Seth was filthy. He was sweaty and when he went to wipe it from his forehead merely smudged dirt. He put the baseball cap back on his head in attempt to get the sun out of his eyes. It wasn’t that it was particularly hot outside, but one tended to get warm when cleaning out barns and the gardens. He was glad that the field work was primarily taken care of by his father. However, Seth and Troy were usually given the dirty work elsewhere. If they did do work in the fields, they would mostly be assisting their dad or even their mom. They were lucky enough to be able to pay some employees and have farm machinery. Not everyone was that lucky – in fact, most farming families weren’t that lucky.
They lived in an area in which other people lived close by, they just weren’t so close that you could see into each other’s homes. He sat on his front stairs and downed a glass of water before placing the empty glass next to him and looked out blankly at the dirt road that led to their house. He waited for Troy to come home, but what was the point anyway? He had already finished all the chores. He bitterly thought that Troy was probably out with Quinn and just avoiding being home. He knew he’d have to give his brother a good smack when he saw him next.

Nina looked inside the square container that housed a snake. Silky had been her pet snake for almost two months now and he kept her company. Aside from Silky, she was alone in the house, as she usually was since her father worked long hours at the heart of the District. Captain Rolf Winterfield couldn't afford to take a day off. As much as she loved her father, the loneliness she felt in the empty home and in her heart grew every day. It wasn't like she could just walk into town by herself either. Without someone there with her, especially her father, she'd only end up being run off by crude remarks from everyone.
She stood up straight and looked out the window in her room, it faced the Blake's house that was a few ways down from hers. Seth sat on the steps at the front and she knew it was Seth because he had a specific way of moving that was slightly different from Troy. It was like how if you smiled, half of your smile would look different from the other half even though they looked very similar when you look at the whole picture.
She closed the latch on the glass container and bounded down the stairs and out the door, then she had to rush back because she forgot to lock it. Her father always had to scold her about forgetting to lock the door. Nina bounded down the path that lead to the Blake's house.
"Hi Seth," Nina said with a smile. She'd known him almost as long as she'd known just about anyone in the District. Except of course her dad and a few Peacekeepers, but they didn't really count because they were adults. Every time she talked to Seth, her heart beat faster and her palms sweat. She crinkled up her nose at the sight of how dirty he was, but decided to sit next to him anyways.
"Oh you stink," she said and covered up her mouth and nose, laughing beneath her hand. One of the things she liked about Seth was that he talked to her like she was a normal person and not like she had a contagious disease.

Seth was letting his annoyance build up in him and he couldn’t help it. He was imaging all the shit he was going to give his brother when he came home and all the insults he was going to rip. Naturally this would end in them getting over it and off to go do something together. The two of them were never mad at each other for long. One of them also usually offered to do a chore for the other, but that hardly ever worked out.
He looked up when his name was called and saw his neighbour. Outside of Quinn, there weren’t many people in the area who were similar in age to them. Most of them were much younger for some reason. He was glad that none of the ankle biter kids found him. As much as he was able to amuse them, they also tired him out. He was also already tired and therefore did not have the patience for doing the same thing over and over again just to make them laugh.
“I would ask if you thought you smelt like roses but I really can’t smell anything over myself,” he said with a slight grin. It wasn’t that she had made him feel insecure, but he hadn’t really paid attention to how dirty he was, mainly because he didn’t realize he was going to have company. “Where’s Silky?” Seth enjoyed about any animal, but they had to have four legs or no legs. He was lowkey glad that Nina hadn’t decided to keep a pet spider or something. “What brings you to my humble abode?” he asked. “Unfortunately you came at the exact wrong time because now I can’t use you to help me with my laborious chores.”

