"We have to stop," Fiona panted over Adelie's cries. She didn't wait for Chris' response, only lifted Adelie out of her chest harness and sank onto the ground with the baby. They'd been out here for weeks now. It had taken a long time just to get out of Two, and then they were carefully navigating the forbidden territory between districts. The adrenaline and excitement of the trip had worn off pretty fast, to be replaced with exhaustion and doubt. Fiona had had more time in the tumult of her own mind these past weeks than she'd probably had all of her life. Sure, she wasn't alone - she had Chris and Adelie to talk to - but those long silent stretches had left her mind to touch on everything. Fiona Reán had just left everything she had ever known behind her. Fiona had left what had once been her dream job, to work as a Peacekeeper in any district but the one she'd grown up in. She had left the Academy, where she had friends and a life. She had left her brothers and her father, who she loved so much but felt like she was constantly disappointing. She had left her ex-boyfriend, or ex-best friend, or whatever it was Adelie's father was to her anymore. She had left the memory of Cato, and of his daughter - because yes, she had found out about the daughter he had with some other girl, and that had torn another hole in her heart. Adelie, too, had left things. Fiona's daughter had left a home with two fathers in which she was loved, but one in which Fiona would one day be pushed out of, no matter what happened. Chris had left things too, and Fiona was very aware of it. Despite his admission on the night she came to him, it was still hard to believe that he would do all of this for her. He hadn't complained, or been anything but helpful. Fiona didn't deserve a friend like him, and Adelie didn't deserve a mother like her, but here they were. Here the three of them were, and Fiona's mind kept spinning with all of the things she shouldn't have done, the things she shouldn't have said, and how messed up she'd made her life. Even out of the chest harness and free to move now, Adelie still cried. Fiona shouldered off her backpack and lay the child on her knees, rocking her back and forth despite the very limited energy she had right now. Fiona's skin and clothes were damp with sweat, although it wasn't particularly hot out. Adelie was sweating too, her little brown curls plastered against her skin. Her face was red, but Fiona initially attributed both of these things to today's long walk. She pulled out her daughter's small water canteen, scooped some milk into it, shook it up, and offered it to the baby. It wasn't hot, but if Adi was hungry and feeding her would quiet her, there was no time for a fire. But the toddler refused the milk and continued to cry. Fiona carefully checked her diaper, but it still seemed dry. Fiona put more effort into trying to quiet her daughter. They should have been miles from anyone, and the trees would help muffle the sound, but the sound still left her on edge. All it would take is one person to hear these cries and investigate, and Adelie would be taken away while Chris and Fiona became prisoners. They were between districts Four and Ten, circling for the right entrance into Ten from Chris' map. Adelie's skin was still pink and sweaty, and now Fiona was starting to think it was more than just today's walking. She put a hand against Adelie's forehead, which was hot. There was an occasional cool breeze, but Adelie's skin hadn't been cooled by it. "Chris," Fiona said, her voice strained as she looked over at him. "Does Adi feel hot to you?" She looked back down at Adelie. "If she's sick, what are we... what can we... oh god, Chris. It's my fault, all of this." She swallowed, smoothing aside her daughter's hair as she tried to stop the tears that were waiting just behind her eyes. She didn't know how far away they were from the entrance into Ten, but it wasn't exactly just around the bend. Out here, what could they do for Adelie? WC: 741 Tag: Christopher Riggs Notes: Sorry this is kind of all over the place. Also, I don't know what Panem map we were referencing in the earlier thread, but I just referenced this one from our HG Survival Trainings and figured they were between Four and Ten currently.

Chris stopped the moment that Fiona demanded to do so. He looked at her and the baby girl, Ali was the way he had already started to call her. He looked around and then up to the sky, it wasn-t a really hot day, but still he could feel how his shirt stick to his body as a second layer of skin, he looked at Fiona and Ali and then knew that they would have to find shelter soon, and not just for the night. Maybe if it was only Fiona and himself, it would be different, but with the girl... she needed to rest more than a couple of hours in the arms of her mother, or occasionally his arms, she needed a bed, she needed a clean place to stay.
