized that she wasn't able to zip it up. She knew she needed to ask Gale to help her no matter how embarrassing it was. Madge opened the door slightly and saw Gale in a suit. She had seen her father wear one multiple times for parties he threw at the mansion. She also noticed his tie was undone, and she knew exactly how to do that. She didn't say anything just yet though. "Hey, can you help me with something?" She asked. Her face flushed with red. She looked and saw nobody was in the hallway. "I need help zipping up my dress. Sorry you have to do this," she said in a lower voice. She wondered if he minded.
Madge then walked deeper in the room. She could see herself walking in the mirror and saw Gale behind her. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She couldn't let Gale see her nerves. Madge wanted to be confident around him, especially since he had dressed up for the occasion. She opened her eyes, and in the mirror, just for a second, the two of them almost looked like a couple. Madge couldn't help but smile. WORD COUNT: 514 TAG: @hawthorne NOTES: beyond cheesy haha i love it

The Capitol wasn’t anything Gale had expected. Each new thing he saw - which happened to be basically everything - took his breath away. It was hard to think that he once thought the Merchant District of 12 to be fancy.
Stylists preened over him, asking long strings of questions as they circled around him like brightly colored vultures. Thankfully, they left him to dress alone, leaving no chance for them to see the horrid scars across his back. The suit was surprising, too. He had seen them on others before, mostly on the small televisions playing reels from the Capitol, but he didn’t imagine that they would be so uncomfortable and restrictive. And that wasn’t even to include the tie, which he stared at for a full five minutes before attempting weakly to make it into something vaguely resembling a decent looking knot. After an embarrassingly long time of trying to tie it, he sighed and let it hang around his neck, sure that some crazed stylist would come and pick over his appearance before the performance.
Gale left his own room and stood in the hall, waiting for Madge to emerge. She’d been whisked away almost as soon as they arrived in the Capitol, and he felt nervous for her company. In the sea of unfamiliarity, she was an anchor.
Gale stood, examining the golden design on the rich carpet when the door creaked open, offering his first glimpse at a transformed Madge. Her dress was a beautiful shade of pink that suited her as well as the cut did. When she spoke, the color that spread across her cheeks matched her gown, and she looked as beautiful as Gale had ever seen her. Madge’s request made him laugh lightly, though it also made his pulse quicken. He too glanced down the hall, then stepped inside the room with her. He hesitated at the door for a brief moment, then decidedly pushed it closed with the heel of his shoe.
Gale crossed the room and came to stand much closer behind her than was required. He bit at the edge of his lip. Gale felt himself sliding towards dangerous territory.
Her long, light brown hair hung down her back. Gale saw her looking in the mirror, and he looked there, too. It was as if for this single moment in their lives, they were anybody but simple citizens of 12. They were beautiful, and their eyes shone with a mutual happiness that proclaimed deep satisfaction. Holding her gaze in the mirror, Gale reach up and swept her hair off her back, letting it fall over her shoulders.
Between the open zipper, an entire plane of her pale skin was left exposed. With a slightly shaking hand, Gale reach up to pull the zipper shut. A single finger brushed at her skin as closed the zipper, and somehow, it felt like the most intimate thing he’d ever done.
Gale bit at the inside of his lip before speaking. Although his task was completed and her dress zipped, he hadn’t managed to budge. ”You look absolutely gorgeous, Madge,” he said, more breathless than he imagined himself sounding.

