It was the middle of the afternoon, which was good because at least none of this would look too awkward. He walked beside Ingrid towards the restaurant where they were meeting Zeke. For as long as he'd known Ingrid, he'd tried to keep her away from Zeke. Jake liked to think that he did something amazing for Ingrid, he did help her when she lived in the Districts and needed his help. He had been there for her when she needed someone. For the first time in his life, he was actually someone's hero. After everything calmed down and Ingrid moved to District 2, his home district, they became best friends. That's how Jake wanted it to stay. Yes, he was also friends with Zeke, but that was also a different kind of friendship and a different kind of bond. He wanted the two friendships to be separate, but mostly, he just didn't want to be pushed to the side.
"You know, I bet Zeke won't even show up. He's kind of flaky like that," Jake said when they neared the restaurant. It wasn't too late to back out. They hadn't been spotted yet. But for some reason both he and Ingrid's feet kept moving towards the doors. Dammit. He sighed and opened the door for her. Maybe he should have brought Aurelia, but she had to work today. Besides, it would have been weird. It would have been like a double date. Which he definitely did not want to happen. Because then he'd definitely be cast to the side and become a third wheel. Jake wasn't a third wheel. He was someone's pair, or sometimes he was the only wheel, but never a third wheel.
He spotted Zeke already sitting down at a table and waved at him, sighing. "Wow. He showed up. How... nice," he mumbled and then proceeded to walk to the table. Once there, he introduced them. "Ingrid, this is my partner Zeke. Zeke, this is my friend Ingrid," he smiled between the two of them and chuckled awkwardly, "you two finally meet. After all these years, huh? Crazy how you two never met before."

Zeke felt uncomfortable as hell. To start with, who the hell was Ingrid? Zeke thought he knew everything about Jake. In a petty way, Zeke felt hurt. Jake knew about what happened with Mason, a pretty big damn secret, and yet Jake couldn’t be open with some broad? It admittedly made Zeke think that Ingrid was ugly or someone to be ashamed of. If Jake felt the need to keep her a secret, then he figured that something odd had to be up. Or, stranger yet, that Jake was having some kind of affair.
He got to the restaurant early and took a seat. He checked his watch, then ordered a coffee and a slice of pie. He had already finished the pie the time the door opened and Jake came in with who Zeke assumed was Ingrid. She had the casual look about her that made her seem like she would be the type of girl who didn’t really hang out with other girls – he didn’t know how he came to that conclusion, whether it was her demeanour or the way she styled herself.
And she was attractive. It made it seem like an affair was more likely just for that fact. Why else would Jake keep a beautiful woman such a secret? He stood as the two of them approached. He attempted a smile but it came out more like a smirk. Smiling at strangers wasn’t really Zeke’s forte.
“Hi, you must be Ingrid,” he offered a hand to as he would anyone else. “I’m Zeke. As you probably already know,” the latter part of his sentence made him cringe inside. It came out so awkward and uncomfortable. He looked away from her quickly and waited for them to sit before he did likewise.

Ingrid had a rough night the previous night. She somehow managed to get two days off in a row which was wonderful. She thought she would have been able to catch up on some much-needed sleep. This was not the case. The sleep would start off well, before turning into a horrid nightmare. There was one point where Ingrid thought she had woken up, went to the bathroom to splash some water on her face then upon looking into the mirror would see father behind her. That's when she'd actually wake up in a cold sweat. Panting for air. It would take hours sometimes to get back to sleep. It wasn't always like this. There would sometimes be months where she'd go not thinking about it. As if she and her sister always lived in District 2.
The sound of Jake's voice snapped her out of the trance she had fallen into somehow. “It'd be a shame If didn't show up. I was looking forward to the man you often speak of.” If, Ingrid was recalling correctly. She thought Jake had mentioned Zeke had an accident and either lost one of his eyes or has some sort of injury. So, hoping to start things on a good note with him. She brought him a new eye patch. Working in the hospital, she knew eye patches would stretch and get worn out pretty quick.
Maybe Jake didn't want her to meet Zeke because he only had one eye? Why would Ingrid care? She's a nurse! Plus, eye patches can be very dashing.
Ingrid first saw him when he stood to greet them. Completely ignoring Jake, she smiled pleasantly at Zeke and shook his hand. “Yup, that's me.” she laughed nervously to herself before continuing “It's lovely to meet you, Zeke,” she said. Ingrid was going to be the best she could be today. It's not every day you get to meet an attractive man. Everyone stood for a moment it seemed before Ingrid took a seat.
Ingrid ordered herself a hot chocolate. She wasn't a big fan of tea or coffee. Hot chocolate warmed her soul and felt like it was trying to help ease her guilty conscious. “ I've heard a lot about you, Zeke. It's good to put a face to the name now.” she smiled. “Oh!” she explained and reached for her clutch but stopped when she actually got a hold of her clutch and pulled out a little tiny black bundle. She looked at the bundle and then back at Zeke and repeated this a few times.
She's already made a fool of herself. Might as well explain herself. “I was previously told you had an eye injury and had to wear an eye patch so I bought one because I know how worn they get really quick.” she paused and looked up at Zeke. “I'm really glad to see your eye is all better!” the way she spoke could only be described as a genuine care tone. Which she was happy that his eye injury was better.