"ok, we can have some snack and a bit of water." He said feeling horribly, he hadn't really eaten his complete portions, he was saving them for fiona. He was taking them as far as he could, But if it came to it, he would sacrifice himself for them, so why to waste food on him? He knelt taking off his back the bag with food, then placed it on the ground and opened it to check what could they eat that day. He looked at them again as the girl cried, he was worried that someone could listen to them, but according to the map, they were far far away the closest place with people, so maybe no problem there. But what about wild animals, he had heard that there were some outside the boarders of the districts. well, if there was one, he would hunt it to eat something more than can food.
Then Fiona asked him if Ali was hot, he frowned and got up, then approached and leaned down, first felt the head with his hand, then with his forehead. He felt the girl a bit hotter than he was, could it be possible that he got sick while they were out there? "a bit... has she ate or drank something since our last meal?" He asked and started to worry, what if she was sick? he would had been his fault! He didn't pay attention, maybe the route they took! Then Fiona started panicing, well not on his watch. "Hey, calm down. It is not your fault. And if she is half tough than you are, then she'll be fine. Now... take off her clothes, leave only her underwear on her, we need to try to lower the temperature, and she'll be fine. then maybe by tomorrow, we'll be in 10, there I can find medicines or whatever we can use for her." He smiled confidently.
Maybe she had rejected him, but he was out there more like a guardian for both of them. He still felt strong feelings for her, but he wasn't going to force anything on her. He left everything he had worked for behind, and he would do it again if she'd asked him to. Yes, he could be a prisoner very soon, for now he was free and so were they. "I'll do anything it takes to keep her healthy ok? please, calm down Fiona. She needs you to be calm."

Fiona had no idea what she would do if she were making this trip alone. She'd almost considered it, that same impulsive night that she'd taken her daughter, but even she knew how stupid that would have been. She would probably have been able to get a map of the districts from Academy, but not one as detailed and useful as Chris'. She would have been able to walk the long days she'd been walking, but carrying everything they would need in addition to Adelie would have tired her out so much faster. It would have been close to impossible with just the two of them, but with Chris? She was hopeful. He could carry Adelie when she needed a break, he monitored the food, and he was the person he could double check her own decisions with. She was the kind of girl who hated to need anything from someone else, but Chris just gave of himself so easily. Fiona watched Chris come over to the pair of them, watched him take his own measurements of Adelie's temperature. She could have been just too hot herself, but his answer at least somewhat confirmed it. At his question, she nodded a little. "I gave her water about a half hour ago, but she wasn't hungry then." She wasn't hungry now either, having taken only a full pulls on the bottle before pushing it away as she continued to cry. Fiona couldn't help her own panic now. She'd been around the few times Adelie had been sick before, brief illnesses that were soon gone with a little medication and extra attention. She'd been around for teething, when Adelie would cry for now reason and nothing could settle her. But there was no medication out here, and teething wouldn't account for how hot her forehead was. What could they do? Maybe it would be okay once they got to Ten, but it was a foreign place, and what if they weren't welcomed? What if they couldn't find what she needed? Chris gave Fiona instructions, and she started following them without questions. Her hands were trembling a bit as she pulled off her daughter's shirt and pants and shoes, leaving her only in her diaper. Adelie had squirmed through the process, making it difficult. The clothes were damp, and Adelie's skin was pink. Chris spoke again, his voice gentle and reassuring, and Fiona closed her eyes. He was right, of course. The last thing her daughter needed was an equally upset mother, one who was too panicked to be much good. Adelie continued to cry, and Fiona tried to breathe. Throughout Adelie's short life - and even really before her birth - Fiona had never really thought she was a great mother. She couldn't be with her all the time, which was a large part of it, but it was more than that. There was this "mother's intuition" that people were supposed to have, and she didn't have it. Besides, what did she know about mothering? Her own mother had died only a few years after she was born, and