It had been a month since the incident. Eli had decided not to get the job back at the bar, there were too many things going on and working would just make everything he had to do harder. During that time, he'd hired the doctor as his personal doctor for Lia, himself, and Emilia. The doctor turned out to be very understanding and trustworthy, and he paid her well for her discretion. Their days had become predictable and routine. In the morning, Eli and Emilia would cook breakfast at Lia's place and take turns feeding Lia. At first it had only been him, but after only a week, Emilia insisted she come. Eli hadn't wanted to bring her, this was no place to bring a child, specially in Lia's condition. But as Lia hadn't gotten any better, he wondered if Emilia's presence would In the afternoon, they would leave for a few hours and Levi would take care of her. In the evenings, Emilia and Eli would come back, that's when the doctor came to check up on Lia to make sure everything was still physically okay with her. Then they would all, including Levi, have dinner. On some nights, Eli wouldn't have dinner with them and instead go elsewhere for a few hours, then he'd come back and get Emilia and go home for the night. Some nights, Emilia and Eli would stay over and sleep in the living room. But those nights were rare and only happened when Emilia would fight with Eli about not wanting to leave Lia alone. It was an odd routine, one he couldn't really explain to other people if they asked. But he'd come to accept it as Lia's progress had been painfully slow. During this time, he was thankful for The Capitol's money because it allowed him to have enough to take care of Lia and still live comfortably for the rest of his life, however long that may be. In just one month, he'd added more people in his life. Lia, Aria, the Doctor, and Levi. He felt himself trying to juggle his life and feared that one day, he wouldn't be able to keep doing everything and one of these things or people would fall from him. Eli placed the dishes in the dishwasher after breakfast. Today was grocery day and he usually waited for Levi to come before he left. When he finished, he walked to the bedroom and sat on the chair by the bed. "Lia, I'm going to the market, is there something you want me to get?" he asked, it was the same thing he always asked. "Levi will be here soon. He said he wants spaghetti for dinner." It had been hard trying to get her to talk and have full on conversations. Sometimes he felt as if he were walking on eggshells, never knowing what was going to happen or how she was going to react to something. And most nights, he had trouble sleeping. In the mornings he'd wake up with aches and pains he'd never had before, his muscles stiff and sore from stress. WC: 526 TAG: Jezelia Lennox / Levi Nors

Everything was a blur, like a dream with no focus. Lia would be awake but she wouldn't see anything. People would talk but she wouldn't hear anything. Then things would go dark and then everything would become like a dream again. That was how it was for her, everyday, in and out. This day was like that too. She was distant, trapped inside her own head. Emilia entered the room and sat down on the bed next to Lia. Lia couldn't see or hear her. She was just staring at the wall, like she did everyday. Dreaded memories were on repeat in her head and whatever brain activity she had was set on those memories. It was as if she was there, actually living in that moment. The talking, the fire, the screaming, she could hear it and feel it. "I want to play hopscotch."Everything froze for a moment. It was like a tv who froze, whose screen would shake and then reset. Lia stopped. She was looking at Davina. Her sister was dead and she knew that she hadn't heard her say those words. But it had been her favorite game to play. The destruction around Lia was nothing but death and pain. No one in their right mind would say such a thing. "Please? Can I do it in the living room then?"It happened again. Everything froze up around Lia. It was eerie and it scared her. Other than the pain and the aching and every inch of her body wanting to scream, she began to feel scared. Scared because something was not adding up. The people screaming around her, their screams began to fade. She could see them scream but she couldn't hear their screams anymore. Her eyes were wide as she watched the destruction around her slowly fade away. It didn't make any sense. Their faces, the bodies, the fire and the screaming... It was fading away. The scenery around her changed. She was sitting in a bed and there was a girl and a man there. Lia blinked, her gaze shifting between the man and the girl. What happened to the street and how did she get her? Her heart began to race and she was beyond terrified right now. She wanted to move, to get out of the bed but she couldn't move. Her body wouldn't respond. That was until she managed to raise her arm, trying to pull away the blanket. She had to get away. Her eyes were wide and the look of horror on her face was striking. BOOM. A loud noise shot through the silence. A gunshot. Lia couldn't tell from where it came. Her panic only intensified until bits and pieces of a memory began to resurface. Her heart rate began to slow down. She'd held a gun. Pointed it at herself. She'd felt her heart break. Tears began to stream down her cheeks as everything she'd ever been through came back to her. She knew where she was. This was her home. It had been her home for three years. She knew who they were now though it made no sense to her as to why they were there. Lia opened her mouth to talk but it was too dry for her to get a word out. Instead she just found herself looking at Eli and Emilia, her eyes asking a million questions when her own voice couldn't.

