Max stepped into the grand room behind Phoenix, dropping his hand from its resting place on her waist. Before the pair, the interior of one of the Capitol's finest mansions was spread out before them. Each year, the amount of banquets and parties skyrocketed after the Games ended and before the next one started. Really, most Capitolites lived for that week or so in June. The rest of the year was spent in anticipation of what many to considered to be the highlight of their otherwise boring and repetitive lives. This particular gala was no exception: bored politicians with full pockets pouring their coin into the highest brand of extravagance available. The wide, open room of marble and gold leaf was the perfect setting for such an event. Though, for the most part, Max assumed that the grand features of eloquence were there in part to excuse the inebriated attendees and other "blemishes" on the night. Not that Max cared. Really, he was there for one reason alone. For the past three months, Max and Phoenix had been together "officially." For the most part, what this meant was that Max had practically moved in with Phoenix, that his hours in the shop were far fewer than they'd been prior to the start of his relationship, but most importantly, that he was happier than he'd ever been in his entire life. In the three fantastic months he'd spent with her, though, the pair managed to avoid the big articles in the tabloids that came along with the big parties. The decision to not attend any large events hadn't been a conscious one, just something that happened. Now, though, that was about to change. The gala was one of the largest of the year, hosted by someone who was probably either a Gamemaker or one of Snow's politicians, judging on the size of the home where the event was taking place. Reporters and their cameras would be everywhere. For a few years, Max skirted the public's eye. He wasn't hiding, but he did avoid reporters. There was something unsettling, he thought, about seeing his own face printed across the cover of a magazine at a news stand. Phoenix, too, faced similar problems. It wasn't easy to be invisible when involved with familial scandals, they both had learned. Walking into the venue, knowing that cameras were likely turning towards him, Max felt a little uneasy. To steady himself, he moved his hand back to Phoenix. The whole scene felt strangely familiar. In his childhood, almost every day meant some sort of stiff social engagement with his parents. After leaving them, Max stopped going to the parties. The two - his family and their social grounds - were too strongly linked for him to enjoy any engagement. Walking into this gala with Phoenix beside him, though, made Max feel like he could manage to rebrand the social scene. Getting ready and slipping on a tuxedo didn't come with barks from his mother to straighten some article of clothing. In the ride there, no one urged him to speak with specific people. Instead, the whole preparation aspect had been unexpectedly been fun. This was, no doubt, a credit to Phoenix. She could make anything fun. Max stepped a bit closer to her, getting within earshot. "How long has it been for you?" he asked, his eyes scanning around the room. There had been smaller, more informal gatherings scattered around for both, but nothing of this scale. "I think it's been... seven years for me," he admitted. Around the room, he caught sight of familiar faces: old "family friends", previous clients, and other party goers he'd met in the past. Catching sight of a particular group, Max let out a laugh fueled mainly by discomfort, though his face masked that emotion fairly well. "Oh, god. I'll need a few drinks to get through this one. Should we find the waiters?"Words: 667 Tags: Phoenix Ezra

Phoenix knew that this evening would change everything for her and Max. Up until now, their relationship had been somewhat quiet, the only ones knowing about it being their friends. Sure, gossip had popped up in the tabloids but nothing had been confirmed and there had never been a chance for it to become news for the entire Capitol to know about. After tonight, after this event, everyone would know about the Ezra daughter and Aspheni son dating. It didn't matter to her, but the headlines it would create for her brother and his campaign would most likely become an issue. She also knew that Max had been out of this scene for a long time and the closer they got to the place, the more she could sense it. Her hand went to his, squeezing it reassuringly. There hadn't been much talking the last couple of minutes, yet she still knew how he was feeling. It was strange, how well she'd gotten to know and trust him. Phoenix stopped before the entered the place, pecking his cheek. "It's gonna be alright you know. With the right amount of booze we'll both get through this night", she smiled, before picking up her pace again. It got worse when they entered the venue. Max's nervousness was almost beginning to take off on her but when his hand went to her back, she was able to breathe out. "Less than a year. I got shitdrunk, spilled a drink on grandma Snow.. not my most charming moment." Phoenix couldn't help but laugh a little, remembering the tabloids that had covered that event, all mentioning how Akiva was going to run the politics of the Capitol if he couldn't handle his own sister. The circumstances around her alcohol consumption that evening had been righteous if you ask her, though in hind-sight, she probably could have handled it a bit more gracefully. Phoenix's gaze stopped where Max was looking. She turned back to him with a small frown on her face. "Yeah, of course." Hooking her arm under his, they began creating a distance between themselves and the group of people that were the reason why Max felt the need to drink. "Max? Who are they?" she asked, stopping in a secluded area of the gala.