Madge really loved the Capitol. It was everything more than she imagined. The beautiful lights, the strange people, and especially the treatments she had been given today. But all of those thoughts were pushed to the back of her mind the moment Gale entered the room. It was the two of them in a city of thousands, but with the door closed, she felt like they were the only two in the world. The silence was welcoming after a long day. But to Madge, it was strange. She had never been truly been alone with Gale. They were always outside where other people could see and listen to them. It was the opposite now, and the nervous girl didn't know how to react. She thought to herself to just be normal, but with Gale being the only person in the room? It wasn't likely for the Undersee girl.
She turned to face the mirror while Gale got behind her. She could feel his breath on her shoulder, and his warmth against her body. He was stunning tonight. She never thought she'd see him in a suit, but there he was. The setting was as intimate as ever for Madge. She had only kissed a boy once, in the 5th grade, but Madge had never felt this intimate with a man before. She also never thought it would be with Gale either. He then brushed her hair onto her shoulder. The hair on the back of her neck stood up as she held her gaze with him. She let her hair fall onto her shoulders. This was much more than just a friend helping out a friend. She could see that Gale knew that just as much as she did. She was glad her father or anyone else wasn't here. Gale made her feel more than just excitement and happy. He made her feel exposed and loved. It was a strange combination, but Madge couldn't explain it any other way.
Madge then felt Gale zip up the zipper on the back of her dress. It made her have goosebumps, but she didn't care about those now. His hand was warm and it was something that felt so real. It didn't feel like something that was forced, nor did it feel like a gesture of kindness. She wondered if things would be the same back in District 12. Would she even be able to stay friends with him after this? She didn't know. The recital didn't even cross her mind at this very moment. She watched Gale in the mirror. He was stunningly striking, but she never realized it until now. Maybe it was the lighting or the suit or his warm touch. She didn't know, but all she wanted was for this moment to last forever.
Gale broke the silence as he spoke, but he spoke as if he adored the silence between them. It was soft and genuine, and it made her cheeks flush with red. His words almost felt like a whisper in her ear with how close he was. She didn't want him to move, though. She loved his closeness. She then turned around to face him. She was just as close to him as they were before. She looked up at him and smiled. She didn't even have words to describe how great he looked. "You look amazing," she said to him. "All you need is your tie done," she said with a light chuckle. She put her hands on the tie, and her knuckles brushed his chest. She evened it out, and worked the tie through the loops and knots. She never kept her touch away from his chest though. She felt like the silence between them would break if that were to happen.
Once she was finished, she smiled. She held onto his tie. "There, now you're perfect." Madge said. She looked at him and back at his tie. Her words lingered in the silent room. She needed to focus, but Gale in front of her was something she couldn't focus on. He was just too stunning. She then wrapped her arms around him and pulled him close to her. She had done the same before they left for the Capitol, but this time, she felt like it was more than needed. "Thank you for everything," she said in a low voice. She was almost whispering because she didn't want to break the intimacy between them, and she felt like if she spoke loudly, the moment would end. And right now, she feared that this moment, this perfect moment, would end abruptly. WORD COUNT: 770 TAG: @hawthorne

Gale watched helplessly as Madge took her turn, tying his tie expertly. At a different time, he might have made some sort of joke about the ability, but he couldn’t bear to disturb the moment that he felt building. When her hands didn’t stray away from his chest, he knew that he was gone, past any feasible point of return. He had thought about Madge in this way more than once. She was beautiful, kind, radiant, funny: everything he enjoyed in a person. And here she was, standing only inches away from him. His breath caught in his throat. He’d been with girls before, but he never felt this nervous. The room felt much hotter than it had been before.
She pulled him into a hug, and Gale exhaled a breath he wasn’t aware he’d been holding. Instead of hugging her exactly as he did the last time, he instead allowed one hand to find the hair at the nape of her neck and pull her closer. Gale had not yet managed words since she touched him, but he felt some slipping off his tongue. ”I should be the one thanking you,” he said, the words more jumbled and heavy than he intended.
Gale looked directly into her eyes and, in that moment, made his decision. The hand in her hair slipped forward to her jaw in a painfully slow way. It was so drawn out and excruciating. Gale was left dying to kiss her. His fingers reached the tip of her chin. Gale gently angled her face upwards, then every wall within him broke apart.
His lips were on hers in a second, any thought of who her father was or where she lived in exile somewhere else in his mind. Gale needed her, needed this, more than he’d imagined.
The moment their lips collided was a shred away from absolute perfection, which could be sealed by only Madge’s response, and in that very brief moment of waiting, Gale’s heart skipped a beat in his chest.