Eli was about to say something else when Emilia came in the room asking about hopscotch. He shrugged, "you can't go outside Emilia. Stay inside, I'm about to go to the market." Emilia rarely ever got bored and since moving to District 1, he stressed the importance of being invisible, like she didn't exist. It wasn't difficult for her to understand why and abide by his rules. He knew that she was different from other children. Most children would rebel or not understand, but Emilia did. She rarely ever got bored when she was by herself or cooped up in the house all day. "Please? Can I do it in the living room then?"Eli sighed, he had to give her something. She was always so good it wasn't fair for him to keep telling her no all the time. "Okay fine, but be light on your feet. We don't want the neighbors downstairs to complain," he said and stopped when he saw Emilia's face. Her face was turning pale and her mouth opened, her hand rising up to point at Lia. Eli turned to Lia and saw that something had changed. She was crying and trying to say something. "Lia? Lia..." he breathed and moved closer to her. "Lia, I'm here," he took her hand in his. Was this it? Had she finally broken through whatever hold she was in? WC: 232 TAG: Jezelia Lennox

Lia stared at them. She remembered what had happened. She remembered exposing herself, telling him that she loved him and that it terrified her. She remembered him leaving. But everything after that was blank. The sound of a gunshot was also there but other than that she couldn't fill the gap inside her mind. Why was he back and why was Emilia there? Her gaze went to her hand in his. She pulled it back, shock still visible on her face. Lia had never been as confused as she was now. She reached for the glass of water, chugging down half of it. She was parched she realized, as soon as she tasted the first drop of water. She stopped moving all of a sudden, looking down on her body. Where was the brace? And why didn't she feel any pain in her arm and leg? "What's going on?" Her voice was hoarse, barely to be heard. Something was wrong, she could sense it. If it wasn't for the fact that she needed Elias to tell her what it was, the last thing she wanted was to see him there. She hated him for leaving her. But if he had left her then why was he here? It didn't make any sense to her, no matter how hard she tried to wrap her head around it. She hated him and she loved him and it hurt to see him there. She could still feel his hand on hers and that made her all the more angry.

When Lia pulled her arm away, Eli's heart fell. He was hurt that she'd pull away from him, after all the things he'd done for her. But perhaps he deserved it for everything he'd done to her. It was like this cycle of pain that they did to each other. Who could hurt who the most? Who could take the pain to the next level? Eli watched her reach for the glass of water and drink it as if she hadn't drank anything in ages. For the most part, Lia ate and drank when they fed her and put water to her mouth. She got up to go to the bathroom when she needed to. Other than that, she laid in bed. Eli had assumed that she was coherent and knew everything that was going on around her, it was simply by the choice that she didn't. His brows furrowed at her question, "I was asking if there was something you needed from the market?" It was the first time she'd said anything, she'd responded to anything. And from the way she acted, it seemed to be the first time she heard them talking or knew that they were even there to begin with. "Do you not remember anything?" he asked. This was probably the right question, or at least a better one. If Lia was here, but wasn't here, then where had she been? WC: 236 TAG: Jezelia Lennox

Lia stared at him, her brows furrowed. "Why?" She grimaced. Every time she spoke, her throat hurt and burned even more. She drank some more water before looking back at Eli. "I do my own grocery shopping", she told him, regretting it the moment she finished her sentence. Her hand went to her throat, rubbing at it. Why was it hurting so much? His next question left her even more puzzled. What did he even mean? "I remember you leaving." That was the last thing she remembered, her telling him everything and him just not caring. Him leaving her there, on her own, despite how hard it had been for her to tell him everything. She wanted to tell him to leave but the feeling that something wasn't quite right was still there. If it weren't for Emilia being there, everything would be different. Lia was fairly sure that her voice would be a lot angrier and so would her approach. Instead she found herself smiling. "Hey Em." She turned her attention to the little girl that was too sweet and innocent for this world. Before any of them could say anything, Lia pulled out one of the drawers next to the bed and grabbed the book that she always kept next to her. It had been Davina's favorite. "I've been thinking about giving you this", Lia told her and had to take a break, to drink some more water. It eased the burning sensation but didn't take it away completely. She handed it to Emilia and the smile on her face made the unsettling feeling inside Lia disappear for a moment. Emilia's smile was infectious and it spread to Lia's face as well. "Thank you!" Emilia was quick to grab the book and leave for the living room, having the first page opened already. Lia's gaze followed her with a smile until she was out of sight. Her smile faded when she turned to Elias. First she needed more water, but when she tried to move her body felt slow, as if she hadn't used it for a long time. She did however manage to get herself to sit up with her legs hanging over the bed. Standing on them showed to be a completely different matter. Her legs caved in immediately and if it weren't for Eli's quick reaction, she would've hit the floor. Now that her body was pressed to his, she realized that she would've preferred the floor than to feel his body. Her heart skipped a beat and before she felt the stupid urge to kiss him, despite his jackass behavior, she pulled back and sat down on the bed. "What's going on?" she asked again. The last thing she remembered was him leaving and her crying and sobbing. She couldn't remember anything after that. She figured that she'd fallen asleep but that didn't explain the sound of a gunshot, a sound that she's never heard before or why Eli was here. It also didn't explain why her body didn't feel like her own and why her mind felt like it had been scrambled. Her thoughts were clear but her memories weren't. There was a fog and she didn't know why or how it was there.

