Illias' mind was a mess. In one night, it felt like his entire world had been flipped upside down. He had always thought of his brother as the most stable thing in Panem, the person he trusted more than anyone else and who he knew better than anyone else ever could. But he'd been wrong, hadn't he? Because not only was his brother helping the rebels that threatened to destroy Panem, but he was going to be part of a fight for the Capitol that began tomorrow. And Illias had had to promise not to tell a soul. After leaving Eryx, he had simply walked the streets of the Capitol with no direction. He noticed no one and nothing, just needing the movement. The Hunger Games were starting tomorrow - at least the pre-Games anyway - and he already had enough on his plate. He wasn't a head GM this time, but that didn't mean he was kicking back and watching things play out. To start a rebel attack at the same time as the Hunger Games? It seemed ridiculous, foolish, and... just incredibly dumb. He wanted nothing to do with it all, and yet, what kind of choice would he have when tomorrow came? Eventually, Illias' steps found a direction. He found a destination before he'd entirely realized where he was going. Then he was standing outside Aurora Swiftgold's apartment, running his fingers through hair that had already taken that abuse several times in the last hour. He knew he looked like shit. He was in no shape to be seeing a girl - or rather for a girl to be seeing him - which is what made him hesitate. He would do better to show up at the door of one the many girls he'd slept with for fun. Some of them would take him in without question and be very persuasive in getting his mind onto other things. He could rely on them for that, as he always could. Yet he was standing here, in front of the apartment of a girl he'd promised to keep an open heart about. Illias shifted feet. He hadn't slept with Aurora yet. That was a source of frustration for him, and yet, being around Aurora was still something he wanted. He still wanted to spend time with her, even though it might not lead to that night's happy ending for him. When Eryx had told him what was coming tomorrow, he'd thought about her and realized that her safety was important to him. He cared if something happened to her, beyond his general compassion for people he knew. That's why he was here. That, and there was so much left... undone. He didn't know what tomorrow would bring, and that uncertainty ate at him. Raising a first, he knocked on Aurora's door and hoped she was home. WC: 473 Tag: Aurora SwiftgoldNotes: We can totally still work on the other thread if you want to continue it, but I had some fun ideas for this new thread, so thought I'd start it! Also, for anyone following Illias' journey, the conversation with Eryx is/was happening in Slack chat in the ICC thread thing.

Oh, won't you stay with me? 'Cause you're all I need.
Aurora sat in her apartment, her pen writing at what felt like a thousand words a second. With the Hunger Games upon them, the event planner had her hands full with party planning. She was planning watch parties, parties for the Reaping, and parties for once they were finished. The one guaranteed thing about the Games was that she always had a busy spot during the year where she was guaranteed a job. And even as her pen flew and her ideas poured out onto the pages in her planning notebook, she couldn't help but feel distracted. She was distracted by a certain game-maker; more so distracted by her lack of him. Since their decisive conversation in the train station, she had held firm in her belief of being wooed and had not yet slept with Illias Delos, no matter how badly she had wanted to. She was enjoying the getting to know him phase, and she liked their banter and how he made her feel.
But she knew that he was most likely going to be quite occupied for a while. The Games were a big deal, even if he wasn't the head GM for it. She knew that he would be helping to make it eventful and entertaining, which would inevitably make her parties much more exciting. Even though she would much rather have him with her at the parties to ward off any men who would approach her - not unlike he did - she knew that work came first. Working around the clock was something that she understood, though not necessarily to the degree of a game-maker. But she understood it enough to know that the wooing would have to be put on pause for the time being, and she had come to accept that. After all, if she was as distracted as she was without him being around, she couldn't even begin to picture what it would be like if he was.
The brunette heard a knock on her door, which caused her brows to furrow in confusion. She wasn't expecting any visitors, which could have been a given due to the fact that she was dressed in a sweater and leggings. She stood from her desk and made her way to the front door. When she opened it, the grin that spread across her face upon seeing Illias outside of her door was something that she couldn't fight. However, the smile vanished almost as quickly as it had appeared as she looked at him, seeing his unkept hair and overall different demeanor. She opened the door wider, stepping outside of it to place a hand on his cheek before leaning up and kissing him softly before looking at him.