Madge knew that Gale had done so much more than just come here with her. Though he didn't know it, he slowly let Madge feel emotion again. When she was with him, she didn't feel guilt when she was with him. She didn't feel the class difference. She always thought of them as a boy and a girl together, with no background and no baggage. She felt like she was living in the present with him. For that, and for everything he had done for her, she really thanked him with the whisper. He made her feel loved when everyone else in her community made her feel terrible for being upper class. He was the one person there for her, and she wouldn't do anything to change that. She was in the Capitol with the perfect man in the perfect setting. Nobody was going to let her feel selfish for her being happy in this moment. This moment belonged to Mr. Hawthorne and Ms. Undersee, and everybody else didn't matter. Not Katniss, not her father--nobody.
And as he kissed her, she felt like they were on top of the world. They were invincible, and nothing could touch them. She put the tips of her fingers up to his neck, feeling his warm lips press against hers as she pressed back. His lips were soft, a feature she wasn't expecting with his rough hands and body. She could feel his passion for her. There was no turning back now. She wouldn't want to anyways. They had crossed the boundary between friendship and relationship. Madge didn't know where they could go now, but all she cared was being in his presence. To her, he mattered more than anybody else.
But the door opened, and a man walked into the room. She pulled back and looked at the man in shock. She still stood close with Gale, but the only thing she had been afraid of had happened. "Sorry for interrupting, but five minutes until leave, Ms. Undersee," he said. She nodded and grinned at the man. "Thank you, I'll be right out." She said to him. The man left and she sighed. She put her head against his chest, but she was smiling nonetheless. "I almost forgot that we aren't completely alone right now," she said with a light laugh. She was speechless about the kiss. What should she say? Thank you? You're great? But she realized that being speechless was the best option right now. He was brilliant, she knew, but she didn't have to say it. She hoped he would know that, because in all honesty, he was her inspiration to play in the Capitol. WORD COUNT: 449 TAG: @hawthorne

The way Gale saw it, everyone was allowed a certain amount of miracles in their life. He already had a few: one, for example, was not dying after the whipping in the Square. Oftentimes, the miracles felt few and far in between. But in the massive and rich dressing room in the Capitol, Gale received another as Madge kissed him back. His heart hammered in his chest at the feeling. By far, it was the most intimate he ever remembered any situation being. Just as he moved to deepen the kiss and expand the miracle, the door swung open.
Fortunately, the intruder seemed indifferent to their affection. Gale knew though that even though the man left, the moment was behind them. In its place, a new one was about to begin. In just five minutes, Madge was going to step out on stage in the Capitol and perform and he would watch on, basking in pride.
Gale smiled as she laid her head against his chest as if it were the most natural thing in the world, as if just two minutes ago they weren’t anything more than friends. “Mm,” he commented, wrapping an arm around her, “that’s pretty impressive. It’s hard to forget the Capitol.”
Really, the most impressive thing to Gale was Madge’s attitude. If he were in her place, he’d be out of his mind nervous, pacing the floor and tapping his feet and wringing his hands. Gale was almost never panicky but the concept of performing on stage in front of the Capitol and on live television was beyond him. He was so proud to see her confidence and know that she would carry it out and perform so well. “You’ll do so well, Madge,” he promised.