Max managed to laugh at Phoenix’s confession. Of course, she was one of the only people who could actually make him laugh in a time like this. He could picture the look on her face, on the various Snows’ faces. After they left the gala, the first thing he’d do when alone would be looking up the tabloids for the event. If he was lucky, he would find a video. ”I bet your brother really loved that,” he said with a chuckle. He was no stranger to Akiva’s attempts to police his sister. In the months they’d been dating, Max figured Phoenix had told him of most of the notable examples of that. Personally, Max thought Akiva was far too tightly wound, but he figured that he would be, too, if he was fighting in the nasty game of politics. Max understood how cutthroat that world was as well as anyone else. After seeing the group occupying one corner, though, Max’s happy laughter died out, replaced by a different, more artificial kind. For the past week, he’d been working to mentally prepare himself for the event. He’d thought of the people he could see, what they might say. None of that preparation actually amounted to anything when it was stacked against the actual experience of reliving old memories. The people weren’t just partygoers - they were ghosts from his past life. After they’d fled to a better area, probably as secluded as they could find, Max accepted the inevitable question. Who were they? The question was simple enough, but it took a certain amount of effort to answer. He’d only seen one of the people, really. That was all it took. Mousy brown hair, obsidian black eyes, and a petite statue almost better suited to a child that could hardly contain the large personality residing within. That’s all Max needed to see. ”Well,” he said, as if discussing lunch plans, ”I can tell you who one of them is, if that’s helpful.” He waited for a moment. Her name caught in the back of his throat and stayed there for a moment. It came with dust and cobwebs, like it was some unopened box in a forgotten attic - and, in a way, it was. It’d been seven years since he’d used the name. ”Standing by stairs there, all the way back, that’s Sabina Aspheni.” Followed by that was the unspoken yet implied label that was usually attached but untrue. My sister he added in his thoughts. Words: 435 Tags: Phoenix Ezra

Phoenix grinned. "I guess you could say that." She couldn't help but laugh a little, though it wasn't as genuine as before. The only reason she'd gotten that drunk was because it had been the anniversary of her parent's death. She remembered the aftermath of it and the Akiva's lecture but she also remembered how things had somehow gotten better between them. How he'd become her brother again after that so it hadn't been all bad. She felt her feet move them towards the bar, feeling the tension in Max's body. She could already tell that it wasn't good, even though she didn't exactly know the reason as to why yet. Her eyes met his when he began to talk. She could tell that it was difficult for him, the palm of her hand automatically reaching for his cheek. "Hey. It's okay", she said when he paused. Her mouth was an inch from dropping when she finally heard the name. She couldn't help the sigh that escaped her lips, her hand now dropping to his, gently squeezing it. He didn't have to say anything. She didn't know much about his past, but words were superfluous. His face, his body language... It said it all. "We can go out and get some air, yeah? I need to smoke anyways", Phoenix told him and grabbed a drink before she slowly began to drag him out with her.

