Kira finally had a big auditions after six months with only three small jobs. It was hurting her ego, one that used to be as big as Panem itself. It wasn't as if she didn't practice all the time, because she danced every day. Even with her secretary job in the Nut, she still found a way to dance in her home. She saw a poster in the Square about auditions for a big musical about the Dark Days. It wasn't a modeling gig, which she was tired of, but it was something she had always wanted to do. If she could get a big break in this musical, she could potentially get out of the hellhole known as District 2. She hated living in 2. It was nothing like the Capitol, and she hated everything about it.
The girl put on her leotard and dance shoes. She knew next to nothing about the musical, except that they would travel all around Panem and perform for thousands of people. It was exciting. Kira was starting to get older, and she knew when she hit 30, people wouldn't want her around anymore. That's what happened in the Capitol--she got too old and she was dropped. She always replayed the memory in her head of what she did wrong in the past 10 years, but she knew it was next to nothing. She was just worn and she wasn't as passionate about modeling.
The curly-haired girl walked to the high school auditorium, which was really the only place that could hold dancing auditions in District 2. The district itself was still being rebuilt, but it was a proud district. That was the one thing she enjoyed. She looked at the people gathered outside the school. There was probably 30 of them, and she wondered if they were all deported from the Capitol. Right now, the big city didn't need entertainers--they needed scientists, technicians, and war heroes. Kira wasn't any of those.
She stood in line. She was so nervous that she was shaking. They had probably already had auditions in District 1, and she wondered how many people they would take. Too many could result in organization, and she wondered if she could even come close to making it. She needed this job more than anything. She needed to prove that she was talented, and that her previous fame from the Capitol wouldn't give her a leg up. Kira Collins was a great dancer, and she had to keep convincing herself of that.
They gave her a number, 27, and put her into the auditorium with the other dancers. Some of them were friends and whispered to each other. Others were alone, like Kira, and stretched out as they waited for the director and choreographer. She had to relax. Everything was going to be okay. She would try her best, and if she didn't make it, she would move on to another job. It was as simple as that. But Kira knew it wasn't. If she didn't get this job, she knew that it was probably over for the girl.
The choreographer started teaching the dance to the dancers, and Kira followed their lead. They were great, and though she didn't know who they were, she knew that they would make the show great. She was towards the back, hoping that her hair or her dancing would be noticed. But there were 30 other men and woman, so she wondered if she would at all.
Once the dance was taught, the choreographer told them that the audition started now. The director finally showed up. Everyone stood up straighter and smiled, as did Kira. But once the director showed up on stage, her smile turned into a look of fear. She knew that she wouldn't get a part now. It was her ex, Oliver, who she walked out on years ago. To Kira, things couldn't get much worse. WORD COUNT: 659 TAG: Oliver A. Bennett NOTES: Hope this is alright!

Oliver had already held auditions in The Capitol and District 1. Now he was on to District 2, trying to find some semblance of talent. It had been a difficult road from the beginning. He found that getting the support was actually the easy part, though it took him eight months to get. Getting the money was slightly harder. His sister helped fund him, of course. Her politician friends were also big investors, they thought if they could get their name on the list of people who made this whole thing happened, they could be loved by the people. After all, entertainment has been and always will be the best distraction to a war torn country. It's been ten days since the first official day. On day one, he set everything up. Created flyers, got a personal assistant, talked with the host for a television interview, and had a meeting with the President of Panem himself. The President was an intimidating man, but he was understanding of this need. Panem was rebuilding, there were starving parentless children, and homeless people. While they all needed more nurses, technicians, and constrution workers, Oliver's sister was right. The people of Panem needed a distraction. And this was the perfect one. On day three, he found choreographers and other members of his team. On day six, the auditions in The Capitol finally began. Then they journeyed to District 1. Their train broke down on the way, costing the night of travel. Their audition for District 1 didn't start until late that night and by then, most people weren't waiting in line anymore. On their