Madge found it strange yet great that the two were getting used to each other in the best of ways. When she picked Gale to come to the Capitol, she never thought that this would happen. She never thought Gale would touch her in a more than platonic way, and she never thought that she would do the same. It was a rush of excitement for her, yet she was still so nervous--both about the performance and her new, sort-of relationship with Gale. He was something good that had come in her life. He was someone that she could express herself to and not be afraid. But even now, with the future unknown, she wasn't sure what would happen between the two of them. She was felt terrified that when they got back to District 12, they wouldn't be more than just friends. Maybe he would be scared of what people would say about the mayor's daughter and the whipped man, or maybe he had to continue whatever he had with Katniss. Nonetheless, she really hoped that he wouldn't leave her alone.
She laughed when he said that she forgot about the whole Capitol. "Well you're pretty distracting Gale, that's for sure," she said with a smile. Madge just wanted to stay in this room with him. She wanted time to stop. She just wanted to spend every last minute with Gale before she performed, and she wished those minutes would last hours. Time flew by when she wasn't paying attention. The naive girl just wanted to have the support of Mr. Hawthorne, and when he said that she would do well, she knew she had his blessing.
"I just hope I don't mess up. That's a lot of people to let down." Madge knew that, when she played, she never saw faces in a crowd, only bodies. Whether there was one or a thousand. But tonight, there would be a face, and that would be Gale. When she played her song, she would put as much emotion into it as she felt the last couple minutes.
She then looked at the door and back at Gale. She stepped back. "I guess I should go," she said to him, sighing. "But I'll see you out there, right? I know these people can be a little snobby, but if you can handle me, I think you can handle them." Madge managed to let out a little laugh. Maybe it was the nerves letting it out, or maybe it was the fact that she was nervous for Gale in a large crowd of Capitolites. WORD COUNT: 436 TAG: @hawthorne

When Madge played the piano, she played with her whole body. Gale could see every note as it ripped from her soul and filled the room. From the first moment of her performance, he understood why Madge won the competition. She became one with the music, enveloping herself in each tone and sound. He could have watched her like that, all perfection and talent radiating from the stage. Madge made him forget where he was, who he was sitting among. Too soon, the last note filled the room. The second it faded, he was the first up from his seat, clapping his hands together so hard they hurt. Almost immediately the rest of the room joined him. The sound was deafening in the best way. Gale beamed with pride. ————— — ————
Outside, Gale waited. In one hand, he clutched in one hand a massive bouquet of monstrous, unnaturally colored roses. They felt too artificial and fabricated to be real flowers. But a man with a camera shoved him into Gale’s hand and insisted on his presenting them to Madge for the shot. Gale didn’t care. He just wanted to see Madge. One day back in 12, he would do better. For now, the strange Capitol roses would do, though. The stage door opened and Madge stepped out. Losing any care he had left about the cameras, Gale stepped forward immediately and wrapped his arms around her. “That was the best thing I’ve seen in my life,” he whispered into her hair. Gale felt so many unanswered questions bouncing in his mind but forced himself to not care. For now, he had this moment. All he could do was make the most of it. Words: 300 Tags: @madge

When Madge played, she played with vigorous emotion. She hadn't let anyone see her play before except for her father and mother, and even though she was nervous when she first went in, she convinced herself that she was playing at her father's home again just like she had been only a couple days ago. She wanted it to reach the people in the audience, to show them that she wasn't just some district girl who was in the wrong place. She had won a contest, and even if she was the only one who entered, she still played like she had beaten a thousand people. She deserved to be here, and after everything that had gone on with Gale only a few minutes before, her emotions when playing the piano showed more than ever. When she tapped each key, she made sure that all of her force was put into it. In her life, she hadn't shown more emotion than she did while playing the piano in front of the audience, and most of all, in front of Gale. When it was over, she let the sound linger for a couple moments. She was sweating, which was something she didn't normally do, but her playing took so much out of her.
She took a bow and walked off stage, only wanting to see Gale. She didn't care about interviews or pictures, and she didn't really care about the party either. With the way she played, she did it for Gale. If he hadn't been here, she didn't know what she would do. She knew that she would have played a lot worse. Madge saw Gale with flowers, surprised at where he had gotten them, but she was least worried about the flowers. She walked to him and hugged him like that had held each other a million times over. He had always meant a lot to her, and now, he meant even more. She grinned largely, shaking more now than she had been during the performance.
Madge didn't care about anyone else around them. Whether there were being pictures taken, people talking about them, or the partygoers watching the two. When he whispered to her and said it was the best thing he had ever seen, she laughed a little that was followed by a blush. She wondered if that was true. There were so many better things than that. "I wouldn't say that," she said smiling. "People winning the games is a lot better than this. I'm just a piano player." She knew that she probably should've kept her mouth shut, but she couldn't help it. "I'm just so glad you're here with me." WORD COUNT: 448 TAG: @hawthorne