There was very little personal information - familial information, specifically - that Max disclosed to anyone. He generally allowed everyone’s grossly inaccurate assumptions to run wild. He felt no need to correct them. It was easier to live as a detached part of the family portrait or as a headline in the tabloids. Sure, the lies were sometimes ugly and hurtful, but always better than the truth. Phoenix understood that. She never pried and took what information she was given. Max assumed that she had some idea of how terrible the reality of his home life had been, which drove her to avoid the topic around him and grace him in ways like this when it came up. When she offered to leave, Max went willingly. ”Yeah, that… that’s good” he agreed. Max wanted so badly to be normal and not have to run and seek shelter at a single sight of one of the Asphenis. He couldn’t always run and hide. Eventually, they’d catch up to him. Still, for now, he had that option. Max stepped out into the dimly lit balcony with Phoenix. The thing was massive, almost the size of a porch. The front of it bowed outward into the night, spanning above the green of the manicured lawn below which was surrounded by more of the expansive mansion. Max went to stand by the edge of it, leaning against the bannister there. He reach into his pocket, pulling out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. Max lit the first, passed it to Phoenix, then lit one for himself. Cycling the smoke through his lungs a few times did wonders in calming him down. ”It’s a beautiful night,” he said, trying to break the silence that had settled around the pair. Phoenix felt lighter the moment she stepped outside, mostly because Max seemed to ease up a little. She took the cigarette he lit for her, inhaling its smoke while feeling the closest thing to serene for a brief moment. She smiled at his comment, then found herself leaning into his arms, her face only a couple of inches away from his. "It is, isn't it?" A smile played on her lips until she leaned forward and kissed him. If the nosy journalists wanted to talk about them then she was more than happy to provide them with whatever they needed. She breathed him in before pulling back, still smiling. She didn't really have anything to say, so she just turned around, watching the view with him as she leaned onto his shoulder. Even with her heels on, she was still inches shorter than him, which was great for when she rested her head on his shoulder. Looking up at him, she couldn't help the frown that formed between her brows. "If you want, we could go home. I have a few ideas as to what we could do to entertain ourselves", Phoe smirked and kissed his neck before returning her attention back to her cigarette. It didn't really matter to her if they were here or at her place. Everything they could have here, they could have at home. She had everything from alcohol to weed, which was pretty much the only things this place had to offer.

Phoenix knew exactly how to make Max feel better. The smoke calmed him initially, but her presence did wonders. Every touch and word she gave him slowed down his speeding mind and made him feel like he could breathe once again. He didn’t think about the journalists or his sister or his old life even once while she kissed him and put her head on his shoulder afterwards. He felt like he could do things like attend parties if she was there to guide him. Max felt more and more like his real self and less like the shell of a person he’d left behind at the Aspheni mansion as he spent more time with Phoenix. He even managed to laugh at her offer. ”I hope you’re serious, because I’m absolutely willing to leave here a little early in the name of entertaining ourselves,” he shot back. Max flicked his cigarette, letting the ashes fall off the balcony. ”I’m not above a bathroom if you aren’t,” he said, finding his old self in his humor. Words: 198 Tags: Phoenix Ezra

