For the past few weeks, Jax’s days went something like this: after waking up as daylight broke, he made it to the forest around 7. Jax stays there into the afternoon, still working as the sun continued its descent in the sky. It was late July, so the heat and bright sunlight were particularly unforgiving. The loud bells positioned throughout the forest sounded at 4, sounding the end of his shift. Jax returned to his apartment, recorded any new information he’d learned during the day, then took a cool shower. He’d find or otherwise (poorly) make dinner for himself.
On some nights, he’d walk the streets of the District and socialize. He picked up quite a lot of information from these people now since they began to trust him. Jax never expected anything significant from the people he interacted with - he usually reported on petty things. Nothing major like the things he heard in these streets. On the other nights, though, he sought out Evelyn.
The girl was still a mystery to him. They spent time together often. When they drank enough, they’d kiss. Once, he even slept in her bed beside her. Despite this, their relationship was neither romantic or sexual, and Jax was helplessly confused by it. To make matters more complicated, he’d gotten that direct call from his commander.
It was just a rumor, of course, but one of the spies in District 1 caught wind of a certain Elias Jagger. Unfortunately for Evelyn, both her brother and her whole family in general were a point of interest for the Capitol. Jax really hadn’t meant to mix work and play - he didn’t expect the girl in the cafe to be a big piece of the puzzle that was District 7. In the past few weeks, Jax was sent all the information that the Capitol knew about the Jagger family. It was up to him to expand upon it, find out what he could.
Jax tried talking with some of the others in the District, but he couldn’t press on and ask too much. Everything had to seem natural, so he couldn’t interrogate them. He didn’t have a reason to be so interested in the Jagger family, not until it fell right in his lap.
Jax usually didn’t feel too guilty about seeking out this information. After all, snuffing out the rebels made the Districts safer. The Capitol was quickly replenishing its stock of soldiers and weapons. If a District tried to rebel again, now struck down and demoralized, the Capitol could easily level a District - they proved it with 13. Still, this felt wrong, like he was violating some unspoken trust with Evelyn. The guilt existed, but it wasn’t enough to stop him from doing his job.
He showed up outside Evelyn’s cafe at 8, a bag on his back that held a few bottles for the night. They drank enough together for this to seem normal. It was so handy that people tended to share more while drunk. Jax stepped inside, smiling at Evelyn as she did some closing work. ”Any plans for this evening?” he asked, unloading the bag from his shoulders. They never planned these things - it was always stumbling upon each other or seeking each other out in the evenings like this. Jax laughed a little as he unzipped the bag, angling it towards Evelyn so she could see his contents. ”You’ve gotta say no, because I’ve already bought these the store won’t let me return them.”