Jake watched as Zeke stood up, introduced himself and offered his hand to Ingrid. His eyes closed into slits as he pursed his lips. "Am I invisible, I literally just said that," Jake mumbled. He stood watching them interact, trying to gauge what kind of first meeting this was going to be. So far, everything was a little awkward. Jake clapped his hands together as they all sat down after a few awkward seconds.
Jake watched Ingrid pull out the eye patch. His eyes widened slightly before he put a hand over his mouth to cover his smile and try to prevent himself from laughing. He'd told Ingrid that Zeke probably didn't want to meet sometime this week because he wasn't up for it, but after she continued to press the matter, he came up with the story of how Zeke got pink eye so bad the he couldn't see at all and they'd probably have to do some corrective surgery to fix all the damage done to it. Of course, Jake had no idea what he was talking about, but it was the best he could come up with at the moment.
Jake looked at Zeke and pressed his lips together before shrugging and shook his head as if he had no idea what she was talking about. It was difficult to contain his laughter and he began to shake trying to hold it in. His face reddened until he finally laughed out loud. "I'm sorry- it was a joke," he said in between fits of laughter.
Thankfully, he was saved by the waiter who brought them their drinks.
"This is... nice," Jake said taking a drink.

Zeke’s eyes flashed to Jake. His first instinct was to be incredibly rude, as per his personality, but he was very aware of a person with whom he was not familiar. “Yes, but I was trying to be polite.” He emphasized the two words so that maybe, just maybe, Jake would get the hint that Zeke was trying to behave himself. It was something that he only really did when Jake was around. How could he not when Jake was probably the most important person to him?
“Erm,” Zeke said awkwardly as he accepted the eye patch. Again, he looked at Jake for a cue. This girl was weird. He wasn’t sure if it was a made up story that Jake had told Ingrid in order to impress her, so he didn’t want to ruin it. “Yeah, I’m feeling better now, but uh, thanks,” his voice was kind of flat because he didn’t trust that Jake hadn’t told her something incredibly embarrassing. Unfortunately, moments later Jake confessed it was a joke, which made the whole situation that much more awkward. He wanted to give Jake shit, he really did, but he somehow miraculously managed to maintain it.
“So how’s that, uh, personal issue resolving itself? Did the doctor have to do the – ” Zeke used his fingers to imitate someone’s finger going into a butt. Zeke didn’t make jokes often, but this seemed important. If Jake was going to tell lies about Zeke in order to impress Ingrid, he could do the same.
“So, er, why was this meeting important?” he figured he may as well get to the point. This was so uncomfortable it was painful. “Oh God, are you pregnant?” he turned to Ingrid in shock. “Ah f*ck, seriously?” his attention was back to Jake. He couldn’t think of another reason why it was so important for him to meet this girl.