Phoenix nodded with a grin, happy to see him like his usual self. "I'm very serious", she replied with a smirk and turned around to face him again. It was a game, if anything and there was something about the fact that someone might catch them at any given moment that made it all so much more fun. She kissed him again, then nibbled his earlobe. "Well, what about here?" Phoenix pulled back and looked at him, her body still pressed to his. She was about to kiss him again when she saw someone moving, not far from where they stood. Looking at the person, she saw that it was an avox with a tray. Phoenix was just about to shrug it off when an uneasy feeling began to settle on her. Her gaze went back to the avox, focusing on his face. He looked familiar, way too familiar and she couldn't remember why. She'd moved away from Max without realizing, her focus entirely on the avox. She was frowning, trying to remember why he seemed familiar but there was nothing. His face only brought a sense of unease and that pit in her stomach. Her hand reached out for Max's arm in an instant. The world was starting to spin and it made her crazy not knowing why. A faint memory began to resurface but she couldn't make sense of it. She didn't remember much from the orphanage, other than playing with some kids and crying the other half of the time because she missed her parents. Then there was a third of her time there who had been spent with her brothers but that was all she remembered. Now, something different began to surface. She remembered going to sleep one night, around the age of 11. Then a man entered the room, one of the workers. But that was it. Phoenix couldn't remember anything else, no matter how hard she clenched her eyes shut and tried to remember. Opening her eyes, she looked at Max. "We need to find Akiva", she told him and walked back inside without waiting for an answer. If anyone knew what it was all about, it had to be Akiva. She couldn't make out if it was a dream or if it was an actual memory and Kiva knew. He had to know right? Phoe strode over to her brother with his company of other politicians. She batted her eyelashes at them. " I'm sorry, but I need to steal my brother away from you guys for just a tiny moment", she smiled and hooked her arm under his until they were closer to the balcony with less people listening to their conversation. Phoenix took a deep breath, then met her brother's gaze who couldn't be all too happy. "That avox", she nodded towards the man who was now inside. "Why does he seem familiar? And why do I have a memory or- or something, from the orphanage with him there?" She knew that her brother was able to detect the slight fear in her voice. It scared her that she couldn't remember. She'd never cared much about her time in the orphanage or even bothered to remember that time but now when she tried, there seemed to be so many gaps that she couldn't account for.

The gala had been pressed to be a big deal. Every politician and anyone who was anyone was invited. It was also good for charities and to keep support towards the politicians of The Capitol. The more giving they looked, the better their reputation. Akiva himself had donated millions to charities, but most of all the orphanage they'd been in when they were younger. Phoenix had agreed to attend, but it worried him. Every time they attended an event, she always had a tendency to bring attention to herself. And it was never the kind of attention he wanted for her. Akiva's eyes would wander over to find her every few minutes and his ears listened intently at the sounds around him, always ready for another of Phoenix's scenes. Maybe it was a bad idea to have her here, but appearances were important and he wanted so badly to trust her to do the right thing. Then, he spotted her talking to some guy. Unable to break away from the group he was stuck in a conversation with, he continued to look over, becoming more and more distracted by their body language. She was a grown woman and she could do what she wanted, but right out in public? It made him cringe. Besides, who was she talking to? Akiva couldn't see his face too well and people continued to pass by, making him lose sight every so often. More politicians came to talk to him and he was pulled into a deep conversation about he criminals who called themselves rebels. Akiva was about to speak when Phoenix came to get him. She really did have bad timing. He cleared his throat and excused himself before following after Phoenix. Following her gaze to the avox, his blood turned cold. Akiva looked at Phoenix quickly and then the man. Phoenix voice sounded slightly panicked, Akiva's blood boiled inside his body as anger flooded him. "What did he do!? Did he touch you!?" Akiva's hand gripped her arm only for a moment before he let go and pushed his way towards the avox, not awaiting for an answer. "You son of a b-" Akiva flipped the tray out of the avox's hand, sending the drinks and tray flying into the air. Arm pulled back and fists clenched, his knuckles landed on the man's nose. His other arm pulled back before he threw it forward at the avox's stomach. Akiva didn't stop, couldn't stop, and continued to hit the man until the man fell to the floor, his face bloody and unrecognizable. WC: 432 TAG: Phoenix Ezra , Max Aspheni