Eli watched her, studying her words and her behavior. She clearly knew that something was wrong, but it seemed to Eli that perhaps she didn't know that she'd been basically out of it for a month. It was like taking care of a person in a coma, except she was able to eat and drink and do whatever necessary things she had to do. Eli wondered if he should tell her. How could he tell her. Maybe he should call the doctor, he nodded as if to himself and then looked up at her. He looked at Emilia, "Can you give us a few minutes please?" She looked at him and frowned, but did as she was told. Eli walked closer to Lia. "It's difficult to explain, I don't think I really understand it myself. Maybe I should call the doctor to come explain it to you?" Eli didn't want to say the wrong things, didn't want to say something awful or bad that would send her back to whatever she'd just pulled through from. He watched her worriedly like if he took his eyes for her for even a second, she'd disappear or melt into a puddle. WC: 200 TAG: Jezelia Lennox

Lia stared at Elias. "Doctor?" She shook her head, feeling herself get more frustrated with every second that went by. "Just tell me what's going on. Why are you here? You straight up lied to me, left me and now you're here. I want to know why." Lia began to cough violently after that, but she refused to get any help from him. If she so had to crawl to the bathroom to get water, she'd do just that. The last thing she wanted was to feel his hands on her body, not when she couldn't have him. Jezelia made an attempt to stand up for the second time, determined to make it on her own. She made it a couple of steps. They were wobbly and she could feel how weak she was, but she didn't care. She was good on her own and didn't need his help. But per usual, Lia's stubborness and pride always got the best of her. She fell to the floor on her sixth step. She was grimacing, because of the pain as well as the humiliation. She hated this. Hated that he was here and that the universe was playing some twisted, sick joke by wanting her to depend on him. "Don't. Touch. Me", Lia spoke through gritted teeth. Of course he'd try to help her. Didn't he know much it hurt? Slapping away the tears that began to trickle down her face, Lia finally decided to look up at Eli. "You're not thick are you? Or is it a game that you're playing with me? Just tell me, please." She looked at him, a crease between her brows. Lia had given up on playing it nice because she'd already tried that once. She'd tried and failed so what else was left for her to choose from? The fact that she was on the floor and in pain also made it easier to be angry than to be nice and there was still the part that wondered what the hell had happened. Just yesterday he'd left her crying and now he was here, wanting to help her. So what had changed?

Eli stepped back, very unsure of what he should say. What he shouldn’t say. How he should say it. He wasn’t a doctor or a psychologist. He was a soldier. A killer. A mercenary. The complete opposite of who and what she needed. When she tried to walk, it pained him to watch, he wanted to go to her, to help her. But she seemed adamant, completely persistent on doing things her own and her way. Dammit, why was she so stubborn. When she fell, he moved forward to help but she refused him. Her anger lashing out at him like a whip. He turned around, away from her, his hands up. “Fine. Fine, I won’t f*cking help you,” Eli said in anger. He could feel her frustration, the anger burning inside her, the betrayal that she had felt was last month for him but still fresh for her. Because to her, it had just happened minutes ago. What he should have done, what he knew was best to do, was to take her anger and smother it. Provide her with something she needed. But he had no idea what that was. Because he was trying. He was trying so f*cking hard to just understand her, but it was like they were speaking two different languages and no matter how hard either of them tried it just wasn't going to work. And this entire month of taking care of her and being there for her was for nothing. Absof*ckinglutely nothing because she had no idea. She had no idea exactly what he’d done for her. How his life had completely turned because of her and how he had changed all of that to take care of her. But it didn’t matter. Not to her. Because they were in two different timelines speaking two different languages seeing two different things. Eli turned and shrugged, “well if you think I’m so stupid, maybe I’m too stupid to explain it to you. So how about I let Levi explain it. He’ll be here in a few minutes. I’m leaving.” Eli grabbed his coat from the chair and put it on, walking out the door. “Be back later,” he told Emilia as he crossed the living room and walked out of the apartment. Once he closed the door behind him, he punched the wall, his fist going straight through it. His hand was stuck inside and he had to force it out of the wall. When he finally got it out, his hands was bleeding, but he didn’t care. Eli rushed down the stairs, running into Levi as he walked in. “Oh. Good timing. She’s awake. Told her you’d explain everything. Going to the market, see ya,” Eli said before sliding out the door and into the streets. WC: 477 TAG: Jezelia Lennox / Levi Nors

