Bear A. Houston
NICKNAMES: Bear AGE: 17 GENDER: Male RESIDENCE: District 10 OCCUPATION: Rancher SPECIAL INFO: HG Tribute FACE CLAIM: Jack Reynor PLAYER ALIAS: Eileen ❤
Bear was so named because on the night he was born, his mother had dreamed about it. She said that a great bear walked up to her, touched her foot, and then fell over dead. It was odd that his mother would name him this, but she had an odd way of thinking. Or so his father told him. His mother died right after naming him. She gave birth to him on the living room floor and died on that same floor.
His father hardly talked to him. He answered with grunts and nods. When he did speak, it was like he couldn't look at Bear. One night, in drunken stupor, he said that Bear should have died, not Laureen. Whether or not his father remembered saying those words, it didn't matter. Bear had known how his father felt about him long before then.
The war didn't really affect them. Bear was only 5 then and he didn't know anything. He hadn't started school yet, but there would be no school. Not until last year. He didn't know math or how to read like grown ups did. What he did know was how to milk cows, herd cattle, ride horses and things like that. The Capitol had held their ranch hostage during the war, but they were still told to keep doing work in order to support The Capitol's cause. They weren't allowed to harbor Rebels, so they didn't. While the entire District was ravaged by famine and death, the Houston family was safe in their ranch miles away from the rest of the District. Rebels tried to get to their ranch before, so did people from the District, but the Peacekeepers were always one step ahead of them. It also helped that his father did everything the Peacekeepers told him.
Bear had no control over his mother's death, his father's choices, or anything that would happen in his life. But with each day, he made it through to the night. It was in the night that he was at rest, if only for a few hours. In the night, he dreamed of another life, a better life.