way back to the train, the conductor was no where to be seen. Another delay. On day ten, they were finally in District 2. At least they were able to set up before people started showing up. It was a mess, something that Oliver had stressed over. He looked out the window of the school, one of the first buildings they had started to rebuilt and used for storage as well as shelter, though now it was mostly empty and almost complete. There people lined up, more than what he had in District 1 at least. That was something. He allowed himself a moment of rest on his cot, he needed a clear head. But his moment was cut short when his assistant knocked on his door. The Capitol and District 1 dancers were fighting again. Yes, he was wrong when he thought getting enough support and money was the difficult part. This, this entire journey was more difficult than anything he'd ever faced and it had only been five days. His assistant retrieved him to attend the audition, it was that time, finally. Oliver walked up to the stage, seeing at about 30 people. He smiled. Surely, he would find at least one person here. He took a deep breath and spoke. "Thank you all for coming. I am Oliver Bennett, the writer and director of this musical," he looked around at each of their faces and stopped. Behind two people was a woman with red curly hair. He knew those curls anywhere. He knew the shape of her face. Of course. Of course he would find her. People of their kind always found each other. He held on to his heart, whatever was left of it, and refused to show any emotion though his voice betrayed him. "Well, let's not waste anymore time. Let's begin," he turned and nodded at the choreographer. His legs shook as he walked down to his seat. Kira Collins. The one woman he'd ever loved, or thought he loved. He also thought she loved him. But she had left, walked out of his life as if she never existed. He wondered for a year after she left, if she'd been a figment of his imagination. Eventually, he was able to push her to the back of his mind. Until now, when she suddenly shows up to his audition. Like a firebomb straight into his heart, the rest that she hadn't destroyed when she left him. The music began and the dancers performed their routine. Oliver tried hard to watch all the dancers, to pay attention. But his eyes were caught on Kira. Every time he looked away, he found his eyes sliding back on her. WC: 723 TAG: Kira Collins

Kira wanted to curse under her breath. She didn't mean for this to happen. She thought that Oliver would be left in the Capitol, doing shows there and casting Capitolites. She never thought that he would be directing a traveling show. It was really the only traveling show, and Oliver had to be directing it. Kira wondered if the hurt feelings would get in the way of her being cast or not. She was young then. She couldn't handle the relationship that the two had, not because she didn't love him, but because their work got in the way. She couldn't handle the pressure and had to walk out. Though she didn't want to admit it, she knew that this extra detail would affect her audition. She didn't know if she wanted to prove to Oliver that she could be successful or if she wanted to do badly on purpose.
The music started, and she felt eyes on her. The pressure was killing her. She started the routine that was shown by the choreographer, trying to be the best. The others around her were better than she thought they were going to be. Kira just wished Oliver would realize that, because when she looked over at him, she saw him looking directly at her. She hated it. When she wanted to be noticed by the director, she didn't mean by her ex-boyfriend. They had been together for five years, and it was something that she never forgot. A lot of times, she regretted what she did. But back then, Kira didn't have a choice. The war was hard on both of them.
She was nervous for the singing audition. It wasn't that she couldn't sing, because she could, but it was an individual audition. She would have to face Oliver one on one, which made her heart race. Kira didn't know if she could do it. She thought that, maybe after the dance audition, she could head out before anyone noticed. She didn't have to audition. She could avoid Oliver and his musical. But that was never the kind of person Kira was. She had to face Oliver, because if she didn't, she knew that she would regret it.
When the music stopped, she was breathing heavily. Normally, after a dance routine, she wouldn't be so short of breath. But the overwhelming, surprise emotions made her heart rush and her breath taken away in a literal sense. The choreographer led the group into the hallway as they waited for their number to be called.
She would be close to last. She hated it. Her foot tapped almost violently on the floor. Kira looked at the clock and counted each number that was being called. She had never been this nervous for an audition. Finally, after what seemed like forever, they called number 27. She stood up straight, nodded, and walked into the auditorium. The space around her felt so empty without 29 other dancers in there.