This was awkward. However, she did appreciate that he still took the eye patch even though he clearly didn't need it and for the fact that Jake was lying the entire time. Ingrid was mortified right now, she wasn't going to show it. She was trying to best to be the best she could be. Jake was making this very hard to do so.
As Jake was laughing his butt off, Ingrid couldn't help but feel utterly betrayed by him. Her best friend, Friend #1 was ruining her chances of making a new friend. It almost seems like he had done this before... Like he was sabotaging this. Two can play this game. Ingrid turned to Jake to start laying it on thick before Zeke took her attention.
Mentioning and motioning to something to do with Jake's butt. Her eyes turn to surprise and to look back at Jake waiting for him to say something. Now, Jake usually came to Ingrid with all his health-related questions. usually and if this was true and she had no reason to believe Zeke would make something up. This only added to the utter betrayal she felt towards Jake. Not even coming to her with questions. She was a damn nurse for goodness sake. She could treat nearly anything!
Ingrid took a sip of her drink as Zeke accused her of being pregnant. Her immediate reaction was to spit her drink all over Jake who she just happened to be facing at the time. She didn't even apologize to Jake because she was still upset about Jake ruining their trust and sending their friendship to utter doom.
“Oh no, I'm virgin.”
Ingrid seemed to make it a habit of embarrassing herself at this point. This word vomit just started to happen and it didn't seem like it was going to end anytime soon. It was clear, she realized what she had said and for a moment there looked like she wanted to kill herself.
Her eye's flashed to Jake, she was hiding her anger very well today. All the anger she felt towards Jake at this moment. She felt she needed to teach him a lesson of causing her first initial embarrassment that was obviously the cause of the rest of the embarrassment she was causing.
“Jake here-” she started. “must have wanted his two very best friends to-” she was caught off when her hand 'accidentally' knocked over his drink that was on the table. She wasn't sure if it spilled enough to spill on him but it did make a bit of a mess. “Oh, sweet niblets. I am so sorry Jake” to anyone that didn't know Ingrid. She would probably sound very sincere. “Let me get a rag,” she added before standing and left to get a rag from an employee.
She returned a few minutes later with a couple rags and started to clean the mess off the table.

Jake's eyes slid towards Ingrid, then back at Zeke just in time to see him motion with his fingers. He shifted in his seat. He looked back at Ingrid, "no... no.. that... nope." He glared at Zeke, motioning with his hand as if to tell him to cut it out. He couldn't believe Zeke tried to embarrass him, but he had lied about Zeke to Ingrid. He supposed he deserved it. But he honestly thought that Ingrid would cancel the plans when she heard his excuse. Perhaps it just wasn't a good enough excuse or maybe next time he had to just go full out with something horribly disgusting. Well, there wasn't going to be a next time because it was too late. He was still drinking from his glass when Zeke asked if Ingrid was pregnant. At the exact same time that Ing spit her drink on Jake, Jake spit his drink all over Zeke. Then Ing had to tell him that she was virgin and it made Jake choke on the rest of the drink that was currently in his mouth. The drink went down the wrong pipe and Jake coughed, trying to get it out, but it didn't help and seemed to only make it worse. He beat his fist onto his chest as his face began to turn red and a vein popped out on his forehead right beside the cut that Ing had stitched up a few nights ago. Jake breathed, finally able to cough out the liquid from his wind pipe. When he looked at Ingrid, she was looking angrily at him for some reason he had no idea. Jake's eyes widened as if facially asking her 'what did I do?' But then she spilled his drink on the table, some of it dripping on his lap. Jake groaned and sat back on his seat and dabbed off some of the drink. Wow. This was great. Just great. This is what happens when he let his two friends meet. When Ing started to clean the table, he looked at Zeke and smiled, giving him a thumbs up even though he knew this was probably the most awkward thing they'd both had to experience. "So um. No Ingrid is not pregnant. She just... wanted to meet you because, she's curious about you. You know, you're my partner and best friend. And she's... also my best friend," Jake tried to salvage the situation even though he was slightly glad it wasn't going better. What would happen if Ingrid and Zeke actually got along? Then they've be friends with each other and he's be left out. WC: 422 TAG: @ingrid / @ezekiel