"Is everything alright?" she asked as she pulled away, moving back into her apartment and motioning for him to follow. "I thought you would be busy with work for a while, so I'm a bit surprised to see you here."

As the door opened, Illias looked up with a sort of relief at the presence of Aurora. She wasn't dressed like he had seen her before, her clothing plain and comfortable. That hardly mattered right now though. What did matter was that she was home, because the only thing he could think of doing tonight was seeing her. Who knew what tomorrow would bring. Would he make it to the day after tomorrow? Would she? Would his brother, or Ambrosia, or tiny little Saraph? Those thoughts scared him, and Illias Delos was quite unused to being scared. He'd only been scared for his life one time, years ago as a result of his own stupidity when that mutt attacked him, but what he felt tonight was worse. Aurora smiled, and he gave a weak one back, but was grateful that she almost immediately noticed that this wasn't a normal social call. "Aurora," he simply said in greeting before she stepped into the hallway and kissed him. When she pulled back to move into her apartment, he followed instinctively, closing the door behind him. He leaned against it for a moment, almost a barrier to stop him from just kissing her and to hell with words. He couldn't tell her much, though, could he? Or anything, really. He couldn't tell her rebels were coming tomorrow morning, or that his twin brother had been working with them for years. He couldn't tell her that he didn't understand what was happening in his own city. But he had to tell her something so that tomorrow, when the world went to shit, she'd be safe. He knew he wouldn't be able to be here with her, because to miss the Gamemakers' reaping celebration would be far too suspicious. Illias ran a hand through his hair again as she asked her question. A better one: was anything alright? "I didn't plan to come here," he began, which was true. "Everything isn't alright, and I can't... I can't explain it all. I can't explain anything. I just needed to see you." He pushed himself off the door and stepped closer to her. Putting a hand on the small of her back, he pulled her closer to him. It was distracting, that closeness, but he wouldn't have to push away the thoughts it brought for much longer. His other hand brushed her cheek. "I need you to promise me something," he said, smiling a little as if he could somehow make what he was going to say less serious. "Promise me that you will stay in your apartment tomorrow, no matter what. It will all make sense soon, but I need you to stay here unless... you can't. And if you can't, get as low as you can. Please, just promise it." Illias knew he wouldn't agree to a promise like that himself, that he had always touted himself as a man who could do whatever he wanted. He'd need more information. Hopefully, Aurora was nothing like himself in this aspect. Eryx had said that the rebels weren't going to target civilians tomorrow, so that should mean Aurora and her apartment building was safe. But it was a battle. If he'd learned one thing from being a Gamemaker during the Hunger Games, it was that battles didn't usually go how you thought they would, or fit within the parameters you set. Civilians would get hurt tomorrow, and he didn't want her to be one of them. WC: 579 Tag: Aurora Swiftgold

Aurora studied the face of the man that had challenged her, and she couldn't help but feel her heart break for him as she watched him. The only time she had ever seen him look remotely distraught was the day that she had run into him at the train station. But the look that she saw with him now made that day pale in comparison. Seeing him this way brought conflicting emotions to the event planner. On one hand, she was happy that he was there in that state because it showed her that he was taking their deal seriously. She couldn't imagine him being willing to show up looking less than perfect to someone with whom he hadn't been intimate with yet unless he was being serious about his word.
But while she was grateful that he was there and showing her this side of him, it caused her to worry. There had to be something seriously wrong for him to be there when he wasn't planning on it. But then she heard his words, "I just needed to see you," and her heart melted while worry simultaneously began to drown her. She instinctively grasped onto him, her eyes never leaving his as she waited to hear what he would say next. She wanted to help him - needed to help him - but she didn't know how. She wouldn't be able to know if there was anything that she could do to help ease the burden that he was so evidently carrying.