"Hello," she said when she approached the table. She smiled, trying to avoid eye contact with Oliver but failing miserably. She couldn't stop looking at him. She put her resume and headshot on the table. "I just want to say thank you for this opportunity. This means a lot to me and a lot to the people auditioning." It was like she couldn't stop talking. She never did that. She was a nervous wreck. WORD COUNT: 574 TAG: Oliver A. Bennett

Oliver pried his eyes away from Kira and nodded at the dancers. He looked down at his sheet of paper with the numbers naming each dancer. There were others more graceful than Kira, younger. But he didn't X her name off the list. She was good, he knew she was. No amount of years could erase her talent. While it probably would be best to just cut her off now and save both of them the awkwardness, he needed to see her again. He couldn't leave without seeing her again, even if they didn't speak a word to each other. He just needed to see her face, to make sure she was real. He handed the paper to his assistant. Of the 31 dancers that came, he'd X-ed out 15. Then it was time for the singing part of the audition from the 16 people that were left. Kira was last. She entered the room in that sort of grace that only dancers possessed. And then she spoke, it was the first time Oliver had heard her voice in over 6 years. Oliver looked down at the resume and headshots she presented. Most people had neither. They'd only brought themselves, relying on their skills and not history. Oliver didn't need them, he knew her face, would remember her forever. And he knew her background, up until the time she left him anyways. He couldn't bring himself to speak for a moment, then he nodded. "You may begin when you're ready."WC: 251 TAG: Kira Collins

Kira wondered if Oliver cared that she needed a job. She wondered if he would drop her just to stay away from the drama that would insure between the both of them. There was undoubted tension in the room. One that made her break a sweat. She was rarely nervous during auditions. But this one, with so much riding on the line, she could hear her heart practically beat out of her chest. This wasn't about how talented or young she was. This was about Oliver, and whether he decided if he wanted to push their past relationship aside or linger on how she left him. That was how she would get cast. She knew it, and though she knew he probably wouldn't admit it, he knew it too.
The light-haired girl looked at him, letting his words linger in the air. Everything would be better if she just nodded and sang her audition song. She would just turn around and go out and wait to see what he decided. But Kira was never that type of person. She wasn't one to just shut her mouth. She liked voicing her feelings, and her auditioning was no exception. This was a battle that she had to face with words. Neither of them could ignore the elephant in the room. She was 29 now, and she had a no bullshit policy when it came to things like this.
"You know I'm good, Oliver," she said to him. "You know exactly how I'll sing and how the last part of the audition will go. I know I'm not as young as you're looking for or as pretty, but you know I have experience and talent. I just...is what we had in the past going to get in the way of whether I'll be jobless or not? Because I need this job. If I don't get this job, that's it for me. You don't know what that's like." Kira had passion in her words, knowing that she shouldn't have said anything but couldn't help it. He was living it up in the Capitol. She was in District 2, struggling to make enough money to pay the bills. The only skill she had was in entertainment, and District 2 was a proud district full of physically strong people. She wasn't one of them. She hated being a secretary and keeping notes. She knew she would have to do that someday, but if she could help it, she didn't want that day to be today. He hadn't expected her to say anything, but at the same time he did. She was never a person to keep her opinions to herself. She was as passionate as her hair was red. He was fire and that's exactly what he was playing with. He wasn't sure if he had the energy for that right now. With the play and everything that it cost and the stress and pressure he was under. If HE didn't do this right, it was not only his job, but his life. He wouldn't be killed or anything drastic like that, but he had a feeling that this was his last chance to make things right in his life. This was his sister's last aid to him. And for many people, they would never give him another chance if he screwed it up. He couldn't screw up. Especially not for an old flame. He leaned back on his chair, clicking the bottom of the pen on the table. "I still need to hear you sing Kira," he said in that lazy, casual way. She was right though, he knew how she would sing. And he also knew that this was all for show. And for his ego. He was the director and the writer. This show was his baby, his lifeblood. He wasn't going to just give out parts without an official audition, people looked to him. And if he gave her the part now, he'd lose their respect. It didn't matter that there aside from Kira, there was only one good singer out of the 16 dancers that made it past the dance. Between the other girl and Kira, he really could only take one. And even then, they could still get bumped off if he found a better dancer and singer in the other districts. No one's job was secured. Not the Capitolites or the people from District 1 who 'won' the audition. There was ALWAYS someone better. WC: 327 TAG: Kira Collins

Kira knew what she did was wrong. She shouldn't have said anything. If it was any other director, she would've smiled, sang her song perfectly, and thank them. She shouldn't have treated Oliver any differently. But she did, and she couldn't take it back. Would he think differently because she spoke up? She didn't think so. This was how 20-year-old Kira would act. She felt so immature. When he responded to her in a cool manor, it almost made her more fiery. But words didn't win an audition. They never did.
