Thud. Startled by the sound of her axe striking the ground in frustration (Harpy was having quite a bit of trouble catching something to eat), several ravens flew out of the sparse grove of trees, letting out hoarse cries of fear and surprise that resonated across the flat landscape. Her axe. Hers. That was what she had just thought to herself. It saddened Harpy that she was starting to think that way. When had it begun? When had it become her axe rather than her father's prize tool? A painful twinge of melancholy struck Harpy low in her stomach, making her want to throw the axe again. Ever since that fatefully tragic night, a constant ache had settled deep in her belly, never letting up for even an instant. Pippa had it easy. Her toddler mind had been able to dispose of the sadness easily and quickly. Only a couple of months after their escape from District 7, she had called Harpy "Mother"; Harpy had launched in a long, furious tantrum, shouting at Pippa until she relented and apologized for her slip-up, lapsing into one of her long fits of silence. Silence. Silence? Where's her nonsense animal talk gibberish? Pippa?! Harpy had been so caught up in herself and her worries about food and family that she had stopped paying attention to Pippa whatsoever. Where is she? Where did she go? Had she wandered off? She could have been anywhere at that point. She cannot get too close to that fence. If she gets caught, punished... Harpy would never forgive herself. In the barren, empty, overused fields that surrounded District 9, one could be seen for miles, and Pippa would not be hard to spot. She was probably stumbling around out in the open meadows, playing, vulnerable to anyone's naked eye. Without hesitation, Harpy picked up her axe and started yelling her sister's name. "Pippa? Pippa where did you go? Pippa!" The longer she shouted, the more the shrillness and volume of her voice increased. If she was caught, Harpy didn't know what she would do. "Pippa?!?" Pippa's belly rumbled, and Harpy said she was going to get them some food. So she sat and waited for a little bit, watching her sister go off with her axe. It was no fair that Harpy was the only one that got to use the axe. Maybe Pippa was really good with it, but she would never know because she was too young. She was too young for all sorts of things. The little girl folded her arms across her chest at this thought, angry at the unfairness of it. There were lots of things she could do, and if she couldn't use the axe, she'd do something else. Pippa stood up with the best intentions. She was going to find something to feed her belly instead. But as she turned slowly, quietly, to figure out which way to go, a flash of brown caught her attention. It bounded between a few trees and then stopped, standing on its hind legs to peer around. She froze, not moving an inch, and it seemed not to notice her as it went back down on all fours again. She walked carefully toward it, not wanting to make a single sound and scare it. She didn't think she'd seen one of these creatures before. It was almost like a squirrel, but fatter and the tail wasn't quite as bushy. She'd have to ask Harpy what it was later. The little creature led her away, and the trees thinned. Beyond the trees, sunlight streamed in, bright and warm. The brightness of it was so surprising after the woods and it pulled Pippa toward it. At the very edge of the treeline, the creature stood up again on its hind legs and made a funny little chirruping, whistling sound. There was an answering chirrup somewhere out in the vast grasses and the creature took off. She followed, going down to all fours herself once she entered the open land, not wanting them to think she was scary. Small creatures were scared of big things, so she had to be small like them. She kept following, and then the creature she was following suddenly dove into the ground. Behind him was another creature a little ways back, and it saw Pippa. Freezing again, Pippa stared at the little brown creature, who stood up on its hind legs to watch her. She pursed her lips together and repeated the chirruping whistle she'd heard. The creature, after a moment, repeated one back to her, the sound a little different because it was saying something back to her. She wanted to smile so bad, but animals didn't smile so she couldn't. She moved a little closer and the animal didn't run off, but had relaxed back onto its four legs. She'd stopped to chirrup at it again when she heard her name being yelled behind her. The creature bounded down into the ground and she let out a little screech of irritation, standing up to face the forest behind her. "You scare her off!" Pippa shouted back toward the trees, which were a bit back now. "She was'a show me things, now she gone. Why you yell me?" She was going to learn this new creature, and she wasn't sure if she'd see one again any time soon with all the noise her sister was making. Relief flooded Harpy's body when Pippa's disjointed screech scraped at her ears. Having sprinted out of the wood, Harpy skidded to a stop when she saw her sister. Despite being hardly a third of Harpy's size, the little three year old leapt up, her expression murderous, and stood defiantly. What's up with her? I'm the one who should be angry; she could get us caught, damn it! But Harpy hardly was mad. If she had lost Pippa, Harpy didn't know if she could go on living. A smile spread across her face, and she ran forward to pull her sister back into the secluded safety of the trees. But before she could reach her to pick her up, Pippa was screaming again. "You scare her off! Why you yell me?" Pippa's slightly incorrect speech made Harpy's smile wider. She was truly a daughter of the wild; it was where she had grown up, it was where she belonged. But English was not the forest's first language and it wouldn't be Pippa's either. Granted, the little three year-old still had many years of learning ahead of her, but Harpy was not the best teacher, and Pippa had an uncanny knack for speaking with animals. Someday, she'll be so much better than me at hunting. She'll whisper to them until they walk into her traps! I can hardly even catch something with this axe alone. But right now she's not old enough. She can't do it yet. The thought of relying on Pippa unsettled Harpy; would Pippa get tired of her eventually? She didn't want to become baggage. Conjuring up a face full of hurt and annoyance, Harpy scolded the little one. "Pippa, you can't just run off like that! Look how close you are too the fence! Anyone could have seen you, and you could get caught! I need you to stay put when I'm busy like that." She frowned down at her, and then leaned foreward to grab her hand, tugging her towards the wood. "Come on. We cannot be seen. Let's go!" Her tone was harsh, but she hoped it would get the point across. They needed to go.