She moved her hand away and leaned closer to him, her nose pointed in his direction and sniffed. "Maybe roses that have been working all day in a farm," Nina said. She always said weird things like that, but to her they were normal. The only people that actually had conversations with her were Seth, Troy, and Quinn. And her dad, but he didn't count. Sometimes the Peacekeepers would talk to her, but it was mostly 'how's school' and that would be the end of it. Their closeness made her flush slightly and she moved back to her previous position, her tiny bubble bouncing back into its proper place. She and Seth were friends, and even though they hugged and touched as friends, everything felt so much more to Nina. That's why she needed her bubble. It kept her in check from doing something stupid, like telling him secrets about how she thought about him constantly. Or sky forbid, kissing him. She didn't have to worry about that last part too much, she'd never kissed anyone before and it wasn't exactly on her top priorities.
"Silky just had a nice field mouse, so he's taking a nap," she said flattening out her skirt of her dress on her lap. "But you can come over whenever you want to visit him. My dad says it's okay if you come over when he's not home, I think I told you that last week didn't I? Anyways, he has this idea in his head that you're a nice young man. Which I'm not exactly too sure about," Nina joked. Seth was a nice young man. The nicest she'd ever met. But his head would probably get too big if she kept giving him compliments.
She sighed and snapped her fingers, "Oh darn. And I was so looking forward to doing chores in a dress. I was just thinking to myself 'Nina, this dress is far too white and clean'!" She spread her arms out in front of her, "and here I am! But like you said, exact wrong time."
"Maybe there's something else I can help you with though, my dad's not going to be home tonight so I'm pretty much by myself," Nina's shoulder's slumped. She tried to laugh, but even that felt forced, "maybe a should throw a party." She was 100% joking, of course. She had no friends to even throw a party for. Aside from the twins. And maybe Quinn.

Seth grinned at her, but didn’t really find it all that funny. Sometimes Nina was a bit awkward, but he thought it was endearing. He found that she was like that with everyone. After she mentioned him visiting the snake, he genuinely laughed. “Or maybe we can split custody of Silky like divorced parents,” he joked. “Or going over to your place like a dad who only gets supervised visits.” He wasn’t really experienced in that area as his parents were somehow going strong. Everyone he met seemed to have daddy issues, but that wasn’t the way for him. His family was perfectly functional somehow. It seemed rarer than the alternative, and for that Seth felt grateful. His spats with Troy were absolutely nothing like how other people were. “Oh yeah, I’m not a nice young man at all,” he replied, puffing his chest out dramatically. “Very dangerous. Very mysterious. How naïve your father must be.”
Seth found the image of Nina doing chores in her white dress hilarious. “Maybe next time I’ll have to summon you at the proper time. You seem more in shape than Troy, and probably look better in a dress than he does.” He shivered at the image of his identical twin in a dress. For some reason, to him, he forgot that they looked exactly the same and even got their hair cut in the same way.
“A party?” his eyebrows rose at the suggestion. “Why Nina, are we getting…” he paused. “Social now?” he let out a big gasp and covered his mouth with his hand. “Let’s do it for real,” Seth said, not realizing how his phrase could sound dirty.

Nina feigned a scowl, shaking her head. "Why do we have to be divorced?" she asked, "maybe you're just away for work for days at a time, like my dad when he has to go back to District 2 or The Capitol. Besides, if we were divorced, Silky might have to start seeing a psychiatrist. And supervised visits probably wouldn't be any fun, you wouldn't get to be yourself because you'd have to always act like you're perfect."
Seth always had a way of making her laugh without even trying. That was one of the things she liked most about him. When she was alone or just at home, she rarely laughed. Things in her life were more quiet than anything, silence filled most of her days. But when she was with Seth, his voice filled up her world and her laughter filled her inside. It was like seeing day light for the first time, when she was with Seth. That's she felt at this moment. "Oh yes, very dangerous. The crops in the fields and mess in the barn better watch out," she poked him on his puffed out chest, laughing.
"What do you mean probably?" Nina pushed him lightly on the shoulder. She bit her lip and pretended to think, "well, I suppose he does have some really nice legs. He could probably pull it off. But there's really only one way to find out, we'll have to see what he looks like in a dress," Nina stared at Seth. They were identical twins, as far as she was concerned every physical trait was exactly the same.
"Social?" she said matching his gasp, "that's preposterous. I'd never do such a common thing." Even if she did throw a party no one would come. Except maybe Seth and Troy and maybe Quinn. So there really was no point in doing something like that. Maybe a dinner, but that was probably too formal and stuffy. It might be too awkward. She flushed at his last words. Let's do it for real. Her eyes cast down, her cheeks burning. "I'd like that," she smiled, but then cleared her throat. "But I think Quinn is already throwing one for her birthday. We wouldn't want to upstage her with our awesome party hosting skills."
Every time Quinn was around, which was most of the time, it always felt like she brought a party with her. She was so outgoing compared to Nina that even when it was the four of them, Nina always felt like a fourth wheel. It sort of defeated the point of having pairs. Nina didn't always live next to them so knew them the least amount of time, but even so, her awkwardness made her an odd person out. But Seth always tried to include her in conversations and things they were doing, perhaps that was why she was so drawn to him, because he was the only person who truly saw her. Nina picked up a small round pebble, its surface smooth and unmarked. She played with it between her fingers as she chewed on her lip, trying to muster up the courage to ask him if he would go with her to the party. Even if it was just a birthday party, people usually 'went' with other people. Like their boyfriend or girlfriend.
Just ask him! Her mind screamed, but nothing came out of her lips. After a moment, she shrugged. "We could just go to hers, she always has fun birthday parties," she said, and then recalled an event that happened in one of her parties. Nina laughed, "Remember that first year I moved in and she had a birthday party. Some wild horse showed up and I thought it was part of the party, so I tried to get on it. I managed to get halfway on it before it took off and I had to hang on to the side, I thought I was going die! But then I saw you standing there and I let go of it and jumped to you and you caught me." She laughed some more, "Maybe catch is a giving you too much credit though." Seth certainly broke her fall, though.