She nodded. "Yeah, you're right." Kira didn't apologize for what she said though. She didn't need to, and she figured that Oliver knew that too. She cleared her throat, stood up straight, and started singing, moving her hands with how the words went. Ironically, it was a song about falling from grace. She had used that song for the past twelve years. Directors labeled it her signature song, and she was told that she performed it beautifully. She remembered when she sang it in the audition room for Oliver for the show that they met. If she knew he was directing this play, she would've sang something completely different.
When she was done, she nodded at Oliver and thanked them for the audition. She turned away, his face on her mind. She wished she could get over it, but she couldn't. The audition should be on her mind since this was one of her last chances, but Oliver wouldn't leave her head. She sat down outside of the room, her hands folding in her lap. She tapped her foot. Kira assumed she didn't make it. Not after how she acted. WORD COUNT: 285 TAG: Oliver A. Bennett

Oliver spoke to his team. They thought that Kira was better than the younger singer. But that was the thing, Kira was older. They argued that younger performers would be better, but Oliver disagreed. Afterwards, he walked out of the room. The choreographer had told everyone that they would be contacted later in the day if they were chosen, so Oliver assumed that Kira was already gone. When he walked out though, she was still there waiting. Everyone had already gone, everyone except for Kira. "You didn't want to sit at home and worry about whether someone would knock on your door or not?" He asked. Oliver studied her. An almost 30 year old version of the girl he once love. Thought he loved. She was beautiful. Six years and war did not age her like it had others, like it aged him. She was elegant as she always had been, but now she was refined. Kira, though cliche as it might have been, aged like fine wine. He could see her, up on that stage singing a song that resonated into everyone's hearts. "I hope you didn't have your heart set out for the lead, because you didn't get it," he said simply, tucking his hands into the pockets of his slacks. WC: 214 TAG: Kira Collins

Kira knew that she had to stay. As much as she didn't want to, she had to talk to Oliver. There was some obvious tension between them still. He was famous now while she was struggling. It was strange to see the opposite side of things. Maybe if she had never gotten famous, they might have stayed together. But that wasn't the case. As much as he was probably lead to believe, she didn't walk out on him because of his lack of success. Things were so complicated, and even now, she didn't know if she could explain it to him.
"I don't have the patience to wait," Kira said with a small smile when she saw Oliver. It was strange to see him without other people now. Before, she had been in the same room alone with him for four years of living together. Now, it was like talking to a complete stranger. She didn't know what to say and she felt awkward, but if anything, she could have a nice chat with an old friend.
She stood up from her seat below. She knew that this might be a long conversation, and she was prepared for it. When he said she didn't get the lead, she nodded. "Good. I didn't want it. I'm not meant to be a star. If I could get a small chorus part or a backstage tech or even a tree, I would be okay with that." Kira knew that she shouldn't be begging like she was already. "It's just been hard adjusting to life here. I don't have any of the skills required to be a mason or a Peacekeeper. I'm lucky to get a secretary position." Kira knew that she always talked about herself too much, and she hated it. This wasn't about her right now.