Nydia couldn't help it. She really, really couldn't. Dominic Williams was good to her and the other orphans. He watched over them, and in return, she wanted to be good. For the most part, she was. She'd agreed to his plan, helping with the kids in the morning and then letting him follow her as she wandered the district for a little while in the afternoon. But even though he was trying to help and protect her, he was just always there. She didn't like it, all the watching. So today, she'd snuck out again. It wasn't like Nydia was doing anything wrong, or really anything different from when Dominic was with her. She looked for more pieces and parts that she could take home for her inventions, or she talked to the people of District 9. She felt like she was getting to know everyone, and they her. It was possible though that going out alone today wouldn't last long though, since because everyone was starting to know her, they also knew Dominic and where she was supposed to be. Anyone could go off and tell him at any time, so she wandered farther. She wandered toward the fence, longing to see the open field and the edge of the woods that she couldn't ever go to. And it was precisely because she couldn't go there that she dreamed of it, often. Reaching the fence, she paused and listened for the electric hum. Unsurprisingly, it was absent - though, to double check, she picked up a stick and threw it at the wires. Nothing happened. Picking up the stick, Nydia walked along the fenceline, letting the wood slide along the wires as she went. Electricity was needed for the rebuilding of the district, and though it would one day come to the fence, she figured that day was a long way off. There was still so much to do. After a little walking, she heard voices - just barely, but they were clearly coming from the other side of the fence. The side she wanted so badly to get to. Dropping the stick, Nydia picked up her pace, running toward the sound but instinctively keeping herself low, just in case it was someone bad. She was smart enough not to yell out that she was there. A head with fiery red hair popped out of the grass, turning to yell back at the woods. Then a bigger girl came out of the woods, coming to the smaller one to yell right back. Nydia couldn't help but smile as the words reached her, and she hooked her fingers around the wire as she stopped to listen when she was close enough. They didn't want to get seen, and maybe Nydia should have just let the two girls disappear back into the woods. But - she couldn't. She couldn't just watch them leave and continue to wonder, continue to dream about what was out there. "Why can't you be seen?" she called out to the pair, pressing close against the fence as if it would somehow bring her closer to them. "Are you hiding from someone?" Pippa couldn't help stepping back when Harpy started coming toward her. Her sister was mad, but she was mad too. She'd been so close to learning something about the funny, almost-squirrel thing. Maybe it knew food. Maybe it knew secret places. Now, she'd never know, and since Harpy didn't look like she was holding food, it seemed like the interruption had been for nothing at all. Both of their bellies were going to go right on being empty. Pippa kept the anger on her face even at seeing her sister's face. She wasn't going to be scared. She wasnt, even though she was a little. Harpy could be mean, ordering her around, and she was so much bigger than Pippa. Harpy reminded her that she was still small, even though she was bigger than a lot of the creatures they met in the forest. Harpy was supposed to be the boss of her, but sometimes, she just didn't want to have a boss. She had her own things to do. "Take. Too. Long!" Pippa shot back at her, followed by a screech when Harpy grabbed for her hand. She wasn't strong enough to pull away, and so she was pulled toward the forest by her sister. She knew they'd have to go back there, but because she was angry, it was the last thing she wanted to do. What did it matter about the fence anyway? Who cares if anyone saw them? She didn't understand their hiding, not that she was in any sort of hurry to see other people, which Harpy claimed there were. She liked the forest and her animals just fine, and the people on the other side of the fence didn't matter to her one bit. Harpy had said that those people would try and take them out of the forest. Well, Pippa just wouldn't let them. Pippa was fighting against her sister's hand, and failing, when she heard a voice behind her. She whipped around, stumbling back into Harpy as she did so, to see a figure against the fence. It had to be a people, like Harpy was saying there were. It stood like them, seemed small like them, and used their words. But Harpy said the people were dangerous, and even though she was mad at her sister, she still had to believe that much. She wasn't going to let the people scare her though, so she wriggled out of Harpy's hand and made a jump toward the people, landing on all fours. She didn't know how to people scare, but she knew how the wolves had done it. She growled, baring her teeth warningly as she stared at it. "Pippa, I don't care if I'm taking a long time! You can't run away like that!" She was being unreasonable. Why couldn't she just understand the dangers? Now that Harpy had run away from their old home, they had no choice. Who knows if anyone were looking for them or not! But they had to be safe, and if safe meant sticking to the shaded regions of the world, Harpy would make sure they did that. Risking it was not an option, and Pippa wouldn't ruin it for them. She