She watched him as he spoke and a small smile graced his lips, though the action provided her no comfort. She listened to his words and blinked a couple of times as she arched back to look at him, to try and see if there was any trace of teasing on his face. This was her busiest season of the year. There wasn't a shot in hell that she would be able to just stay in her apartment. She looked at him and shook her head, her hands moving from him to rub her temples as she let out a humorless chuckle. "Illias, you can't be serious. You can't be asking me to promise you something like that without any explanation." She looked up at him before shaking her head again and backing out of his arms, turning from him so that she could pace. Pacing had always been something that helped her think or, in some instances, calm down. She couldn't stop the pacing that she had started as she thought through everything. He was asking her to blow off her career and stay indoors when she was supposed to be out in the Capitol running around like a mad woman as she put finishing touches on everything. There wasn't any possible way that she would be able to stay inside, she knew that.
"This is the busiest time of the year for me," she started as the speed of her pacing began to pick up. "I have countless parties I'm supposed to be planning and getting decorations for and putting in food orders for and so many other things." She laughed before stopping and turning to face Illias, unable to wipe off the look of concern that was painted over her face as she locked her eyes with his. "Illias, I can't give up the busiest time of my career unless there's a reason for it." She walked over to him, wrapping her arms around him as she laid her head against his chest and tried to block out the thoughts of constant worry. "If I don't go out there tomorrow to plan these events, my career is over." She looked up at him and brought one of her hands up to run through his hair before letting it rest on his cheek. She couldn't fathom why he would be asking her to risk her career for an unknown reason. She couldn't understand why he would ask her to do something unless there was a good reason for it.
That was when it hit her: he wouldn't. She didn't know what reason he had behind asking it, but she knew that there had to be a reason. So, as her thoughts died down, she looked into his eyes before whispering, "Promise me that there's a good reason that I'll understand tomorrow and I'll make that promise to you. But if you can't promise me that, then I'm not going to be able to promise you I'll stay inside."

Of course things couldn't be that easy. Of course Aurora wouldn't just accept his vague request at her busiest time of the year. Still, Illias felt like he had to have tried. A part of him did want to tell her why, but he wouldn't. Not at the expense of Eryx and Ambrosia and Saraph. There were still many hours before morning, time enough for him to ruin this rebel attack tomorrow by telling the wrong people the wrong thing. That would lead to his family being killed, and so it was what kept his mouth shut. It wasn't like he could ignore this warning either, though. Running around in the Capitol tomorrow, Aurora could be killed intentionally by these "merciful rebels" or just be caught in the crossfire of something. That couldn't happen. "It is what I'm asking," he replied, a bit weakly, at her initial rejection. She moved away from him and took to pacing. His eyes followed her back and forth, letting her get out whatever it was she needed to get out. He was only half listening. After all, he hadn't exactly been immediately down with Eryx's whole double life thing. He still wasn't, and if he was a pacer during that conversation, he very much would have paced. He was trying to be as patient as he could though - which currently, wasn't very - and let her pace and talk in silence. She came back to him, and his arms instinctively encircled her again. "I know," he said, when she told him her career would be over. Oh, it mostly definitely would be over, same as his, but what was most important was that she kept her life. Illias had no idea how to sell this request of his, so simply tried to give her a little more time. She still touched him, ran her fingers through his hair and looked at him as if asking for him to just give up the joke. He wished it was a joke. Maybe tomorrow would come and go without a rebel face in the Capitol, but he doubted it. Eryx had no reason to lie to his twin brother - even though he'd been lying for years. This was different. Eryx would have no reason to shatter Illias' world like he had, and expect him to make his peace with it and choose his side by tomorrow morning. It was a relief when Aurora seemed to finally come around to the idea, to ask him for a promise in return to the one he'd asked her to make. This, he could do easily. "Aurora, I promise that there is a very good reason for you to stay inside tomorrow, and you'll know it when it comes. I wouldn't ask you this if it wasn't important. So will you stay inside this building, no matter what's going on out there?" His eyes stayed on hers, hoping for a positive answer so that he could move on to his next, almost equally important right now, matter of business. WC: 507 Tag: Aurora SwiftgoldNotes:

Aurora had known something was wrong when Illias had shown up at her door looking the way that he did, but she hadn't anticipated that it could be something that was so awful he would ask her to risk her career for it. Granted, she didn't know what it was, but she could tell that it worried him enough that he would be concerned for her safety. That in itself was enough for her to consider his request. He knew what her job meant to her - she had voiced her passion for it numerous times. So the fact that he was asking her to throw it all away, she knew that it had to be something that would inevitably be worth it. While that didn't comfort her in the way that she had hoped it would, it was some comfort to know that he wasn't just asking it of her for no reason.
