Nydia Estelle Caden
NICKNAMES: Nyd, Underfoot AGE: 8 GENDER: Female RESIDENCE: District 9 OCCUPATION: N/A SPECIAL INFO: N/A FACE CLAIM: Mackenzie Foy PLAYER ALIAS: Rebecca
Personality Even though she has lived only in a time of war, Nydia is an overly curious and bubbly child. She is not afraid to talk to anyone, go anywhere, or do anything. Most people find her incredibly charming and sweet, and as a result often over-indulge her. A lot of her fearlessness comes from her mother, who was willing to try nearly anything once. Myreen tried to instill discipline and caution in her daughter though, but the concepts didn't completely take. She often gets into trouble.
Nydia is also very smart with an incredible memory. That, although she doesn't know it, comes from her father. She only needs to be told how to do something once and she'll remember it, though that doesn't necessarily mean that she'll actually do it. She remembers things about people, which makes it easy for her to get along with almost anyone because she can keep track of their personalities and quirks. That also makes it easy for her to mess with them or get things if she wants. She also has an insatiable curiosity, and so is easily distracted by new things or questions. She has the ability to focus, though not often the desire.
If you ask Nydia what she wants to be when she's older, her answer will change day to day. One day she'll say she wants to be a teacher and the next a pilot. Mostly, she's an inventor at heart. She loves finding out how things work and creating things with her own two hands.
History Mother: Myreen Caden, deceased Father: Vinny Raixes, presumed deceased
Nydia's mother, Myreen Caden, was a weapon's tester and part time creator for District 13. She worked specifically with hand-held weapons, including guns, bows and sharp-edged weapons. About nine years ago, Myreen became temporarily close with Vinny Raixes, an intelligent if unstable man. He had spent time in the lab reprogramming some of their testers, and the proximity for several days led to talking and... to much more than that. A few months later, Myreen found herself pregnant, and having slept with no one else, knew that Vinny was the father. She held off telling him until near the time Nydia was due, also telling him that she didn't want him to have anything to do with her baby. She viewed Vinny as too much of a child himself to be much good at raising one.
Nydia Estelle Caden was born healthy and happy. She grew up not knowing who her father was, because with as curious as the child was, Myreen worried about her daughter spending time with her father. As soon as she could walk, Nydia was forever wandering off, her curiosity about the world around her making it hard for her to stay in one place. Myreen often had to leash the child to avoid losing her.
A little before Nydia's sixth birthday, there was an accident in the the weapon testing facility. They had created a new arrow infused with an acid made to eat through metal, specifically, but with potentially wider uses. One of the newer testers was messing with it, and the arrow accidentally shot off straight into Myreen's upper leg. She was rushed to the medical ward, but the acid ate through flesh as easily as it might have eaten through metal. As much as the doctors tried to stop it, there was nothing they could do and Myreen died within an hour. Nydia was pulled out of classes only after her mother had died, and was temporarily moved in housing to reside with other children without parents.
For a while, Nydia lived in District 13's orphanage. When she was seven, there was a brutal attack from the Capitol. Panic was everywhere, and the two ladies that ran the orphanage were ushering all the kids onto a large armored tank. One of the ladies, Miss Remis, was ushering some of the last kids onto the tank when there were gunshots and she suddenly fell. The tank exploded with screams of panic and pulled away, leaving some of the children - and the now lifeless Miss Remis - behind.
The tank drove on for what felt like days. Aside from orphanage children, there were a few other families on the tank as well. Everyone was scared, but especially the youngest children. Nydia spent her time going to different young ones and telling them stories, or talking about her inventions, or just hugging them. Finally, the tank stopped and everyone was told to get off. The place Nydia stepped into was unfamiliar. It was partially destroyed like her home was, but it was nothing like her home. There were fewer buildings, more open space. Some people welcome the newcomers, and most of the children were herded away into a small brick building. The building, Nydia would come to know, was the makeshift orphanage for District 9. Now, a little over a year later, that is still where she lives.