Gale could feel the cameras on his back as he held Madge in his arms. From what he learned with Prim, the next morning would probably be marked by magazines dotting the various stands in the Capitol bearing this image. For the Capitolites, gossip was everything. It was why they ran around with their large, intricate cameras in the District, why they'd showed up his front door right as he was leaving for the mines one morning, demanding random tidbits of information for an interview. Gale was more than a little concerned that Madge would somehow be broken by the Capitol. Gale couldn't understand the place. The people looked strange, wearing bright colors and crazy clothing, and speaking in a strange accent. For entertainment, they watched children in a death match, eagerly awaiting the annual event. More than being strange, Gale knew they were bad. The Capitolites trampled and broke beautiful things before running on to find their next thing to toy with. Though logically Gale was aware some catastrophe was very unlikely, his emotions pushed him into worry. Having Madge in his arms, though, felt like he could shield her from all the people in the room, even if it was only for a moment and even if she wasn't necessarily as scared as he was.
Gale laughed when Madge humbled herself. Only half the laugh was with humor. Madge's performance was so far removed from the games that any comparison of the two was laughable. The Games were grotesque and evil, some horrible sort of mistake made by Panem. Madge's concert was art. For the most part, Gale considered art to be useless and a waste. Madge made him understand, though. "Please," Gale said with a laugh, "don't sell yourself short, 'just a piano player.' You're more than just a piano player - you're at least a really good one." Gale's mouth mirrored hers as it spread into a wide smile.
His heart stopped a bit in his chest at Madge's next words. Somehow, they almost felt more serious than the kiss was. Gale stepped back a bit, looking into her eyes. "Believe me, I am too," he agreed. By coming to the Capitol with Madge, it felt like Gale changed everything. After letting out what he felt for her, Gale wasn't sure that he could ever fully return to normal. The feelings he had for her were waiting just beneath the surface. Now that they were allowed to come busting back out, there was no restraining them or even calming them. The craziest thing that Gale wasn't sure that he wanted to.

The two were so different, Madge and Gale. Madge knew it, and she was certain Gale knew it as well. Rich and poor, impulsive and patient, hard-shelled and soft-hearted. Even with their differences staring them in the face, she couldn't help but feel something special for Gale. She always had some sort of crush on him, but she never thought she would act upon it. She thought her father would arrange a marriage for her and she would live her life just like that. But things were different now with Gale in the picture. Suddenly, being held in his arms, she wanted nothing more than to see Gale in her future.
"Thank you, that means so much to me," she told Gale, looking at him as he looked back at her. So many people never noticed her in District 12, just another rich girl who didn't understand what they had to go through. But when she was in the Capitol, people noticed her. It took this long for Gale to notice her as well. It was strange that some harmless flirting would turn into something so special. She had always wanted to live in the Capitol, but she knew that she wouldn't be able to talk much about it if Gale and herself were going to spend more time together. The two had different views on politics, survival, and dress, but that wasn't on her mind now.
She grabbed Gale's hand and smiled at the cameras. Madge looked back at him. "Well, we better go. It's a long train ride back to District 12 tomorrow and I'm pooped. You ready?" She asked. As much as she loved the glam and beauty of the Capitol, she would rather go home and sleep in her own bed. It was a tiring day, both physically and emotionally. She started walking away, waving to the cameras with one hand and Gale's in the other. After years of struggling, at this moment, she was finally happy.