all she had of her were vague impressions. But she also knew that she felt best when she was with Adelie. Nothing and no one felt as much like home as that baby girl did, perhaps because she'd once been a part of Fiona. Fiona wanted to be a better person for Adelie, and looked forward to the time they spent together, even if it wasn't perfect - which it rarely was. She hadn't known how much she needed Adelie until after she was born, after time and distance had seemed to pull them apart when all she wanted was for them to be together. Now Fiona had her daughter and the hope of a good life around the bend, but she could mess it up in an instant. "You're right," she said softly, opening her eyes and looking at Chris. She was trying to force herself to breathe, to take his advice to heart, even though she felt like she had no idea what she was doing. "We just need to get to Ten. Tomorrow? Are you sure? What if that's not soon enough?" She swallowed and looked down at Adelie again. She took up rocking the child a little again, hoping that the motion would calm her. Adelie's cries indeed had calmed a little, either because of the cool air on her skin or the rocking or Fiona's own forced calm. It didn't feel like this was done though. She lay her cheek against the top of Adelie's head. In an almost whisper, she said, "I'm sorry, for bringing both of you out here." WC: 780 Tag: Christopher Riggs

He was no medic, it was true that as peacekeepers they were taught some first aid stuff, only in case a medic was far from a disturb and they could help a allen friend. But it was always about wounds, heat stuff or even freezing stuff, but never how to help a baby with some kind of infection. for that women had to take their children to the medic in their district, they gave them the medicine and then the baby was fine! right?, well he thought so when he was younger, but no matter what he thought in that moment, he wasn't able to help Adelie, no matter what he did. The only way he could help her was if he took them both to Ten and he found a medic there that could do something!
"Look, I promise I will take you two to Ten by tomorrow before sunrise, we're that close, and I will do everything on my power to save her, but we need now to focus on a way to help her rest, if she cries like that as we approach to the district, the peacekeepers will find us and everything will be in vain." He said and then sighed. He passed his hand over the hot head of the sweet baby girl, he didn't care she wasn't his daughter, she was an innocent girl and he would do anything to save her from not being with her mother. "Fiona..." frowned and then looked around checking for sounds, then he heard her almost whisper and looked back at her. "I wouldn't wish to be anywhere else than here with you two." He smiled at her and then got up. He knelt and then started cutting some plants from the ground.
a minute later he came back and smiled at her. "do you remember... in one of the survival classes, something about... how to help a fellow peacekeeper with fever?" He said and showed her the plants, he left the academy long ago, maybe he wasn't picking the right plants or maybe he wasn't remembering the class as he should. "Would this help her?" Maybe only to calm her down until they got into Ten.
Is the plant good? 0D5ldATB5skill

Fiona nodded when Chris assured her they could get to Ten by tomorrow morning. What else could she do right now but trust him in that? She needed to believe it if there was a chance for any of them. Of course, once they made it into Ten, everything could change. The could be caught, killed, dragged by to Two while Adelie was ripped from her once again. But those were other problems, far off from the here and now where Adelie would be sick and it was Fiona's fault. Adelie's health was her greatest concern. What Chris said to her apology twisted Fiona's heart a little. How could he be so willing to be damned by her? There was a time, before Adelie and the doubts inside her own mind, that she hadn't minded playing with the emotions of boys. If she wanted something from someone, she took it. If they wanted more from her than she cared to give, she walked away. In both Career Academy and Peacekeeper Academy, she knew better than to form any lasting attachment, but she didn't intend to spend her days celibate and alone, either. She wanted her fun to ease the tension of her training. Now, though, she'd been worn down by time. She'd made attachments anyway and watched them crumble or quite literally die. And she had this baby, who she never even knew she wanted but needed more than anything else. She couldn't be frivolous with other people's emotions right now. She didn't want more casualties - but she needed Chris. Adelie needed Chris. Fiona heard Chris walk away a bit and do something a little ways off, but she kept her attention on her daughter. Adelie's