"But I'm glad to see you're doing great. This production must be amazing with it going on tour and all. And your writing is fantastic. I know it'll be great no matter what." She smiled at him. She was truly happy for Oliver. WORD COUNT: 354 TAG: Oliver A. Bennett

He didn't like for Kira to beg or try to persuade people in that pleading manner that showed she was desperate. As much as she hurt him, he didn't want that for her. Some part of him, he couldn't tell how big or small yet, wanted her to be happy. Years ago when she'd left him, he thought next time he saw her, he'd hate her. He hated her not being there with him, why should seeing her be any different? But years had passed and his anger and confusion had faded, but not thoroughly and wholly disappeared. Seeing her here, now, in person-- he didn't hate her. And it wasn't as awkward as he thought it would be. It was like seeing an old friend in a very sad way, as if one of them were dying and this was their meeting together to say farewell. "Don't. You don't have to--- what I'm saying is, you got a part in the chorus. If you want it," he said. This was going to be a long farewell. He nodded slowly, walking closer to her, his hands still tucked safely inside his pockets. "Yes," he smiled, "she's my baby. My dream, really. And all it took was millions of people dying." He swollowed the lump in his throat that had formed. He was grateful, he really was, for this opportunity to make his dreams come true. But why was his dream coming true because of the war, why had he been giving this bitter opportunity? Life was one big, cruel joke. But he'd take in a stride. "So! We leave tonight at 9, train station in platform 3, and you'll be in cart 4." He went up and down on his toes once before taking a step back. "Well... I have to uh, get things ready for tonight. I suppose I'll see you." Oliver took another long look at her, although he said he had to leave, he wasn't moving anywhere. She had seemed desperate for a position in the musical. But how would she feel an hour from now when she's at home, packing up her belongings? Would she get cold feet? Would she doubt this? Maybe, and there was big possibility of this, she wouldn't show up tonight at all. WC: 385 TAG: Kira Collins

Kira hated the fact that things had to be like...this. Their conversation was awkward, uncomfortable, and basically acting like strangers despite spending four years of their lives together. But if she did speak out about the unspoken, how would things go? Would harsh feelings be brought up through Oliver, or Kira's lack of commitment? She was self conscious about her personality, knowing that she feared commitment and still did. She was almost thirty, she knew she couldn't play those games anymore. Despite that, she couldn't help it. She hated being locked into one place for the rest of her life. She craved adventure, and that's what this situation was going to be.
The red-haired girl nodded to Oliver. "Yeah, I would. Thank you," she said, smiling. She had gotten a part after all. But she wondered if it would all be in vein. Would there be someone better along the way to kick her out of her chorus spot? It was the bottom of a barrel, and they were only in District 2. What if she wasn't good enough, and in the end, she had to go back to the dreaded District 2? She knew she would have to eventually, but she didn't want to anytime soon. Exploring Panem was on her bucket list, and this would be her one opportunity to do so.
When Kira listened to Oliver, he talked about how this production was his dream at the cost of millions of people dying. It was sad but true. She understood exactly how that was though. She never would've gotten the modeling job of her life if it wasn't for the war. Some people benefited from the war while most suffered from it. "I'm really proud of you," she said to him. It was weird to say that, but it was true. She never thought she'd speak to any of her friends or ex lovers again, much less Oliver Bennett. In a way, she was jealous. But she didn't let that shine through. She was always extremely competitive, though she more kept it to herself than expressed it to other people.
"Wait--Oliver," she said to him. She didn't want him to go. Not yet. They both needed to do so much before they left tonight. But she couldn't help but not leave yet. "I just wanted to apologize for what happened before. It wasn't anything against you." She sighed. This was hard for her. "Everything was just too much for me back then. I never meant to hurt you though I know I did." She didn't say sorry though. Just like before. Sorry was a word that wasn't in her dictionary. But she really was sorry for what happened. Things could've turned out so differently. If she hadn't left back then, she didn't know what now would be like. Maybe she would've stayed in the Capitol. WORD COUNT: 483 TAG: Oliver A. Bennett

"Thank you," was all Oliver could say. It was somewhat of a stumble, getting to this point. He'd gotten unlucky and lucky at the same time. He hoped he would have a the skill and whatever it took to pull this whole thing off. He was already turning away when she spoke again. Oliver turned around, already knowing what was coming. He could read her face so clearly like they'd never been a day apart, like she'd never left him at all. They were so in sync with each other like that back in the day and now, it was like riding a bicycle. Oliver wanted to tell her to stop, to not even say anything. To just forget about all of it. But instead he remained quiet. And when she was done, he had so much to say to her. His mind was full of words ready to burst. But all at once, his mind cleared and his heart steadied. Oliver just gave her a small smile, and turned to walk away. He didn't say a word, he didn't even nod. He had nothing left to say. The past was the past and silence was all he had. Kira didn't know what to say when Oliver said practically nothing. It was uncomfortable. She hated the fact that he was silent while she was basically pouring her heart out with an apology that she didn't know she would ever have to make. It made her frustrated. Maybe now he thought he was better than her and only put her in chorus because of a past grudge. She would rather be in chorus, but when her mind started to think, she wondered if that was truly it. If he found someone better along the way, would he just dump her and put her back as a secretary in District 2? It was possible. She didn't know if Oliver could be that cruel. She didn't really know anymore since they hadn't talked in ages.