Zeke sat back in his seat and crossed his arms over his chest, rather pleased of himself. An eye injury wasn’t a bad thing to lie about, but it had all had come crumbling down. Jake could have pre-warned Zeke about the lie so he could have been prepared for this, maybe come with his own eye patch. Maybe it would have gotten Jake some brownie points for taking care of his best friend.
Disgusted that he had just been spat on, Zeke shook his fingers in an aghast fashion. He motion for a waitress to bring over some more napkins. He had just begun to clean up the mess when Ingrid stated that she was a virgin. He tried not to react, but found it very difficult. To start with, it was hard to imagine that such a beautiful woman would be a virgin. On the other hand, the only virgins that Zeke were familiar with were those in high school, and that was a crowd that he wasn’t about to dip into, even if they were of age. He looked at her curiously, trying to determine her age.
“But how old are you?” he asked her, Zeke’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. Initially, he didn’t question Ingrid’s adulthood, but now he couldn’t determine it for certain. She still appeared young and could be some sort of high school senior. Zeke, having lost his virginity at fifteen, had a hard time imagining that anyone could graduate without having sex.
When Jake began to cough hysterically, Zeke laughed. He knew his friend would come out of it. Zeke had begun to realize what was a serious coughing attack or something not to worry about, and this was the latter.
Zeke focused his attention back to Ingrid, trying to not think about the fact that no one had ever touched her that way before. Was it because she thought she wouldn’t like it…? Was she waiting for marriage…? Was she somehow repulsive under those layers of attractiveness? He got snagged on the word ‘two best friends’, however.
“Two best friends?” Zeke demanded, pettily. While she was gone, he was left with Jake. “Two best friends? I’m not trying to nag, but what…? I’ve known you since the dawn of time. Are you sure you’re not trying to get on this girl? A best friend? Do you know the same sort of shit that I’ve shared with you?”
At that moment, Ingrid returned to the table. He gave her another forced smile and kept relatively silent, annoyed by Jake’s snub. IT'S LIKE AN AVALANCHE

Ingrid was the only one that didn't get spit on by the spit takes. She still dying from embarrassment because of her word vomit. Who just blurts out their sex quota. She knew this was the end of any chance she had with Zeke. No one wanted to be with a virgin! They don't know anything! Everything is new and they suck at sex! It wasn't like she was saving herself or was waiting for the right person. She wasn't particularly actively trying to get rid of this status either. She had too many things to worry about when they lived in District 10 and having sex wasn't even on the list. When she was moved to District 2, she was still in survival mode for so long. It was only when the war was over she slowly came down from the 'fight or flight' mindset. Honestly, the more the thought about it. Jake was the only guy she's ever dated and even then... They held hands and maybe kissed once... twice maybe? She wasn't very social in the beginning either. Didn't and still doesn't have the biggest friend circle. It wasn't her fault still! When she did meet guys, they would suddenly stop chatting her up. Honestly, she secretly suspected that had a lot to do with Jake though.
“Twenty-one,” she replied. She was going to ask him for his age. She was curious but only because he asked her for her age. She knew he had to be older. He looked a little older. She wasn't worried. He looked out of high school for sure and that's really all that mattered to her. Her head snapped to Jake who was dying.
“I swear you pop those stitches, You're going to get staples.” she threatened. Ingrid had seen people really choke. She knew if he was coughing he was breathing and if he was breathing he'd probably be alright. She knew CPR if otherwise. She figured he was probably good with her knowing these facts.
When Ingrid returned. She genuinely smiled back at Zeke. She couldn't help but feel as those this was not going to get any better. Anytime soon. When she first saw Zeke. She knew he was a peacekeeper but honestly, he was nothing like he thought he was going to be. She didn't expect him to smile so much? He didn't really have a face that looked like it smiled often. Perhaps he was forcing himself to be polite? She couldn't think of why someone would put themselves through that.
“Like I was saying. His two best friends. Well, I should really say, he's my best friend. But I'm sure you're really his best friend and I'm more like... Friend #2 compared to you. I'm getting off track.” she paused. As she finished cleaning the mess up and took a seat. “When Jake mentioned you a few times but what really made me curious was that time, Jake came in for a burn treatment and he mentioned how you two saved that family from that house fire and, don't worry. He didn't skip on any of the details. Mostly how you were the one to break down that door an ran in without hesitation.” as she spoke she was nervously looking at and fidgeting with her hands. It really impressed her. She wasn't sure if this story was true because she had figured out the eye patch story was completely faked. “And even if he made all that up. That says a lot about a guy. For someone else to say that about him. I just became curious about you and I'm not originally from this district and people see me as an outsider so I couldn't just ask my elderly neighbor about you. But if it is true. That also says a lot about a guy.” Ingrid looked up at Zeke and smiled softly once more. “Just good to put a face to the name too...”
her word vomit was coming out in forms of rambling and giving out information about herself that really wasn't a necessary part of the topic. Like, that she wasn't born here. Now, she hasn't faced any prejudice about her being from another district and certifiably hoped it wouldn't start now. Honestly, she probably wouldn't blame them. If they knew what she had done to get here they should outcast her. That was one of her worries about living here but also, at this moment. She felt fearless.

