Hazel isn't like the other street rats that don't have homes. She had a family and she had a home. She just didn't want either of them. She grew up with 2 other siblings, a sister and a brother. She was, would you guess it, the middle child. She was 11 when war broke out, old enough to understand what was going on but young enough to not truly understand why. Her family hid out in their home inside a safe room that they had stocked up because they knew war was coming and the end was nigh. Yes, they were those kinds of people. And her parents would have had more children except that her mother couldn't have anymore, call it divine intervention if you want. 

One night, their home was broken into, their secret hideout found and Hazel, along with her two other siblings, were taken. She never did find out what happened to her brother and sister, but what they did to her and made her do changed her life forever. She was sold into slavery and the man that bought her wanted her for only one thing. She was with him for a year until the place they lived in was captured by The Capitol. By then, the damage to Hazel was done. The man who rescued her couldn't help her, she knew that, no one could. So on their way to wherever the soldiers were taking her, she ran away at the very first chance she got. But she only ran into more trouble. Maybe if she had stayed with her rescuers, she could have been saved. But she didn't and she wasn't.

She was back into the life of a slave, her body not only used for sex but labor. She didn't just serve one person, she served whoever could pay for her, which wasn't that expensive. One man though, was different from the rest. He was kind, though he still used her, but at least he was gentle. It was this man, Leo, that saw how brilliant her mind truly was. He showed her some things on the computers and electronics he had, she was able to break things down and build them back up, sometimes better than before. She was able to understand the language of computers and he taught her how to hack into different databases and systems. He taught her everything in such a short amount of time that he was sure she was a genius.

When she turned 16, another man that had become her regular wanted to buy her and make her his wife. Leo outbid him and bought Hazel. Although he had stopped using her body years ago, he used her for her hacking skills. She lived in his house, which somehow became a home for the both of them. She came to trust Leo and looked up to him.

But even with Leo, she wasn't safe. Another group of Capitol soldiers raided their home and this time, they weren't there to rescue her. Hazel ran out of fear and was able to escape before the soldiers took her, she knew that they were able to capture Leo, but she didn't know what happened to him afterwards.

Hazel didn't look back. She was 19 and on her own. And then the war ended, and even after she found her parents, she refused to go back. Hazel wanted them to keep thinking she was dead, it was for the best. She could never have her old life back.
