Linna knew she was home. Even though she had been in her childhood home for the past year, it had never felt right. This place, this train that took her away from District 6 - it felt right. She felt right, for the first time since she'd been forced to leave District 2.
Darkness had fallen in District 7, and she knew that come morning, this train would be leaving for the next district. Auditions had already been held here, and new cast members chosen. For now, as Linna walked along behind the still train, everything was perfect and silent. She ran her fingers along the metal, a surprisingly smooth feel when she'd been far more used to seeing things half-destroyed and covered with holes or scratches. She took in a deep breath of the earthy smell around her, so incredibly different from anything she'd breathed in Districts 2 or 6. Some of the other members of the cast and crew had gone into town tonight, to celebrate or mingle with the local people. Not her, though. On this, her first night in a new place in this new home she felt inside, she'd stayed behind to take it all in.
"I didn't figure you'd stay here long," Jessa had said with a small smile after Linna came home from the audition. She'd said this even before Linna had told her, before she could have known, and Linna had been surprised at the insight of her little sister. But then, Jessa wasn't so little anymore, and she'd stayed behind in District 6 while Linna was gone. She knew things, had probably seen things, that Linna couldn't imagine. "I'm sorry," Linna had said, but her sister just shook her head. "It's who you are."
Her siblings had given her gifts that night to see her off, and one of the things Jessa had given her was now clutched in Linna's right hand. It was a bottle of rum left over from her parents' stash. There was precious few left of things like that, or of them, so this bottle was special. Perhaps she should have saved it for some extra-special night - maybe after their first performance, or after her first review. But tonight felt special enough. She had missed the chance to honor her parents at their funeral or during their last few years, so it felt like it was better the sooner she started.
With the bottle in hand, Linna started to climb one of the ladders on the side of the train that led to the top. Her blonde hair and brown dress fluttered in the wind, the latter of which probably would have shown off quite a bit to anyone standing below, but she didn't care. She made it to the top mostly using just one hand to climb and turned to sit on top of the car. She couldn't see anything but forest and midnight blue sky all around her, and there was something wonderful in that. She smiled and unscrewed the top off the bottle. She took a sip and cringed a little at the strong stuff, but it felt warm all the same going down and seemed to sink down all the way to her toes. She closed her eyes as if to feel it better, and that's when she heard the ladder squeak and move beside her. Opening her eyes, Linna looked down to find someone climbing up to join her. She didn't mind the intrusion one bit.
"I thought the whole party had moved into town," she said, scooting over a little to make room for the newcomer. Then, she offered her bottle. "Share a drink with me?"

During Linna Rail’s audition, Oliver and Alec agreed entirely about her place in the musical. She was beautiful and talented and eager - a great fit for the role she was to play. There was hardly even a discussion. What else was there to say? Linna was the lead female of their dreams. Further discussion followed, talking about more than just her artistic talent. Linna was very beautiful in something of an angelic way - in Oliver’s eyes, it was that disposition that made her perfect for the part. Alec wanted to take a longer look and see what was beneath that innocent and beautiful exterior. She’d only been recruited one District ago. Since then, Alec wanted to speak to her, not as her choreographer, but as a person. It wasn’t particularly hard. The crew, drunk on the idea of freedom and the cheap booze in the train, wandered off into town to become even more intoxicated. Alec considered going until he noticed one missing: Linna. His time, he decided, would be more valuable if spent socializing with her individually. Almost as soon as he formed that goal, it was easy to find her. Alec stepped off the train just as he saw her clearing the top of the train from her place on the ladder. The edge of the sight he caught was enough to make him grin to himself. He shook that off, though, for favor of scaling the ladder himself. He reach the top quickly, not liking the odds of hanging off the side of a train, even if it was sitting still on the tracks. Alec dropped down onto the roof beside her, smiling at her acknowledgement. ”Well, it pretty much has,” Alec said, laughing a little. He accepted the bottle, taking a short swig. The taste made him shake his head. It was some of the most bitter stuff he’d ever tasted. ”My God, you must be drinking to forget with stuff this strong.” He laughed harder this time. ”Linna Rails, do you know that we all have value on our heads? The Capitol assigned us prices, apparently, of roughly how much it would cost to replace us. I don’t remember any numbers, but I’m pretty sure that as the Lead Female, yours is high enough that it would send management into hysterics if they knew you were drinking on top of a train at night.”Words: 429 Tags: Linna Rails