Max frowned when he felt Phoenix’s mood change so abruptly. She’d gone from playful to distracted to completely uneasy. Something was wrong. ”Hey, are you okay?” Max asked, reaching out to touch her. He caught her eyes lingering on one specific Avox. He was taken aback when she grabbed his arm. Max moved to step towards the Avox, ready to do whatever he needed to do to fix this. ”Phoenix?” he asked, feeling deep concern rolling through him. It was incredibly unsettling, like he was caught back here and unable to help Phoenix with whatever was plaguing her like this. Finally, when she came back to him, Max nodded. ”Yes,” he agreed readily, ”We’ll go find Akiva right now.” He had no idea what was going on with Phoenix but she seemed very determined to find her brother, so that was enough for Max. Max stayed right behind her, now able to easily slide through the party because he was doing so with a purpose. He lingered right behind her as she approached the group of politicians, because he was sure that right now wasn’t the time for ugly questions about his personal life or parents. Thankfully, Akiva must have sensed the urgency in her voice and taken it seriously, because he followed her outside. Max still followed, wanting desperately to help but not wanting to be intrusive. He listened carefully, trying to understand fully what was going on, and then everything erupted at once. Max was very obviously missing information. Avox. Orphanage. Memory. Touched you. Max never had seen anyone move like Akiva did. He was such a calm man in appearance, all easy smiles and measured comments. That was gone now, and instead, something more animalistic had replaced the old him. In only a second, Akiva rushed the Avox Phoenix was watching. Max stood for a single moment, entirely confused. He shot a worried glance to Phoenix, and then towards Akiva. Though he didn’t want to leave Phoenix, he knew that things were going poorly very quickly. He reach out, giving her hand a quick squeeze before running after Akiva. He threw himself directly into the situation, ignoring everyone around him. Max wrapped his arms around Akiva’s torso, pulling back. ”Akiva - Akiva. You’ve got to stop now. You’re going to kill him.” Of course, the Avox probably deserved this and more for what Max assumed he’d done to Phoenix, but this was no way to go about delivering that justice, especially not when Akiva was such a big name politician. ”You’ve got to stop, the Peacekeepers will finish him.” Max said again, pulling again on Akiva’s body. Phoenix lost track of time the moment she saw the rage burning inside her brother's eyes. What happened next, happened so quickly and before she knew it she was standing outside with her brother who's knuckles were bruised and Max who looked incredibly lost. She felt lost too. The uneasiness only increased when Akiva reacted the way he did and she still didn't have an answer. It felt like something bad. Something incredibly bad because why else would Kiva have beaten a man up in front of everyone? He'd most definitely ruined his career because of it and whatever the man had done to her, Phoenix couldn't help but feel guilty. Tears began to dwell in her eyes. She couldn't help but look away and wipe at them with the back of her hand, before meeting her brother's eyes with her own. "What did he do?" Her voice wasn't louder than a whisper, but he heard her. What came next was like a dream. A nightmare. Somehow, her brain had repressed all memories of what happened during her time in the orphanage. She couldn't remember the things he'd done to her, but it explained so much. It explained why she'd hated it when people touched her, why she'd get anxiety attacks in the middle of nowhere, why her paintings turned out to be so dark when she was just... Phoenix. Heavy tears were falling down her cheeks. She didn't know what to say or what to do. Instead she just found herself hugging Akiva. Thanking him when her own voice couldn't. She'd never known. She'd never known to what extent her brothers had helped her and protected her and now she did. All the times she'd yelled at him, hating him for being a politician first-hand and then her brother. It broke her, knowing that she'd blamed him for so much and that he'd carried this around for so long on his own. Him and Mercury. "I'm sorry Phe. I'm sorry", she heard him say but all she could do was shake her head. He had nothing to be sorry for. She knew he blamed himself for not finding out sooner back when they were kids but it wasn't his fault. How could it have been? Phoenix stood there for some time, embracing her brother. But then he pulled away, wiped at her tears and said he had to go. She didn't have it in her to stop him, even though she wanted him to stay. He'd finally lifted the weight off her chest and for that she'd be forever grateful to him. But then he was gone and she was left there with Max. Max. Her eyes grew bigger. She'd forgotten about him. "Max", Phoenix started, carefully meeting his gaze. She didn't know what he was thinking. Was he disgusted by her? Would he think that she was some fragile piece of glass that he could barely touch without breaking? Her breath caught in her chest as she approached him, her hand reaching for his. "Please look at me." Her voice was shaking and for the first time in her life, she found herself to be absolutely terrified. What if he didn't want her anymore? She knew that he wasn't like that, but the thoughts in her mind couldn't be stopped. It wasn't that she felt disgusted with herself. She'd been a kid and someone had taken advantage of her. She was furious but the man had been served with justice. What else could she demand? If anything, she was happy that she didn't remember what had happened. And maybe, the anxiety would get easier, now that she knew the reason behind it. But none of it mattered until she knew what Max was thinking.