skin had cooled a little in the breeze, but she still felt too warm. The girl's cries had turned closer to whimpers, and she squirmed in Fiona's grip. She tried the bottle again, unsuccessfully. Fiona didn't look up right away when Chris came back, but furrowed her brow at his question. They had taught basic survival classes back in the Academy. She knew they were mostly geared at those who would eventually guard more remote locations, or be part of raiding teams. She never really intended to be either, and so she had taken only the most basic of requirements. Her last survival class had been probably two years ago now, in her first term at Peacekeeper Academy. She'd passed the class - she passed every class - but only had a vague idea of the plant he might be talking about. Fiona looked up at the plant he had gathered and took some of it from him. There had been several plants that could reduce fever, she remembered. Which one you used depended mostly on what region of Panem you were in. She sniffed the plant, and rubbed a little of it between her fingers. These clues gave her no real information though. "I don't know," she said honestly, looking up at him. "It might. It looks... like it might be familiar." He didn't sound so sure, and neither was she. But what other options did they have? She took a leaf of the plant and put it on her own tongue. The taste was bitter, but she chewed and swallowed anyway. She took another leaf and did the same, just for good measure. She didn't have a fever, so there was no telling if it would work for that, but if it sat well in her own body, there was a chance it at least wouldn't hurt her daughter. "Depending on how I feel in an hour, we'll give it to her," Fiona told him. "Until then, I guess we wait." In order to move, they'd have to dress Adelie again, and the movement of walking - even in her chest harness - would surely bring her back to screams. Fiona closed her eyes and leaned back a little against the tree behind her. Adelie lay back against her chest. The toddler clearly was still upset, but had exhausted herself enough not to be crying so hard. Fiona took a deep breath, knowing that this waiting game would be close to intolerable. She'd never been a still person, and if now she was sick, they would only lose more time. Fiona opened her eyes and looked at Chris. Maybe talking could fill the time. "Do you remember the old water tower?" she asked him. "When Runner said I couldn't play with all you boys unless I made it all the way to the top?" Runner had been her eldest brother Jacob's best friend, just as Chris had been Ralph's. Fiona was only six when Runner had made that claim, and she had taken him up on the dare. Runner, Chris, Jacob, Ralph, and a whole bunch of other boys had come to watch, and although she'd been terrified the entire time, she'd climbed like she was fearless. "I made it all the way to the top, and then I couldn't get back down. A tornado couldn't have pried me from that railing until Ralph came up to talk me down. When I finally did come down, most of the boys still thought I was a coward, but not you. Do you remember what you said to me that day?" WC: 883 Tag: Christopher Riggs Notes: She would have eaten the plant either way of the dice, so I'm glad it's good!

Chris showed her the plant and after some minutes she tried it. she was right, one of them had to try first if it was good for the baby or not. He smiled when she told him to wait for her reaction to it. He was almost sure of it, so he just nodded and sat down on a rock in front of her. He grabbed his bag and started looking for some dry meat, they had to eat something if they were going to wait, they would have to use that stop and wait as a rest stop, that was for sure. He was looking for it when she asked him about th Water tower. He didn't look at her the moment he chuckled.
He remembered The days of his early youth when Ralph, her brother, used to tell him to sneak to the old tower. Then not only Ralph but Runner ad Jacob used to go there and play. They used to bet who could get up to the top fast or sometimes just higher. But they never allowed Fiona to play, first of all she was a girl, secondly she was the youngest, how could they allow a young girl to play? and maybe to defeat them, even when they never gave that reason to why they never allowed her to play with them.
"Yes!... you were s scared!" And he also remembered that day, but he didn't remember his words. Maybe because they were too young, maybe because He thought of her as the baby sister of his best friend, well... only back then. "no... Sorry... what did I tell you?, please tell me." He slowly shook his head as he told her so. In that moment he would have told her that she had been very brave only by going up there. Like in that moment, he thought she was brave and a great mother only for wanting to be with her daughter, o matter what.

