I didn't know
The rules do not apply
I'm a part of that
Aren't I?
Elodie always wanted to be the one to lead the troops into battle. Bullets would fly, screams would be heard, and sticks would be broken on the ground by muddy boots. Victory would become of her team with congratulations in store. A promotion. Another battle won. Storming the Capitol and being able to take over the President's Mansion. All thanks to her plan, dodgy stealth, and perfect maneuvering. They would chant Elodie's name: the running girl who became the girl that defeated the Capitol. Maybe she could be President, or at least on a council. She knew she would make things fair to everyone. After all, she always gave everyone a chance.
But the reality for the red-haired girl was much, much different.
Failure, before the start of the rebellion, was something Elodie didn't know. She had always gotten superb grades in school, she had gotten a job that someone got every ten years, and she was on the fast track to becoming one of District 13's greatest assets. How could a girl who was destined to succeed fail so badly? Elodie was surprised when she woke up in the hospital. Back in District 4, she honestly thought she was going to die. But death hadn't taken her yet, and instead of relief, she felt sorrow. She was the sole survivor of the operation, she was told, with Finnick Odair being captured and everyone on the engineering team dead. She had a lot of deaths on her belt now. That's war, people would say. It wasn't your fault, you did exactly as you were asked. But for Elodie, the words went in one ear and went out the other. She didn't care if that was war. Those men and women were under her command, and she was the one to blame. It never left her mind.
The thrill of war was starting to wear off on her. It used to be thrilling, but with every defeat that she's had, the worse she feels. Sometimes she would wake up sweating with the sound of gunshots in her ear. Even though she had rehab from getting shot in the arm and in the hip, she still felt crumbled. She tried to stay away from anyone she knew, not wanting to show them the bags under her eyes and how weak she looked. Even so, Elodie still was a smartass and too sarcastic for her own good.
Elodie walked into the large room where the general was. He was the one giving assignments to those who needed them. She stood in the long line of people. One part of her wanted to be on the main team and conquer the mansion, but the other part of her just wanted to stay in District 13 and be backup. She had leadership skills and was capable of doing great things, and yet, she was still a failure.
"Elodie Scott," she said to the general, who nodded solemnly at her. He grabbed a slip of paper and gave it to her. She got out of the line, gripping the piece of paper in her hand tightly. She walked out of the room and leaned against the wall. People were coming and going, but she didn't notice.
She unfolded the piece of paper. From what she saw in videos, she felt like it was the Hunger Games reaping. The escort would unravel the piece of paper, and there would either be cheers or despair. This time, it was just Elodie, who didn't know what she wanted. Her eyes moved down to the words, looking at what it said in black, bold letters.ELODIE SCOTTCAPITOL PRISON TEAM COMMANDERElodie laughed to herself. She wasn't good enough to be on the President's Mansion Team. This was the final battle, she was told. Elodie Scott wouldn't be a memorable name, just one that would be passed by in the history books as a forgotten face with a forgotten name. Just another soldier. She should've realized it sooner. She was never special. She was just another soldier just like everybody else in District 13. She leaned her head against the wall, putting the piece of paper in her pocket. She wasn't going to argue. All she wanted was to become somebody, and instead, she would just be a nobody.