Linna smiled at the sight of the choreographer, Alec, coming to join her up atop the train. She only really knew enough about the cast and crew of the musical to know their names and what they were, so she essentially knew nothing about him. He, on the other hand, knew a great deal about her. She felt like you couldn't watch someone perform, at least not someone like herself, and not know a bit part of them. She could act, but she also was what she was acting, singing, or dancing. After the whole cast was assembled, she'd probably know Alec pretty well just in being trained his choreography. Until then though, she'd have to get to know him the old-fashioned way - and she wanted to. She watched as Alec took a sip from the bottle, laughing lightly when his reaction wasn't so different from her own. "I'm celebrating," she protested, although people who were celebrating probably drank lighter stuff. Champagne, maybe, or wine - something that was delicious and sweet. But the rum was sweet for an entirely different reason, at least to her, and it was grounded. It didn't mess around, masking the flavor of the alcohol that was its main purpose in existing. It was more real than the stuff she could have been drinking, and she felt like she needed that in the midst of this new and exciting journey. She might have tried to explain it to Alec, but it would have required more explaining than he probably cared to hear. She doubted he'd climbed up on a train to talk about things like that, or her past. Linna raised her eyebrows as Alec told her that they all had prices. Really? Actual numbered prices? She was curious as to what hers might be, but on the other hand, maybe it was good not to know. Any number wouldn't feel quite right. She smiled, taking the bottle back from him. "Well, then I guess we shouldn't tell them," she replied before taking another drink - and shaking out the taste a bit after. She set the bottle between them and looked at Alec. "Besides, what about you? Your price has to be at least double mine. Your kind of skills are a bit harder to replace than a pretty face." She was downplaying herself, she knew, but he'd either accept the compliment or deny how small her involvement was - and that would say something. "Why aren't you in town with the rest of them anyway?" WC: 417 Tag: Alec Penber

Alec smiled easily, enjoying the dynamic ensuing between himself and Linna. For the lead role, she was surprisingly kind and down to Earth. In Alec’s (limited) experience, those who were good at their art tended to be acutely aware of it and made it continually known. She was different. Linna was one of the cast members that Alec would drink with again on top of a train in the middle of the night. ”Celebrating?” Alec repeated, ”What are you celebrating tonight?” He smiled again, laughing along with her. Most of the people, especially those from the Districts who were far less familiar with alcohol than those from the Capitol, would generally only celebrate on something lighter. Alec wouldn’t argue with her, though. He was perfectly fine celebrating whatever with rum. ”Don’t worry. If I told management about everything - or, actually anything - that has happened so far, they’d be so upset that they’d probably just burn their office down or something.” Alec laughed a bit at the image. He smiled as Linna touched on the prices. It was truly a strange, almost dehumanizing concept, but absolutely characteristic of the Capitol. Everything was about money for them. ’What, is that to say that my face isn’t pretty?” Alec laughed again, looking over at Linna this time. ”I’ll let that one side,” he said, joking heavily, ”but in all seriousness, you’d be very surprised. While I assume my number is one I’d love to have in my pocket, yours is by no means something to scoff at. You’re the most visible member of the cast - the face of the whole musical, really. That’s very valuable.”Pretty faces weren’t meaningless, after all. Linna wasn’t just a pretty face, though. She also had a beautiful, pure voice, and great dancing skills. Linna was the perfect fit for the role and nearly irreplaceable, at least in Alec’s opinion. Alec looked at her again at her next question. ”Town gets old after a while,” he explained. He was used to wide and sprawling plains. Sometimes, the city lights and sounds became too much, and he just wanted some quiet time. ”What about you? What’s your alibi?”Words: 389 Tags: Linna Rails