But she should be thankful for even getting a part. It saved her. People always mentioned her age, which made her extremely self-conscious despite her talent. She was fired from several jobs because she was getting older. She was no longer a fresh, new face to see. Instead, her age seemed to stand out in a crowd of early twenty-year-olds. Maybe that was how Oliver felt about her now. Just an older girl past her prime. Maybe he just felt bad for her.
"Nothing?" She said, almost unintentionally. She always said the wrong things at the wrong time. "So are we just going to play this like we don't know each other? Like we're complete strangers and I've never seen the great director Oliver Bennett before?" She was being over-dramatic, but what else was she suppose to do? They had history like nobody else in the cast did. How were they suppose to speak to each other or work together? It was a challenge she didn't know she could do unless things were cleared up. Letting go was something he wanted to do, it was something he needed to do. She had hurt him more than anyone else had ever hurt him in his life. His parents had always tried to keep him down, keep him in line, and they had hurt him. But heartache, specially when caused by a woman like Kira, was the worst of all. He'd spent years with her and all in one night, it was gone as if it never existed. But Kira wasn't like that. He should have known that she'd pull him back into until he drowned in the pain she'd caused all those years ago. His throat closed up and he tried to push down the anger, humiliation, and heartbreak. Oliver remained standing where he was, refusing to even look at her. "What do you want from me, Kira?" his voice came out strangled and low. It took all of him to not turn around and yell, releasing all the pent up rage he'd been working so hard to forget. Why? Why was she doing this to him? Wasn't it enough to break his heart the first time around? Did she have to dig a knife into the wound now too? She didn't just betray him. She humiliated him because when she left, he realized he'd been played for a fool. WC: 225 TAG: Kira Collins

Kira didn't know what was wrong with her. She knew she should've let the whole situation breeze over, but she couldn't do that. Was she still not over it? And if she wasn't, why was she the one that couldn't get over it? She was the one that hurt Oliver, not the other way around. After seeing him again, it was a rush of emotions that she should've been able to control but couldn't. Maybe it was that she wasn't important in his life anymore, and she figure she wouldn't be. Maybe it was jealousy that he was famous and she wasn't. But Kira was never the jealous type. In all honesty, she didn't know what came over her.
She looked at him, but he wouldn't look at her. She could tell he was mad. She should've shut up and let it go. He already had a lot more on his plate, and the last thing he needed was her giving him trouble for something that was her fault. She hated always being dramatic and complicated.
"I don't know, okay?" She said. It came out as sassy, but she didn't mean it to. "I just need some confirmation from you, I guess. Some acceptance to the fact that you don't hate me. But you probably do, and I don't blame you for it." Kira bit her lip. "That night was a mistake. Every night I regret that I did that. I know I hurt you and I know I was an awful partner to you. I wish I hadn't done what I did. I understand if you hate me, but the worst thing you can do is not talk to me about it." WORD COUNT: 287 TAG: Oliver A. Bennett NOTES: All the cheese!

