I know inside you're feeling so hollow. And it's a hard pill for you to swallow.
Calypso stood in front of her mirror, slowly exhaling as she put in the pearl earrings that her little sister had picked for her to wear on her date. When she had reluctantly signed up for Panem's latest dating app, she had only done so because her sister had encouraged her to. The younger Valette sister had reminded Calypso of everything she had done for her since she got home and that she would be capable of being alone for a couple of hours. So the eldest had signed up and instantly began saying no to most people that she came in contact with on it. None of them seemed to have the mental capacity to understand anything of what she had gone through. But then, one day, she stumbled across a man's page and he piqued her interest. She looked through his profile that had serious philosophical quotes on it and had handsome pictures of him and with a woman that looked like his carbon copy. In a lapse of judgment, Calypso said yes to talking with him. She was asked out within the first twenty minutes of their conversation, and after she had triple checked with Persephone that she would be okay with it, the blonde had agreed to meet him for one date.
Now that the evening of their date was there, she was already having doubts. After being shoved out of the door by her younger sister, she slowly started making her way to the restaurant that they had agreed upon. It was strange to be walking the streets of the district alone, seeing as she generally had her younger sister with her and they would only go out to run errands for the business or to help Persephone find a muse for some more writing. She held on tightly to the white clutch that she carried, resting it against her baby pink dress as she continued to keep an eye out for the restaurant. She hadn't been to the designated meeting place before, partly because it was a bit newer in the district and largely because she simply never went out. The only time she had been out without her sister since Persephone's return home was to go and try to find out more information on what had happened in the school for gifted children. She needed to find out as much as she could so that she could protect Persephone and hopefully find a way to turn her back into the little sister that she had had years before.
As soon as she had come upon the doors to the restaurant, Calypso took in a deep breath before walking into the restaurant. She gave a warm smile to the hostess before shaking her head as the woman asked her if her entire party was there. "If it's alright with you," the blonde said in a sweet tone, "I'd like to stay at the front to wait for him." The hostess gave her a smile before nodding and commenting that she would make certain that there would be a table reserved for them. Calypso grinned and quietly thanked her before looking at the door, waiting for her date to show up and partially wishing that he never would.

It wasn’t his first blind date, but it was his first blind date set up by his friends online. They didn’t even know her, just a picture and a name. They said she was hot and blonde, so that was good enough for him, though he did worry that his friends were making it all up. Even if the date doesn’t go well, he could still probably take her back to his apartment and have some fun. He’d do what he always did. Tell them he had an early day tomorrow and he had fun, say that he’ll call, and then push them out of the door, never to see them again. Some of them come by, but eventually they get the hint. He didn’t have much hope for this blind date, none of the women he’d been with ever interested him long enough. They were all really good for only one thing. Cam put on a black button down and slacks, ran his fingers through his hair a few times, and then slapped on some aftershave. He took a good look at himself in the mirror, “damn, I look good.”
He’d never been to the restaurant his friend told him to go to. Why the hell did he pick a restaurant? Couldn’t they go to a bar or something? He was on his way there when he suddenly remembered he didn’t have any protection in his wallet. Time to stock up, he thought as turned a corner to go to the store. He could probably get it after dinner, but he didn’t want to have to wait. If there’s one thing he ever learned from his dad, don’t screw up with women. Cam walked faster as he neared the restaurant, tucking his wallet into his pocket. He spotted a woman with her back turned to him, tall with blonde hair. That must be here. “Yooo. You’re Calypso right? I’m Cam. Hey, both C’s!” he said. “Sorry I’m late, had to pick up a few things from the store, if you know what I mean. You got us a table, or what?” He asked, then turned to the hostess who was walking up to them. “Oh, hey Vannessa. Damn you look fine tonight. What’s up girl? You got a table for me and my date?”