wouldn't let her. Another screech rang out, tearing through the air like her axe. The air stilled for a moment, enunciating the volume of the sound. "Pippa! Stop screaming! You're going to get us caught!" Her sister was lashing angrily, her face completely rabid. We need to get out of here. Shit shit, anyone could have heard that. She glanced over her shoulder at the fence. She couldn't see any movement on the other side of it, but she prayed that no one heard them all the same. "Come ON, Pippa!" With a tug, Harpy pulled Pippa towards the woods, and although the little one fought with seemingly all of her might, she was succeeding... until a small but clear shout came from behind them. Without hesitation, Harpy ducked into the tall grasses, shoving Pippa's head into them with her. At least, she tried to shove her sister down; instead, Pippa wriggled free and leapt forward like a hungry animal. "Shit," she muttered under her breath. Harpy popped up again, shouting "Pippa NO!" and running after her, but she stopped short when she saw what she was doing. Growling? Like- a dog? She seemed to be trying to scare them off, almost. Harpy shook her surprise off, grabbing Pippa around the waist and pulling her backwards. She slung her writhing form over her shoulder. Before she turned and ran, she took her first full glance at the district resident, pausing. She was just... a girl? Harpy's eyes narrowed with suspicion, scrutinizing the small form down to her dirty shoes. She seemed safe... and it had been ages since she had talked to anyone who could speak fluently. She loosened her grasp on Pippa slightly, though she still left her slung over her shoulder like a sack. Stepping forward, Harpy followed the girl with her eyes. For some reason, one thought ran through Harpy's head: Where did I leave my axe?WC: 410 Tags: Pippa Alderbrook Nydia Caden

Nydia watched the reaction to her words, pressing even closer against the fence. She loved a good mystery, and how two girls had ended up on the other side of the fence certainly was one. Despite the freedoms she had, she often felt caged. 8-year-olds couldn't just go wherever they pleased usually, and she had to live at the orphanage. Okay, so the orphanage wasn't the worst - she had Dominic, and some of the other kids were pretty nice. But the kids came and went, sometimes, and it didn't really feel like a family. Not like the family she'd had before her mother died. She didn't know where to go looking for a new one, but it didn't seem like the orphanage was the best place for that.
The littler girl jumped toward her and growled, and Nydia's eyes widened in surprise. No one had ever growled at her before. She was too entranced by them to step back though, so simply watched the girl growl at her, her face vicious. The bigger girl then picked her up, and what had potential to be scary one day evaporated completely. She guessed the two girls were sisters, and it was more than just the red hair that told her that. It was the way they acted around each other and yelled at each other. That felt like a sister thing, though it wasn't like she had any experience being a sister. She'd seen sisters before though, mostly other orphans like her. Were these sisters orphans too?
Neither girl had answered her questions, so Nydia decided she'd answer some they might have about her. She really didn't want them to run back off into the woods, and maybe talking was the only way to get them to stay. "My name is Nydia Caden," she began. "I'm eight years old. I used to live in District 13 before it got attacked, but now I live here, in District 9. I'm not going to turn you in to anyone, but I want to know how you guys got on the other side of the fence. I didn't think anyone could."

"My woods too," Pippa said grumpily when Harpy told her she couldn't just run away. She knew Harpy was bigger and stronger and older, but she didn't want to just sit still while her sister did all the fun stuff. There was way too much going on in the world for her to just wait, like the squirrel-like thing she'd followed. Harpy couldn't listen and follow and be quiet like Pippa could, so she scared away the animals sometimes. So Pippa couldn't help struggling against Harpy as she was pulled away toward the woods, where she was probably going to be asked to sit and wait again while Harpy went off and didn't get them any dinner. Then the people came, and everything changed. The people wasn't scared by Pippa's growling at all. She'd need to learn how to frighten people. Maybe because they were bigger, it was like frightening big animals. But she didn't know how to do that either, because she hadn't run into any of the big mean animals and stuck around to see what they did. Running always sounded like a better idea. Suddenly, she was lifted into the air, and she squirmed against Harpy's hands. She couldn't wait until the day she was big and strong, and she couldn't just be lifted away. Well, sometimes it was nice to be held, but now was not one of those times. Now was a time when she was trying to be scary, and her sister had ruined it. On Harpy's shoulder, Pippa continued to squirm, because now she couldn't see the people at all. She didn't know what they were doing, and she didn't like that. The people was talking now though, and Harpy wasn't running away. Pippa didn't understand what a District 9 or District 13 was, and she didn't trust that the people wouldn't turn them in. People were dangerous Harpy had said, and maybe this one was just a tricky one. "Go away," she called back at it from Harpy's shoulder, since she was just getting tired trying to get down.
