Ashley tried to make it a habit to fish away from the docks when he went and he wasn’t on his boat. Fishing was not his profession, so he didn’t have the obligation to bring anything in. There was a thrill when the line became taut and the fight to bring the fish in, but for the most part, Ash went to relax. Being a Peacekeeper was what he did for money, but it was not what his life revolved around. In fact, most of the time he wondered if being a Peacekeeper was what he should have done. Then again, professional fishing required a lot more than just sitting and being relaxed. It involved large boats, time at sea, it was dangerous. It did cross his mind, his physique showed that he was up for it, but it was an uncontrolled setting. What if he had an episode, where would he go to? He would be stuck on the ocean with nowhere to run.
The sun had begun its descent but had yet to hit the horizon. Ash sat on the edge of a bay that was created from the ocean. He was distant from those who wandered along the beach. Occasionally someone would pass and he would give them a nod of acknowledgment. Other than that, he kept to himself. It felt like the first day off he had in forever. He could use more of them.
Ash picked up a bottle of beer that he had hidden somewhat. He looked around and took a swig. The hops was strong in this particular brand. It took a lot for Ashley to get drunk, and he found that he almost never got to that point. He also drank at a slow pace. He tried to not get drunk, anyway. The alcohol just dragged him down into a deep depression. Ash would start hyper and fun, but then when everyone left, he would be left to himself.
Ash had no intention of leaving his spot for quite some time. Dusk tended to be a great fishing time, although many people seemed to think fishing in the middle of the day was the best time. Then again, maybe they didn’t care. He had caught a few fish and had them in a small cooler next to him. He didn’t believe in catch and release. It was a waste of perfectly good food.
It was then that Ash heard a twig crack. His head turned quickly to where he had heard the noise. He knew that he wasn’t hidden, but the noise woke him from his thoughts.

Mia hated the bureaucracy involved with Peacekeeping. When she’d served as a soldier in the war, her unit had been nothing if not efficient. There were no spare seconds, so everything was streamlined and then streamlined again. Now, with the war over, time was no longer a luxury, meaning that Mia could be sent around to run useless errands for the main headquarters back in the Capitol. Under their orders, she was sent all over the Districts and across the nation. Her latest trip, for example, sent her to District 4.
After the war, Mia was torn about her past. While she fought, she met many different people. Some of them she hated spitefully, and for a handful of others, she’d found respect and friendship. Despite those bonds, Mia at first felt keen to letting them die off. Talking to other old soldiers in her unit reminded her too much of the fighting, which she already relived plenty enough in her dreams. Despite that though, she remained entirely torn.
Mia hadn’t planned to seek out Ashley in 4. She wanted to go in, do her business, and leave as soon as possible. In her free time, though, which was given in excessive amounts for someone who was technically supposed to be working to secure the future of Panem, she found herself slipping into a depression.
It was her first time in District 4, and, in many ways, it reopened old wounds. 4 had been Sav’s dream, so at night as Mia lay in the tent beside her, they would talk for hours about what life there might be like. Seeing all of the things they talked about in person but alone stung more than Mia imagined. She felt lonelier than ever, and that led to somewhat rash decisions.
Ash was easy enough to find - it seemed like everyone in the barracks knew just where he would be. So Mia went there, to the spot on the beach far past the docks, heading towards him as the sun sank in the sky and the Earth cooled for the night. Leaving herself no time to reconsider once she saw him, Saw stepped down onto the beach and toward Ash.
Small twigs in the sand cracked beneath the weight of her feet, causing Ash’s head to whip around. Realizing that she hadn’t planned anything to say, Mia only offered a small smile as she approached. ”Hey,” she said quietly, ”Everyone back at the barracks said you’d be out here.”
She glanced around, taking in the view. It was simultaneously mundane and breathtaking. Above the glimmering, rippling water of dark indigo was a brilliant, fiery sun, painting the evening sky with colors that Mia had never dreamed of seeing in the sky. And, within this stunningly beautiful world, there was a man with his fishing pole, living his life amongst the startling beauty.
It felt strange to find herself in the picture, too. Mia hadn’t really spoken with Ash since the end of the war, so she desperately hoped that her small, meager words would accomplish the unlikely and work to fill the lapse of time and silence that existed between the two.