Everything felt like a movie, moving so quickly. Akiva was pulled off the Avox who was now splayed across the ground, darkening the tile with his crimson blood. Phoenix was crying in Akiva’s arms. How had it all happened so fast? Max stood, watching the whole scene unfold as he felt like nothing could be done to fix it. Other partygoers had since taken notice, forming a circle around the group as they didn’t bother to conceal their gossip and chatter in loud voices. Max finally allowed himself to move, taking Akiva’s place when he left. He took Phoenix’s hand, squeezing it as soon as he made contact. At her request, he looked at her red and swollen eyes, her tear stained cheeks, then kissed her forehead and pulled her to his chest. ”Hey, Phoenix, I don’t know what’s happening right now, but you’re safe right now. I’m here, and I can do anything you need me to do for you,” he said into her ear as he held her close, keeping his voice low so no one else would hear. ”But we should leave, okay? We can go back to your house and talk about this or not or do anything else you’d like.” He stroked her hair once, twice, then pulled back. ”We don’t even have to go that far. We just… should not be here in case there’s another escalation.” Words: 256 Tags: Phoenix Ezra

Phoenix wanted to sink into his arms and remain there forever. She couldn't even begin to tell him how much it meant to her that was still there, despite the information that had come to light. She'd expected the worst, thinking that maybe now would be the time he left her, because how on earth could she have someone as perfect and amazing as he was? But he proved her wrong and the relief and love that she felt was so immense that she began to cry again. Her arms were wrapped tightly around him and despite everything that had happened, she'd never felt more safe in her life. She nodded slightly, not trusting her voice to hold. Lights and streets flashed by as they walked in silence back to her place. Her emotions were all over the place. Guilt over Akiva's actions, confusion about how she couldn't remember what had happened to her, relief regarding Max and how no matter what he found out, he still seemed to love her. All of that mixed with anger and pain left her startled, phased with no idea about what to do or what to say. The easiest thing was to cry, to let it all come out in the shape of tears. Stopping in her tracks, she turned and looked at Max. "Wha- What now?" she asked, somehow still terrified that maybe he wouldn't want her. She didn't even know where the thought came from. It was like a whisper in the shadows, crawling at her. And before she took another step, she needed to know if he would still be hers in the morning.

When Max glanced up, he saw all the eyes and cameras in the room trained towards Akiva, Phoenix, the bleeding avox on the floor, and him. The papers would get one hell of a story, that was for sure. Max didn’t even want to think about what those headlines might look like and how long they’d stick around. There were so many layers to investigate - the avox, the incident, Akiva’s career, and their relationship. Max knew how ugly those papers were and how ruthless the writers could be. He would do his best to keep the worst of it from Phoenix in the coming weeks, but it would be impossible to guard her from everything. For now, his next step was to remove her from the situation immediately. As Max steered Phoenix out of the mansion, grazing by Sabina without a single word. This was more important now. Max kept quiet as they approached Phoenix’s place. When she stopped, he reached down and touched her hand loosely, giving her the opportunity to pull away if she didn’t want to be touched. Max furrowed his eyebrows as he looked at her. ”Well, first, we can get home and away from this mess. You can get out of this dress, take a shower, try to eat something, whatever you want. You can tell me about what’s happening, we can talk about something else, or we don’t have to talk at all. You decide what happens with that, and I can handle anything you need.” Max offered. Truthfully, he was confused as hell. Akiva, the most level guy he’d ever seen, went absolutely nuclear on the avox. Max had a hint of an idea about what had happened, but truthfully, he was mostly in the dark. Ultimately, the most important thing was he and Phoenix made it to the other side of this thing, whatever it was. Words: 335 Tags: Phoenix EzraNotes: surprise!! 2 whole years later