Fiona laughed a little when Chris confirmed how scared she had been. Yes, she had been terrified. She had since gotten used to heights, going back to the tower alone several times to try again. She'd made sure it was a part of her Career and Peacekeeper training, so that she could cross it off of her list of fears. She believed that she had. It might be impossible to be entirely fearless, but Fiona had certainly made the effort in school. When she got to whatever district she'd end up being a Peacekeeper in, she had wanted to be ready for anything the citizens could throw at her. Now, maybe that training would help her somehow in Ten. No matter what sort of atmosphere they encountered, she had done what she could to be ready. "You told me that you were scared too," Fiona answered, looking at him. A small smile touched her lips as she continued "I didn't know if you meant scared for me or scared when you had to do it or both. I guess I still don't, but it didn't matter. You were scared, and fear wasn't only something for little girls but maybe for everyone. I hadn't seen or heard a boy say that he was scared before that day, and you stopped me from feeling pretty worthless." It had made Runner's teasing easier to bear, and certainly gave her the motivation to keep trying to play with the boys. She belonged with the boys - getting dirty, being reckless, having adventures. There might have been a group of girls like her out there to find, but it wouldn't have been the same. She'd always been around boys, and she looked up to her two older brothers. They'd eventually become a pretty good team. "People don't like to admit fear," Fiona went on. "I sure as hell- uh, heck, don't. What are you afraid of, Chris?" Chris looked at her while she was telling him his own words from the past, he chuckled when she said what he had told her before. He nodded and remembered that moment, he remembered why he had been scared, and well back then it had been of several things, maybe that's why he hadn't told her exactly why or to what he had been scared of, back then he was just a boy, so he was scared of several things, yes he was scared of heights back then, but also to the idea of her falling, not because he had known he would feel like he felt in the present for her, no... If she had fallen back then then maybe they would had been grounded or worse, so back then his fear summarized into that...
He looked at her when she asked what he was scared of and then he simply sighed. He chuckled again and looked at the baby girl and then at her again. "Back then, I was only scared of getting grounded or falling... but now my biggest fear is to lose you and the baby. I know what you told me about... us. But that's my fear... not being capable to protect you two, lose you..." He frowned and then looked down to his hands and put a bit more wood into the small fire they got for the night. He couldn't believe he had just told her such things, why was he insisting in somthing that maybe would never happen, in something that for sure was just a hopeless dream in his mind?! a life in peace with fiona by his side. then he breathed deeply and smiled again, he looked up at her once more with an earnest smile, as if he hadn't told her what he felt, a second ago. "and you? what are you afraid of now that you're a full adult and not a little girl?"

Fiona didn't know what she was expecting from Chris' answer, but it wasn't what he actually said. She still had a hard time understanding why he was helping her and Adelie, why he would risk everything because of all of her own mistakes. As he told her that his biggest fear was not being able to protect her and Adelie, it almost brought her to tears. It wasn't like tears were that far away - she was frustrated and Adelie had something wrong with her, and she didn't know if this was the right plan. Still, though, it touched at her heart. She felt the almost overwhelming need to kiss him right then, to screw it all and just do something she really wanted to do. She wouldn't be rejected, not after all he'd said, and he was close enough that it would be so easy. So easy to cross the distance and press her lips to his. She couldn't. Fiona had gotten herself into so much trouble precisely because she did what she wanted. It would feel so good to kiss him, to let herself fall for him, but when she inevitably broke his heart later, what then? She'd be alone with Adelie in a strange district and have to figure out how to start her life all over again. So, Fiona bit her lip and closed her eyes to hold back her own desire, grateful that Chris found something to distract himself with after his words finished. She didn't open her eyes until he spoke again, realizing that she should have known that her question would be coming right back at her. She hadn't really wanted that. Against her shoulder, Fiona could feel Adelie's soft breathing. When she set the girl gently back down in her lap, she saw that Adelie was sleeping. Their talk must have calmed the baby, and she'd let her exhaustion take her away. Fiona had hoped to stall for a moment by giving Adelie some of the plant that Chris had found, but she wasn't going to wake her daughter up. Adelie needed all the sleep she could get on this journey, and her fever would surely wake her up soon. "Right now? I think I'm afraid of everything." Fiona glanced back up at Chris, felt tears pricking at her eyes. "I'm afraid that all of this was the wrong idea. I'm afraid that I'm a terrible, selfish mother with no idea how to raise this girl. I'm afraid that we'll die, that they won't let us in to Ten, or that we'll be found. I'm afraid I'm broken, that I'm going to hurt you like I hurt everyone else, and you deserve so much better than all of this." Twin tears fell from each eye, but she didn't bother to wipe them away. She laughed a little, although nothing was funny. "I'm sorry. I'm a mess, aren't I." WC: 483 Tag: Christopher Riggs

He looked at her and listened with attention, he tilted his head once and then when she mentioned that she was afraid of hurting him he frowned and shook his head slightly and only with one move. He could understand her fears, well at least most of them, he was scared too, maybe more than he actually knew. A wrong idea... well, maybe it was the worst of them, they were all alone, on their own in savage land and probably peace keepers were already chasing and haunting them down, but on the other hand he knew that if she had shown at his dooronce more, he would have done and chose the same choices.