Calypso only had to wait a moment before hearing someone say her name. She turned and widened her eyes as he spoke, her mouth opening to ask if this was some kind of joke before turning back to the hostess as he spoke to her. She laughed, simply because she had no clue what else to do in that instant. This had to have been some sort of nightmare for her, one that she was destined to wake up from eventually. She looked at the hostess and gave her an apologetic smile before taking a step closer to her. "I apologize for my date," she said quietly before looking back as she tried to hide the disgust that was probably exuding from her pores. "If you could seat us somewhere that there are people around, I would greatly appreciate it," she whispered before grinning as the hostess nodded and grabbed two menus and proceeded to escort them to their seats.
The entire time that they were walking to the table, the blonde was trying to pull herself together. She had known better than to go on dates with weird men that she met online. But Persephone had seemed so excited when Calypso had told her that she had been asked out, and Calypso couldn't take away the little excitement that she brought to her sister's life. If all else failed from this night and the man she was on a date with really was as atrocious as he presented himself to be, it would at least be an interesting story to bring back to her sister. They might get a couple chuckles at Calypso's expense, but she would put herself through just about anything as long as it meant that her sister would smile again.
When they approached the table, she thanked the hostess softly as she silently counted her blessings that Vannessa has actually seated them in the middle of the restaurant, completely surrounded by people. She proceeded to take a seat and give her date a forced smile as she picked up her menu. "Well, Camden," she said softly before looking around the restaurant as she took in the decor. "This seems to be a popular choice for a date," she said before biting the inside of her cheek as she looked down at the menu. "It's a very nice pick," she commented casually as she read through the options, deciding quite quickly on the pasta with cream sauce and vegetables. "So tell me something about yourself, Camden."

Cam followed her to the table, watching the bare skin of her back and fantasizing about what she might look like with it off. He was already prepared for the night and he had to give it up to his friend, she was hot. She was like a lot of the women in the District, poised and proper. He liked those types too, everyone opened up to him eventually. Women were all the same. Charm them up a bit and they're willing to do anything.
"Thanks, V!" he said and sat down across from Calypso. "What? Oh yea, it's pretty swanky right? James said you looked like you'd like this place. He said to say hey, by the way." He looked down at the menu and searched for the most expensive thing there. It didn't matter if he liked it or not, he always got the most expensive thing, it impressed the ladies.
"Oh something about me?" He asked. Why would she ask that? He was Camden. THE Camden. What more is there to say? He's a Victor, did she want him to show her a trophy or something?
"What, you don't recognize me?" He turned to the table next to them at a couple, "hey, yo, you know who I am?" The two of them nodded before he turned back to Calypso. "See they know me."

Calypso set the menu down and looked at her date, unable to wipe the expression of confusion off of her face. "Pardon my language, but who the hell is James, why is he picking our date location, and why is he saying hey to me when I have absolutely no idea who he is?" She couldn't help the scowl that came across her face before she let out a huff of air, trying to calm herself down. Surely, he couldn't actually be as rude and obnoxious as he appeared. It must be an act or some joke or his nerves for being on a date.
Whatever benefit of the doubt she had been intending on giving him was quickly ripped away as he turned to the table next to them and interrupted their evening. She gasped before looking over at them. "I apologize for his incredibly wretched behavior," she said sincerely before turning her head and looking at him. She shook her head, closing her eyes as she took a deep breath in before looking at Camden. "Frankly, Camden, I don't care if they know you or not. I'm asking you about yourself because that's what people do on first dates. They get to know the person they've asked out - or, sadly, accepted an invitation from." She took a sip of her water before looking back to him and shaking her head. "To answer your question, no. I do not recognize you. If you had cared about actually reading my profile, you would see that I don't really go out a ton seeing as I'm a very busy woman who owns her own business. I don't pay any attention to things regarding pop culture because, simply, I don't care to. Now, how about we sit here and try to talk and make normal conversation like two mature adults? If you don't think you can handle that, I'm more than happy to sit here in silence."

"James, my friend. He's the guy who set this whole thing up. I really had no idea," he laughed. "He just told me this literally two hours ago that he made an account for me. I really have him to thank, you're pretty hot, you know that?" He ordered his food and then opened up his mobile to check his messages quickly. James had been sending him advice on what to do, as if he, Cam needed advice.
Cam sat back, slightly stunned. He'd never had anyone speak to him like this. He scoffed, "wow you're... really. Intense! That's so wicked awesome!" He put his fist up in front of her to do a fist bump, but he realized within a few seconds that he would be left hanging. "Right. Well, okay so if you want to do the whole first date shebang, let's do it. This is new! Really cool!" Even though he was taken back by her outburst, he had to admit it was kind of sexy.
"I'm Camden J. Bradford, 66th Hunger Games Victor. I'm actually a big deal," he gave a confident smile but it slowly faded when he realized he wasn't getting much of a reaction.
"Buuuuut-- I can tell you don't really care... sooo..." He rubbed the five o'clock shadow he didn't bother to shave. "You own a business? That's pretty cool. What's your business? Like jewelry or fashion? I know girls are really into that and you look like a really fashionable person." He turned the attention to her since he didn't really know what to say other than that. Most people hear "Victor" and it's like the panties come off. Or if it's guys, they'd buy him drinks and try to be his friends. He did have some guys try to throw themselves at him, too. But Cam didn't swing that way.

