It was a pretty steady week for Josie. Even though District 11 was one of the more rowdy districts, most of them must have accepted their defeat. There were so many Peacekeepers in Panem now, maybe almost too many, and any flicker of rebellion would instantly be crushed. That was how it worked. Rebels were nothing but that--rebels. Josie didn't mind putting any cocky citizens back in their place. After what the rebels did to her, there was no turning back. She was anything but sympathetic.
She slept well though. Sometimes the nightmares would come, but other times her dreams would be silent. Josie liked when she could sleep uninterrupted. Those were the nights that she slept like nothing ever happened. The people on the night shift usually handled everything without a stir. She was definitely a day person.
All of a sudden, one of the commanders entered in the room screaming. "Wake up! Fire in the fields! All soldiers attend to fire!" Josie bolted awake, throwing on her Peacekeeper uniform as quickly as possible. A fire had broken out? She had no idea how that was possible. Fires were very uncommon, and even though it was summer, things were usually under a lot of control. About twenty Peacekeepers carried a large hose they needed to hook up to the nozzle.
She burst out the door with the other Peacekeepers, running as fast as they could to the fires in an organized fashion. Citizens were awake and she was on the move with the hose. She could see the fire from a mile away as it blazed in the night sky. "Shit, shit, shit," she whispered to herself. She kept running, finally helping people hook up the nozzle to the water tank. She didn't think there was enough water to put out the fire, but she was going to try.
She started lifting the hose, but no water was coming out. She looked back and saw a large twist in the hose. "Somebody get the twist!" She shouted, knowing that if she dropped the hose, lots of water would be wasted. WORD COUNT: 355 TAG: Mia Irid NOTES: So sorry this isn't very good lol

Mia watched as the flames burned higher and higher, consuming the field of wheat and spreading quickly. The fire was hot on her face, burning her from a distance. The fire was loud and bright, consuming all of her attention, but Mia could still hear shouts and cries echoing from around the field. There was no telling what damage would be done before Peacekeepers showed up to put the fire out.
Although it was only August, an unseasonably rainy spring coaxed some of the crops to harvest early. The workers in 11 were called to the fields even in the night. Many of the food stores across Panem had been depleted with the war and still needed rebuilding, so the work was important. Mia was called once or twice a week to supervise the workers as they worked to harvest the crops. The first week of mostly unsupervised harvest led to more than half of the crops going missing. If specific workers were found to be responsible, they were to be shot in the Town Square as an example. Almost all of the citizens were required to be on the fields for given shifts. Mia was supposed to be watching for theft. Just her presence and the threats made by the Commander in the District stopped most of it, but Mia turned her gaze elsewhere when she saw an apple slip into the pocket of a hungry child or a mother desperately trying to feed the little ones she had at home.
Mia remembered the burn of a completely empty stomach too well to punish someone from evading starvation. She would have taken shifts in the field more often if she could, but she didn’t want to raise any suspicion. So instead, she came out for her two nights a week, watching the work lit by lanterns.
Just a few moments ago, a boy no older than eight accidentally kicked a glass lantern as he carried a stack of crops to the nearest collection bin. The dry crops lit up almost immediately. The other Peacekeepers summoned the others and went for backup while Mia was tasked to stay.
Mia immediately started clearing the field of workers, getting them out as fast as she could. All the dry stocks were fodder for burning. The field would light up and burn quickly. “Back home!” Mia shouted as loudly as she could, “Return to your homes! Stay inside!”
Mia turned to see a squad of Peacekeepers running in with a large water hose. The drought that had hit weeks ago meant that there would be less water. As Mia turned to sprint towards them, someone caught her arm. Mia whipped around, her hand reaching for her holstered gun. She saw her commander gripping her arm. ”Are you f*cking crazy, girl?” he shouted, ”You’re letting the rebels get away!”
The fire roared loudly behind them. ”This wasn’t a rebellion, this was an accident!” Mia insisted, jerking her arm away from him and taking a step backwards. The Commander sneered. ”I know these people. I know what’s in their mind. They want us to starve! They want the Capitol to starve to punish them! You let it happen!”
Mia turned away from him and ran towards the hose. She half expected him to draw his gun and shoot her in the back, but instead he just turned away from the fire and began to walk away.
Mia focused on the situation at hand. She heard Locket’s shout and saw the twist in the water hose. She immediately jumped in, grabbing the hose and pushing it into place with her hands. Water began to flow from the end, touching the edge of the scorched crop fields.
