6:30 am: Wake up. Put on one of your two "outfits". Go to the bathroom and refill the bowl. Open the window and spit as hard as you can at the Malcolm house.
6:45 am: Go downstairs super quietly so you don't wake Nessarose, take one apple from the kitchen, and leave the house to check on your horde of stuff four houses over in the empty house. Add anything you found yesterday.
7:05 am: Leave the empty house so that you can get back to Nessarose's before February goes to school.
7:15 am: Go to the bathroom window, open it just a little, and watch as February and icky jerk Draven walk to the Malcolm car for school all cutesy and barf-like. Gag a little.
7:20 am: Stare at your reflection and make your best warrior faces. Check out the muscles you've gotten from working in the shop. Mentally go over your strengths and weaknesses.
7:45 am: Tell Nessarose you've already eaten a good breakfast and aren't hungry. Trudge toward school and pretend you don't notice the food she put in your backpack.
8:00 am: Pick Lilith up from her cave just outside school and tell her everything with your mind like you always do.
8:20 am: Put Lilith back and run to class, to arrive late, as per usual - but not so late they call Mama.
8:25 am - 3:15 pm: School. Ignore that November is your shadow most of the time, but still give her more than half of the lunch Nessarose gave you. Don't raise your hand. Try not to punch Rails Morgan in the face every time he opens his mouth. Pretend not to see the girls that literally put up their noses at you. Threaten Eric Riker's life if he touches you again, and pummel him if the teachers aren't looking. Keep your side projects hidden. Don't get caught, or noticed, or looked at.
3:20 pm: Check on Lilith, then run to the shop.
3:40 pm - 8:30 pm: Shop time. Listen to everything Nessarose says. Work hard. Learn everything you can.
9:00 pm: Arrive at Nessarose's house with Nessarose. Say you're going to bed.
9:30 pm: Sneak down the side of the house and head either to the rails or the junkyard. Scavenge and build and practice. Use the shop if you need to, but always put everything back exactly as you found it.
11:00 pm: Sneak back into the room Nessarose gave you, and use the bowl and washcloth you hid in the closet to wipe off the dirt. Rinse out your dress and hang it up to dry. Slip into the bed that feels like heaven, and go to sleep.
Repeat.
December had a schedule. She liked it pretty well, although she still thought she could use less school time. She never learned anything useful there. Which should mean that summer was the best season of the year - but it wasn't turning out to be. Nessarose didn't work all day, every day like December wanted to. On the days or times she was off, sometimes December would still go to the shop. She might have a project to work on, and the other guys mostly knew to leave her alone. No matter how professionally she acted though, no one would ever drop their vehicle off with an eight-year-old, and without that work, there was just plain nothing to do.
Today was one of those nothing-to-do days, so December had decided not to even go to the shop. She didn't feel like going to the junk yard or the rails, didn't have anything cool she was working on in the empty house. There weren't eleven other kids running around her, annoying her, so there was all this free space in her head and day that she didn't know what to do with. Sitting on the front porch steps of Nessarose's house, she put her chin in her hands and thought. She wondered if May was pestering November to give her another makeover. She wondered if the Papa who used to read to her and the other littles on nights he wasn't raging drunk had noticed that she wasn't at home anymore. She wondered if February still talked to January, or if January was just too cool to care.
December was pulling on one of her pigtails. She kind of missed them all - a little. Things were quieter out here. She'd done pigtails to her hair this morning without really thinking about it. Some of her older sisters thought pigtails were adorable, and April could always do it with the cleanest part you've ever seen. December's part was messy, and there was probably more hair in one pigtail than the other. It was nice to have her hair off her face, though. She almost always just let it hang down and do what it wanted, unless she had to put it up at the shop.
December glanced at the Malcolm house - right next door. She really hadn't realized it when Nessarose offered December a place to sleep, and so in the beginning she'd only come to Nessarose's house when she actually needed to sleep. Then, she'd just decided to kind of live there. She'd been careful though, and she was pretty sure her older sister had no idea that December was her neighbor. How could she know? February was too wrapped up in that ugly, selfish blonde boy and his family anyway. Today, however, she glared at that house. She dared February to come outside and notice her, to yell at her again. She dared stupid Draven to come out and threaten to have her arrested - again. She dared them to come out and make her mad, so that she could show them.
She was December. She didn't care. She was strong and only getting stronger. She was going to win one day, and everyone was going to know her name.
And she kinda missed having siblings.