Suddenly, it all made sense. That was the reason that Cam didn't live up to his profile with the deep philosophical quotes: that was never him in the first place. She was about to open her mouth when the server came and took their order. She took in a deep breath before ordering, her eyes going to the server before looking back to Camden and catching him on his phone. "Oh, I'm sorry. Am I boring you?" She gestured to his phone before rolling her eyes as she crossed her arms, unable to wipe the annoyed look off of her face.
Calypso watched him, fighting the eye roll that threatened to surface. She watched as he help out his fist and she kinked her brow up, seriously unimpressed by the gesture. She couldn't believe just how awfully the night had been going and they hadn't even gotten through the meal yet. She listened to him as he talked about how he was a big deal because he was a victor and she gave a tight-lipped smile as she slowly nodded her head. That explained some of his behavior, but she wasn't going to let it excuse his rudeness to her.
The blonde looked at him and nodded her head in response to his question. "I own a business, yes. I own Aphrodite's Diamonds. It's been a family business for years and my parents left it to me to take care of." She watched him and, for the first time, was genuinely curious about what was going through his head. She had absolutely no interest in getting to know Cam, the glorified frat boy, and she had no interest in getting to know Camden J. Bradford, 66th Annual Hunger Games Victor. She wanted to get to know Camden, the guy that he was behind all of that. However, she didn't necessarily even believe that there was a Camden that wasn't either of the two.
"So what's your family like? Are they close or anything?"

Cam looked up at her and stuffed his mobile in his pocket, "my bad."
Sheesh, she was really uptight. He shrugged it off and thought about that lower back he saw earlier. This would be worth it. Just put up with her for an hour or so and he could take her home. But even he was beginning to wonder if he actually could. She didn't seem like the type to just go home with anybody. But Cam reminded himself, he wasn't just anybody. He was Camden J. Bradford, 66th Hunger Games Victor. He could do anything and have anyone he wanted. He just had to turn up the charms a little for Ms. Calypso.
"Aphrodite's Diamonds, for real!?" he smiled, "my sister loves that place. I got her a necklace from there on her last birthday. White gold chain, and a 4 carat round diamond. Flawless. My sister loves diamonds, can you tell?" He loved his sister and missed her, since he hardly ever saw her. The last time he'd seen Acadia was six months ago. "So uh, does that mean your parents died or they just decided you could run the whole thing by yourself now?" He almost asked her how old she was, but remembered his sister yelling at him once about it when he asked her best friend how old she was because she looked to be about 30. That was probably the wrong age, but how the hell could he tell? She always packed her face with makeup.
"My family?" he repeated and then looked for their waiter. He caught eyes with him, "Yo! My man, a bottle of your most expensive champagne!" He yelled across the restaurant. "Uh yeah, so family." Cam wanted to avoid the topic, but Calypso didn't seem like she'd let him get off so easily. "Eh," he shrugged, "they're whatever. Sister's a genius, she's in training for something. Brother's dead. Parents divorced. You know, the usual."
The champagne didn't take long to get there and as soon as the waiter poured him a glass, he drank it in one gulp. "Man, this is weak. Wanna do shots instead?"