Standing in his arms, it was almost as if a wave of calmness washed over her. The brunette knew that something was going on, but being there with him seemed to help her come down from the anxiety that the request had initially built up inside of her. She let her eyes stay on his as he promised her that there was a good reason. She let out the breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding before nodding her head reluctantly. "Okay," she whispered as she looked at him before sighing softly. "I promise that I won't leave this building unless I have to. Then if I leave this building, I'll make sure I stay low." She looked up at him and rested her hand on the side of his face, taking in her view.
As she stood there staring at Illias's face, she couldn't help but worry. If something awful was going to happen tomorrow, then she knew two things that she needed. One of those things was something she was sure that Illias would be more than happy to give her, but the other thing was something she didn't necessarily know if he'd be willing to give her. He stood there, asking her to promise him that she would be safe the next day. But he said nothing of if he would be following the same request he had asked of her. The thought of there being something that he would be asking her to risk everything she had ever known in order to be safe from brought a boatload of worries to her. If he was this worried about her, then she knew that she had a right to worry about him.
"I know that you probably won't be able to promise me this," she started as she looked up at him, biting her lower lip gently. "But, if you can, promise me that you'll try and come back here tomorrow night after everything is said and done. I want you to be able to come back here and make me laugh and kiss me again." She leaned in and pressed her lips to his softly, her whole body shaking with the worry that he had brought to her. "Please promise you'll try to come back to get me."

Illias felt his worry ease as Aurora promised to do what he asked, and he smiled at it. It was one less thing, one less worry in the maelstrom of worries he had for tomorrow. Maybe it wouldn't matter. Maybe tomorrow, the entire Capitol would be bombed and all that would be left was the shell of this once great city. He believed that Eryx believed these rebels valued saving lives over destroying them all, but he had no such proof. He knew how devastating the rebellion in District 4 had been, and knew that there had been tiny rebellions all over Panem that he never even knew about. Until he was face to face with this group Eryx had been a part of for years, there was no telling what he could expect from them. Face to face. If a rebel came face to face with a Gamemaker, would he be spared? Or would he simply be shot and his murderer move on to the next victim? It was impossible to know. Illias himself had never imagined raising a gun or a knife to anyone. Sure, he could do pretty well in a bar fight if he had to - and more than once, he'd had to - but that was the extent of his own violence. He didn't, he was not a killer. The girl in front of him certainly wasn't either, and the last thing he wanted was for her to have to decide whether or not to end another person's life. Aurora touched his face, and Illias hoped the time for words was done now. He'd done what he needed to do, and was ready to move on to what he wanted to do. But just as he was about to kiss her, she spoke again. She asked a promise of him in return, but like the promises she had asked of him before, they weren't suffocating and restricting. She was asking him to try to come back to her tomorrow night. God, if he somehow did survive tomorrow, why the hell not? What else would he have? Assuming Eryx also survived, and Ambrosia and Saraph, that everyone was okay, he didn't know where else he'd have to go. There wouldn't be anywhere safe in the Capitol, he wouldn't think. He wouldn't go back to his own apartment, wouldn't stay in the Gamemaker building. And it was funny, but there was something he liked in knowing that there would be someone waiting for him to come home. Illias ran a finger along Aurora's bottom lip, a half smile on his own lips. "I promise," he began, his voice soft, "that if I can, I'll come back to you tomorrow." His other hand ran along her side, tracling her outline carefully. "In the meantime, it's still tonight, and it doesn't do us any good to worry about tomorrow." He kissed her, gently, but used the move to walk them back a few steps. He hadn't been inside her apartment before, but he was pretty sure he had a sixth sense about where bedrooms were in a place. He pulled back to whisper in her ear. "Take my mind of everything else tonight, Aurora." WC: 534 Tag: Aurora Swiftgold
