Ben had been carrying his heart inside his pocket, the words held back behind his lips. I think I love you. I think... I think I love... I love you. He wanted to tell her, wanted her to know that their friendship has grown into something more. At least for him. But there was no way she felt the same. Nessa was Nessa and she would never fall in love with someone like him, not when she had so many to choose from. He knew he should give up, knew that he never stood a chance. She was way out of his league. She was a Victor and he was some loser from District 6 who'd never be anything but a mechanic. "Nessa," her name caught in his throat when he saw her walk into the shop. For some reason, she looked even prettier- no more beautiful today than she ever had. None of the makeup and clothes from the Capitol could make her shine brighter than she did at that moment. "I thought you weren't coming today, are you racing?" He asked, wiping the grease off his calloused hands with the towel he kept in his back pocket. TAGS: @nessa WORDS: 202

Nessa had loved being with her friends again. After the Games, it was the thing she looked forward to the most. She didn't have an abundance of friends, and she wasn't popular in that way, but she had close friends that she really cared about. If she had to name her best friend, it would be Ben. They had been friends since she joined up at the shop. She had always enjoyed hanging out with him, and he was one of the only people who didn't act differently towards her since she had won the games. She didn't like change very much, and Ben's unchanged attitude towards her was something she welcomed.
She usually only went into work five days a week, and two days a week she worked solely with December and on her car for racing. She wasn't getting paid for working, which was on her terms, but she liked to keep on a schedule. Everybody had been a little behind on this month's quota, so Nessa decided that she was going to work a couple extra days this week. She hadn't told anyone, not because she wanted it to be a surprise, but because she honestly forgot. They needed everyone they could get, and Nessa was one more pair of hands.
"Hey Ben!" She said smiling, walking into the shop. He was someone who was at the shop a lot, and she was always glad to see him there. "Nope, not today. I heard we're not on par with the quota this month, so I'm here to lend a hand." She went over to her locker and grabbed her tools and towel. Things at the shop hadn't changed at all since she had been there. She really enjoyed working, and she didn't want to leave. As long as her friends worked there and she loved working on vehicles, she wouldn't be going anywhere.
"Are you down to hang out at the bar after work? I heard some of the guys are going down." Nessa wasn't an alcoholic like the other victors, but she liked hanging out with her friends at the bar and drinking there. The Games didn't affect her much, and she was thankful that she only had to kill one person. Because of that, she didn't really have too much of a traumatic experience except for the occasional nightmare. WORD COUNT: 400 TAG: @benjamin

The days passed like she never ever left, the same Nessa he'd known for years. Not Nessarose the Victor. Ben stopped short just a few paces from her, picking up a wrench and just holding it. It was something to hold, he found that it got harder and harder to talk to her without doing something with his hands. He had to always be fiddling with something or had to stuff them in his pockets. She made him a nervous wreck and she didn't even know it. "Ah yeah," he was about to rub the back of his neck but realize he was still holding a wrench. "I guess I've been slacking a little bit," not just a little. A lot. Even though he threw himself at work, sometimes he caught himself daydreaming. And that's when he made the most mistakes. Some jobs were easy and only required muscle memory. But even then, he'd find himself pouring oil in the wrong places. Even away from work, he was absent minded. He put dishes in the bathroom sink just yesterday. "The other guys can only pick up the slack so much."He was about to turn around and get back to work when she asked. He considered it for a moment, wanting nothing more than to just spend time with her. But the thing was, it wouldn't be just her. The guys would be there, too. Some of them had already figured it out. They'd teased him about it. And he didn't want them letting that slip to Nessa. Not when he should just tell her himself. "Nah... I think I'll just stay a little later and catch up on my work tonight. You have fun." He gave her a small smile. There was no way he'd tell her. She'd laugh at him. Tell him that they were like brother and sister. Or something just as awful. TAGS: @nessa WORDS: 319