Calypso had been really trying to not get upset and irritated by Camden's actions, but she was finding it to be very difficult with the way he acted. She wasn't looking around to play games, especially not when she had left Persephone home alone and who knew if any of the other personalities would come out and do something while Calypso was out. All she felt like to Camden was that she was just some game for him to play that evening. She wasn't about to let him start thinking that she would go home with him or that he could charm himself into another date. She had already decided that that ship had sailed. There would definitely be no second date, and Calypso was going to delete that stupid dating app and tell Persephone that it just wasn't going to work out for her.
She listened to him before giving him the first genuine smile that she had had the entire evening. "Well, we are the best at what we do. My parents taught me well." She sighed softly before letting the smile fall off of her face. "Yeah, my parents died a couple of years ago," she lied before shrugging her shoulders. She wasn't about to tell him that her parents could be dead for all she knew; that they had packed up their things when things got rough for her little sister because of a choice that they had made for her. If she admitted to that, then Persephone would be dead and that was something that Calypso was not willing to risk have happening.
The blonde cringed as he shouted to the waiter, shaking her head as she took in a deep breath. Definitely not a wise idea to have been seated in the middle of the restaurant. She only brought her eyes to him as he spoke of his family. She frowned as he said it was the usual before shaking her head as she gave him a small smile. "No, it's not the usual. But having a genius sister is definitely something I can understand. And I'm sorry to hear about your brother."
She couldn't help but let her jaw drop as he drank the entire glass of champagne in one go. She thanked their server quietly before taking a sip of her champagne, nearly choking on it at his suggestion. "I'm quite alright with the champagne. Shots aren't really my idea of appropriate behavior for a first date."

"A couple of years ago? That must be rough. Did they die at the same time?" Cam wasn't a genius like his sister, and perhaps he wasn't the best at reading women. But as a person who has had first hand experience in loss, he knew exactly what that felt like.
Cam didn't want to think about his family, talking about them was the last thing on his to-do-list every day. In fact, he rarely ever talked about them. Except for his sister, she was perhaps the only good thing in his life. "It's whatever. Acadia is supposed to visit sometime this month, if they can afford to let her leave. They offered her a spot at the Capitol's research facility, but she didn't want to be too far from home. I guess it didn't really matter with the amount of free time they're giving her," he shrugged. Yes, Acadia was the only thing he could talk about that pertained to his family. "What about you? You got a brother or sister?"
He laughed and mimicked her, "appropriate behavior."
"Are you always so poised?" He filled up his glass. "Not saying it's a bad thing. You've got that whole classy vibe thing going on and it's working for you. But maybe let your hair down once in a while."

Calypso could feel her throat tighten as he inquired more about her parents, looking around for a way to calm herself down. She rarely spoke of her parents anymore and couldn't believe that she was here talking about it with someone she barely knew. And she had lied. Her parents weren't physically dead, but they were dead to her. "Yeah," she said as she nodded her head. "They died at the same time late one night. We woke up to find them gone."
The blonde listened to him as he talked about his sister and almost felt her heart stop as he mentioned her working at one of the Capitol's research facilities. She couldn't even begin to think about how their sisters could have easily crossed paths at some point, and the thought chilled her to the bone. Could his sister be one of the people who turned Persephone into what she had become? There was no way to know for sure, but it was enough to make her stomach turn and her head begin to get dizzy. She blinked a couple of times as she asked her about Persephone before giving him a small smile. "I have a younger sister. She's everything to me."
She watched him, taking a sip of her champagne as she shook her head. "No, I'm not always so poised. But, given that I barely know you, I'm not comfortable 'letting my hair down' around you yet." She shrugged her shoulders before looking at him. "I haven't really received a good reason to let myself be comfortable around you. One of the first things you commented on was how 'hot' I am after you had already told another girl that she was looking 'fine tonight'. I'm not sure you've earned that side of me yet."