Her words were cutting into his back like a hundred glass shards. This was the last thing he wanted to do and her words were the last things he wanted to hear. Life had always been so difficult for him. People had always wanted things from him, things he couldn't give them. And when he did, it always cut out pieces of him. Listening to her words was a struggle. When he was younger, he'd cover his ears and run away whenever people told him things he didn't want to hear. When he grew a little older, he was able to stand in front of them and tune them out. As an adult, their words stabbed into his armor-less chest. When he was finally able to turn to her, to look at her, he couldn't hold it in anymore. "What do you want to talk about? You want to talk about the fact that you walked out on me? Fine! You walked out on me. I trusted you, I told you everything! You were my best friend, Kira. And you left. You made me believe you, you told me you loved me. We promised that we'd stay by each others side. But I was an idiot for believing you, wasn't I? Because you filled me up with everything I needed and then one day you were gone and you took everything with you. You left me empty, with this gaping hole inside my chest that I couldn't fill. I couldn't sleep. I couldn't eat. Getting drunk and high only made me forget about you for a few hours and then when those wore off, I was back where I started. No. I was worse off than where I started. I loved you." He'd said it. He loved her. All those years of wondering if everything he'd been through was a lie or an illusion. All the layers that he'd buried on top of the pain just to make it stop. And now he knew, he did love her. He loved her more than anything. He couldn't stop looking at her, looking into those eyes he'd looked at a thousand times before. But now he couldn't see anything but the pain she'd caused him. "There. We've talked about it. Are you satisfied? Was it everything you imagined it would be?" His voice dripped with sarcastic hate like venom. He hadn't known those words had been inside him. He hadn't known that the feelings he had towards her were so vile. Everything he'd repressed was now laid out in the open. He hated himself and he wasn't sure who he hated more now, himself or her. When Oliver made eye contact with her, she knew she had opened up an old wound. He was angry, something that she hadn't seen in a long time. Kira listened to him, with every word piercing her chest like it was bullets. Things back then were so much simpler, but to Oliver, it was everything. She was his everything. She didn't realize how much hurt she had given him when she left. How was she suppose to know that she was the reason he felt awful? Her eyes welled up with tears. Every word he said was something new to her. She knew he loved her, but she had done something that she didn't know about. Kira never knew she had so much power over someone. How was she suppose to know?
When he was finished, Kira was left in shock and hurt. Tears fell down her cheeks. Today was suppose to be a good day. She was cast in a musical that was touring all around Panem. How could that be so bad? Seeing Oliver again made her happy. They were together, and she got to see him again. But it must have aroused different feelings in him. Something that had been oppressed since the day she walked out. She couldn't feel more bad.
She wiped a tear from her face. "You're right," she said. "I never meant..." Back then, everything was at the wrong place at the wrong time. She was young. The both of them were. Oliver was the only thing she had back then, before she got semi-famous. He was there when everything else was terrible. Kira didn't even remember why she walked out. She loved him, but it was all too much for her back then. Everything was moving too fast, including her relationship.
"But I did, didn't I?" She said, sighing. "It was never something I was proud of. It was too much back then, alright? I couldn't handle it. I cracked under pressure. I couldn't stand the fact that I was getting older and I was dragging you down with me! I ended up in District 2 for hell's sake. You wouldn't want this life after the life we lived in the Capitol. Back then, I was hurting you more than I was helping us. I'm a coward for doing what I did. But I never played you. That I won't apologize for, because I loved you too." Oliver's face twisted as he tried not to let any more of his emotions show. He'd already told her too much of how he felt and now he hated the both of them. There was noway to expunge the words he'd already said and the worst part was that he meant every piece of it. He didn't care now that it made him a bad person to hate her so much, she deserved it, didn't she? But as she spoke, her words sledge hammered into his wall, trying to break him. She was the reason he'd built up the wall in the first place. So that he could never get hurt again like the way she'd hurt him. So that he would stop thinking about her and lock memories of her away. "Drag me down with you?" Oliver shook his head in confusion. "Kira. We were both drowning!" The years he'd spent with her were some of the best of his life, but life was tough back then. Life as an artist, writer, actor, singer was tough because of