Nessa was skeptical of Ben. He was more on edge than usual. Had the pressure of the quota make him like that? She assumed so. He was always a hard worker and always seemed to be hard on himself. But now, she could tell he was stressed when he really shouldn't have been. Maybe he had his mind elsewhere? She hoped that he was alright. In all honesty, she couldn't really tell what was wrong. She wanted to ask, though she didn't want to make him more stressed than he already was. Putting him on the spotlight wouldn't help, she figured.
"Eh, don't worry about it," she said to him about him slacking off. "You'll get back on your feet. You can't be any worse than Spens." She laughed a little as she picked up her tools. Spens was cool, but he was slow as all hell and wasn't too good with working on cars. He usually just did the finishing touches on them. Nessa knew something was distracting him. He was usually a great worker, being better than a lot of the mechanics in the shop. He had been her working partner for as long as she could remember. They would usually get things done at a good speed with minimal error. He was a great worker, though he was short-sighting himself with his work. Nessa would help him pick up the slack, and they would be right on quota in no time.
The brunette walked over a little closer, looking at the car he was working on. It was a standard district one that was only allowed to be driven by Peacekeepers. She looked it over as she listened to him make an excuse not to go drinking. The car was in...worse shape than usual, but it would be an easy repair. "I have a deal for you," she said, walking over to him. "I'll help you with the car and we'll get it done in no time. In return, you come drink with us. It's not any fun without challenging Mr. Kyber to a drinking contest," she said, raising an eyebrow and smiling. But he wasn't going to get off the hook just yet. She was dying to know what was wrong with him even though she knew it was none of her business. "But first, you have to tell me what's wrong. You didn't even put the torque spec on the wheels. What's up? Is your family alright?" She asked. Nessa knew Ben wasn't close with his family, though she really didn't have any idea what was making him so stressed and forget one of the most important parts of being a mechanic. Ben wanted nothing more than to spend time with her, but he wasn't up for spending time with everyone else coming along. It was too much. He'd end up brooding at some corner, watching her have fun and thinking how he wanted to have fun with her, but deciding not too. He felt like a creep. But was it so wrong to want her all to himself? He wasn't sure if she felt the same, she probably didn't. Nessa was too good for him, she was too good for everyone in this shithole district. And she sure as hell deserved better than this life that's been handed to her. It could be worse. But the world, in its entirety, could be better. No games, no dictator, no slave labor. If they had been born in a different time, perhaps he could find some way to make the future in his mind come true. He looked down at the wheels and chuckled. Ben sighed, "just tired I guess. It's..." For a moment he considered telling her. Spilling his heart out on the floor like some desperate puppy in need of love and acceptance. " So how's you and that guy you were seeing, weren't you seeing someone?" He wasn't really sure. With Nessa, it was like she was and she wasn't. So many guys wanted her that it was difficult to keep track of who she gave her attention to when so many wanted it. He knew one of their friends was flirting with her, he'd even told Ben himself. But he wasn't sure if Nessa gave him the time, she probably did by the way his friend was acting. But then again, he had a tendency to exaggerate. TAGS: @nessa WORDS: 290

Nessa honestly didn't understand what was going on. He was acting so weird and strange, something that she wasn't familiar with. She was used to the comfortable, crazy Ben. Not the gloomy, beating-around-the-bush Ben. He was her best friend and they told each other everything. She didn't understand why he was acting so dodgy. Even after everything, he still couldn't tell her what was wrong. She crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. She listened to him talk, knowing that the whole thing came out of nowhere. Even if he was tired and out of it, he never acting like this around her.
He then tried to change the subject, which was a weird topic to talk about. She had never dated anybody, nor did she ever see any guys in a romantic way. Guys either wanted to make love to her or wanted to have her for her status. Nessa was never asked out on a date. She flirted with a lot of people, but it was mostly unintentional. She worked with a lot of guys, and joking around sometimes seemed like flirting. "I see a lot of guys. One of them is you, doofus," she said, laughing a little.
She knew that maybe there was something wrong or going on with one of his friends, or maybe even her. Was there something he didn't like about her? Was there a friend of theirs who was acting differently? "Why? Is there something going on with one of our friends? And why do you keep dodging the question? I know tired Bed would still be on top of things. Is something distracting you from working? You know you can tell me anything." WORD COUNT: 286 TAG: @benjamin

He couldn't help but smile at that. She was so naive about this that it pained him. She had no idea whatsoever how he felt about her. How much seeing her every day and not telling her how he felt was twisting his insides. A part of him wondered if she did see him. If she actually understood him the way he wanted her to. But he'd been blocking her, he'd built up this tall wall against her because he was afraid. Afraid that it would change them, afraid that it would change their friendship. And above all else, their friendship was the most important thing in his life. He had nothing else. If he died tomorrow, he'd have nothing to leave behind, nothing except her. And she had no idea. He looked at her, she was so confused and worried for him. His hands stopped working and put everything down. Wiping his hands on the side of his pant leg, he faced her. "Ness," he said taking a step towards her, "I..." No that was the wrong word. That was the wrong start. He looked down at the smooth stone floor beneath his boots, all dirty with oil and pieces of the earth. Life was dirty and messy. If he died tomorrow, he'd want to know that he lived his life with no regrets. He took a breath. Then took the plunge. "Have dinner with me, tonight. Like a date." WORDS: 242 TAG: @nessa