Cam stopped mid drink and looked at her. Gone? Or dead? Cam was confused and he was about to ask, but even he knew that would have been a bad idea. He tilted his glass up again and continued to drink, pretending as if their conversation was going normal, like he hadn't noticed anything odd.
"I'm sorry to heart that," he said, which is what's the proper thing to say to people when they've lost someone. But it sounded hollow and insincere to him.
"Ah, so that explains it," he said and smiled. A younger sister and no parents. No wonder she was so uptight. She probably had the world on her shoulders, something that Cam knew little about. He'd avoided responsibilities like a plague. "What's her name? This little sister of yours."
Cam had absolutely no clue what she was talking about. She was hot, what was wrong with telling her that? "You being hot is a compliment, when the hell is receiving a compliment ever a bad thing?" he was confused, from all his years of hooking up with girls, he'd learned that telling someone they were hot always got him the goods. This girl was complicated and he wasn't sure how much complication he really needed in his life. He shook his head, at himself. He was being like a lot of the females he knew. Indecisive. She was hot, yes. He liked her, yes. But at the same time, he didn't like her. What the hell was wrong with him!?
"So it's bad to compliment other people? Look, I'm just being honest here. You're hot, she looks fine. Hell, even baldy over there with the swirly mustache looks amazing," he said. Their food finally arrived, which he was grateful for because it at least gave him a distraction. "Gotta say, this is probably the fanciest restaurant I've been to," he said as he looked at a lobster over a steak with sauce that looked like it glittered and all kinds of weird green and red specks all over his plate. There was also some swirly looking frosting around his plate. Not to mention the plate was humongous, it took up half the table.
"So, Ms. Calypso. How do I earn that hair-down side of you?" he asked as he cut into his food.

Calypso gave Camden a small smile as he said the words that everyone said when someone passed away. She knew better than to respond because how else was she supposed to respond? "Oh, no. Don't apologize for our awful parents who chose to abandon their sick daughter because it became inconvenient for them?" No, no. She knew that a smile normally did the trick and would often move the conversation onto some other topic that was generally more light-hearted. No one wanted to know about the bad things that happened in life.
The blonde couldn't help as her smile widened when he asked about her sister. Persephone was her pride and joy, the only person she truly loved and looked forward to seeing. "Persephone," she said before chuckling as she reached for her champagne, taking a sip of it. "She's pretty special. She's the best part of my life."
She couldn't help the short bark of laughter that left her mouth as she shook her head. "You know, I think being complimented on something that you're born with rather than something you've accomplished is a bit shallow." She took in a deep breath as she tried to calm herself down. She knew that he was basically acting like a teenage boy who had never been taught how to appropriately treat women, but it was something that infuriated her. Yes, he was physically attractive; there was no denying that. His personality, however, didn't quite match up to his outward appearances. At least, it didn't for her. She wasn't some girl who was just going to go home and sleep with him. She had responsibilities and very little time for romance, but that didn't mean she would just give it up for anyone who took her out.
Her eyes narrowed before she scoffed quietly. "Evidently no one ever taught you to not flirt with women while you're on a date with another." She looked up at the server, giving him a small smile before taking her napkin and laying it across her lap. She looked at Camden's plate and couldn't help the chuckle that escaped her lips before she looked at her own plate, filled with pasta and vegetables. "It's definitely the fanciest one I've been to. Haven't been to many so this definitely takes the cake."
She took a bite of her pasta before looking at him as he asked her how he could earn that side of her. She swallowed her food before taking another sip of the champagne before making eye contact with him. "If you really want to earn it, you can't be flirting with other women on our date." She took another bite, chewing and swallowing before adding, "Or telling me that I'm hot instead of something like beautiful or breathtaking or, gods forbid, intelligent." She pursed her lips before holding a finger up. "You also really can't keep being rude to the wait staff and the other patrons. Patrons are here to have a nice time and don't want to be interrupted and the wait staff are just doing their jobs and trying to ensure that everyone has a good time. They're people too." She then chuckled before looking at him. "I'd also really appreciate it if you didn't openly check me out in front of an entire restaurant." She took another drink of her champagne before finishing it with, "And, to top it all of, it'd be really wonderful if you planned your own dates instead of having your friends plan them for you." She nodded her head before giving him a smirk. "Do that, and you might see that side of Calypso."

Cam's chewing slowed and his hands lowered to the table, setting down his fork and knife. He swallowed his food and drank water slowly, all the while listening to her list. It was a lot for one person. Did people actually do all this? It seemed a bit much. But he supposed all these uptight people were uptight for a reason. Be nice, don't check out people, don't say mean things, don't do this, don't do that. It was all a bunch of don'ts.
He leaned forward with his elbows on the table, crossing his arms. "So what you're saying is, in order for me to see you with your hair down, I have to put my hair up?" He cocked an eyebrow. It was a funny way of saying it, but it made sense to him. He had to be one of those uptight pricks just to be on her good side. It didn't seem that fun or that worth it.
"Do you always like to put your boyfriends in a short leash?" He picked up his fork and knife again.