the war. He was two years older than her, but he understood what age meant for women. It meant decay. But for a man, it wasn't as awful as that. For men, age meant experience and maturity. But for Oliver, it meant years of in-accomplishments. "You have no idea, do you? How much I thought you deserved better than me, how incompetent I felt all those years because I couldn't be better for the both of us. Because I was a failure," he had admitted it to himself already and now that he'd said it out loud, it felt more real. And then she left. And all his insecurities and doubts came true. He was, in every possible way, not good enough for her. It didn't matter why she left, not to him. Because he was selfish and he felt what he felt. He might have loved her then, but now, she was just a dagger on his already bleeding heart. "I can't do this, Kira. I can't." Oliver shook his head, pulling his arms close to him, pulling his entire body as close to his center as he possibly could, trying to hold it all in. He needed a drink. Christ almighty he needed a f*cking drink. WC: 388 TAG: Kira Collins

Kira should've never have come to the audition. She didn't know Oliver was the director, but she should've found out somehow. Once she saw him, she should've left. She knew this was going to happen. She was an idiot for not seeing it. She remembered a fight that was just like this one back when they were together. They were stressed that neither of them could pay the bills that they started fighting over who was at guilt. Neither of them had a job back then and they were both trying to make their dreams a reality. Most people thought the Capitol was a glamorous place where nobody had to work hard, but Kira and Oliver were both shining examples as to why that wasn't true. They worked their asses off to get to where they are--or were. Nothing was handed to either of them, and she assumed that was why they were both stubborn.
But when he said those things about him being a failure, it really hurt Kira. She even took a step back. She never thought of him as a failure. They both had their hard times, but Oliver truly thought he was a failure? The girl took a deep breath. "Why didn't you tell me this when we were together? I never thought you were a failure. I could've helped you." It was hard to say that, because from what she saw with the Oliver in front of her, she did nothing but hurt him. She honestly hated herself for what she did to him. She just hadn't saw the impact until today.
When she heard him speak that he couldn't do this right now, she nodded. "I know." The red-haired girl started to walk towards the door. She would have to pass Oliver, something she didn't want to do, but something that she had to do. "You'll find someone better than me for this musical. I can't cause you the extra stress that I know I'll cause. I shouldn't have come here. Hire that younger girl, number 4. She has a lot of potential." She was always told that you couldn't teach an old dog new tricks, and it was obvious that Kira wasn't going to change. If things were different, maybe this would've worked out. But it wasn't different. She couldn't change the past. Oliver was going to hold it against her no matter what. She couldn't deal with it and neither could she. Maybe it was best for her just to leave and become a secretary. WORD COUNT: 427 TAG: Oliver A. Bennett

He hadn't expected her response, or maybe he had. She had always been so good at bringing him over to her side. No matter how stubborn both of them were, somehow, she always managed it. He'd always been too soft of her before and it seemed none of that had changed. Shoulders slumped and body deflated, he feet completely and utterly defeated. He shrugged and shook his head, "I don't know, Kira. Maybe the same reasons you didn't tell me. It doesn't matter. It's done, we can't undo it." If only they had talked about this years ago, maybe they could have prevented it, maybe she would have stayed. But they didn't, and it was too late now. It was odd, her understanding how he felt, that he needed space and time and just to not do this anymore. It was like a merry go around that just wouldn't stop, and he so badly wanted to jump off. And then her next words caused him to freeze and panic. His hand stretched out to grab her arm. He didn't even have to look at how to move, his body moved with ease, knowing each of their measurements and movements as if he'd had everything about them memorized. He knew what the distances of their bodies meant, whether they were a foot from each other or only inches. He knew exactly how tall she was in comparison to his height, whether she was barefoot or in six inch heels. He knew how and where to reach any part of her body. Just like he knew it was when he saw that red hair. He would have known it was her if he only saw a shadow of her face. Or the silhouette of her figure. "Don't," he said in just above a whisper. As much as he couldn't do this with her, he couldn't do THIS, the play, without her. She had to be in the play, whatever small role she played, she had to be in it. Now that he'd seen her, now that he'd spoken to her, the play wouldn't be complete without her. "I need you. Please," his voice cracked as he pleaded. WC: 366 TAG: Kira Collins
