Charlie loved autumn. He loved when the colors turned on the trees in District 12 and when the chilly, but not cold, air breezed against his face. District 12 was a pretty ugly district, but when autumn came, it turned it into a whole different district. He spent a lot of his time outside of the fence. There was one spot that he was able to be let out of. He knew he wouldn't get in trouble, and it was the perfect place for him to think. He didn't have any friends and his mother worked in a soup kitchen until late at night. So, when he was out here, nobody could touch him. He wouldn't get hurt and people didn't look at him in a funny way.
He started his afternoon ritual. As soon as he got off of school, he ran out of there. He went down alleyways and through different coal dig sites to get away from the people after him. Charlie would then run to the fence, make sure nobody was around him, and climbed under. He would get far enough away so nobody saw him, but he was close enough to get back to the district in case something bad were to happen. The fence was electrified, though after years of him going under the fence, he had made a large enough hole behind his home that he was still able to slip under there easily.
He would then find a tree, the same tree he always went to, and climbed up it to the last branch that would sustain my weight. Charlie could see for miles and miles on a clear day, the district behind him and the world in front of him. He often thought about leaving the district, leaving everything behind and starting a new life where people didn't know who he was. But he had his mother here and he couldn't leave her behind. He wanted to take care of her after the hell he put the both of them through.
He watched the sunset in silence, the breeze and the animals filling the sounds around him. If he could live out here with his mom, with nobody else bothering him, he would. But he didn't. He had jobs to fulfill and laws to abide to. He sighed and closed his eyes. He immediately opened them up. But instead of the sunset he would watch, it was dark. The stars were out and it was almost completely dark. He cursed under his breath. He had to have slept for a couple hours without realizing. He jumped out of the tree and towards the fence. The Peacekeepers would be patrolling as they usually did at night. He was screwed.
Charlie got as close as he could to the fence while still being hidden by the shadows. There was a Peacekeeper by his home, and his heart was racing. He would have to find another opening. His mother was probably extremely worried about him. He walked the fence, staying back and trying to find the perfect place to crawl under or jump over. He didn't know what to do. He was panicked. "Hello?" he whispered, wondering if anyone could hear him but wanting someone to help him, even if it was just so that he wouldn't get arrested, or worse, killed. WORD COUNT: 572 TAG: Open (or it can be a oneshot, no big deal!)