What was she celebrating? "Everything," Linna replied, opening her arms to the night around them. "Freedom. Being away from all the things in life that don't make sense and being a part of something I'm going to love. I'm celebrating this train and this musical and me and you." She laughed a little, knowing how ridiculous it sounded. But it really felt like for the first time in a year, she had a place to call home again. And maybe this would be the first time in her life, this home wouldn't be tainted by grabby Peacekeepers or the politics of war. Maybe this time, home would just be somewhere she could be safe and be herself. Linna laughed at the image of management burning everything down in frustration. "I guess that doesn't surprise me with a musical like this," she returned, laughing. She knew how performer troops were, or at least how hers had been, and sometimes secrets were necessary. As he went on, she shook her head, holding up her hands in innocence. "I never said that!" she protested, but laughed along with him. He was truthfully quite nice to look at, even here in the near dark. Physical was a common trait among the musical cast and crew, though that wasn't surprising. No one in Panem wanted to watch an ugly cast, and ugly choreographers probably didn't get so far in life either. "The face of the whole musical?" she repeated. "Well, no pressure, right?" Linna knew what it meant to get cast in the lead female role, but that still didn't feel entirely real. They hadn't really gotten around to rehearsals yet, and she wasn't sure it would feel real until then. She liked the prospect of the spotlight, but it was still hard to believe that she was that valuable to this project. At his next question, she took another drink before responding, giving it some thought. Initially, she'd thought she'd separated from the main group because of the overwhelmning newness of this place and this journey, but that wasn't really it. Once she'd been sitting on top of the train, looking out over the trees, she'd known she'd made the right choice. "Towns are just towns, and if you've seen one bar I feel like you've seen them all," she responded, setting the bottle down again. "I've spent lots of times in bars or towns, but surrounded by trees and night air with a solid metal train beneath me? I've never had that. You've probably already gotten to see all of Panem, and I guess I will eventually, but this place is nothing like Two or Six. It's a whole new experience, and I don't want to miss anything." Alec truly felt Linna’s answer to his question. With the musical, life had become something incredibly different. His life was permanently changed now that he had tasted this. Now, he existed amongst incredibly talented and spirited people and with them, each day felt like a story for the books. ”Yeah,” Alec agreed with a laugh, ”I’d drink to that. When you put it like that, there sure is a lot to celebrate.” It was hard not to be stupidly emotional and grateful for the musical. Alec was actually living out his dreams, after all. He liked that he could joke with her easily like this. In actuality, the warm alcohol in his veins took the difficulty out of the situation. He couldn’t attribute his success in socialization with Linna to his charms alone. He bit his lip a bit at her comment, trying to decide how to respond. Despite being tipsy and joking lightheartedly, he felt that he had to convey an important sentiment. Still, he didn’t want to bring down the mood to that level. He tried to find a good middle ground, saying, ”Actually, yes - believe it or not. No pressure. It makes people crack and break down. It’s better for everyone involved to have fun doing what they’re doing.” Prior to his audition, Alec was incredibly nervous about how to present himself to Oliver. How could he describe his creative visions? What arrangement should he perform to best showcase his ability? Alec worried about every small detail for the weeks leading up to his time. When it came, though, Alec let it all fade away, just for a moment. In its place, he found himself having fun and appreciating the art that he was creating with his body. He believed that the mindset of his audition was what landed him the job and made him the better choreographer and dancer. Alec could only hope that the same would happen for Linna. Alec took a swig after Linna, listening to her point of view. He laughed. ”Are you joking? I haven’t seen anything yet.” He leaned back on the roof, putting a hand behind him for support as he gazed up into the dark sky. ”I’m detail oriented. Well, that’s stupidly obvious, or I wouldn’t be a choreographer. But I mean really detail oriented. Every place is different, even if just by a little bit. I don’t want to miss any of it either” he admitted. ”What did you do in 6?” he asked, curious as to what she was used to seeing. Words: 442 Tags: Linna Rails

Linna smiled as Alec agreed to her reasons to celebrate. Tonight, there really was so much to celebrate. This bubbly, excited feeling inside of her might not last through all the grueling rehearsals and struggling to create family with the cast, so she wanted to take advantage of it as much as she could now. If there was one thing she'd learned from all her time in Two, it was that both the good and bad could pass quickly, so you had to make the most of what you had. "That won't be a problem for me," Linna responded with a slight shake of her head, hoping that it was as true as she felt at that moment. "I was born to do what I do, and I love it. I'll admit this show is a bit different, but I can't wait to be on stage." She was more used to being part of the ensemble, but in a way that was far different from a play. Often, she was the star for a handful of minutes, and then it would switch to the next person. Occasionally, she was part of duets or trios, the occasional acting scene, but it would be far different than this musical. This musical would span the course of several hours, and she'd be the focus for more than just a few minutes. Would the pressure of that get to her? She tried to keep that question inside her own mind and off of her face. Linna had simply assumed that Alec had already toured Panem. She had assumed that he and Oliver had come from the Capitol, that the opportunities afforded to them would have allowed them to basically go where they wished. She wanted to ask about that when he said he hadn't seen anything yet, but held off. It was nicer listening to what he did say, anyway. They were on the same page right now, and it was such a wonderful feeling to find someone like that again. Everyone back in Six seemed to not only be on a different page, but in an entirely different book. She couldn't totally blame them; her siblings and the rest of the district had seen a part of war that she had been shielded from. They'd been attacked there, fought there, and struggled to survive. She hadn't been starving or running from guns, and the guilt that came with that against everyone else made it hard to connect. But here, regardless of how involved Alec had been in the war, they had much more common ground. Linna shrugged at his question, toying with the bottle in her hands. "I did what anyone does in Six," she began, watching the liquid turn. "I worked in the trainyards and tried to fit in." She took a quick drink and set the bottle beside her again, resolving to maybe slow it down a bit. She could feel her brain starting to get fuzzy in that wonderful way it did, and she lay back against the cool metal of the train car. "I spent most of the war in Two though, doing this kind of stuff. Performing. Sometimes it was perfect, when the audience wasn't trying to take advantage of the performers." She twirled a strand of blonde hair around her finger, silent for a moment before turning her head to look at Alec again. "Who were you before this show?" WC: 573 Tag: Alec Penber