Nessa looked at Ben, seeing that he put his working things down. She was almost worried for him. She wasn't very good at reading people and their emotions, so it was hard to tell if something was bothering him in a bad way or he was having trouble. She really wanted to help him no matter what. She cared about him, and that was what best friends did. They've known each other for so long that she would normally know what was up. Now, she didn't anything that was going down.
He turned to her seriously. Nessa hoped nothing was extremely wrong. She could tell by the expression on his face that he wasn't joking. When he stepped towards her and spoke, she was extremely worried. Ben was someone who always seemed happy and fun, but he was serious when he started speaking. It was almost heartbreaking.
But when he kept talking, he said something that was the last thing she was expecting. Have dinner with me, tonight. Like a date. Nessa hadn't been asked out like that before. It was something she didn't expect from anyone, especially not Ben. How long had he felt like this? Had he wanted to date her for a long time? She didn't know how to feel about it. On one end, he was basically her mentor when she first started. Back then, she was barely a teen. Now, she was a fully-grown woman with experiences that she would rather forget. But she did care about Ben. She always did. But did she care for him in a romantic way? She didn't know.
"Yeah...okay," she said, nodding. She didn't know how it would go, but if she didn't try, she would never know. It might be weird, but it also might be delightful. She never saw Ben dating anyone before, so part of her wondered if he was gay. But now, she knew that that wasn't it. It was probably her. "How long have you wanted to ask me that?" She asked, curious. WORD COUNT: 350 TAG: @benjamin

There was a moment in which he almost didn't hear her, but at the same time she was the loudest thing in the room. His heart was pounding loud in his ears and right when she said yes, his heart stopped. All those months and years, days and mornings and nights that he thought about her and tried to get up the courage to ask her had lead to this very second. And she said yes. He had no idea what to expect when he asked. He didn't even think, not really. Someone once told him when you want to do something you're nervous or not sure about, count to three and then do it. But he hadn't counted. He just did it. And she said yes. The corner of his lip twitched slightly before they pulled back into a smile. Did she really say yes? He looked down at his greasy hands all gray and dark with grime and oil. Then back up at her. His shoulders relaxed and he let out a breath he had no idea he'd been holding. It was as if this great weight had been lifted off of him, making him lighter, so light that the possibility of floating up to the ceiling like a balloon seemed possible. It was impossible to tell her exactly when he wanted to ask her out. It was little moments that built up to it. A thousand smiles. Every time their eyes found one another. When they laughed at things that for some reason only they found funny. The hundreds of times that they stayed to work later than they should have. There were so many pockets of times when he found himself being drawn to her. His mind pinpointed to a moment, a moment in time in which he had decided he'd ask her out. And then years later, to this moment, he finally did. "One night, I stayed up late working on your motorcycle because you were worried you wouldn't be fast enough for your race the next day. You were pissed about this new kid who was bragging about beating you. Then at three in the morning, you came in the shop and said you couldn't sleep. You kept looking at your motorcycle, trying to find things to improve and change. And I hadn't slept in twenty four hours, so I kind of snapped at you. Do you remember what you said after that?" he said. He wasn't sure if she even remembered what happened that night. It was such a normal night. TAGS: @nessa WORDS: 431

Nessa didn't know how she could be so clueless this whole time. Looking back on it all, she didn't know how she could miss all of the signs. Even now, when he was curious as to who she was seeing, she still didn't see what he was trying to do. It took him literally asking her before she could even see his feelings for her. She felt like an idiot. All of those times where he was trying to say something was clear now. All of the times he looked at her without saying anything she understood. It was a good feeling.
Ben wasn't one to ask her out for her fame or ask her out just to sleep with her. He genuinely cared about her, and it was a feeling that she never really had in her life. Her parents were awful, her aunt didn't care about her in the slightest, and she didn't have anyone in the games to rely on. For once her in life, she felt like someone actually cared about her.
She listened to Ben, talking about the time she went to the shop and Ben was working on her motorcycle. He went through a lot of trouble just to fix a motorcycle that she wanted to go fast. She was sometimes quite blunt, especially when it came to working on cars. When she was telling him specifically what to fix, he snapped at her. Ben rarely snapped too, so that moment was something she remembered well.
"Yeah, I think I remember. I'm pretty sure I just laughed at first. And...hm, I said something along the lines of 'I think I've finally experienced everything with you,' because I hadn't seen you mad before." Nessa smiled. "And then I think you laughed too. Maybe that was a different time, but I think that's what happened." The brunette had no idea how that time would lead to now. All that time Ben could've said something, and he didn't. She hoped it wasn't because she made him feel uncomfortable. WORD COUNT: 346 TAG: @benjamin