about her girl... well he was sure the girl would be in better hands with fiona, just because she was the biological mother and was risking everything for her baby girl. dying... Well, he wasn't going to let them die, He had already made that personal oath, they would get to live a good life full of freedom, no matter if he died so they got it.
But then when she mentioned him in the equation... well, he sighed and shook his head. the moment that she ask if she was a mess, He breathed deeply and nodded. "A bit... yeah." then smiled at her and chuckled. "But tell me something new, you've always been a nice mess, always. since the very moment you got the gutz to play with a bunch of boys that would for sure hurt you in a million ways. Now, I believe that she is much better with you and that you will risk not only everything but beyond to keep her safe and happy."
He then looked at his hands and then back at her. "About me... I rather be here with you tonight, and die tomorrow protecting you two, than living a century without seeing you again. So... what I mean is that... if I feared being hurt... I wouldn't be here now." He smiled and put some more twigs in the fire, but only enough to keep it alive and also away from calling up for attention."Call me masoquist... I'd like you take a leap of faith even if you hurt me." Then he looked back at her. "about Ten... something tells me we'll be fine, Ten is big, and maybe we can live in Ten but far from snoopy eyes for a while." Then he cracked his fists and then his neck, then looked at her. "you should try to sleep, how's Adelie?"

Fiona laughed as he said she was always a mess, actually laughed. Of course she was. She'd might have had a long term plan for her life at a young age, but the rest of her time she had always been impulsive, brazen, a little crazy. It had always seemed like there was little point in life without risks and danger. Like several of her brothers, it was a miracle she had survived into adulthood. Much as she wanted to, it wasn't like she could just flip a switch and be entirely safe and together now. She was smarter and stronger, but still a mess. Chris was certainly right when it came to how she felt about Adelie. Fiona would do anything for this child, something she knew with more feeling than she'd ever felt for a boy. Chris went on though, addressing all of her fears. "I'd rather be here with you tonight, and die tomorrow protecting you two, than living a century without seeing you again." Damn, why did he have to be so sweet? No one has ever said something like that to her. No one would stay with her while the threat of death loomed so close overheard, a threat he was certainly aware of. He was asking her to give him a shot, despite how she'd told him it was a bad idea for both of them. And it was tempting, so tempting. He didn't pause after that, or wait for her response before he went on, but she barely heard his assurances about Ten. Fiona looked back to Adelie when Chris asked about her, and as if on cue, the little girl stirred. She stretched a small fist up and opened clear blue eyes. Fiona couldn't help but smile at the beauty of such a simple thing. "She seems alright," she said softly. Adelie's skin was still warm though, her cheeks still pink. Fiona took the rest of the plant Chris had given her and broke off some tiny pieces. Adelie didn't like taking the foreign substance, but Fiona was able to get her to eat a decent amount. The girl was certainly awake by then. "Kiss," Adelie whined, reaching her tiny hands toward Chris and clearly tired of her mother. The girl used the same word for his name and the action. Fiona complied and handed the baby to Chris, giving her forehead a kiss after the exchange was complete. She turned to face the pair of them. "Don't die tomorrow," she commanded, then her voice softened as she added, "but just in case..." Leaning forward, Fiona put a hand on Chris' cheek and pressed her lips lightly to his. It was a brief kiss, and she pulled back far sooner than she wanted to, but it still filled her with warmth. "Thank you," she whispered, "even though you're crazy." Whether she was thanking him for the kiss or helping her or everything he'd done, it was hard to say. She smiled, and then moved away to busy herself with setting out the blankets and getting their sleeping places ready. WC: 517 Tag: Christopher Riggs