Jake hated that both of them seemed to competing for the best friend spot. Sure he and Zeke had a long, long history together. But he and Ingrid also had some history, of course not as long, but still history together. Being friends with them was also different in their own ways. When he hung out with Ingrid, he was able to be more silly. When he hung out with Zeke, he could be more serious. And then there was Aurelia. With Aurelia, he was real. These were the three most important people in his life and each held a different place in his heart. He loved them in different ways, but in some way, they all occupied the same space. And outside of that space was the emptiness.
He tried to stay in the moment, to not get brought outside of what was going on. Before Jake could tell Zeke to stop being a drama queen, Ingrid had come back. Jake watched when she began to speak and he thought she would pause for a breath, but she kept talking. Jake smiled at Zeke and tried to hide his laughter. Ingrid was doing her thing again and he didn't like to interrupt her when she had word vomit because the most hilarious things usually came out of her mouth.
Jake nodded, "Zeke did all of that, I didn't make it up. I mean mayyyybe I exaggerated a little bit, but it's 90%... 85% true."
He then looked at Zeke, "Ingrid's a nurse. I don't know if that was clear before. But yeah, if you need your forehead stabled, she's definitely the person to go to."

Zeke was bad at relationships, and it was common knowledge. Anyone who knew Zeke knew it. When he dated girls, he simply didn’t put the effort in, or was too blunt for their tastes. He was so passionate about his job that it took up a lot of his time – not to mention the fact that he had two jobs, one of which he couldn’t tell anyone about. The reason for that was still unclear to him, but he did it anyway. His loyalty to his country sometimes meant that he couldn’t question what was happening. It was always at the front of his brain. The amount of girls that he slept with, however, was more than those he had dated. Usually, they didn’t know him. That tended to work in his favour. It wasn’t like he was a man-whore by any means, but he still had needs even if he was stubborn and felt like he didn’t need to be loved. He didn’t feel like he didn’t deserve it, he just never had a reason to think it was worth his time.
“Twenty-one,” he repeated. “I thought you were younger.”
He didn’t give any explanation for his reasoning, but the whole virgin thing probably had something to do with it. Zeke was at least glad that Jake wasn’t some sort of cradle robber.
“The f*cker deserves staples. You should have done it anyway. Pretended that there was no other option.” Zeke didn’t tend to have much of a sense of humour, but when he did, it was asshole-humour. Sometimes he wasn’t sure there was any other way to be funny – not that he could really be considered that. He was more interested in real conversation, not petty jokes to fill empty air.
Ingrid smiled at him when she returned and he had no idea why. Zeke flattened his hair without realizing that he was doing so. He couldn’t help but think that maybe he looked ridiculous somehow. The two of them weren’t really getting along that well, so he only assumed that she looked so jolly was because he was making a fool of himself, despite the fact that he thought the opposite was true.
He raised an eyebrow at her rambling. Ingrid seemed like the type of person who could make a person talk just because she would keep talking until she found a topic of conversation that interested the other person. To say that he wasn’t somewhat amused would be a lie.
He nodded in Jake’s direction. “Yeah, he wasn’t there at all,” he lied. Taking the piss regarding Jake was one of Zeke’s favourite things to do. He rolled his eyes. “I’m hoping I don’t need staples in my head any time soon. But who knows. Apparently I like kicking down doors and running into burning buildings.” Even though the story was mostly true, for some reason Zeke wanted to act like it wasn’t. Ingrid had seemed impressed by the story and he didn’t want to get the idea that he was some kind of hero.
Zeke glanced at Jake and he realized that he should continue the conversation somehow. He coughed slightly. “So, erm, how did you two meet?” he still wasn’t clear about whether Jake was trying to get with her, but there was no appropriate way to ask with red still next to them. He wasn’t really good at small talk and usually preferred quiet over just talking to fill the silence.
“Jake and I were together in the war,” he offered, simply. If Jake wasn’t there, he would have left already. Part of him hoped that Jake would want to leave soon. He had met Ingrid, and he was sufficiently introduced to her, in Zeke’s opinion. Now their little best friendship could stay in District 2 and out of Zeke’s interest. THE DEVIL'S IN THE DETAILS