Seth rolled his eyes, jokingly. “I wouldn’t have to act like I was perfect, when I am perfect,” he corrected her with an annoying grin on his lips. He patted some dirt off his knee. “But I guess we can stay married if that means so much to you. But not like Troy and Quinn or else you’d have sole custody due to me blowing my brains out from being too nauseated all the time.”
He loved Quinn. Loved her. Just like he loved his brother. For some reason, this made their level of adoration for each other more sickening. It wasn’t that he begrudged their relationship, but they tended to flaunt it about as if everyone wanted to be just like them, like they were a goal to attain. Sometimes he wondered if they tried too hard to seem perfect. He liked to imagine that they had full blown fights when no one, not even him, was around. It gave him hope.
Seth had a hard time seeing Nina when she was shy because she seemed to be anything but with him. She wasn’t always overly talkative but she was just… Nina. She didn’t bug him, but nor did he have to force conversation from her. Things just flowed between them naturally. Seth managed to have that with most people he knew, though, so the fact that it wasn’t easy for her with everyone else perplexed him, but it could have just been because it’s his personality type.
“You act as if I haven’t seen him in a dress. What do you think he does after school and chores? Finds mom’s clothes and right into a dress he goes. I’m really quite shocked that no one else has seen this, though. I’m getting the impression even Quinn doesn’t know, but I don’t think it would be very nice to ruin the surprise when they don’t live together yet,” Seth replied. “If you want to see, though, I’ll just have to have you over when he doesn’t expect it.” He doubted she would take him up on it, not that would believe him anyway. The only other way to get her to believe the story if she did was to dress up in a dress and act as Troy, which wasn’t difficult – all he’d have to talk about was his love of his beautiful and perfect girlfriend.
“Hmm, you are right. Better not embarrass them like that,” he said as if the idea of that was possible. “I would hate to ruin the illusion that people other than us actually like them,” he added with a grimace. This was a convenient situation because then he wouldn’t have to do all the work or risk Quinn being uncomfortable. “I guess the two of us would just have to go together to hers,” he stated with a shrug. “Who knows, maybe we will finally find Mr. Right for you, huh?”
A breeze went by and Seth could smell himself properly. “Ugh, I can’t stay like this. Did you want to come inside and wait as I go take a shower?”
Before he even waited for her to answer, he jumped up and went inside, leaving the door open. He flung off his shoes, grabbed some clothes from his room, and then went to the shower. He put it on as high of heat as he could handle and stepped in. There was something comforting about watching the water at the bottom go from clear to almost black with dirt and then clear again. It was also amusing to him to see how dirty his body could go to how clean it could go in such a short period of time.
He got out of the shower, dried himself off, then ran a hand across the fogged up mirror to see his face. He ran his fingers through his hair to the one side to create the care-free look, which technically was completely care-free.