Lia's jaw dropped, if not from confusion then from surprise. Despite everything that she was feeling, she couldn't help but chuckle. "Wow. Just wow", She shook her to herself, wiping away her tears with a more gentle touch this time. When he decided to storm out, she didn't even bother to ask him to stay. He was like some sort of toy, with an on and off switch and when he was angry, well, the man didn't really seem to be able to think at all. She was fairly sure that she behaved the same way most of the time but there was still the sense of pride in her that made her think that she was better at handling such situations than he was. Emilia entered the room, the book in her hands. "Lia?" she asked carefully. Jezelia's brows rose as she looked up at Emilia from where she was sitting. "Yeah?" Turned out that Emilia just wanted to have someone to read with. Lia didn't have it in her to say no, even though it was the first time in years that she opened that book. It had always been hers and Davina's thing to do and she would've wanted to keep it that way, if it weren't for the big, round eyes that looked at her pleadingly. Lia ended up sighing and motioned for Emilia to come and sit next to her on the floor. "Em? What happened? And why are you guys here?" Lia put down the book in her lap. She couldn't stop thinking about it, because something was wrong. She could feel it and just because she'd been able to ignore it for a little while didn't mean that the feeling wasn't still there. For the second time that day, Lia's mouth dropped. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. How was it even possible for a month to have passed? And for her to have been awake and not know that they were there until now? And how was it that she didn't remember anything from the past month? The moment she thought it, slivers of her past memories appeared. Lia jolted, her heart beginning to race. Emilia must have sensed the change in her. She immediately wrapped her arms around her. "Please don't go", she begged. Lia blinked before shaking her head. "I won't go anywhere. I'm right here." Lia embraced her back, resting her chin on Emilia's head. "Thank you Em." Lia was talking and hearing Emilia, but her thoughts were a million miles away. She felt guilty for yelling at Elias now and for refusing his help. She hadn't know. If she had, she would've thanked him. It didn't matter that he broke her heart, he'd taken care of her and there was always a line as to how far she could take it with being too proud to ask for forgiveness. This was definitely one of those times that she would have to swallow her pride, because if it weren't for them, who knows where she'd be right now.

Levi jogged towards Lia’s apartment after work. It’d become his routine for the past month. He woke up early every morning to put in his hours in the jewelry shop, examining the new gems and arranging them into fine pieces to be sold and shipped to the Capitol. As soon as he finished, he left and headed to Lia’s apartment to relieve Eli of his post. It was still such a shock. Just as Eli said, Lia was in some sort of waking coma. She still ate and drank, still blinked and breathed and let her heart beat. She just didn’t speak or respond in any other way, like a shell of a person. Deep down, Levi worried that she would never come back to them. He still had hope. In the meantime while he waited, he befriended Eli. Even though the other man had quite some temper, he was a good guy. Levi learned that as they jointly cared for Lia, becoming more thankful for Eli’s help each day. It felt like a new chapter in his life, complete with new characters and a new setting. Eli and Emilia felt more like family than his parents did. Levi got to the complex, turning into the building and immediately slamming into Eli’s solid figure. The first thing he noticed was Elias’s bloody hand and matching expression. ”She’s awake?” Levi repeated incredulous. The news was so good that he didn’t stop to think about why Eli was leaving and why he seemed to be angry about it all. Levi took the stairs three at a time until he got to the top floor, pausing for a second as he saw the massive hole in the crushed plaster of the wall. The thoughts connected. Elias had punched the wall, but why? The initial glamour of the news wore off quickly. Something must have been terribly wrong for Elias to react like this. He approached carefully, walking through the apartment to find Lia still in her room, Emilia in her arms. The sight of her sitting up, moved out of her previous position with her eyes on him was enough to stop his heart for a moment. ”Oh-my-god, Lia,” he exhaled, blinking a few times. ”I just… you’re awake.”Words: 402 Tags: Elias R.
